As the Perfect Introduction to Canyon Country Moab Adventure Center Suggests Four-Day Land and River Sampler

MOAB, UT, May 29, 2018 – Among this summer’s most comprehensive, short-break vacations is a four-day frolic on land and water in the red rock playground that is Moab, Utah.

Moab Adventure Center ( wanted to create the perfect short escape for the first-time visitor. An active introduction to the region that encompasses Arches and Canyonlands National Parks and the Colorado River that carves a system of canyons between them. The result is the Southwest Sampler which features adventures both on land and on water.

Labeled the “Best of the Southwest” guests are treated to three nights lodging (one night under canvass), an interpretive tour of Arches National Park, an iconic backcountry 4x4 adventure via custom Hummer and an overnight rafting journey down the Colorado River.

The per person, double, rate is $685 for ages 16 and up and $590 for ages 5-15 (minimum age 5). The price includes two nights at the Southwest-themed Gonzo Inn with private balcony, pool and hot tub, all close to downtown Moab; daily breakfasts; one night deluxe camping on the Colorado River under the stars in Castle Valley (named for castle-like rock formations); all meals on the overnight rafting/camping adventure; a four-hour guided hiking and sightseeing tour through Arches National Park followed by a bistro lunch, a sunset Hummer Safari, and a two-day raft trip on the Colorado with all camping and rafting gear and guided support needed.

“Families can be so over-scheduled today that carving out time together can be a challenge.  Our Southwest Sampler fits into what people are looking for: short breaks, a variety of outdoor adventure – but not too strenuous – and pampering,” said Cort Wright, Manager of the Moab Adventure Center.

2018 season sales have been brisk, making this package one of the hottest ticket items for this summer noted Wright. “As of late-May our Southwest Sampler sales were up 40 percent over last year.”

Guests must be prepared, he added, to drop their jaws over and over again on this adventure that introduces them to Arches National Park, a one-of-a-kind, all-natural stunner where over 2,000 natural sandstone arches and towering red rock formations blanket the landscape. Later, guests are strapped into a rugged 4x4 on the Hummer Safari as the off-road vehicle scales one of Moab’s famous red rocks fins on the way to an area known as Hell’s Revenge. A guide explains the geology of slickrock country with guests enjoying hors d’oeuvres and libations as the desert sun paints the evening sky.

The grand finale is a two-day Colorado River rafting adventure that begins on serene waters flanked by crimson cliffs. A barbeque precedes the privilege of falling asleep in a tent to the sounds of the river under a blanket of innumerable stars. The next morning the aroma of coffee and sizzling bacon clutch the anticipation mounting for the moderate whitewater ahead.

“The remoteness of the location, rugged terrain and services of a truly caring staff are a major part of the appeal of this trip,” added Wright.

Because the Colorado River is not controlled by an upstream dam, water levels vary throughout the season. Higher, faster water occurs in the spring (May, June) and begins to slow in July and August. Rapids are classified using the traditional Class I-V rating scale, which factors in not only water levels, but navigational difficulty. Typically, this beautiful river section has Class I-II whitewater.

Guests have the option of letting the guides stay in charge rowing an oar boat, or they can be part of the paddling crew on paddle boats. Inflatable kayaks (duckies) are also provided so guests can take turns paddling on their own.
