Environmental Promise

As a member in good standing of both the Association of Arctic Expedition Cruise Operators (AECO) and the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO), Poseidon Expeditions pledges its commitment to the further development of Arctic and Antarctic conservation and support of related scientific research.

They actively encourage participation in their expeditions by naturalists and scientists engaged in such research, offering a platform from which they can pursue their important work as well as a forum where they can voice their unique understanding of these fragile and remote ecosystems. Preservation of the Arctic and Antarctic habitats and the polar ice cap are environmental imperatives and the responsibility of all, including tourism operators and their guests. Poseidon Expeditions is honored to be a part of this, and to help passengers understand the importance of preserving Polar Regions for future generations.

International Family of Polar Explorers

What sets Poseidon Expeditions apart from many other cruise operations is its ability to attract an international mixture of cruise participants. Guests come from China,Russia, Europe, North America, Australia and elsewhere. While English is the primary language spoken by expedition leaders and staff, Poseidon offers a QuietVox in-ear translation system for non-English-speaking passengers (e.g. German, Russian, Chinese, Japanese, French, and Swedish). Since the Polar Regions truly hold international status belonging to the world community, it is only fitting that travelers should arrive there with fellow expeditioners from all corners of the globe.

Single Travelers

Poseidon Expeditions will arrange same-gender shares for single travelers who can book at the lowest fare in the triples, or in double-occupancy cabins at the regular per person cost. Single occupancy of cabins is also available for a surcharge.

Polar Cruise Expert Poseidon Expeditions Fills Two New Management Positions

PROVIDENCE, RI, April 17, 2019– Poseidon Expeditions, a leading provider of cruise adventures in Antarctica and the Arctic, filled two newly created management positions on April 1. Ms. Anja Erdmann was named the company’s director of expedition operations/human resources, and Ms. Jennifer Kunath became Poseidon’s North American sales director.

Promoted to the new position of director of expedition operations/human resources, Anja Erdmann will assume many of the duties related to staffing Poseidon’s vessels with top-notch expedition staff and guest lecturers, finding and training new talent, as well as team scheduling, and contractual issues. She will also continue in her role as company representative to both AECO (Association of Arctic Expedition Cruise Operators) and IAATO (International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators).

Erdmann came to Poseidon in 2015 from Hurtigruten, where she had served as a project manager and expedition leader since 2006. She has a degree in tourism management from Harz University of Applied Studies and Research in Wernigerode, Germany. She is based near Berlin, Germany.

“Anja has been a super addition to Poseidon, juggling diverse responsibilities and projects, as well as itinerary planning, permit and authorization management, and expedition leading aboard the 114-passenger Sea Spirit,” said Senior Vice President Jan Bryde. “It’s a well-deserved promotion, and I look forward to working closely with Anja on the many challenging polar field issues as the expedition cruise segment continues to gather momentum.”

Jennifer Kunath brings 30 years of experience with adventure travel specialists to Poseidon, working for 20 years as a program manager and director of sales for International Expeditions, Inc. In 2007, she joined Safari Legacy, Inc., a destination management safari outfitter based in Tanzania, opening the US office for the company and wearing many hats as director of sales, marketing account management and business development. She is a graduate of international studies from the University of Montevallo in Alabama, and will be based in Birmingham AL.

“We are pleased to find someone of the caliber of Jennifer, with her extensive background in adventure and expedition-style travel worldwide,” said Steve Wellmeier, managing director of Poseidon Expeditions USA. “From a sales perspective, she understands how the travel industry intersects with wildlife conservation and stewardship of the environment, and that’s the same whether it’s the plains of eastern Africa or the icy terrain of the Arctic and Antarctica.”

YouTube Videos Help Poseidon Expeditions Convey Fragile Beauty of Polar Arctic

PROVIDENCE, RI, March 12, 2019– Poseidon Expeditions is the go-to company for cruising into far-flung worlds of snow and ice. Scientists, scholars and filmmakers are often invited on board to share their knowledge of fragile Arctic regions with guests who, on any given cruise, may represent up to 18 different flags.

“By inviting world-renowned specialists to join our Arctic cruises, we’re accomplishing several purposes,” said Poseidon founder Nikolay Saveliev. “First, passengers have a wonderful opportunity to ask questions and receive first-hand answers based on fact and science. Second, these specialists are often working on their own projects which they are happy to share with guests. Third, their presence and enthusiasm boosts our mission of creating ambassadors for the wildlife and ecosystems of the Arctic regions.”

Poseidon Expeditions is also bringing these renowned specialists to an ever-growing audience through YouTube. The first in an ongoing series called “Polar Moments: Arctic Expedition” are already available on YouTube.

While on a cruise to the North Pole, the first in the video series features Don Perovich, a geophysicist whose specialty is the Arctic sea ice cover. This climate change scientist created the Ice Mass Balance Buoy that measures ice thickness and temperature data over time. The central goal of his research is to understand the interaction of sunlight with sea ice. He uses this data to study the changes in Arctic sea ice cover. As he explains on camera, his work measures the depth, water temperatures and salinity of melt ponds in the ice. Information is assimilated into models to help improve predictions about the future of sea ice.

Perovich is a professor of engineering at Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH and a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union. He has received the Department of the Army Meritorious Civilian Service Award, the National Science Foundation Arctic Service Award, the Coast Guard Arctic Service Medal, and the Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory lifetime achievement award. To view this video see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6SkiO-rndkY

A second video features Huw Lewis-Jones, a gifted polar historian, raconteur and author, who joined a team of naturalist guides on a cruise to the North Pole. He holds a doctoral degree from Cambridge University and has served as Curator at the Scott Polar Research Institute and the National Maritime Museum in London. To view this video see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5JNWr1PM4LM

A third video reflects the work of James Balog. Since 2007 he has been reviewing the effects of warming trends on the Arctic. This Emmy Award-winning, National Geographic photographer explores the relationship between humans and nature. Since the early 1980s he has photographed endangered polar ice. In January 2016 he began production on a feature-length documentary film, Life Tectonic (working title), exploring the environmental effects of the Anthropocene. Poseidon Expeditions Doubles Arctic Cruises In September 2019 to Ensure Prime Viewing of Northern Lights

PROVIDENCE, RI, Nov. 1, 2018 – The Arctic provides the perfect canvass for the Northern Lights and prime opportunities for viewing can be found at sea, far from land-based obstructions. One company that helps travelers observe and understand this phenomenon is Poseidon Expeditions, the go-to company for Arctic (and Antarctic) expedition cruising.

This company’s annual round-trip cruise from Iceland to East Greenland in September – a time when the northern latitudes are dark enough for excellent sightings – is so popular that it has added a second replica itinerary. Departures in 2019 of Arctic Sights and Northern Lights are scheduled for Sept.15-25 and now Sept. 6-16 where good space is still available. Rates for this 11-day cruise aboard the 54-suite Sea Spirit begin at $8,395 per person, double occupancy. Included in the rates are:

  • 1 pre-voyage night in Reykjavik at the Grand Hotel;
  • Group transfer to the ship on day of embarkation;
  • Deluxe shipboard accommodations;
  • All meals on board throughout the voyage;
  • Tea and coffee station 24 hours daily;
  • All scheduled landings/excursions (subject to weather and ice conditions);
  • Leadership throughout the voyage by experienced Expedition Leader & Expedition Team;
  • Branded Poseidon Expeditions parka (to keep);
  • Use of waterproof Wellington-style rubber boots for shore landings;
  • Complimentary Welcome and Farewell cocktails;
  • All port fees;
  • Group transfer to Keflavik International Airport (KEF) or centrally located hotel for luggage storage upon disembarkation;
  • Pre-departure materials;
  • Digital Voyage Log

The Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) are a bucket-list phenomenon that transforms the Arctic sky with dancing, rainbow-hued ribbons. However, visitors to the region in the summer months may have difficulty seeing a performance because with the sun constantly above the horizon, the sky is too bright. Near the autumnal equinox and as more solar particles interact with the atmosphere and the nights grow longer, the colors explode. This makes September a prime viewing month. The good news is that Arctic temperatures aren't yet as frigid as they are from January to March when, yes, the skies are dark but temperatures and weather conditions are inhospitable above the Arctic Circle.

Areas within the Arctic Circle at 66º North (65th parallel) have the best viewing possibilities. Those living in areas with low light pollution at 55º North (55th parallel) can also glimpse this beauty. On rare occasions New Englanders on the 45th parallel can get flashes of color as well.

As visitors come and go from Reykjavik (on the 64th parallel), and if the skies are dark enough, the Northern Lights may well play for them. But it’s on these September cruises that the magic occurs. Guests cross the Denmark Strait to a true Arctic wilderness, Scoresby Sund in East Greenland, crossing the Arctic Circle on the way.

Scoresby Sund, with some of the Arctic’s most impressive scenery, is the largest and longest fjord system in the world. Deep fjords and narrow channels that are flanked by ice-clad peaks up to 2000 meters high reach deep into the mountainous heart of Greenland. Tidewater glaciers create colossal icebergs that float with wind and tide throughout the fjord system. On shore fields of multicolored tundra are home to musk oxen and Arctic hare. This landscape – vast, open, and seemingly untouched since the beginning of time – is a hiker’s paradise.

Throughout this area are ancient Thule archeological sites, historical trappers’ huts and modern Inuit hunters’ cabins. The Inuit village of Ittoqqortoormiit (a stop on the cruise) is the only permanent settlement in the region. The community boasts an excellent museum, a gift shop, a post office, an abundance of Greenlandic sled dogs, and of course the opportunity to meet Inuit people.

The days are filled with memorable excursions, presentations by on-board experts and enough stunning scenery to fill cameras and overwhelm emotions. Seabird viewing and whale sightings can be enjoyed from panoramic open decks as well as exterior stateroom windows and balconies. Guests have the option for an extra fee of $655 to participate in the Sea Kayak Club that brings the adventurous right to the rugged coast lines where few people have paddled. Photography is a free option with an expert photographer on board to give tips and answer questions. For a complete itinerary see: https://poseidonexpeditions.com/arctic/east-greenland-arctic-sights-and-northern-lights/.

M/v Sea Spirit guests enjoy the freshness of a recent $1 million refurbishment of all 54 guest suites (square footages up to 463) and public areas. There are two multi-purpose lounges for educational programming and entertainment, a restaurant that can accommodate all passengers in one seating, a well-stocked library, and ample outdoor deck space to enjoy the polar landscapes and wildlife. Activities directed by a team of experienced polar guides and educators include Zodiac excursions, hiking and optional kayaking, along with informative presentations aboard. The ship’s expedition staff-to-passenger ratio of 1:9 is one of the best in the industry.

Prince Albert II of Monaco Opens “Polar Planet” Featuring Exquisite Photography in a Collaboration Between Filip Kulisev and Poseidon Expeditions

PROVIDENCE, RI, Oct. 9, 2018 – The results of a two-year collaboration between polar region cruise specialist Poseidon Expeditions and a world-renowned photographer, Filip Kulisev, are on display presently in Monaco at Galerie des Pêcheurs.

Prince Albert II of Monaco opened the exhibit, Polar Planet, on Oct. 2. It is scheduled to run 24 hours daily through Nov. 15, 2018. Admission is free to the public.

This is the third time that Filip Kulisev has been honored with an exhibit in Monaco. His large-scale photographs highlight the beauty and some of the most spectacular sites and wildlife of both the Arctic and Antarctic. The exhibit continues many years of cooperation between Kulisev and the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, which has three priority objectives: to limit climate change, to safeguard biodiversity and to manage water resources.

In his introduction, Prince Albert noted that Kulisev “has such a way, not only rendering species beautiful and attractive, but also depicting incredible places on our planet. His images make you want to go there for a visit. He is also incredibly skilled at capturing the very special kind of light in the polar regions.”

Nikolay Saveliev, president and founder of Poseidon Expeditions, said that the partnership between Kulisev and Poseidon – occurring over the course of more than a dozen voyages including the North Pole – has been rewarding for everyone. “Our guests were thrilled to witness Filip hard at work and saw his resulting images before anyone else in special presentations at the conclusion of each voyage. We all have great memories as well as breathtakingly beautiful photographs of our time together.”

In the 15 years that Kulisev has been traveling to both the Arctic and Antarctica, his images over that period visibly demonstrate the effects of climate change. Glaciers are shrinking and many species are losing their natural habitat.

Kulisev said that despite harsh conditions and cold weather he finds it fascinating to be able to photograph hundreds of thousands of penguins in one place on South Georgia and polar bears floating on icebergs searching for food. “There is so much to admire in the varied landscapes and fauna of Antarctica, South Georgia, the Falkland Islands, Svalbard, Iceland, Franz Josef Land and Greenland. This exhibit is my tribute to Albert II, whom I greatly appreciate for his many good works to save the oceans and persuade politicians to take measures to moderate the effects of the global warming," said Kulisev.

The opening was attended by many distinguished guests from Monaco, Russia, USA, Switzerland, Norway, Germany, Japan and Slovakia, the photographer’s home country. It is planned that the exhibition will travel to other major metropolitan centers in Europe, to be announced, over the course of the next two years.

In the past decade, world traveler and photographer Filip Kulisev has been recognized as one of the world’s best landscape photographers. He has had over 200 exhibitions in Slovakia and around the world. He is the author of nine books recording the diversity and beauty of the world's natural wonders and the stories from his trips. He has received the two highest European qualifications, Master Qualified European Photographer (MQEP) in Landscape and the British Institute of Professional Photographers (FBIPP) highest title, Fellow. He is an avid naturalist who supports activities aimed at protecting the environment for future generations.

Poseidon Expeditions Departs Edinburgh in June 2019 for 12-Day Cruise to Arctic Circle, Sailing 3 Seas to Visit Islands of 3 Countries

PROVIDENCE, RI, August 6, 2018 – A new expedition cruise program cruises from Edinburgh next spring on a 12-day exploration into the frozen north. From the Highlands to the High Arctic, Jun 3-14, 2019, passes over the Arctic Circle while crossing three seas and exploring islands representing three countries.

This cruise and the one that immediately precedes it (British Isles: Legendary History & Wild Nature May 22-June 3, 2019) represents aregional first for Poseidon Expeditions (https://poseidonexpeditions.com/), the go-to company for Arctic and Antarctic cruises. Poseidon Expeditions’ focus is on the geography, flora and fauna inhabiting the ocean landscapes through which they pass. Islands that have been inhabited for thousands of years offer opportunities for passengers to muse about life in Neolithic and Viking days.

If booked by Nov. 1, 2018, guests receive Early Bird discounts of up to 15 percent. A per person double, suite accommodation rate, with discount, is from $5,396; a per person triple rate, with discount, is $4,136. Guests travel on the recently refurbished 114-passenger Sea Spirit.

For details please see https://poseidonexpeditions.com/arctic/iceland-jan-mayen-spitsbergen/139/.

The route of this cruise crosses three seas: The North Sea off of Scotland’s northern coast; the Norwegian Sea just north of the Orkney, Shetland and Faroe Islands (all stops on the itinerary) and the Greenland Sea approaching Spitzbergen, the largest and only populated island in the Svalbard Archipelago. Passengers will also explore the flags of three countries: Scotland, Denmark and Norway. Stops on the Scottish soil of the Orkney and Shetland islands and on the Danish Faroe Islands were key to the Vikings’ logistics as they foraged south to mainland Britain in search of treasures and tillable lands. Farther north, intrepid Norwegians planted flags on Jan Mayen and Spitzbergen.

An award-winning photographer, Rick Sammon, and his wife, Susan, will be on board to host photo workshops and provide tips and advice on how to make the most of the photographic opportunities on this cruise. Rick has been named a Canon Explorer of Light. He is also a Westcott Top Pro Elite for skills in portraiture and lighting. Squarespace recently named him one of the world's best photographers.

With the exception of two days at sea, land excursions will engage guests as follows:

  • On the Orkney Archipelago they visit the Vikings’ St. Magnus Cathedral, considered the finest medieval building in the north of Scotland; and they wonder at Ring of Brodgar, a huge ceremonial circle of stones, and a Neolithic village, Skara Brae, both circa 5,000 years ago.
  • On Fair Isle in the Shetlands, they find abirders paradise with 345 species recorded here, including northern fulmars, kittiwakes, northern gannets, puffins, and great and arctic skuas.
  • In a visit to Torshavn, capital of the Faroes, they tour Kirkjubøur, in the Middle Ages the ecclesiastical center of the Faroes. On one ancient stone foundation stands a log dwelling occupied by the same Faroese family for 17 generations. The official and native language, Faroese, has Germanic roots with a grammar similar to Icelandic and Old Norse.
  • Jan Mayen hosts landscapes of breathtaking beauty, including steep cliffs favored by bird populations, and the Beerenberg, the northernmost subaerial active volcano on the planet.
  • The Svalbard Archipelago represents the quintessential frozen world of glaciers, reindeer and polar bear.  Deep fjords and narrow channels are flanked by jagged snowy mountain peaks. Immense tidewater glaciers calve icebergs into turquoise waters. Fields of flowering tundra are home to grazing reindeer and playful Arctic fox. Bountiful inshore and offshore waters are home to walrus and a wide variety of whales. The whole area is alive with migratory birds, including numerous rare species, taking advantage of summer’s fecundity in 24-hour daylight. The area of exploration contains historical remnants of whaling camps, coal mining operations, trappers’ cabins, staging areas for historic attempts to discover the North Pole, and even an abandoned polar research station. Guests disembark in Longyearbyen, the administrative capital of the Norwegian territory of Svalbard.

Sea Spirit guests enjoy the freshness of a brand-new $1 million refurbishment of all 55 guest suites (square footages up to 463) and public areas. The ship’s expedition staff-to-passenger ratio of 1:9 is one of the best in the business.

Poseidon Expeditions Spurs Interest In Cruising Russian High Arctic

PROVIDENCE, RI, July 24, 2018 –Poseidon Expeditions celebrated its 2018 summer season when two of its ships rendezvoused in July in the newest frontier in polar expedition cruising, the Russian High Arctic known as the Franz Josef Land Archipelago.

This region was off-limits to foreign travelers until recent decades; it is now largely under management of the Russian Arctic National Park System.

Meeting on July 11 at 80º 48’ N/50º 44’ E near Prince George Island, Poseidon’s 128-passenger, nuclear-powered icebreaker 50 Years of Victory and its 114-passenger expedition ship Sea Spirit together celebrated their respective first voyages of the season to this remote archipelago of 190 glaciated and snow-covered islands.

While the ships’ routings are considerably different, each has the distinction of taking intrepid polar adventurers to an area that few other ship passengers will ever have the opportunity to explore. For the ships’ meeting, the massive icebreaker paused on its route to 90º North, the geographic North Pole, even as Sea Spirit was in the midst of an eight-day exploration of the archipelago, the most in-depth in the expedition cruise industry.

“The opportunity for the two vessels to connect in such a remote spot was exciting and memorable for the guests of both ships. But for the company and for myself, it is a testament to the fact that Poseidon is able to provide several options for visiting the Franz Josef Land Archipelago,” said founder and president Nikolay Saveliev. “Just 1,000 travelers will visit the archipelago in 2018 and Poseidon has the privilege of accommodating two-thirds of these guests.” He added that all three North Pole trips aboard 50 Years of Victory and all three Franz Josef Land expeditions aboard the Sea Spirit are completely sold out this summer.

With Sea Spirit, Poseidon Expeditions (https://poseidonexpeditions.com/) also has the distinction as the only cruise operator that can travel directly from Svalbard to Franz Josef Land, where passengers clear customs and immigration in Alexandra Land. This saves approximately a day of sea travel in each direction, compared with other vessels (including 50 Years of Victory) which clear customs and immigration on mainland Russia and must travel longer and farther to attain the group of polar islands.

More days at the archipelago translate into better opportunities for wildlife viewing, and the Sea Spirit’s eight days there did not disappoint. Polar bears totaling 17 were spotted on seven days, and walrus were seen even more frequently. Guests also encountered bearded and ringed seals and humpback, bowhead and beluga whales, and myriad sea bird nesting cliffs and colonies. Reports from the Sea Spirit’s expedition leader noted that some planned activities – such as shore landings and kayaking excursions – were delayed or postponed for safety reasons because there were simply too many polar bears or walrus in the vicinity.

“There’s no place on earth quite like the Franz Josef Land Archipelago. We’re pleased to make these two unique journeys available again in 2019, with three North Pole voyages aboard the most powerful icebreaker in the world and another three in-depth expeditions of the islands aboard the Sea Spirit,” added Saveliev.

Poseidon Expeditions Introduces Environmental Initiatives and Suggests Ways Guests Can Help

PROVIDENCE, RI, June 12, 2018 – Poseidon Expeditions, the go-to company for Arctic and Antarctic expedition cruising, is giving a helping hand to marine, bird and animal life through new on-board initiatives.

“We’re all seeing the gut-wrenching photos of sea tortoises, whales and dolphins that have been victimized by the deluge of plastic in our oceans. Freeing ourselves of our dependency on things like plastic drinking straws will go a long way toward improving the health of our oceans,” said Nikolay Saveliev, owner and president of Poseidon Expeditions (https://poseidonexpeditions.com/). “We want our expedition vessels to part of the solution – not the problem.”

To this end, Poseidon Expeditions’ eco-friendly, newly instituted initiatives aboard the 114-passenger Sea Spirit include, among others,

  • removing all plastic straws and stirrers; paper straws will be available on request;
  • doing away with individual butter and jelly portions and replacing them with ramekins which eliminate the need for single-use plastics;
  • using eco-friendly laundry detergents;
  • installing bulk body wash, shampoo, and soap dispensers instead of using individual plastic bottles.

Guests planning cruises with Poseidon Expeditions might also consider:

  • bringing a reusable bottle that can be refilled with water, rather than buying disposable plastic bottles of water.
  • placing favorite body and beauty products into reusable silicone bottles and tubes instead of buying mini bottles of shampoo, conditioner or other products.
  • using only personal products that are free of harsh chemicals and micro-beads that can end up in water systems or in the air. Look for organic ingredients in recycled packaging. (Hawaiian lawmakers are considering banning sunscreens with certain chemicals because of the harm being done to coral reefs.)

On Poseidon Expeditions cruises, chefs will adhere to guidelines recommended by the Marine Stewardship Council for sustainability as regards the kinds of seafood to be served.

Saveliev underscored the importance of offering guests off-ship activities that don’t harm the environment. He said that the kayaking, bird watching and photography excursions on Poseidon Expeditions’ cruises leave no mark, just great memories. He underscored the importance of keeping distance from wildlife being observed and photographed and to respect the fragile flora and fauna ecosystems in the frozen worlds.

Poseidon Expeditions is a member of the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO), which advocates and promotes the practice of safe and environmentally responsible private-sector travel to the Antarctic. These practices will also be adhered to on cruises into Arctic regions.

The cruise departs Plymouth on England’s southwest coast, sailing north on the Irish Sea between England and Ireland. The route wraps around islands off of Scotland’s coast before concluding in Edinburgh. The intent is to explore a diversity of landscapes, wildlife and history that on most mainland visits to the UK are overlooked because accessing these islands is time-consuming. See: https://poseidonexpeditions.com/british-isles/british-isles-cruise/144/

This program is a first for Poseidon Expeditions, the go-to company for Arctic and Antarctic cruises. If booked by Nov. 1, 2018, guests receive discounts of up to 15 percent. A per person double, suite accommodation rate, with discount, is from $7,196; a per person triple rate, with discount, is $5,216. Guests travel on the recently refurbished 114-passenger Sea Spirit.

Leading a team of naturalist guides will be historian Huw Lewis-Jones. He holds a doctoral degree from Cambridge University and has served as Curator at the Scott Polar Research Instituteand the National Maritime Museum in London.

Guests investigate a micro-climate (think palm trees) on the Isles of Scilly off Cornwall’s coast, moving on to puffin breeding grounds on the Skellig Islands just off of the Republic of Ireland. Here the trip becomes a feast for birdwatchers on the lookout for the northern gannet,European storm petrel, northern fulmar, Manx shearwater, black-legged kittiwake, common guillemot and razorbill. The rich waters around the islands are home to whales, dolphins and seals.

Snowdonia National Park in Wales offers some of the wildest and most dramatic landscapes in Britain where otters, water voles, wild ponies and rare birds such as dotterel and peregrine falcon thrive. Off of Northern Ireland’s coast is Rathlin Island, with one of Europe’slargest seabird colonies. At the West Light Seabird Centre atop a sea cliff are scenes of cavorting puffins, guillemots, kittiwakes, razorbills and fulmars.

Next up are Scotland’s Inner and Outer Hebrides including Iona, home of Iona Abbey, founded in 563 AD. On St. Kilda are vestiges of a population that evacuated in the 1900s because of isolation. Today hundreds of thousands of seabirds, two early types of sheep and over 130 species of flowering plants live here. The remote Flannan Islands reveal Leach’s petrel, minke and pilot whales, and several species of dolphin.

Mainland, the largest of the Orkney Islands, is a potpourri of centuries: a well-preserved 5000-year-old village site at Skara Brae, the ancient Ring of Brodgar within the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Heart of Neolithic Orkney” and Saint Magnus Cathedral, built by 12th century Vikings.

Isle of Noss, far north in the Shetlandsdisplays towering sandstone cliffs weathered into horizontal ledges, perfect nesting sites for gannets, puffins, guillemots, shags, black-legged kittiwakes, razorbills and fulmars.

Visitors flock to Fair Isle for the internationally renowned Fair Isle Bird Observatory, and for historic crofts, lighthouses and wildflowers. Seals are common to its bays. Bass Rock, abastion of volcanic rock, hosts the world’s largest colony of northern gannets in the breeding season.

Additional highlights are:

  • Skellig Michael’s well-preserved early Christian monastery (UNESCO World Heritage Site)
  • The basalt columns of Ireland’s Giant’s Causeway
  • Conwy Castle, a 13th-century fortress in Wales representing castle life in medieval Britain (UNESCO World Heritage Site)

  • The Broch of Mousa, the finest preserved Iron Age fortification in the British Isles. This 2,000-year-old round tower is the tallest (40 feet high) broch still standing.
  • Waterford crystal
  • Mount Congreve,a magnificent 18th-century Georgian estate and botanical gardens containing thousands of plant species on 70 acres of intensively planted woodland and a four-acre walled garden
  • Shetland ponies
  • A Highland distillery
  • Tresco Abbey Garden with a collection of 20,000 exotic plants from all corners of the world

Sea Spirit guests enjoy the freshness of a brand-new $1 million refurbishment of all 55 guest suites (square footages up to 463) and public areas. Women from Europe and the Middle East To Ski 100km to Geographic North Pole

PROVIDENCE, RI, April 20, 2018 – Eleven women representing both Middle East and European countries began an historic trek earlier this week to the North Pole.

Following an early morning April 15 flight from Longyearbyen, Svalbard, the northernmost commercial airport in the world, to a floating ice station at 89º north, the group set off immediately on their 100-km adventure on cross-country skis over shifting pack ice of the Arctic Ocean.

The treacherous, overland journey is expected to take 10 days. If successful, many of these women, some of whom are first-time polar explorers, will be the first person from their country to ski the last degree to the top of the world. This team is comprised of women from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait, Slovenia, Sweden, France, Cyprus, Russia and the UK.

Poseidon Expeditions’ own Ida Olsson, 32, Arctic Wilderness Guide and Kayak Master on its polar cruises, represents Sweden.

The team will be conducting two important science experiments during the expedition and will be sharing their experiences live from the ice with schools and via social media. For updates please see the expedition team’s blog post at: http://www.euroarabianexpedition.com/expeditionlive/

They will sleep in tents on the ice and haul on sledges everything they need to survive in the Arctic. Hazards they may face include the perils of temperatures as low as minus 40C and movements of the pack ice that may split apart to reveal open water or push together to form walls of ice that have to be crossed. There is also the threat of predatory polar bears.

Preparations for the expedition have been ongoing for nearly two years including training expeditions in Iceland and Oman.

“We regularly take guests to the North Pole during the summer months on 50 Years of Victory, a powerful icebreaker,” said Nikolai Saveliev, founder of Poseidon Expeditions, which is sponsoring Olsson to ski to the North Pole. “By doing it the hard way, Ida will inspire ever more people to care about the polar wilderness we cherish.”

Olsson originally trained as a teacher before working as a wilderness and adventure guide in northern Sweden. She now lives and works on Svalbard when she is not acting as kayak master and expedition team member aboard Poseidon’s expedition ship Sea Spirit in Antarctica or the Arctic.

“I’m extremely proud to be part of this exciting expedition that brings together women from all over the world to experience together the challenging yet fragile environment of the Arctic Ocean,” said Olsson. “Having travelled all over the Arctic for many years, I have seen how precious this ecosystem is and the importance of protecting it. Our goal is to bring attention to the conservation and preservation efforts of these polar regions.”

The expedition leader, celebrated British Polar Explorer Felicity Aston MBE, said, “The world is facing global problems – such as climate change – that can only be tackled with global solutions. That requires everyone talking to each other more.”

The expedition is sponsored by cybersecurity firm Kaspersky Lab, as well as Engie, Poseidon Expeditions, OmanTel, I Feel Slovenia and others.
