Self-Guided Travel, Your Way™

Website: http://pure-adventures.com

Why Pure Adventures?

The recognized experts in self-guided cycling & hiking vacations in Europe! It is the company mission to provide exceptional self-guided cycling and hiking tour services that allow clients to experience a destination in their own unique way. Thousands of clients will agree that this format offers the most enjoyable and rewarding way to experience Europe, on and off the beaten track.

History and Founder

Since 1994 Loren Siekman has owned and directed two active travel companies that have pioneered the concept of guided and self-guided bicycle touring in Europe. First he founded Discover France which showcased that country’s attributes to biking enthusiasts in North America seeking a guided experience. As he saw an increasing number of well traveled clients asking for more of Europe and increased freedom to travel at their own pace, he founded Pure Adventures in 2004 that specialized in the self-guided, fully supported trip concept. In 2012 Siekman sold Discover France in order to focus solely on Pure Adventures.

The Self-Guided Concept

Pure Adventures has been a pioneer in popularizing the self-guided cycle touring concept for North Americans.  Since 2004, Pure Adventures has expanded and grown its offerings by focusing on the 'local experience' which is at the essence of its ‘Pure’ name.  Pure Adventures only uses the expertise of locals for guides, route development, sites to see, people to meet, where to eat, shop and experience life as a local would.   The self-guided concept is the company’s expertise and is the second Pure element for the client - it puts the traveler in control and in contact with the destination much more than if a professional guide is handling everything.   Many of the elements that Pure Adventures includes in its unique self-guided formula are now appearing in the offers of more and more tour operators worldwide.  Today’s savvy travelers are finding this to be a great way to spend less and have an awesome (and in many ways - more authentic) travel experience.

What is Self-Guided Touring?

  • You travel on the dates that work best for you and your group
  • You travel with your own small group, typically 2 to 10 travelers
  • Your route is meticulously planned by Pure Adventures’ experienced staff with local insights
  • All your lodging is taken care of and you have a choice of hotel options to fit your budget
  • All your luggage transfers are included
  • You have access to local support and emergency services 24 hours a day

Flexible

While most travelers opt for one of Pure Adventures’ pre-planned, self-guided itineraries, they can modify any of their tours to suit particular needs, budgets and desires. A client is typically offered a variety of hotels to fit their budget. And unlike guided trips with set departure dates where there is always the possibility of the operator cancelling a tour due to low participation, once set, a self-guided tour can only be cancelled by the client.

Affordable

The all-important question for many people is “how much is this going to cost?”  Prices will vary based upon the level of accommodations and duration of a trip. In general, self-guided travel with Pure Adventures averages approximately $1,200 per person for a 7-night trip. Compare this to the approximate cost of a fully guided trip (usually ranging from $1,800 to $3,000 or more for 7 nights).

Supported

On the first morning, guests are met by a local Pure Adventures representative who will get the trip off to a great start by ensuring participants are comfortable with the routes, maps and trip materials. Included in trip materials are up-to-date recommendations for dining, cultural attractions and other on-tour highlights. All luggage transfers are arranged so that bags are waiting at the next overnight stop. And should any urgent issues arise, there’s 24 hour access to a local Pure Adventures person through a local self-guided support hotline.

Off the Beaten Path

Many of the self-guided itineraries that are offered are created with a specific theme in mind; for example, riding along routes of great historical significance or visiting celebrated wine growing regions. All routes are thoroughly researched and ridden annually by Pure Adventures staff to ensure a minimum of surprises and the best possible experience. Routes are also planned with plenty of time to savor small towns and villages along the way and enjoy interacting with the locals.

Family Friendly

Children are welcome at most all hotels, but kids under the age of 10 may require special equipment such as trailers or child tandems. They can easily be provided but if requested it is recommended that parents have some prior experience at home with trailer or tandem use. We recommend discussing the proposed routes with family members and Pure Adventures trip planners to determine whether the route and attractions are suitable for the age of the kids.

Can’t Get to France This Season? Pure Adventures Brings Self-Guided Bike Vacations to New World Province of Quebec

SCOTTSDALE, AZ, May 26, 2016– Can’t get to France this season? Pure Adventures announces that its self-guided bike vacations are now being offered in the Province of Quebec. Plus with a favorable exchange rate, a vacation in Canada is more affordable than ever for Americans.

While in the early 1600s the French created the fur trade on Canada’s east coast, subsequent decades of war brought the Brits to power. But Francophiles today appreciate that the Province of Quebec retains a French imprimatur as regards language, food and hospitality. Plus the province offers one of the best organized networks of bicycle pathways and trails anywhere in North America.

Pure Adventures (http://pure-adventures.com/) has a special affinity for all things French and for bicycles. In fact the company pioneered self-guided bicycle tours in France before expanding across the globe. Now an itinerary on this side of the Pond recognizes this province’s privileged French heritage as it allows guests to embrace the hospitality of Quebec at a personal pace, on two wheels.

“The good news for Americans is that the exchange rate for US dollars over Canadian dollars makes it more inexpensive than ever to visit our neighbors across the border,” said Loren Siekman, founder and director of Pure Adventures. “This spring and summer the predicted exchange rate should hover at around $1 US dollar to $1.3 Canadian.”

Explored over seven leisurely days and six nights is a swath of countryside called Saguenay Lac Saint-Jean. This region is accessed by riding east out of Montreal to Quebec City along the St. Lawrence River and then north to Lac St-Jean, Quebec’s third largest lake that creates the Saquenay Fjord, one of the world’s longest, that eventually flows into what becomes the Gulf of St Lawrence.

The rides average 50km daily through this historic playground that includes world-class bike trails that are among Quebec’s most popular cycling routes: Route Verte (Green Route) is a network of dedicated bicycle trails on both sides of the Saint Lawrence River leading to Quebec, and the Véloroute des Bleuets (Blueberry) is another dedicated cycling route around Lac Saint-Jean. Guests also cycle along Chemin du Roy (King's Highway) enroute to Old Quebec City. (Pure Adventures suggests that guests arrive in Montreal a day before the tour begins so they can walk the cobblestones of Old Montreal.)

The well organized and marked network of 350 km of bike trails allows cyclists to admire the beauty of countless beaches, lakes, rivers and traditional Quebecois villages as they ride. Stops along the way are a must for tastings at microbreweries (Microbrasserie du Lac, La Chouape, Le Coureur des Bois), for samples at cheese-makers (fromagerie Perron and fromagerie Médard) and for smatterings of culture at historic sites. This self-guided tour is a road cycling trip that can also be accomplished by hybrid bike; the entire ride is on paved roads.

Guests enjoy a variety of accommodations ranging from white-washed cottages reminiscent of Brittany or Normandy to dwellings that might once have housed aristocrats. Sometimes guest rooms enjoy views of the lake and at one lodging breakfast is taken in an art gallery. All accommodations have been curated to provide comfort and off-bike access to shops and restaurants along the bicycle route.

This tour can be arranged for a minimum of two people from now through Oct. 15, 2016. The per person rate, double, is from US$1040 for seven days and six nights of immersion in French culture a la historic villages where the French language is pervasive. For more information please see http://pure-adventures.com/show-tour/181/Canada+Quebec+Bike+Tour

The trip rate includes personal orientations to review the route book and trip details; six nights lodging with breakfasts; luggage transfers; detailed road book with maps, cue sheets and suggestions for visitation and site information as well as restaurant suggestions; pre-travel documentation and information; pre and post travel assistance and travel planning; vehicle transfers to Saguenay and return to Quebec; emergency telephone support to local support staff during daytime office hours; Canadian taxes; bike rental with associated gear (hybrid bikes are included and there’s an option to change to cross/road bikes at no added cost). Custom tours for groups can also be arranged.

Self-Guided Cycling Vacations Represent Excellent Value – But Buyer Beware

SCOTTSDALE, AZ, April 5, 2016– Imitation may be the highest form of flattery. But when it comes to travel look-alikes, beware.

For example, the concept of the self-guided cycling vacation introduced in 1994 by bike tour pioneer Loren Siekman of Pure Adventures (http://pure-adventures.com/) was created in response to North America’s growing demand for independent yet professionally supported active travel.

Since then, the marketplace has been crowded with competitors, many of whom offer packages that are deficient in one way or another. While, according to Siekman, competition creates awareness, all offers are not created equal, underscores the founder and owner of Pure Adventures.

“The result for the consumer can be disappointing, at a minimum,” says Siekman, “We started in the 1990s with a Euro model tour and adapted it for the North American traveler.  We added more support like arrival orientations, raised the quality of hotels, built easy-to-understand navigation tools, included local experiences and significantly raised the quality of equipment. We tell customers that our self-guided tours are just like a guided trip in terms of quality and services but without the hassle of fixed travel dates, minimum group participation or strange trip mates to put up with. Our clients are always connected to us remotely, even though there’s no guide and sag vehicle on the horizon.”

Pure Adventures’ original version of self-guided is about half the cost of a guided trip, averaging $1,400 per person for a seven-night trip. A typical guided European cycling trip starts at $2,800.

But it’s buyer beware when looking at the preponderance of self-guided programs out there, advises Siekman.

“For example, in Europe, many local outfitters like to set fixed departure dates to maximize group numbers and lower their costs for luggage handling.  Sometimes luggage transfers aren’t even included in trip prices. Navigation tools also vary from company to company from non-existent to high tech,” adds Siekman.

Questions that he suggests should be asked include; “How thoroughly researched are opportunities for cultural experiences? What is the quality of lodging and what meals are included?  How new are the bikes and equipment and what are the qualifications of the people maintaining them?”

Pure Adventures recommends that consumers create their own matrix of inclusions and then do a comparison study. To consider are:

-       Freedom to choose travel dates and customize the itinerary to their needs

-       Local support – what is it, who is it, and what can be expected?  Meet and greet, telephone support throughout the trip, transportation if needed, arrival and departure transfers, any back stop for bad weather, sickness, or other unforeseen circumstances like mechanical breakdowns?

-       Rental equipment and navigation tools – what is included, or how much extra is it and what support is provided?  What technology is available and how tech savvy must the user be to easily utilize it?

-       Lodging – an important area of scrutiny; be sure to look at ratings and seasonality, room category, group discounts, meals on site and what level menu, three course or five course?

-       Responsive – in the off season it’s easy to get email responses or phone calls, but what about when it is high season?  Is there a dedicated agent assigned and available to accommodate your needs and time restraints?

-       Language, insurance, licenses, recourse, payment conditions, and so on.

“Our self-guided biking and hiking tours are truly the best value, situated between a fully supported and date-limited guided trip and a do-it-yourself option. On our trips, you travel on your own terms with all the help and support needed letting you focus on what matters most – enjoying your vacation,” Siekman goes on to explain.  “Our company never cancels on its clients and can put trips together at the 11th hour in most of our destinations.”

Self-Guided Cycling Tours in North America include California, Colorado, and Arizona and just new in 2016 is Quebec. Pure Adventures also offers self-guided programs in 16 different countries throughout Europe.

A must-read for anyone considering a self-guided bike tour is The Beginner’s Guide to Self-guided Cycling Adventure Holidays, a new e-book by Pure Adventures’ founder Loren Siekman. This guide explores the reasons behind the growth in self-guided cycling, the differences behind different types of cycling holidays and how to choose a self-guided holiday tour operator (including a list of where to research tour companies). Short and to the point, this free e-book is an unbiased starting point for cyclists who have been on guided tours and feel ready for a more adventurous holiday experience.

SCOTTSDALE, AZ, Feb. 10, 2016– Slowing life down on a bicycle has long been a vacation option in the States as well as in Europe. “Myanmar, Vietnam, Thailand and Cambodia are very affordable and accessible to cyclists,” says Loren Siekman, founder/owner. “Our knowledgeable bilingual, in-country guides help us arrange bike rentals, unique lodging, ride itineraries and local cultural experiences found nowhere else. Popa, home of macaque monkeys and nats (spirits), or exploring a wine making venture and traditional silk weaving techniques of the Inthar people near Lake Inle. The pastoral world fades in Yangon (Rangoon), a bustling city that mixes up the stupas of ancient and modern Burma with British colonial architecture and modern edifices. Pure Adventures Listens to its Riders, Fine-Tunes Bicycle Tours in Italy, Spain and France For More Easy-Going Rides, Added Time to Wine and Dine

SCOTTSDALE, AZ, Jan. 20, 2016– The pioneer of self-guided cycling vacations, Pure Adventures (http://pure-adventures.com/), announces three new self-guided bicycle tours of Italy’s Tuscany, France’s Dordogne and Spain’s La Rioja regions.

Food, wine and history extraordinaire are key elements of these tours that offer cyclists the luxury of traveling at their own pace and pausing when and where they wish, but without foregoing road and route trip assistance and lodging and luggage logistics.

Italy has long been a favorite Pure Adventures destination. This new take, spurred on by past rider feedback, Italy - Tuscany Wine & History, is an eight-day/seven-night program that shaves off some of the Tuscan hills and provides the option for car transfers. With shorter rides there is more time to enjoy the upscale hotels in their historic settings. This tour starts in the Renaissance town of Pienza, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here guests may opt to partake of the hot springs and spa of Bagno Vignoni. Other villages include Montepulciano, recognized worldwide because of its wine, and Montalcino -- think Brunello. And the tour only gets better with a Tuscan favorite, Siena, the medieval hilltop town of San Gimignano and Volterra, a municipality since Roman times. Then it’s Bon Viaggio as guests transfer to nearby Florence. This tour is from 1215 €/person. A four-night version can also be arranged.See: http://pure-adventures.com/show-tour/22/Italy+Tuscany+Wine+&+History

Moderate distances over modestly rolling country including unpaved country lanes through vineyards distinguish the seven-day/six-night Spain - Rioja Wine Cycling Tour through the wine villages of La Rioja Alavesa. The route encourages the discovery the region’s history and enjoyment of the mosaic of landscapes of the southern Basque region at the foothills of the Pyrenees. Here vineyards form a pattern over the landscape. The route mainly runs along minor and rural paved roads and, occasionally, on dirt roads.

The wines of La Rioja are world famous yet still made in the old world ways by many local growers and producers. Guests may even find the stone basins in the fields where grapes were once stomped by the workers to make the juice for wines. This adventure begins and ends in Logroño. Day 2 is a cycle to the village of Laguardia, a medieval village known as La Rioja Alavesa. The departure from Logroño is by the Way of Saint James, where guests may meet many pilgrims. After a ride through a virtual sea of vineyards, Day 4 brings Santo Domingo de la Calzada, a village linked to the Way of Saint James (Camino de Santiago) from its origins back in the 11th Century. Again, guests may expect to meet more pilgrims while cycling to San Millán, cradle of the Spanish language. Rates for this seven-night trip are from 1587 €/person. See: http://pure-adventures.com/show-tour/153/Spain+Rioja+Wine+Cycling+Tour

In France cycling guests may experience the seven-day/six-night France – Best of Dordogne Cycling Tour combining the best of the Dordogne countryside and mixed with vineyards, chateaux and the grottos of prehistory. Guests arrive in Souillac where the hotel restaurant serves traditional specialties from the Quercy-Périgourdin with a modern, innovative twist. Day 2 is a cycle to Sarlat, a town highly representative of 14th century France. Day 3 is a ride to Montignac to visit the pre-history site of Lascaux II enroute to Les Eyzies and followed on Day 4 by La Roque-Gageac on the banks of the Dordogne River against some small cliffs and voted one of the most beautiful villages of France. The drama of Rocamadour comes next, a town built against a cliff and an historic pilgrimage site. The last ride on Day 6 stops at the Grottoes of Padirac for an underground boat ride in the grottos before arriving in Carennac and traveling on to Souillac. The rate is from 1060 €/person. See: http://pure-adventures.com/show-tour/28/France+%E2%80%93+Best+of+Dordogne+Cycling+Tour

The itineraries include lodging at three and four star accommodations, all breakfasts, some dinners (France and Spain only), luggage transfers from hotel to hotel, local emergency support throughout the tour, arrival orientation and bike set up, route maps and route cue sheets with suggestions for visitation and site information, all pre and post travel planning services and a package of pre-travel documents sent electronically to help prepare for each trip. In Spain and France there are local orientations with a local support guide.

In addition to self-guided programs, Pure Adventures offers other ways to organize domestic and international bicycling and hiking vacations: Guided vs Self-Guided vs Supported, Self-Directed, See: http://pure-adventures.com/blog/2014/06/23/how-to-choose-the-perfect-bicycle-vacation/#.VUk4UvlVhHw

Pure Adventures Guests in Spain Experience Best in World Cuisine on Bicycle Trips through Catalonia

SCOTTSDALE, AZ, June 11, 2015– Pioneers of self-guided cycling vacations, Pure Adventures (http://pure-adventures.com/), arranges tours for bicycle-loving and food-driven clients from April through October in Spain’s Catalonia region.

In combination with moderately challenging daily rides, guests experience gourmet dining on the company’s Spain - Catalonia Gastronomic 7 Nights Cycling Tour that begins in Girona, home to one of the world’s top restaurants.  This trip has been the highest rated and best-selling Pure Adventures offering over the last 11 years, popular for both the rides and cuisine matched with charming accommodations.

For thoseamateur chefs at home, there’s Spain - Biking and Cooking 7 Nights that brings cyclists into Catalonian kitchens to learn and cook alongside local chefs.  The icing on the cake is that participants will get to enjoy their hard work afterward.

Located in the northeast section of Spain, Catalonia is one of the world’s most diverse and scenic destinations and home to some of Europe’s most highly celebrated restaurants. The coastline, known as the Costa Brava, also happens to be a cycling hotspot.

The itineraries begin and end in Girona. Those planning their trip far enough in advance may be able to snag a reservation at El Celler de Can Roca where three brothers are at the helm of what Restaurant Magazine named #1 in its 2015 World’s Best 50 Restaurants competition.

All Pure Adventures self-guided cycling trips begin with orientation and bike fitting, and all of the Costa Brava trips visit both the Pyrenees foothills and coastline. Much of this region is a naturally protected area. Prawns, jamón, tapas and Arros a La Cassola a la Catalan help satisfy appetites after stops that may include a bird sanctuary, Botanical Gardens, museums, medieval walled towns, wine cellars, olive oil mills and gastronomy centers.

Spain - Catalonia Gastronomic Cycling Tour is priced from €1443 per person, double and includes seven nights deluxe lodging, daily breakfast, four gourmet dinners (two of them tasting menus), luggage transfers, local Girona-based emergency support, road books with riding route maps and cue sheets, and suggestions for places to see and local dining. One tasting menu dinner is at Restaurant La Plaçain Madremanya where guests feast on eight mini courses, each complimenting the other.

Those venturing into the heat of the kitchens on Pure Adventures’ Spain - Biking and Cooking adventure will become well-versed in the fare of the coastal Empordà region after visiting terraced olive groves dating to the ancient Greeks, rice paddies near Pals, kitchen gardens, small farms and the sea. Grapes have been staggering down steep slopes here since the Phoenicians introduced vines in the 5th century BC. Foodies will also stop at fish markets and visit a sheep farm (or olive oil farm) sampling local products. Along the route tasting menus and private cooking classes are woven in. The class at Espai del Peix invites guests to spend three hours concentrating on four different dishes followed by lunch with the chef and a guided visit of the port where the fishing boats come in. The per person, double occupancy rate starts at €1381.

“While we love guests who plan well in advance, we can also accommodate 11th hour reservations for our guaranteed-departure self-guided bicycle trips,” said Loren Siekman, Pure Adventures founder/owner. These trips allow one or several family members and friends traveling together the peace of mind that all essential travel plans are taken care of before they begin their trip. Flexible start dates for departure mean that clients can travel according to their own schedules; itineraries can also be modified on an as-needed basis.

“You pick who you travel with; a spouse, a child, a friend. You are not lumped together with a group of strangers on our self-guided trips,” he said.

Clients can choose varied itinerary options in the dozen or more countries in Europe where Pure Adventures has bicycling and trekking programs. The self-guided concept emphasizes the freedom to choose travel dates, departures and even “days off” as well as flexibility of pace, duration, start times and dates and special requests. These trips are more affordable than guided trips without sacrificing quality hotels, meals, routes, luggage transfers, orientation and more that the company organizes. Behind the tour is the company’s support through onsite personal orientation, in country bilingual support and transfers.

Pure Adventures Never Cancels Departures On Self-Guided Bicycle Trips

SCOTTSDALE, AZ, May 22, 2015– Pioneers of self-guided cycling vacations, Pure Adventures (http://pure-adventures.com/tours/self-guided-tours.php), offers travelers real peace of mind when booking a trip with them. With no minimum number of participants to reach on a trip, this company will never cancel a self-guided departure once booked.

This is one selling point to consider along with a recommendation to look attheir “off-peak” spring and early summer cycling and hiking programs in Europe this year.

Fewer crowds, weather accommodating active vacations, lavender and poppy fields abloom, lower air fares and the strength of the dollar in Europe become value-added rationales for spring travel, said Loren Siekman, Pure Adventures founder/owner.

“We can accommodate 11th hour reservations for our guaranteed-departure self-guided bicycle trips,” he added. These trips allow one or several family members and friends traveling together the peace of mind that travel plans are in hand before they begin their trip. Flexible start dates for departure mean that clients can travel according to their own schedules; itineraries can also be modified on an as-needs basis.

“You pick who you travel with, a spouse, a child, a friend. You are not lumped together with a group of strangers on self-guided plans,” he said.

Because there’s no minimum number of guests required for a self-guided departure (you can even do it solo if you wish), this translates to no disappointments because of canceled or delayed departures. The staff can even help bail out folks whose trip was cancelled by another tour operator that couldn’t meet required minimums.

He cited an example of a client, Eric of Rockport, ME, whose trip with another company in Spain was canceled on March 29 for travel this spring. The couple had already booked air and pre and post-trip extensions in a particular region.

“They just needed a new trip in between. They didn't have a lot of time to find a new trip that could work for those exact dates but we accommodated them. On April 13 they booked a self-guided bicycle tour in Spain with us and are traveling May 26 to June 1,” reports Siekman. See the trip they booked: http://pure-adventures.com/show-tour/73/Cordoba+to+Granada+Moorish+Spain+Cycling

Clients can choose varied itinerary options in the dozen or more countries in Europe where Pure Adventures has bicycling and trekking programs. For example, in Spain are, among others, a wine and food focused 'Gastronomic Catalonia Cycling Tour' that has been a best seller for 10 years; or a seven-night cycle through the white villages of Andalusia. If people prefer walking, Pure Adventures offers a section of the famous Camino de Santiago de Compostela route that cuts across the La Rioja wine region.

Moving from Spain to Italy brings more opportunities for self guided options both on bicycles and on foot. Great for last-minute planners are self-guided hiking tours of four highly desired regions of Italy: Cinque Terre, the Amalfi Coast, Tuscany and Lake Como. Throughout Italy are options for self-guided bicycle tours as well offered by Pure Adventures.
