AdventureSmith Explorations

ASE_logo_blk_ver.gifBased in Lake Tahoe, California, AdventureSmith Explorations is the global leader in small ship, expeditionary cruise vacations. Company founder Todd Smith pioneered the concept of wilderness cruising - combining the comforts of a small cruise ship with the adventure of sea kayaking and exploring ashore in remote wilderness areas. Founded in 2003, AdventureSmith Explorations carefully matches its guests with the top names in expedition cruising as well as smaller, boutique ships that don't make the radar of most travelers.

Dedicated to small footprint, sustainable travel AdventureSmith Explorations orchestrates connections with the world's most exotic natural environments and vibrant native cultures through small ship cruising. Voyages combine intimate cruising with rewarding and exciting activities such as sea kayaking, hiking, and rafting in places usually not found on more mainstream itineraries. Commitment to Sustainable Travel
The nature of modern travel inherently emits harmful carbon emissions through the burning of fossil fuels. Planes, ships, cars and lodges are all sources of additional carbon in our atmosphere and contribute to global warming. AdventureSmith Explorations has calculated the amount of carbon emitted by their small ship cruise passengers each year. Through the company’s Carbon Free Cruising campaign they have completely neutralized those emissions and hope to educate travelers about how to fight global warming by reducing their own carbon footprint. See https://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com/carbon-free-cruising for more information.

In addition to its ground breaking Carbon Free Cruising initiative, the company's mission is to give back to the individuals, communities and environments touched by AdventureSmith Explorations trips by connecting travelers with a network of grassroots and global nonprofit partners worldwide including the Alaska Natural History Association, Neotropica Foundation, and Galapagos Conservancy. The Last Great Race on Earth! 2011 Dog Sled Competition, Early Alaska Focus of New Tour from AdventureSmith Explorations

TAHOE CITY, CA, DEC 13, 2010 – In the 1920’s sled dogs carried mail and supplies to remote regions of Alaska along a trail now called Iditarod. Guests on an AdventureSmith Explorations’ http://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com/ nine-day program in Alaska this winter can place bets on their favorite huskies and witness the start of the annual Iditarod dog sled race while basking under the magnificence of the Northern Lights. This 1,150-mile wilderness trek from Anchorage to the Bering Sea commemorates an heroic race against death by diphtheria in 1925 when these fabled dogs brought life-saving serum to Nome.

Iditarod and Northern Lights Tour 2011 that begins Feb. 27, 2011 is a guaranteed-to-sparkle (think flashing sky atop frosty world) program engaging guests in dog sledding, cross country skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling, with stops along the way to see the Northern Lights from atop a mountain and review works-in-process at the 25-acre Ice Park where, in March, the World Ice Art Championships are held. Lodging is at several of Alaska’s finest hotels.

From Fairbanks, the arrival and departure city, and a stay at the Fairbanks Princess Riverside Lodge on the banks of the Chena River, the tour travels to Chena Hot Springs Resort to play in this winter world.  Here is some the best Northern Lights viewing, especially from the vantage while soaking in a natural outdoor lake of up to 105 degrees. (The resort is also one of the leaders in harnessing geo-thermal energy from the hot springs.)

A flight to Anchorage includes lodging at the Captain Cook Hotel and an invitation to attend the Musher’s Banquet that celebrates the great achievement of the serum run that saved the lives of countless Nome children. The life and work of mushers who drive the teams will be explored, along with insights into the characteristics of sled dogs and the years of breeding and training that go into putting together a team. Mushers will describe the strategy, hardships, technical aspects and joys of life on the trail. At the banquet guests can bid at an auction for a ride with a musher as they leave the race start chute.

The ceremonial Iditarod start begins in downtown Anchorage. The #1 position is reserved in the memory of Leonhard Seppala, an immigrant from Norway who came to Alaska for the Gold Rush and became the state’s foremost hero when he did the 1925 sled run. Any of AdventureSmith Explorations’ guests who are successful bidders on the "Idita-Rider" auction will ride in the sled of a musher as they begin the race.

The per person rate begins at $2,699 (plus $98 tax) for eight nights lodging and breakfasts, two dinners, escort, private transfers, air between Anchorage and Fairbanks plus all admissions to events and lectures.

From November 1, 2010 to April 30, 2011 AdventureSmith Explorations also offers a shorter version of their Northern Lights Tour with an optional seat on the spectacular Aurora Train between Anchorage and Fairbanks. The program departs daily upon request and rates begin at $450 per person (without the train extension), or $750 with the train ride.

Small Yacht Adventure Cruising – AdventureSmith Explorations Announces a Better Way to Experience Hawaii

Book an Eight Day Winter Cruise by November 30 and Save $500 Per Person

Tahoe City, California, November 18, 2010– On a small ship cruising adventure through the Hawaiian Islands the next port of call might be a deserted beach or secluded rain forest trailhead. Active expedition cruise company AdventureSmith Explorations http://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com/ thinks this may be the optimum way to experience the essence of Hawaii.

New for 2011, AdventureSmith Explorations is introducing two flexible itineraries cruising the Hawaiian Islands aboard the 36 passenger Safari Explorer. The eight day Hawaiian Seascapes cruise offers five islands exploring pristine areas of Hawaii that can only be accessed by sea. The eleven day Hawaii's Traditional Shores itinerary delves deeper into island culture and the unique marine wildlife found in island waters.

“I have never been more excited for the launch of a new small ship cruise program. Many small ship cruise companies have entertained the idea of a Hawaiian cruise in the past but none have had the precise combination of the perfect ship and the right vision to be successful,” shares AdventureSmith owner and founder Todd Smith.

What distinguishes this cruise opportunity from others, explains Smith, has to do with the focus on the undeveloped, naturally pristine pockets of paradise still found in the islands. The 145-foot Safari Explorer is nimble enough to set anchor each night in a different secluded harbor or inlet, making it possible to explore remote coves and shoreline by foot, kayak, paddle board, sailboat, mountain bike and motor launch.

The luxury small ship carries up to 36 passengers in 18 well appointed cabins. Featured amenities include an on deck hot tub, a view sauna, complementary massages, exercise equipment, a well stocked book and video library, a full beam swim step for ease in boarding kayaks and inflatable shore boat, mountain bikes and a fully stocked bar with premium wine, beer and spirits.  All staterooms feature heated tile floors in the bathroom, Tempur-Pedic® memory foam mattresses, Flat-screen TV/DVD, and an iPod docking station.  All staterooms have view windows (no portholes). See: http://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com/accommprofile.php/d/hawaii/accid/296

“In our opinion, this is the optimum way to see Hawaii,” states Smith. “Our passengers will actively experience the islands from a much more intimate perspective than they would find at a high-end resort.”

And Smith points out that being ship-based doesn’t mean that you’ll have to pass up your golf game. While visiting Lanai on either cruiseitineraryguests have the optional opportunity to play either The Challenge at Manele Bay or The Experience at Koele, two legendary championship courses.

The eight day Hawaiian Seascapescruise visits the islands of Maui, Molokai, Lanai, Molokini and the Big Island of Hawaii. Low season rates begin at $4,995 per person, double occupancy.  Departures are scheduled from late October into May with special family dates available. See: http://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com/itinerarydetails.php/advid/200

AdventureSmith’s eleven day Hawaii's Traditional Shores itinerary visits the same islands as the shorter cruise but adds an emphasis on snorkeling or diving, marine mammal observation and visits to cultural and historical sites. Rates begin at $6,495 per person, double occupancy.  Three trip dates are offered departing Oct 26 and Dec 8, 2011 and May 11, 2012. Now – By Land As Well As By Sea AdventureSmith Explorations Develops Land-Based Tours to Enhance Portfolio Brimming with Small Ship Cruises

Tahoe City, California, November 4, 2010 – AdventureSmith Explorations (http://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com/), the active travel company that secures matches between adventure-seeking clients and a treasure trove of small, expedition ships, has a land-based face as well that focuses on distinctive wilderness lodges and boutique hotels that promote proximity to nature and authentic culture.

“While we have been experiencing unprecedented growth in all areas, tours on terra firma are now the fastest growing segment of our overall business,” said Todd Smith, AdventureSmith Explorationsowner and founder.

Many of our land programs began as extensions to our small ship cruises.  However over time they have become so popular they are now stand alone itineraries in unique destinations. Our accommodations and the people who run them are rooted in the region's environment.”

Smith went on to point out that their land tours are designed and operated with the same philosophy as the adventure cruises they offer;  small group travel, with exceptional naturalist guides designed to access and explore regions that are off the radar of most travelers and away from tourist crowds.

“We are a company founded by guides and believe that a professional, knowledgeable and personable guide is the key to a successful adventure travel experience be it land-based or small ship cruising,” explained Smith.

For the coming year, AdventureSmith Explorations will be offering 41 distinctive land-based tours. Following are the two newest and most ambitious land programs for 2011:

Baja Intimate Insider
“Insider” is the operative word because the whole focus of this trip which combines the excitement of Cabo with authentic Old Mexico in Todos Santos is to engage with the local people. Guests mingle on a working rancho with the caballeros, potters and owners who live and work much as they have for the past 200 years.  Exclusive visits to art galleries and meetings with the artists unveil the hip and modern side of Todos Santos. Guests are welcome in the kitchen to mingle and learn with the executive chef at a historic hotel where later the staff invites one and all to party into the wee hours.

This tour offers an optional opportunity to volunteer as a language mentor with the Bridge-to-English program in Todos Santos. This is an after-school program for local kids run by a Mexican non-profit. Travelers may volunteer for just a few hours or for several days if they wish.  7 Days from $1,995 per person, double occupancy. Daily year-round departures upon request.

Salkantay Equestrian Adventure
AdventureSmith Explorations is the exclusive North American representative for the equestrian version of a legendary trek over the Salkantay Pass in Peru. Experienced riders will appreciate this lodge to lodge ride ending in the ancient fortress city of Machu Picchu.  Five unique mountain lodges are utilized during this high altitude adventure.
7 Days from $2,950 per person, double occupancy. Departures from April to November.

Other popular land-based trip destinations also include Alaska, Belize, Costa Rica, Ecuador Amazon, Galapagos and Panama.

AdventureSmith Explorations Helps Guide Return of Small Ship Adventure Cruising to Alaska’s Inside Passage

Two Newly Refurbished Ships and Never Before Offered Activities
All Set for the 2011 Season Where the Concept of Active Cruising Began

Tahoe City, CA, Sept. 1, 2010 – AdventureSmith Explorations, www.adventuresmithexplorations.com/ the active travel company that secures matches between adventure-seeking clients and a treasure trove of small, expedition ships returns to the Alaskan wilderness in the summer of 2011 with two newly renovated ships and a variety of unprecedented off-ship activities.

The redesigned vessels now in place for next summer are the same pioneering small ships that AdventureSmith Explorations founder and president, Todd Smith, helped design and direct during their first deployment to Alaska in the 1990s. They were the first cruises of their kind to offer enough kayaks and gear to accommodate every passenger during off-vessel wilderness activities which evolved to become the primary focus of today’s adventure cruise.

“When these ships (the M/V Wilderness Adventurer and M/V Wilderness Discoverer) were pulled in 2005 there was a void in adventure cruising in this region,” said Smith. “It’s beyond exciting for me to be involved in their re-launch with InnerSea Discoveries and to help design and expand off-ship programs to include never-before offered activities.”

For the first time, guests will be able to pick and choose from traditional included activities such as in-depth wilderness explorations by zodiac, kayak or naturalist guided walks, to new, ground-breaking optional activities such as overnight wilderness kayaking, hiking and camping, expert fishing charters from the ship (local guides/boats rendezvous with the vessel to take clients fishing for the day) and flight-seeing. There will be some new activities included in the programming as well such as paddle boarding, caving and snorkeling.

The new program has several advantages over the original adventure cruises. The ships which used to carry up to 88 passengers will operate with a maximum of only 49 passengers. This will provide more space on board and allow for more time to engage in off-vessel activities. The ships are now being completely refurbished with new amenities such as an on board sauna and hot tub with a view, exercise equipment, on-deck yoga classes, massage services (additional charge) and TVs with DVD players. Guests with flip and video cameras are encouraged to film daily activities, later to be shared via video monitors in the main salon or streamed into cabin TVs during social hour before dinner or afterwards.

Also included in the re-fit will be bow-mounted underwater cameras to pipe in images from below the waves into the main salon’s flat screen TVs and into cabins via designated channels.

Two 7-night/8-day itineraries planned for the 2011 season will actively explore the Eastern and Western Coves of southeast Alaska’s Inside Passage. The independent itineraries can be combined for a longer cruise. Singly or together they provide a comprehensive overview of this state’s primal wilderness that can only be accessed by small vessels. This means that discerning guests will be far removed from large cruise ship crowds.

Smith has been intimately involved in the relaunch, consulting with InnerSea Discoveries (owner of vessels) on the cruise itineraries and on-board and off-ship adventure programs that take the original concept of active cruising to the next level.

The upcoming programs start at $1,795 per person for a 7-night/8-day cruise. There are also three dedicated family departures on June 25, July 23 and Aug. 13. Families with children 12 and under save 25 percent on all departures and 30 percent on these dedicated family trips.

Small Ship Expedition Cruise to Spotlight Splendor of Baja Gray Whale Migration in March

Santa Barbara Travel Bureau and AdventureSmith Explorations
Team Up To Host Aug. 2nd Event
To Raise Whaling Awareness and Showcase Fund Raising Cruise
On Behalf of Origami Whales Project

Santa Barbara, CA, July 20, 2010 -- An AdventureSmith Explorations cruise on Baja’s Sea of Cortez March 19-26, 2011, will showcase the splendor and drama of migrating gray whales that are still prized as bounty even though commercial whaling was banned in 1986 by the International Whaling Commission. The sheer number of gray whales present makes Baja the site of one of the largest migrations of any mammal, many covering over 10,000 miles each year.

The trip, Baja: Among the Great Whales, is sponsored by the Santa Barbara Travel Bureau http://www.sbtravel.com/specials.html on behalf of the Origami Whales Project http://www.peggy-oki.com/cu_origami.html headquartered in Carpinteria, CA that since 2004 has worked to raise awareness of threats to dolphins and whales through its large-scale public art project, “Curtain of 34,000 Origami Whales.” This visual statement memorializes whales in the thousands slaughtered by Japan, Norway, and Iceland after the 1986 global ban.

The director of the Origami Whales Project, Peggy Oki, will be joining the cruise. A portion of the cruise proceeds will assist this project. As an incentive, guests booking by Aug. 15 receive a $250 per person early booking discount off of per person rates from $4,990, double occupancy.

The Santa Barbara Travel Bureau welcomes the public to a special evening co-hosted by Peggy Oki and Todd Smith, founder of AdventureSmith Explorations (http://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com/). Smith will give a trip briefing and Oki will help raise awareness of the threat facing whales worldwide. The event will begin at 6 p.m. Aug. 2 at the Santa Barbara Travel Bureau office at 1028 State Street in Santa Barbara (Phone: 805. 966.3116).

“As a naturalist and guide in Baja for many years I know that seeing whales up close in their natural habitat can be a life changing experience,” said Smith. “The fundraising Baja Among the Great Whales cruise will offer travelers a wonderfully rare chance to have an intimate encounter with a Gray Whale.”

Smith noted the National Geographic Sea Bird has been chosen for their active small ship exploration of the Sea of Cortez, one of the richest marine feeding grounds in the world. The vessel accommodates 62 guests in 31 outside cabins. A fleet of Zodiacs and kayaks allows intimate encounters with the whales and other marine life.
