About

Just Ahead guides contain more points of interest and stories than any other audio travel guides. Just Ahead’s audio guides are professionally written and narrated—not filled with fragmented, crowdsourced opinions and inaccuracies—and they give travelers and their families an entertaining and educational travel experience.

Just Ahead does not require cell phone coverage or an Internet connection. Instead, it utilizes GPS to know exactly where drivers are on the road, and delivers stories and maps relevant to their location. Just Ahead also helps drivers avoid getting lost by providing helpful suggested directions. Just Ahead tells drivers why they should turn or not, what they should do after a turn, and recommends the best direction to take if there are multiple route options.

Why Just Ahead?

Just Ahead helps families make memories that will last a lifetime. With Just Ahead, drivers get a relaxing and safe experience, and parents can engage with their children as newfound information transforms everyone into knowledgeable explorers.

Unlike printed travel guides—which cost more, become outdated, take time to read, and distract drivers—Just Ahead’s audio guides are inexpensive, frequently updated, and let travelers focus on the sights and scenery outside their vehicle.

Just Ahead Announces Release of Latest Smartphone Audio Guide Covering Arizona’s Petrified Forest National Park

LONG BEACH, CA, Feb. 9, 2016– Just Ahead (http://www.justahead.com/), synonymous with award-winning smartphone apps for road tripping through National Parks and recently voted a top five New Travel App by USA Today readers, announces its15th national park release, Petrified Forest National Park.

This is Just Ahead’s first release in 2016, its second year of producing distinctive GPS-guided smartphone audio tours of this country’s most dramatic landscapes and roadways.

Just Ahead’s road tour of the frozen-in-time wonders that comprise Petrified Forest National Park is a richly narrated guide to this often-overlooked park. The park is a showcase of astounding geological beauty and one of the world’s greatest concentrations of petrified wood. Just Ahead’s narrated tour explains how trees become petrified and where to see the most stunning examples of petrified wood. It also guides visitors to such archeological treasures as Agate House, a building nearly 1,000 years old made entirely of petrified wood, and odd stone formations that look like giant teepees.

Geology comes to life in the Painted Desert and the stunning rock layers on display in the park. Prehistory comes to life, too, as visitors learn about the world-class trove of fossils in the park. To wit: 20-foot-long land alligators with oversized heads, and claws like knives!

Because it’s natural to be curious while on a road trip, this app anticipates then answers questions that come up such as: What’s the difference between a butte and a mesa? Why is the Painted Desert so colorful? Who carved the petroglyphs on Newspaper Rock? What happens on the summer solstice at Puerco Pueblo? Where can you legally buy petrified wood? How did the stone teepees get their strange shape?

This tour includes every mile of the main park road and the park’s major side trips, trailheads, and scenic highlights as Rainbow Forest, Crystal Forest, and Jasper Forest; Agate House and Bridge; historic Route 66; and the Painted Desert and Painted Desert Inn, among many others.

Both living and extinct wild creatures are part of the narrated tour. Think pronghorn, coyotes, bobcats, and tarantulas, and imagine such prehistoric charmers as metoposaurs, rauisuchians, aetosaurs, and coelophysis. Nature gets her due as the app considers fossils, especially of fallen trees that lived in the Late Triassic period of the Mesozoicera, about 225 million years ago. All of this is vividly brought to life by an award-winning writer and Just Ahead’s compelling narration.

Travelers also learn how to access the best backcountry hikes and where to dine and rest up.  Because the park is located in Navajo and Apachecounties in northeastern Arizona, lore of these tribes also adds to the mix. The most significant of more than 600 archeological sites, including petroglyphs, are also pointed out.

This tour extends west as far as Flagstaff, and much of the approach traces historic Route 66, visiting, among others, historic trading posts and landmark motels, Walnut Canyon National Monument, San Francisco Volcanic Field, and Jim Gray’s Petrified Wood Shop. This tour release is a perfect companion to Just Ahead’s Grand Canyon tour. Where that tour leaves off in Flagstaff, this tour begins, following the course of historic Route 66 and stopping in at great roadside attractions such as Wigwam Village Motel, Jack Rabbit Trading Post, and Meteor Crater. Rocky Mountain National Park Joins Just Ahead Family of Smartphone Audio Guides

LONG BEACH, CA, Nov. 12, 2015– Just Ahead (http://www.justahead.com/), synonymous with award-winning smartphone apps for road tripping through national parks, now offers its GPS-guided smartphone audio tour of Rocky Mountain National Park—a narrated guide to the most dramatic and unspoiled mountain landscape in the United States. It is Just Ahead’s first guide in Colorado.

The audio tour of this park -- 265,600 acres of mountain splendor and dramatic roads --includes all of the park’s major paved routes and east and west approaches. The act of driving triggers this GPS-guided tour narration. After download from the Apple App Store or Google Play, this app requires no Internet connection or mobile-phone signal. Just turn it on, drive, and enjoy.

Author Mel White, highly respected author of National Geographic’s Complete National Parks of the United States, tells stories ofthe park’s scenic highlights, including Bear Lake, Wild Basin, the Continental Divide, the Kawaneechee Valley, and Trail Ridge Road, the highest continuously paved road in the United States (Trail Ridge is closed during the snowy months of the year, but most other roads in the park remain open). The app reveals transitions from the montane ecosystem to subalpine terrain to dramatic alpine tundra above tree line. It calls out trailheads for some of the greatest mountain hikes in the country: hikes to the Twin Sisters Peaks, the great hikes that emanate from Bear Lake, and the trail to Chasm Lake at the base of the sheer north face of Longs Peak, the park’s highest mountain at 14,259 feet.

Between jaw-dropping sights are interspersed stories about the park’s wildlife -- elk, bighorn sheep, moose, black bear, coyote, mule deer, mountain lion, yellow-bellied marmot -- and the best places for spotting them. The park’s history, geology and geography -- think Continental Divide -- neighboring towns, and cool places to camp and stay are folded into the narrative, along with pointers on best hikes, trout fishing, birding, and photo opps.

As visitors climb through ponderosa pine forests to the montane ecosystem to subalpine terrain and finally up to dramatic alpine tundra above tree line Just Ahead shares stories of the American Indians, early settlers, the Civilian Conservation Corps and the park’s famous aspen groves. Just Ahead Road-Trips From LA to Vegas and Beyond In New I-15 Audio Tour Guide

Detailed GPS-Prompted Narration Reveals Stories and Facts Behind Iconic Sights, Hidden Curiosities, and Natural Wonders

LONG BEACH, CA, Sept. 22, 2015– Just Ahead (http://www.justahead.com/), the award-winning smartphone app synonymous with road tripping through national parks, has just added one of the country’s most popular open-road drives to its audio-tour map.

Just Ahead’s new Interstate 15 audio guide amuses driver and passengers with anecdotes of gunslingers, crazy characters and history along 400 well-traveled miles of Interstate 15 from Los Angeles to St. George, UT, by way of Las Vegas and Hoover Dam. Time to detour? The new I-15 tour guide segues into other Just Ahead audio tours for Zion National Park and Death Valley National Park.

Many travelers know I-15 simply as the way to Vegas. But imagine listening en route to yarns of Spanish history, learning about bizarre geographical highlights—including cinder cones and the San Andreas Fault—and about plant life and wildlife, from Joshua trees to creosote to rattlesnakes. And not to be missed are tales of Las Vegas’s quirky history. Although Nevada was the first western state to ban gambling, Bugsy Siegel changed the game, bringing flair, style and organized crime to Las Vegas, where not so many years ago the city thrilled to the sight of mushroom clouds rising from the nearby desert floor in the early days of atomic bomb testing.

This tour guides listeners over fabled Cajon Pass and across the high Mohave Desert, including a side trip to Hoover Dam. The dam, completed in 1935, was one of history’s greatest engineering accomplishments. But what about those rumors of workers buried inside the concrete abutments? Just Ahead spells out the real story. The app also makes memorable Lake Mead, a recreation hub, and the Mojave National Preserve, Red Rock Canyon, Valley of Fire, and the Virgin River Gorge.

For more information please see:http://www.justahead.com/tours/los-angeles-to-las-vegas

As with all Just Ahead smartphone guides, the Interstate 15 audio tour works without an Internet connection or cell phone service. Drivers or passengers simply download it, turn it on, and enjoy a richly narrated tour keyed to your present location.

Just Ahead’s location-aware technology utilizes GPS to know precisely where drivers are on the road, and delivers stories and maps relevant to their exact location. The groundbreaking app points out not-to-miss features while also helping drivers avoid getting lost, by providing suggested directions and telling drivers why they should turn or not, what they should do after a turn, and the best direction to take if there are multiple route options.

A recent user of the guide had this to say about the I-15 audio tour: “Once the narrator started talking about all of the amazing historic sites, natural highlights, and man-made oddities, we were hooked. We listened, and his information sparked amazing family conversations about the geography we were seeing, the people who used to traverse this same trail thousands of years ago, and the power of water.”

Just Ahead guides are currently available for the following National Parks: Yosemite, Grand Canyon, Joshua Tree, Death Valley, Sequoia & Kings Canyon, Zion & Cedar Breaks, Bryce Canyon, Capitol Reef, Canyonlands & Arches, Yellowstone, and Grand Teton. Many additional park guides are in production.

The Just Ahead app is a free download available either through the Apple App Store (iPhone) or Google Play (Android), and each destination guide is available as an in-app purchase. Guides range from $7.99 to $9.99 and include a free trial and free guide updates.

Just Ahead Announces Release of Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Park Audio Tour Guides

Detailed GPS-Prompted Narration Reveals Stories and Facts Behind Iconic Sights, Hidden Gems and Natural Wonders

LONG BEACH, CA, Aug. 10, 2015– Just Ahead (http://www.justahead.com/), creator of the award-winning smartphone app for road tripping through national parks and scenic highways, has just released in time for late summer and autumn travel its GPS-prompted audio tour guides for narrated drives through Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks. These separate guides together provide a seamless two-park adventure with the magic of a virtual park ranger along for the ride.

With more than 300 miles of scenic roads that carve a giant figure eight through mountains, meadows and thermal marvels, Yellowstone National Park is the ideal setting for a Just Ahead tour. This is Just Ahead’s most extensive guide to date, with more than 600 narrated stories of the region. Think Old Faithful, Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, Artist Paint Pots, Norris Geyser Basin and Yellowstone Lake, to name a few. This audio guide explains the planet’s greatest concentration of thermal features—fumaroles, geysers, paint and mud pots, the Yellowstone caldera, and travertine mounds —and explores natural history and man-made lore.

Users driving through Yellowstone will enjoy timely tips on the best places to see bison, elk, grizzly bears, moose, wolves, pronghorn, beaver, trumpeter swans and raptors. Also included are little-known waterfalls, suggestions for scenic side trips, fly-fishing streams, thermally heated swimming holes, the best places for RV and tent camping; and the park’s fabled lodges: Lake Hotel, Old Faithful Lodge and Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel. See: http://www.justahead.com/tours/yellowstone-national-park/

The jagged Teton Range, crowned by Grand Teton itself, soars 13,770 feet high, rising above pristine mountain lakes and a vast river valley below.  Grand Teton National Park has 152 miles of paved roads that deliver views of the majestic Tetons, follow the course of the winding Snake River and bisect the sagebrush-dotted valley known as Jackson Hole.

During the audio tour road trippers will learn about the man who skied down Grand Teton Mountain, about the derring-do of the park’s early mountaineers and the story behind one of the most famous and successful horse rustlers of all time. It also calls out the best places for overnighting -- under a roof or canvas. Park accommodations -- Jackson Lake Lodge, Signal Mountain Lodge, Jenny Lake Lodge, Colter Bay Cabins and Climbers’ Ranch -- are covered in detail. Shutterbugs will appreciate learning about the best vantage points for nature and wildlife photography.

Grand Teton’s not-to-miss sights include Jackson Lake, Willow Flats, Snake and Gros Ventre Rivers, Signal Mountain, Jackson Hole, Timbered Island, Teton Glacier, National Elk Refuge, Blacktail Butte and views of the Cathedral Group and Grand Teton. The lore of a succession of American Indians, cattle ranchers, beaver trappers, horse thieves and early mountaineers brings this country to life. The guide is full of suggestions for the best places for day hiking, river rafting and fishing. See: http://www.justahead.com/tours/grand-teton-national-park/

As with all Just Ahead guides, the Yellowstone and Grand Teton tours work without an Internet connection or cell phone service. Drivers or passengers simply download it, turn it on and enjoy a richly narrated tour.

Just Ahead utilizes GPS technology to know exactly where drivers are on the road, and delivers stories and maps relevant to their exact location. The groundbreaking app points out not-to-miss features while also helping drivers avoid getting lost by providing suggested directions and telling drivers why they should turn or not, what they should do after a turn and the best direction to take if there are multiple route options.

Driving Among Utah’s 'Mighty Five' National Parks Enhanced by Just Ahead's New Mobile App and Audio Tour Guides

Just-Released Arches & Canyonlands and Capitol Reef National Park Travel Guides Combine with Bryce and Zion to Complete Utah’s Legendary Quintet

LONG BEACH, CA, June 1, 2015– Just Ahead, creator of the award-winning smartphone app for road tripping through national parks, announces Utah’s “Mighty Five” are now covered with GPS-prompted audio tour guides that make vacationers feel like they have a park ranger along for the ride. The Mighty Five parks join Just Ahead’s growing portfolio of audio guides for US national parks.

“No other state in the nation boasts a more spectacular or concentrated collection of national park treasures than Utah. Dubbed the ‘Mighty Five,’ each has a wealth of tales and facts to tell, and Just Ahead’s app for mobile phones delivers the narrated story,” said Just Ahead founder Gregory Morse.

With four audio guides that can be purchased within the mobile app, Just Ahead covers all five of Utah’s national parks, among many other western national parks. Just Ahead’s Mighty Five guides provide an in-depth dive into some of the most spectacular driving experiences in America—the roads that lead to and through the red-rock scenery and dramatic geology of southern Utah. All of these national parks are linked by short drives from one another, so visitors can enjoy a narrated guided tour of all five parks and the roads that link them. A traveler’s smartphone becomes a private tour guide—knowledgeable, engaging, accurate, and entertaining.

Here are some of the things users will learn about the Mighty Five…

  • Zion National Park(including Cedar Breaks National Monument) features four scenic drives; Zion Canyon, Zion–Mt. Carmel Highway, Kolob Terrace Road, and Kolob Canyons Road, accessing such landmarks as the Court of the Patriarchs, the Grotto, Weeping Rock, Angels Landing, Great White Throne, Temple of Sinawava, Zion Narrows, Checkerboard Mesa, the Subway, and Lava Point.
  • Bryce Canyon National Parkis a fantasyland of eroded stone where vast “cities” of red-pink-orange limestone pinnacles pop into view around every bend. Stories here talk about pinnacles, hoodoos, mazes, Thor’s Hammer, grottoes, and domes, along with American Indian history, early pioneers, California condors, and bristlecone pines (the world’s oldest living organisms).
  • Arches and Canyonlands National Parksare combined in one guide. Arches boasts a maze of 2,000 natural sandstone arches, including Delicate Arch—the formation that graces every Utah license plate. A trip through Arches features such natural wonders as Park Avenue, Courthouse Towers, Petrified Dunes, Balanced Rock, The Windows, and the Fiery Furnace. Canyonlands National Park is best known for its vast spaces highlighted by the Needles and Island in the Sky and defined by dramatic views of the Colorado and Green Rivers. There are stunning petroglyphs to discover, a historic cowboy camp, a 700-year-old stone granary, and a giant arch that looks like a wooden shoe.
  • Capitol Reef National Park, remote in location and feel, offers sweeping vistas of geological features such as the Waterpocket Fold—a giant wrinkle in the earth’s crust. Stories cover such wonders as Capitol Dome, Golden Throne, Capitol Gorge, Pioneer Register (140 years of rock-carved names), and Natural Bridges. Just Ahead guides visitors to all of the major sights in the park, and those along Utah Scenic Byway 12—truly one of the country’s most stunning drives, linking Bryce Canyon and Capitol Reef National Parks.

Equipped with a Just Ahead guide, listeners will hear behind-the-scenery stories of the geological forces that carved the landscape, as well as narratives about the wildlife, American Indian and pioneer histories, and the lore behind Hollywood movies shot in these wild landscapes.

As with all Just Ahead guides, they work without an Internet connection or cell phone service. Drivers or passengers simply download it, turn it on, and enjoy a richly narrated tour.

Just Ahead utilizes GPS technology to know exactly where drivers are on the road, and delivers stories and maps relevant to their exact location. The groundbreaking app points out not-to-miss features while also helping drivers avoid getting lost by providing suggested directions and telling drivers why they should turn or not, what they should do after a turn, and the best direction to take if there are multiple route options.

Just Ahead guides are currently available for the following National Parks: Yosemite, Grand Canyon, Joshua Tree, Death Valley, Sequoia and Kings Canyon, Zion and Cedar Breaks, Bryce Canyon, Capitol Reef, and Canyonlands and Arches. Additional park guides are in production and are expected to roll out in time for the busy summer travel season. They include Yellowstone, Grand Teton, Badlands, Black Hills, Petrified Forest, Canyon de Chelly, Monument Valley, and Mesa Verde.

The Just Ahead app is a free download available either through the Apple App Store (iPhone) or via Google Play (Android), and each destination guide is available as an in-app purchase. Guides range from $4.99 to $9.99 and include a free trial and free guide updates.

America’s World Wonder: Grand Canyon Visitors Now Get Enhanced Experience with Just Ahead’s Mobile App and Audio Tour Guide

LONG BEACH, CA, May 11, 2015– Just in time to take advantage of the May 15 annual re-opening of the Grand Canyon’s North Rim facilities (the South Rim is open year-round), Just Ahead (http://www.justahead.com/) has released its newest audio travel guide app for smartphones that makes road-tripping vacationers feel like they have a national park ranger along for the ride.

Just Ahead’s narrated audio tour guides visitors to and through the park, with narration pointing out not-to-miss features and local history based on their exact location without the need for an Internet or mobile phone connection. The result is a richer, more fulfilling experience of the park than visitors would otherwise have on their own.

The groundbreaking app also provides background stories on history, wildlife, and the park’s dramatic geology. Drivers and passengers hear stories about the area’s earliest inhabitants, the Ancient Puebloans…the one-armed Civil War Major who literally put the Grand Canyon on the map…and about the forces of nature that created the breathtaking chasm.

Just Ahead utilizes GPS technology to pinpoint where drivers are on the road, and delivers stories and maps relevant to their location. Just Ahead also helps drivers avoid getting lost by providing helpful suggested directions. Just Ahead tells drivers why they should turn or not, what they should do after a turn, and the best direction to take if there are multiple route options.

The new Just Ahead Grand Canyon National Park tour guide entertains while educating and encourages exploration of hundreds of sites found along the South Rim and the North Rim. The guide even covers the 220-mile drive between the two rims, plus all of the major approaches to the park. The narrative was written by Alan Rider, an author for, among others, National Geographic and AAA. The National Park Service also provided helpful input for the guide.

Tumbling throughout the app narrative are recommendations on the best scenic approaches, historic landmarks and geology; locations of historic trading posts; stories of American Indians, early miners and pioneers; and the lore of Old Route 66. The app also provides insider tips on day hikes, side trips, and the park’s historic lodges; information on where to stay, camp and hike; and the canyon’s best photo opportunities for sunrise and sunset.

“We seek to make the world a better place by educating and entertaining visitors to the most beautiful and amazing places the world has to offer,” said Just Ahead founder Gregory Morse. “We believe that people who are informed are more likely to value, preserve, and support these special places.”

As of spring 2015, Just Ahead guides are available for the following parks and monuments: Yosemite, Grand Canyon, Zion and Cedar Breaks, Bryce Canyon, Joshua Tree, Death Valley, and Sequoia and Kings Canyon. Additional park guides are in production and are expected to roll out in time for the busy summer travel season. They include Yellowstone, Grand Teton, Capitol Reef, Arches, Canyonlands, Petrified Forest, Canyon De Chelly, Monument Valley, and Mesa Verde.

Imagine touring Sequoia and Kings Canyon and other National Parks through the eyes and curiosity of award-winning travel journalist Bob Howells—three-time winner of the Society of American Travel Writers (SATW) Lowell Thomas Award for travel writing andco-author of National Geographic’s Secrets of the National Parks.

Fittingly, one of Howells’s Sequoia and Kings Canyon stories concerns John Muir and the Birth of the Parks. Other narratives reveal stories about the world’s largest trees and encounters with bears and bighorn sheep that can be part of the passing landscape.

“National Park Week is a special week for us as we seek to make the world a better place by educating and entertaining visitors to America’s best idea—our beloved national parks,” said Just Ahead founder Gregory Morse. “We believe that people who are informed are more likely to value, preserve, and support these special places.”

Jesse Forest, a satisfied Just Ahead user, had this to say about his recent experience: "Holy cow. Just got back from Death Valley and I can't believe how great the app was along the journey. Not only did it guide us to hikes and places we might have easily overlooked, but gave us perspective of the park that allowed us to appreciate it on a whole new level (history, points of interest, flora/fauna, etc.). As an annual parks pass holder, I look forward to using it on our next adventure.”

The Just Ahead app is a free download available through the Apple App Store, and each destination guide is available as an in-app purchase. Guides range from $4.99 – $9.99 and include a free trial and free guide updates. An Android version will be available this May.
