More Intimate, Luxurious Tahitian Option Comes with Special Travel Package Promotion If Booked by March 31, 2016
TAHOE CITY, CA, Jan. 13, 2016– Small ship cruise expert AdventureSmith Explorations (http://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com/) has added the truly unique, 24-guest luxury yacht Island Passage to its portfolio. From May through October it will conduct eight- and eleven-day roundtrip cruises on this yacht through one of the world’s most romantic stretches of water.
“Traditionally cruises on these waters are aboard much larger vessels accommodating from 120 guests and up,” said Todd Smith, AdventureSmith Explorations’ visionary founder and president. “In stark contrast, the new Tahitian Affair that begins and ends in Bora Bora offers unparalleled intimacy in a relaxing, lagoon-cruising style highly suited to this environment.”
The per person rate, from $4,540 for an 8-day cruise, includes on-board accommodation, meals, all non-alcoholic drinks during cruise, wine with dinner, shore-excursions as per the itinerary, use of kayaks, tenders, snorkel and fishing equipment carried onboard, and an airport ferry transfer. An alternate 11-day itinerary is also offered starting at $5,845 per person, double.
To celebrate the introduction of this new Tahitian cruise option, AdventureSmith Explorations is offering a special booking promotion; guests can reserve Tahitian Affair cruise by March 31, 2016 and receive a complimentary travel package that covers airport transfers, domestic flights and hotel accommodation in Papeete. The package includes arrival transfer to airport hotel, one night at Intercontinental Resort Papeete (or similar), transfer to airport (or pier for 11-day cruise), and return domestic flights to and from Bora Bora (or from Bora Bora to Papeete for 11-day) for cruise. This offer is valid on new bookings only and is subject to availability.
Island Passage cruises only three to four hours daily on average before laying anchor each evening. This translates to an unhurried pace and ample opportunity for swimming, snorkeling, kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding at will from the motus or small reef islands that only a small vessel can access. Guests may also opt to swim with sting rays and sharks, or to embark on a fishing excursion. The Island Passage’s 7.2-meter aluminum fishing boat is equipped with rods, tackle and gear for line (rod/pole) or deep sea angling. The talented chef is always happy to prepare the fish that guests catch.
For additional fees, guests who are scuba-certified can arrange to dive off a dive boat that will pull up alongside Island Passage; and they can sightsee by helicopter as the vessel has a helipad for a six-seat helicopter.
When they can pull themselves out of the turquoise water, guests can tour village life on the islands of Tahaá, Raiatea and Huahine, visit a vanilla plantation, local markets and the Maeva Marae archaeological site. They may also enjoy being the audience for a local choir and learning how to crack coconuts.
While on board they mingle in the generously spaced dining and salon area and on the expansive aft deck. Oversize 175-square-foot staterooms and 195-square-foot and 235-square-foot suites all have ocean views and are appointed with fine linens, French soaps and toiletries, and fresh flowers.
Menus include local seafood and the best New Zealand organic lamb and Santo beef, fresh produce selected from local farmer's markets and award-winning cheeses, all presented with a strong European flair. The onboard wine cellar brims with award-winning wines and is frequently updated with new releases plus the Island Passage's revolving collection that is personally selected from the crew's favorite boutique vineyards.

TAHOE CITY, CA, Dec. 8, 2015– Small ship cruise expert AdventureSmith Explorations (http://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com/) has just revealed its list of new trip offerings for next year. These small ship cruises include regions recently opened for cruising, along with new routes and the introduction of state-of-the-art, newly built vessels.
“Where there’s curiosity and desire to experience some place new and where we’re seeing our established destinations explored in a new way are two of the major themes in our 2016 new trip line-up,” said Todd Smith, AdventureSmith Explorations’ founder and director.
The Top New Cruises for 2016 Include:
Tahiti
The 24-guest Island Passage sails May through October in Tahiti before returning to New Zealand for the austral summer. The new cruise, Tahitian Affair, sails over eight days round-trip from Bora Bora, also visiting the islands of Tahaá, Raiatea and Huahine. This is an active cruise with kayaking, fishing, swimming, snorkeling and stand-up paddleboarding spliced in with visits to a vanilla plantation, local markets and the Maeva Marae archaeological site. Time will also be spent listening to a local choir and learning how to crack coconuts.
Cuba
The US embargo against Cuba, in place since 1960, once prevented ordinary Americans from traveling to Cuba, but now with a special visa under the provision of a “people-to-people exchange”, US citizens can visit on properly licensed tours. The new Cuba People to People Cruise aboard the 49-guest Panorama sail cruiser focuses on bringing travelers into contact with Cuban people, culture and their communities. Departures start in late December and run through April 2016 for the cruise’s inaugural season. Panorama and Panorama II, with their white sails and masts, provide a romantic yet modern home base.
Peru
According to AdventureSmith, the Amazon River and its tributaries represent a hot destination with travelers right now, with high- and low-water seasons providing a varied travel experience year-round. One new itinerary and vessel recently introduced is the newly built 44-guest Amazon Discovery, an all-suite riverboat that sails round-trip from Iquitos and includes a visit to a private reserve on Monkey Island, home to seven different species. The Amazon Discovery Cruise offers seven-day departures year-round, with the inaugural voyage sailing in December 2015.
Croatia
The Dalmatian Coast Cruise utilizes, among other sister ships, a 2015-built vessel, the 38-guest Infinity,on explorations of the Adriatic Sea coastline between Split and Dubrovnik over eight days. These port towns are featured in the popular Game of Thrones HBO series. The show’s fictional city of King’s Landing is filmed in Dubrovnik, with Split also appearing in scenes. Sailings start at $1,425 per person and start in May 2016.
Galapagos Islands, Ecuador
The 90-guest Santa Cruz II made its maiden voyage last October and is the star in AdventureSmith’s Santa Cruz Galapagos Cruise, the top pick for what’s new and exciting in the Galapagos for 2016. The completely refurbished vessel has been refitted for the Galapagos Islands’ style of cruising, and it represents a 58 percent increase in passenger space and a 31 percent reduction in fuel consumption over its predecessor. New Zealand
Voted by Lonely Planetas its fifth top region to travel to in 2016, New Zealand’s Waiheke Island is making many travelers’ lists for 2016. AdventureSmith Explorations Suggests - Cruise a Park
TAHOE CITY, CA, Nov. 10, 2015– Small ship cruise expert AdventureSmith Explorations (http://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com/) in the spirit of 2016’s National Park Centennial Celebration offers the most unique way to experience our National Parks: cruise a park.
While Alaska has the whale’s share of cruises in National Parks, and thus choices of ship size and amenities, the San Juan Islands and Oregon’s Columbia River are key players as well.
ALASKA
Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve covers over three million acres with open ocean and fjord coastlines spanning most of its perimeter. This means that the small vessels that AdventureSmith Explorations employs access many of the coves and landings around hundreds of miles. Examples of itineraries here are three eight-day programs: Exploring Muir’s Wilderness on the 84-guest Safari Endeavor; Northern Passages & Glacier Bay on the 60-guest Wilderness Adventurer, 74-guest Wilderness Explorer or 76-guest Wilderness Discoverer; and Discoverers Glacier Country on the 22-guest Safari Quest, the 36-guest Safari Explorer, the 60-guest Wilderness Adventurer or the 84-guest Safari Endeavour. Itineraries have themed departures the week of Aug. 25, 2016 celebrating the Centennial, with commemoration gifts, guest speakers, evening onboard presentations focused on the history of the National Parks, surprise birthday celebrations and special presentations by Park Rangers on board while in Glacier Bay.
For those that want to see as much of Glacier Bay National Park as possible on a cruise, the six-day Glacier Bay Adventure Cruise is the only Inside Passage small ship cruise that spends most of its itinerary inside the park. The itinerary travels from waterfall-laden Geike Inlet to the barren mountain faces of the East and West arms of Glacier Bay National Park, then routes outside the park to Point Adolphus for whale watching. Hundreds of miles of glacial fjords are here for kayaking, hiking and small ship cruising. The base of exploration is the historic 12-passenger small ship M/V Sea Wolf, owned and operated by Alaskans.
Kenai Fjords National Park, on the edge of the Kenai Peninsula south of Anchorage, covers an area of nearly 670,000 acres, 51 percent of which is ice. A number of lodge-based itineraries allow guests to spend ample time on the water boating through Kenai Fjords. To access most of these remote lodges, guests embark by boat from Seward on a five-hour wildlife and tidewater glacier journey. Kenai Fjords Backcountry Explorer over seven days reveals by raft and boat and on shore the many of the activities and animals on the Native-owned, 1,700-acre Pedersen Lagoon Wildlife Sanctuary. The eight-day Ultimate Alaska Adventure pairs backcountry adventure and wild Alaska by sea kayaking in Kenai Fjords National Park, a helicopter landing onto a glacial snowpack, a floatplane journey to a remote mountain lake and more.
LOWER 48
Olympic National Park, at nearly 1 million acres along Washington’s coast, is famed for its diversity of ecosystems and rich cultural history. Olympic Wilderness & San Juan Islands is an eight-day-expedition along this coastlinefrom the comfort of the 60-guest Wilderness Adventurer or the 76-guest Wilderness Discoverer. Kayaks and paddleboards sail aboard, allowing guests to actively explore the park’s coves and canals.
Lewis & Clark National Historical Park at Fort Clatsop in Astoria, Oregon, is a hub focusing on the lore of early explorers. Two small ship itineraries visiting here herald the legacy of two great western rivers: the Columbia and the Snake.Columbia & Snake Rivers Journey over seven days embraces culture and history with food and wine bounties of the Pacific Northwest. This trip recently acquired Food Alliance affiliation ensuring that local and sustainable are prominent in in every culinary presentation. Guests will be on board either 62-passenger National Geographic Sea Bird or 62-passenger National Geographic Sea Lion. Over eight days on Legacy of Discovery guests aboard the 88-guest S.S. Legacy that emulates a turn-of-century steamer traverse the nearly 1,000 miles of history on the Columbia River Gorge.
ARRIVE BY TRAIN OR PLANE
Some of AdventureSmith Explorations’ itineraries define remote to its core, with guests going beyond the boat, being transported to a National Park by small plane or train. There are fly-to itineraries accessing Katmai National Park including Brown Bears of Katmai, a five-day program recommended as a cruise extension. On Denali Backcountry Explorer guests explore the wilderness from a lodge deep in Denali National Park and Preserve with access that may include a bus or train from Anchorage.
Alaska Coast to Denali is a cruise-a-park highlight, visiting two national parks over seven days via boat and train. The itinerary starts with a small boat cruise into a Kenai Fjords National Park lodge, travels overland to Denali National Park and Preserve and then concludes with a scenic train ride on the Alaska Railroad to Anchorage.

Company Reports 30 Percent Increase in Alaska Cruising, Adds New Itineraries and Ships to Fill Rising Demand
TAHOE CITY, CA, Oct. 28, 2015– Small ship cruise expert AdventureSmith Explorations (http://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com) specializes in cruises that probe Alaska’s wilderness and wildlife on both sea and land.
Always a popular destination for adventure travelers, Alaska is seeing “off the charts” interest according to local tourism officials and AdventureSmith Explorations travel consultants. “Demand for our small ship cruises and land packages in Alaska increased an unprecedented 30 percent in 2015 over the previous year,” said Todd Smith, AdventureSmith founder and president. “And the trend continues with advanced bookings for 2016 cruises the strongest they’ve ever been at this point in the preseason!”
To fulfill the public’s desire for wilderness cruising in Alaska, Smith’s company announces an expanded portfolio of new itineraries and new small ships and yachts available in Alaska waters for 2016:
-Exploring Muir’s Wilderness aboard the 84-guest Safari Endeavor over eight days visits sights that inspired John Muir including some of the richest whale waters in Southeast Alaska, Icy Strait. Guests venture into Glacier Bay National Park and Port Houghton, synonymous with the ultimate in Alaskan wilderness where sightings of blue heron, bald eagles, harbor seals, oystercatchers or black bear are the norm. The per person, double rate is from $4,695. Home base is Juneau.
-Yachter’s Alaskan Frontier focuses on active luxury with upscale yacht accommodations and services. Guests spend eight days aboard the 22-guest Safari Quest getting nose to nose with iceberg-rich Endicott Arm and Dawes Glacier, in addition to kayaking and hiking in the remote, rugged cove of Port Houghton, whale watching in Frederick Sound and Icy Strait and hiking through the lush and immense terrain of the Tongass National Forest. Home port is Juneau. The per person double rate is from $7,195. Minimum age is 14.
-Alaska’s Islands, Whales & Glaciers features eight days aboard the intimate 10-guest yacht Misty Fjord that in 2016 is new to AdventureSmith Explorations. Guests cruise between Sitka and Juneau or enjoy an alternative route from Petersburg or Ketchikan. Native culture and off the beaten path explorations along with sea kayaking, hiking and zodiac adventures highlight this trip, getting guests off ship and exploring Southeast Alaska as much as possible. A hover flight at Taku Glacier brings guests onto an amphibious hovercraft vehicle designed to travel over ice, water, sandbars and grasslands. Home ports are Sitka and Juneau. The per person double rate is from $5,450.
-Sikumi Custom Alaska Cruise is aboard the eight-guest MV Sikumi, the smallest vessel now in AdventureSmith’s Alaska line-up. A popular highlight is the exceptional fishing that is offered on board. The ship goes out for cruises of seven days without the confines of a rigid schedule. Daily excursions include kayaking, hiking, fishing, whale viewing, visits to sea lion rookeries, a day at the glaciers (unforgettable) and other exciting stops. Common sights are whales, bears (brown and black), seals, sea lions, Dall porpoises and bald eagles. The per person double rate is from $5,950. The cruise begins in Petersburg and concludes in Juneau.
-Glacier Bay & Island Adventure offers a choice of vessels including the newly upgraded and renovated Chichagof Dream, added to the route for 2016. This 74-guest expedition ship adds significant cabin space as it replaces the 40-guest Alaskan Dream, now sailing other itineraries. Operated by members of the Tlingit Kaagwaantaan Clan, the Glacier Bay and Island Adventure has a focus on Alaska's nature, history and First Nations culture. This is an eight-day trip from $3,379 per person double. This program begins in Sitka and disembarks in Juneau.
What Sets Wilderness Cruising Apart
Wilderness cruising, as offered by AdventureSmith Explorations, differs from a typical big ship cruise that traditionally travels from one port to another on a predefined schedule. Wilderness cruises typically leave the port and spend the entire time away from civilization, exploring nature and wildlife on a flexible schedule that takes into account weather and wildlife when deciding where to go.
A flexible schedule means guests can linger longer when wildlife is spotted. For instance, a wilderness cruise may stop the ship and stay for an hour or two when whales are sighted or hang around the face of a particularly active glacier. A hallmark of wilderness cruising is also the ability to get off the ship away from port. Specially outfitted ships use small inflatable boats to explore away from the ship or to ferry guests ashore for wilderness hiking. Many are also outfitted with kayaks, paddleboards and snorkeling or other equipment allowing travelers to explore an area up close, away from tourist crowds. Wilderness cruises are inherently best aboard small ships that have the ability to cruise close to shore where wildlife is found and to reach quite coves where off-vessel activities can take place. A wilderness cruise is perfect for nature-oriented travelers seeking to actively explore wild lands up close without sacrificing the comfort and convenience offered by small ships.

Unprecedented Promotion - Buy One Get One Free Antarctica Sale One Week Only – Book Between September 21 to 25, 2015.
TAHOE CITY, CA, Sept. 21, 2015– Small ship cruise expert AdventureSmith Explorations (http://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com), now with an expanded Antarctica cruise program, suggests moving one’s trip-of-a-lifetime higher up on the bucket list, before fuel and airline consolidations become rate deterrents and effects of climate change impact and alter the natural experience. A rare promotion just released may help make that dream a reality.
Buy One Get One Free Antarctica Sale (One Week Only)
There has never been a better deal on Antarctica cruises than AdventureSmith’s limited “Buy One Get One Free” promotion. But interested travelers need to move fast! The one-week sale begins Sept. 21, 2015 and ends Sept. 25, 2015. For a full list of ships, cruise dates and particulars see: http://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com/buy-one-get-one-free-antarctica-sale-one-week-only
Why go now? Smaller ships plying this region’s waters are slowly being replaced by larger expedition vessels. As ship sizes increase it becomes harder to provide as intimate an experience with meaningful time ashore for all guests, said Todd Smith, founder and director of AdventureSmith Explorations, who has positioned his team as the international experts in cruising Antarctic waters by small ship.
“Antarctica has been ‘discovered’ by mainstream travelers and is on many ‘must-do’ vacation lists. The short season matched with limited departures aboard small ships mean most cruises sail at full capacity. We suggest that travelers book nine to 12 months in advance for the best selection of cruises, cabins and activities. This also helps ensure the best price,” Smith said.
The urgency to travel here now is underscored by environmental threats in addition to global warming: overfishing, invasive species, pollution, exploitation of minerals, oil and gas and even threats from too much tourism.
“People hear reports of declining penguin populations and icebergs the size of Rhode Island breaking off and feel a sense of urgency to see Antarctica now, before it becomes spoiled. It is our hope that industry and humanity will come together to address these issues and Antarctic conservation will take hold to prevent further degradation of the polar environment,” he continued. “It is our hope that by responsibly sending travelers to experience Antarctica in person we will create an army of advocates for its protection and the larger environmental issues that affect Antarctica and the entire planet.”
AdventureSmith Explorations’ recently added Antarctic ships and cruises for the 2015-2016 season fall in line with this responsible travel. Below is a summary of the additions:

The 88-guest Ushuaia at 278 feet is among the smallest ships operating in Antarctica. Because of its size, it can bring guests closer to land. The ice-strengthened, well-appointed polar vessel offers ample deck space and an open bridge policy that invites guests to observe the navigational operations of the ship. A full complement of inflatable landing craft ensures landings twice daily to access by foot wildlife viewing opportunities on the otherwise inaccessible Antarctic coastline. Evenings after dinner, an Expedition Leader helps guests digest what they’ve seen and discusses the excitement ahead. Each trip aboard Ushuaia plans to visit at least one of the scientific stations to get an inside look into the research taking place in Antarctica. Classic Antarctica is an 11-day expedition cruise to the Antarctic Peninsula and the South Shetland Islands. The per-person double rate is from $5,500. Departures are from mid-November 2015 through early April 2016.
Sea Explorer
The 112-passenger, 297-foot Sea Explorer is a small luxury expedition ship offering sea kayaking and trekking expeditions on Antarctic Peninsula Aboard Sea Explorer, a 12-day Antarctic Peninsula expedition. The per-person double rate is from $6,795. Departures are November into February. Before embarkation, the Expedition Team meets guests in Ushuaia, home of Argentinean leather markets and succulent lamb dishes that make Patagonia famous. Falklands, South Georgia & Antarctica Aboard Sea Explorer is a 20-day expedition from $11,595 per person double. There are two departures: Oct. 29, 2015 and Jan. 30, 2016.
Sea Spirit
This 197-foot luxury ship offers all suites for 116 guests. The Sea Spirit features the amenities of a fine hotel while travelling through and experiencing Antarctica in grand style. Last Discovered Continent is a classic Antarctica itinerary that boasts one of the best staff-to-passenger ratios in the business. This is a 12-day expedition with rates from $5,995 per person double. There are four departures between mid-December and mid-January. Audience with "Kings", also on Sea Spirit, is 21 days from $10,995 per person double. King penguins are one of the highlights of this itinerary.
Hebridean Sky
For the 2016-2017 season, Sea Explorer is being refurbished and rechristened as the 114-guest Hebridean Skyand will follow the same itinerary as Sea Explorer. The refurbished cruise ships will offer all-suite, 220-square-foot cabins. Reservations for October 2016 and into 2017 are available for the itinerary Falklands, South Georgia & Antarctica Aboard Sea Explorer (in October 2016 rechristened the Hebridean Sky). The rates for this 20-day voyage are from $13,995 per person double.
In addition to the new small ships, routes and itineraries, AdventureSmith has reissued its in-depth Antarctica Cruise Guide to help travelers decide what kind of polar experience and style of ship to book. Receive an Additional $250 per Person in Savings If Combined with Machu Picchu Land Tour
TAHOE CITY, CA, Sept. 3, 2015– Small ship cruise expert AdventureSmith Explorations http://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com offers a $250 per person savings on its most affordable Peruvian Amazon cruise plus an additional $250 off if combined with a Machu Picchu land tour.
The already value-driven nine-day Amatista Amazon Cruise from $2,499 per person, double, has been enhanced this year by lengthening the trip to nine days and offering more departures and a better streamlined experience. This longer, more in-depth itinerary spends more time in Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve and adds value with included flights and accommodation in Lima.
This cruise program can easily be combined with the five-day Machu Picchu Explorer from $1,395 per person, double, for additional savings. This dual $250-off promotion applies to any departure from Sept. 15, 2015, through July 31, 2016. Trips must be booked by Dec. 15, 2015.
Lima is the gathering place for both tours. Cruise-bound guests take a private transfer to Iquitos to a visit a nearby Amazonian Manatee Rescue Center before boarding the 30-guest Amatista in Nauta to explore the Amazon and some of its tributaries. An Amazon Reserve naturalist guide leads daily excursions by motorized skiff along the rainforest shore where, with luck, sloths, toucans and pink dolphins lurk.
Two days are spent in Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve, one of the last accessible tropical rainforest in the world. Some 200 bird and 10 primate species have been spotted here. Two thirds of the world’s plants and animal species make their home on the reserve’s 2.08 million hectares, representing 1.5 percent of Peru’s total land and its largest protected natural area. The vessel, built with traditional riverboat lines, offers the comforts of air conditioning and private bathrooms. Guests on one excursion dine with an Indian family and on another they ride in a dugout canoe. Before the cruise ends, guests pay a visit to the jungle town of Nauta where the Ucayali and the Marañon — the major headstreams of the Amazon — join together. A privately guided, independent land tour extension begins in Cusco where guests explore the Sacred Urubamba Valley including Pisac and Ollantaytambo before proceeding by rail to the citadel of Machu Picchu for a full-day guided tour here and an overnight at the famous Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Inn. This Peru tour can be customized to include other regions such as Lake Titicaca and the Inca Trail Trek. See: https://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com/machu-picchu-explorer

LAKE TAHOE, CA, June 24, 2015 – Small ship cruise expert AdventureSmith Explorations http://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com is launching a contest where one lucky person will win an Amazon Cruise for two.
Participants in the contest will enter to win a three-night Amazon Cruise that will journey along Peru’s upper Amazon rainforest: the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve. Guests fly to Iquitos, Peru, and are transferred from the airport to the embarkation port in Nauta, before entering the protected area where they will explore small villages, secluded rivers and lakes, and be greeted with an abundance of wildlife, all the while kayaking, fishing and hiking through the Amazon. The cruise itinerary will differ depending on the height of the water. High waters are typically prevalent November through May while low waters prevail from June through October.
The cruise takes place on the 28-passenger Delfin II, a small luxury riverboat that stands out because of her locally sourced architecture and construction. Guests are served fresh, local cuisine and can expect an upscale and luxurious cruise experience while surrounded by rugged jungle and wildlife.
AdventureSmith Explorations’Delfin II Amazon River Cruise (http://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com/delfin-ii-amazon-river-cruise) departs weekly throughout the year. The per person double rate in 2015 is from $2,950. This includes accommodation, meals, guides and land excursions.
Entrants must submit a creative travel journal of a past cruise they have taken with AdventureSmith Explorations. The journal should be a minimum of 500 words and include at least 10 photos that were taken on their trip. Applications are being accepted until Jan. 31, 2016. Contestants can view previous travel journals for inspiration of how to compose a journal worthy of a win. Last year’s winning travel journal about a cruise in Alaska was written by AdventureSmith guest Marjorie Kirsch. Her journal won her a free cruise to the Galapagos Islands.
From now until the January 31, 2016 deadline contestants may submit applications on line to: www.adventuresmithexplorations.com/travel-journal.
The contest will be judged by Todd Smith, the Founder and Director of AdventureSmith Explorations; Audrey Vaughan, Contest Manager, Dave Wiggins, AdventureSmith Exploration’s Media Director; and Ines Orihuela of Delfin Amazon Cruises.

Itinerary Maximizes Opportunities for People-to-People Interactions From Various Ports of Call along Cuban Coast
TAHOE CITY, CA, April 30, 2015– Small ship cruise expert AdventureSmith Explorations http://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com is venturing into new waters. The company has engaged a three-masted schooner, Panorama, to cruise the Caribbean carrying American travelers who for the first time in over 50 years can now visit the island nation of Cuba and meet its people.
Launching in December 2015 and scheduled into April 2016 will be a series of eight-day adventures called the Cuba People to People Cruise aboard a recently refurbished 49-passenger sailing vessel. The program begins and ends in Miami with round trip flights to Havana included in the fare. The ship stops in five ports along Cuba’s western and southern shore.
The per person, double cabin rate is from $4,999. Guests use the ship as a floating hotel as they enjoy daily shore excursions. Included in the rate are round-trip air fare from Miami, all meals from arrival in Cuba to breakfast on departure day, cabin accommodations, Cuban visa, mandatory Cuban medical insurance and transportation. The Cuba People to People cruise has obtained all the required licenses for American citizens traveling from the US, which are included in the price of the trip.
“A strategic advantage AdventureSmith Explorations brings to the excitement of a newly engaged Cuba is the fact that we are traveling only in small ships. This offers the flexibility and access to enter ports along Cuba’s coast that may not yet be available to larger vessels,” said Todd Smith, founder/owner. The itinerary includes stops in Havana, Maria LaGorda, Cayo Largo, Trinidad and Cienfuego. Most of the sailing occurs at night as guests sleep. Come morning, the ship is in a new harbor where guests on escorted tours discover this island and meet its people.
“A socialist republic since the 1959 revolution when Fidel Castro seized power, Cuba was once the last stronghold of Spanish power in the region. Now one of the last remaining vestiges of state socialism, Cuba offers authentic interactions with real people in one of the most isolated places in the world,” Smith added.
The program’s goal is to help facilitate an unscripted, honest exchange between people of two nations whose leaders for the past 50 years were at odds with one another. Guests will be introduced to Cuba’s rich artistic heritage: pre-Columbian cultures, the splendors of Spanish colonialism and internationally acclaimed contemporary art.
“This is a country of great natural beauty: magnificent mountain ranges and fertile plains of sugar cane and tobacco and some of the best beaches in the world,” Smith added.
Old Havana, harboring five percent of Cuba’s 11 million people, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and said to be the most beautiful city in the Caribbean. Here and throughout the week visitors will meet an easy-going, multi-racial population whose greatest enthusiasm is reserved for music. It is the home of the modern rumba, actually of African origin, the mamba, the cha-cha-cha and the salsa and Cuban jazz. While most meals are taken on the ship, local cuisines are enjoyed on scheduled stops at restaurants and paladors (in-home businesses).
Guests visit a community cooperative to hear about the challenges locals face while relying less on government and trying to generate income by being more entrepreneurial. Cultural exchanges include an evening with the Buena Vista Social Club and a visit with the Community Cultural Project of Quisicuaba that delves into the folk culture of the free blacks who came from the Angolan Basin in the 16th century. On a nature preserve guests relax on a beach and visit a beekeeping and honey production center. The National Park at Guanahacabibes reveals 140 archaeological sites. On Cayo Largo, a limestone island of mangroves and salt pans, guests move from discussions with Cuban sports, culture and mass communications experts and local doctors to a sea turtle breeding center and an afternoon of snorkeling. Trinidad is a meticulously well preserved Spanish colonial town known as the Pearl of the South with its cluster of Neoclassical structures.
The 178-foot Panorama, built in 1993, was renovated in 2009. She cruises at 11 knots and has performed several Atlantic Ocean crossings; she has also sailed from the Syechelles to Monte Carlo and from the Black Sea to Tunis. Aboard the ship guests can mingle in the outdoor areas or in the two lounges or library. An on-board pianist plays as guests relax over drinks. Off of a swimming platform guests can dip into the sea when weather and anchorage conditions permit.
AdventureSmith Explorations notes that travel to Cuba is still restricted for Americans and a special travel visa is required. Read their Cuba Cruise FAQ to learn more about how Americans can travel to Cuba and the included licenses aboard this Cuba cruise.

TAHOE CITY, CA, April 9, 2015– Todd Smith wears many hats. For starters, he’s a dad, and during the work week, he’s the visionary force and face behind AdventureSmith Explorations, the small ship cruise experts (http://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com/).
These two hats alone make him a compendium of knowledge when it comes to cruising with young families. Check out his full blog post and story on family travel in the Galapagos at: http://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com/galapagos-family-cruises-1
Following are his tips for nature-loving families who may be considering a trip-of-a-lifetime small ship cruise in the Galapagos Islands.
“Not all family cruises are the same,” said Smith. “Family-focused cruises create an environment for multi generations to interact with each other, young and old experiencing and enjoying life together on the ship and on-shore. These cruises usually are offered over school holidays and in the summer and most likely include other families with children similar in age.”
Are family-focused cruises parent and youth centric?
“Yes, and with great results,” Smith said. “Young and old alike will be clamoring for the latest reports from a youthful birder, or encouraging a teenager trying out his fledgling language skills on someone else’s grandfather who speaks only Spanish. As age boundaries disappear, enjoyment levels increase.”
Smith suggests these questions to ask when choosing a family-focused cruise:
AdventureSmith Explorations’ choices for top family-focus cruises in the Galapagos include:
Family-friendly cruises usually offer children’s menus and entertainment but aren’t as youth-centric as family-focused cruises. Smith’s recommendations for family-friendly cruises include those offered by National Geographic, “a perfect blend of activity and education with onboard experts.” The expedition leaders and naturalist staff aboard the 48 guest Islander and 96 guest Endeavour are tops in their field. This cruise is perfect for families willing to pay a premium for National Geographic leadership resulting in an intellectual and educational experience.
“On any cruise you select, remember that most of children today are wired in to their worlds at home. To help them disconnect and focus on where they are, photography and travel journals are ways they can record their experiences and collect material for show and tell and class work down the road. It is important to be sure each child has a camera,” said Smith.
Some clients prefer to travel just with their own family and friends. In these instances he suggests arranging a private family charter for a minimum of 12 and up to 100 people. The same professional level of staff and guide services are secured for charter cruises as are provided on departures open to the public.
