Austin Adventures Launches New Concierge Vacation Option for ‘The Independent Traveler in Us All’

BILLINGS, MT – April 23, 2019 – Travel trends drive travel experiences. Identifying a growing desire for maximum individualization and flexibility in vacations, veteran tour operator Austin Adventures has launched a new vacation option: a complete travel concierge service for those who want it “their way” — down to literally sitting in the driver’s seat if they’d like.

Austin Concierge is a brand new offering from the leader in global multi-sport adventures. Its target audience is the seasoned independent traveler who would like to vacation at his or her own pace, with his or her own friends and family.

“It’s your vacation, your way,” founder and president Dan Austin said. “You tell us what, when and where, and we put our 35+ years’ experience and extensive network of contacts to work for you to craft a tailor-made itinerary that you can simply go and enjoy.”

Austin Adventures is known for its small group tours and its ability to execute fully-guided custom trips as simple or imaginative as desired. Austin Concierge is one more way the company is seeking to make the most of their guests’ vacation time.

“We are proud of what we do — and nearly 99% of our alumni say they’d travel with us again — but we know that sometimes the packaged, all-inclusive, pre-set group tour isn’t quite what you’re looking for and a custom-built, fully-guided itinerary is not in the budget,” Austin said. “This is another option for the independent traveler in us all.”

Austin goes on to explain, “Savvy travelers want the perfect route with the best stops, the “just-right” accommodations and most unique dining, and the right mix of activity and relaxation — but with more flexibility and more time to do just the things they want to do. And if they’re totally honest, some would like to take the keys and drive, too!”

Here is how the new Austin Concierge travel service works:

  • By phone, email, or web form, you contact Austin Adventures and request a personalized itinerary just for you;
  • Dan or Carol Austin will schedule a complimentary 30-minute call with you to determine if Austin Concierge is the best fit for you;
  • If it’s deemed the perfect fit, you will work with one of the company’s most veteran trip developers to create a perfect itinerary;
  • A $500 trip development deposit (applied to the final cost) is made;
  • You communicate what, when, and where you want to go and what special things you’d like to do on vacation. Experts then put their 35+ years of trip building experience and network of connections to work for you;
  • They plan the route, book the lodging, recommend the restaurants, arrange the activities, and hire any private guides needed;
  • You have the ability to adjust the itinerary two times (without additional cost) during the planning process;
  • Once the tailor-made itinerary is perfected, and depending on how soon it is to departure, a final deposit or full payment is made;
  • Your itinerary is then handed off to you with all the detailed logistics and support materials. You depart on the set date and enjoy your finely-crafted itinerary. Austin Adventures is a phone call away for any needed support during your trip.

Vacations exploring the National Parks of the West are a signature specialty of Austin Adventures, but this new concierge service is not limited to just the US. The company prides itself on offering programs on all seven continents. See the newly enhanced and improved website and Austin Adventures Home Page for a list of all the destinations served.

Travel Agents are also welcomed and encouraged to book their clients on Austin Concierge self-guided tours with Austin Adventures. Net prices will be quoted with room for agent adjustments.

Austin Adventures’ Guests to Share Spectacle of Havana’s 500th Birthday in November 2019

Celebratory Trip Co-Hosted by Kasey Austin Marks the Company’s Return to the Once Forbidden Isle of Cuba

  BILLINGS, MT – April 11, 2019 – Austin Adventures has a knack for observing significant events such as a solar eclipse or the birthday of our national parks. However, one upcoming celebration marks a major New World milestone, the 500th anniversary of the founding of Havana, Cuba. There will be dancing, parades, music and food and this company and a handful of fortunate guests plan to experience it all.

“This is going to be a major party, and I’m already on board,” said Kasey Austin Morrissey, vice president of operations and co-host of this special trip. An award-winning guide herself, Kasey is the daughter of Dan Austin, company founder and president.

Ongoing restorations of Old Havana and early preparations are now focusing on the historic anniversary date of Nov. 16, 2019. The trip itinerary will bring guests into Havana on Nov. 15 and 16 to join the festivities.

The per person double rate for the eight-day, Nov. 10-17, 2019, Cuba - Havana’s 500th Anniversary Adventure is $5,398 ($1,180 single supplement). For complete information see: https://www.austinadventures.com/packages/cuba-havana-500th-anniversary/

“After a short hiatus away and now under a new government permit, we are confident we can once again offer Cuba in a way we feel it needs to be done,” explains Dan Austin. “Creating a trip to celebrate Havana’s birthday was the logical way to kick-off our new trip series. Afterall, something like this comes around, well, every 500 years or so!”

Rates in 2020 for eight-day departures of Cuba - Trinidad to Havana (the same itinerary but without the 500th anniversary celebrations) are $4,898 ($980 single supplement). Departures in 2020 are scheduled for Jan. 26-Feb. 2; Feb. 23-March 1; and March 22-29.

Cuba was a popular destination for Americans until the 1959 Revolution changed it all. Since then a fascinating history has unfolded and today, the door has been opened again for Americans to visit. The incredible natural beauty of Cuba extends beyond its beaches, and its sweeping swamplands and crenellated mountains are known for rare wildlife and insurrectionist folklore. Today’s guests may stroll city streets where opulent mansions peer out between suburban city planning. They explore the countryside where dilapidated plantations look out on still-thriving tobacco farms.

Austin Adventures was one of the first travel companies to offer culturally active trips to Cuba (in 2012) under a people-to-people exchange program. Cuba had just begun to sort itself out touristically after travel embargoes were lifted. As a result, operation of a dependable, high quality itinerary was at times a challenge.

Austin Adventures took a hiatus until now, securing aspecial license from the U.S. Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control related to economic and trade sanctions. This new license now assures meaningful interactions with Cuban individuals who have created privately owned businesses. For the November 2019 departure and scheduled departures in 2020, guests will lodge in private Cuban residences(casas particulares) and dine at privately owned Cuban restaurants (paladares) -- all run by self-employed Cubans (cuentapropistas).

“We can truly support the Cuban people with the itinerary we’ve created and the connections we have in-country,” Austin assured. The itinerary mixes up classic activities such as riding in vintage automobiles and visiting a cigar factory with experiences only available through Austin Adventures. These include, among others,

  • Horseback riding through Valle de los Ingenios near Trinidad to learn about the history of sugar production through the eyes of a local,
  • Listening to an award-winning Cuban guitarist during a private concert,
  • Touring a museum full of paintings that were seized during that nationalization of Cuba following the 1959 revolution,
  • Learning the secrets to making the island’s most famous blends from a professional barman during a pre-dinner cocktail class.

The program begins after transferring to Trinidad, Cuba, from Santa Clara’s international airport. Trinidad, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was once the center of the world’s sugar production. Here Cuba’s colonial past comes to life on horseback or by creating traditional Trinitario pottery. One day explores the life of a coffee grower in a region where coffee beans fetch $25 a pound. Guests can indulge in birding, guided walks and water activities in this country that shields more than 20 percent of its open lands in national preserves. Enroute to Havana is Playa Giron, home of the Bay of Pigs Museum. This US-led invasion is often thought to be the galvanizing force behind Fidel Castro’s longevity as Cuba’s leader.

For centuries once-prosperous Havana was a coveted jewel by the British, Spanish and Americans. Its larger-than-life Colonial buildings speak to the days of empires created from the sugar trade. Here guests bike through the less visited Centro Habana neighborhood with stops along the route to learn how the average Cuban lives and works in this often misunderstood country. Nightlife, music and dance thrive in Cuba where artistic expression has traditionally been its people’s passion.

For the second year in a row, Austin Adventures is dedicating the entire month of March to “Family Appreciation,” with special incentives and giveaways, plus an interactive child & parent “Take a National Park Vacation” webinar that all ages will want to attend.

“Between work, school, athletic and social schedules, planning and scheduling a family vacation has never been more challenging, often to the point of missing the opportunity all together to create lasting bonds and memories within the family,” explains Dan Austin, company president and founder. “Austin Adventures is fully committed to helping anyway we can. Our goal is to take the stress out of vacation planning and then deliver an experience second-to-none.”

On Tuesday, Mar 12, 2019 at 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM EDT Austin Adventures invites kids and parents to a live webinar focused on helping families (especially the kids) with their vacation planning. Anyone considering a small group vacation tour now or in the future is encouraged to attend. For information and to register click here.

The seminar will be hosted by Kasey Austin, Outside Magazine 2014 Family Guide of the Year. Making a cameo appearance will be Dan Austin, company visionary and travel industry legend. Together, The Austin Family has set the bar for family adventure travel for decades, so much so, they are often referred to as “the First Family of Adventure Travel”.

During this informal and informative webinar focused on the younger generation, Kasey will offer tips and insights on planning and visiting America’s National Parks along with other popular family destinations.

As an incentive to register and attend, every family that participates will receive a coupon worth $250 off their next Austin Adventures family vacation. Plus, all participating kids (age 6-12) whose parents end up booking a 2019 family national park adventure will receive a logo-embossed backpack (on Day 1 of the trip) packed full of swag (logo water bottle, trip journal, field guide, hacky sack, stickers and more).

“I had so much fun sharing my passion for our National Parks last year, I couldn’t wait to do it all again this year. Sharing the parks with the next generation of adventurer really is my passion. I am looking forward to sharing what we know and have learned from our 35+ years of taking families deep into our national parks,” said Kasey Austin.

“Dan and I will draw from our own experiences and help families with real time information that can assist them in making the most of a park vacation, whether with us or on their own. There will be a follow-up email survey as well as ample time for questions and answers.”

The webinar will help Austin Adventures kick-off their second annual “Family Appreciation” Month. Austin Adventures Goes Island-Hopping to Explore Vestigial Volcanoes in Verdant Azores Archipelago

BILLINGS, MT, Feb. 19, 2019 – An innovative offering from Austin Adventures invites guests to take a deep dip into one of adventure travel’s newest destinations, the Azores. Here, where warm salt air surrounds exotic foliage and vineyards that thrive in volcanic soils, guests will spend a night on a volcano summit with stars sprinkled above sparkling islands below; contemplate Nature’s power inside a crater lagoon; enjoy a private soak in naturally iron-rich hot springs; and sip local wines while cozido (stew) bubbles in a volcanic oven.

Austin Adventures is betting that its clients will thrive here while hiking, kayaking, paddle boarding, biking and swimming in the mellow, ambient climate of Portugal’s Azores.

Portugal: Active Azores is a new-for-2019, nine-day exploration of the nine-island archipelago in the mid-Atlantic, just four hours by plane from North America and two hours from Europe. Confirmed departure dates in 2019 are May 11-May 19 and Sept. 7-Sept. 15. The per person double rate is from $4,298 ($980 single supplement). See: www.austinadventures.com/packages/portugal-active-azores/.

“An authentic destination like the Azores is a rare bird in today’s world of sometimes-overvisited destinations,” says company founder and president Dan Austin. “We like the fact that direct flights make this destination easy to access and that we can move easily from island to island in search of the best experiences.”

“Today safety is a consideration,” adds Austin. “Our research affirms that this is one of the most secure places in the world to travel. Luxuries abound in hotels and restaurants and a rhythm of life balances work, pleasure and traditions. Recent investment made in the archipelago’s tourism infrastructure finally allows this gem to grow sustainably and position itself among the top European destinations in terms of active adventure.”

In the 15th century people fleeing the Portuguese (Spanish) inquisition began settling these islands that today are protected (as is Madeira) by Portugal. The accommodations selected for this itinerary help to tell the archipelago’s cultural and botanical history:

  • Pousada Forte da Horta is a 16th century fort and a National Monument.
  • Hotel do Colégio in the historical center of the capital city, Ponta Delgada, exemplifies 19th century Azorean architecture. This style evolved from the riches that came with the golden age of the orange trade with England. The building was once a manor house, then a private school and the first address of Ponta Delgada's Music Conservatory.
  • Cantinho das Buganvílias Resort, just 200 meters from the sea, offers guests a fantastic view of Pico and Faial Islands and an immersion with nature.
  • Terra Nostra Garden Hotel is often considered to be the best hotel in the Azores, having won many international accolades. Located in Furnas Valley, it is nestled in one of the world’s finest “Green Retreats,” as deemed by Condé Nast Traveler. The hotel’s Art Deco interior also introduces contemporary elements and materials, integrating it with their lush Terra Nostra Garden.
  • Casa da Montanha Camp offers 360-degree views of up to five Azorean islands (weather permitting), cool breezes, and an opportunity to ‘digitally detox’ (no Wi-Fi or cell coverage).

This region owes its verdant nature to minerals spewed by one-time active volcanoes. Craters formed by erupting mountains are lake-filled visions of blue and green. Oceanic pools heated by volcanic vents and natural thermal pools embrace swimmers.

A richly populated and diverse array of marine wildlife thrives here. Think up to 25 cetacean species along with turtles, seabirds and other marine life. A biologist shares information with guests who later engage in a whale and dolphin watching excursion to spot, among others, sperm whales and common and bottlenose dolphins.

Tales of whales and sailors are shared by locals along the way, including over lunch at a typical house, and by guides who point out the salt water lagoon where clams thrive and the area where surfers rock what are considered some of the longest wave breaks in Europe.

Wines and cheeses mingle on visits to vineyards and cheese factories. On one stop at Caldeiras da Lagoa das Furnas (Furnas Lake Calderas), guests themselves prepare ingredients purchased earlier at a local market and place cooking pots of cozido das Furnas underground for six hours to simmer in geothermal heat.

The native-born, English-speaking guides who reveal the Azores to their guests are Maria Inês Pavão and Paulo Medeiros.Maria holds a degree in Marine Biology and a Master in Biotechnology and Plant Biodiversity from the University of the Azores in Ponta Delgada. She works as a guide on both land tours and out on the ocean. Her passion is conservation. Paulo has completed studies in tourism at a local college. He enjoys showing the charms of the islands by jeep, on foot and by bicycle.

Austin Adventures Announces A Special October Trip Hosted by Dan & Carol Austin – Swimming with the Whale Sharks of Bahia de los Angeles

BILLINGS, MT – Feb 5, 2019 – Every fall, whale sharks make their annual return to the warm, nutrient-rich waters of Mexico’s Bahia de los Angeles in Baja’s Sea of Cortez. Observing and snorkeling with these gentle 25 to 40-foot behemoths can be a life-changing experience. So, it’s no wonder that Austin Adventures’ chose such an encounter to be the next major “Wow” in their ever-expanding line-up of extraordinary adventures.

Sharing the wonders of this active six-day vacation departing Oct. 28, 2019, will be Dan Austin, founder and president of Montana-based Austin Adventures, and his partner in business and life, Carol Austin.

“How cool is it to jump from your Panga and snorkel alongside a polka-dotted giant?” muses Austin. “And after we’ve had our fill, to then return to a private beach resort where cold beverages and a chef-cooked dinner await! Carol and I can’t wait to share this experience with our wonderful alumni and new guests.”

Like clockwork each year from August into late fall, Whale Sharks migrate to the nutrient-rich watersof Baja’s Bahia de los Angeles. Not a whale and only technically a shark, this is the world’s largest fish. These gentle giantscan grow up to 60feet long on a diet of algae, plankton, and krill. There are only a handful of places on the planet where they make predictable appearances and luckily for North Americans, one of the best is just over two hours south by air from San Diego, CA. Novelist John Steinbeck once the dubbed the Sea of Cortez the “Galapagos of Mexico” thanks to a high concentration of whales and rare seabirds.  The area is home to 900 varieties of fish and 2,000 species of marine invertebrates, making it the richest body of water on the planet.

Las Animas Eco-Lodge is where guests will relax for five nights. The operator maintains a private fleet of modern aircraft to fly guests from San Diego, CA, to the sleepy fishing village of Bahia de los Angeles (population 900). After the two-hour flight, boats shuttle guests another hour south to the resort situated on a private mile-long crescent of white sand beach overlooking cavorting rays, sea lions and dolphins.

Accommodations are well-appointed beachside yurts housing just a dozen visitors weekly. The yurts are appointed with in-room solar shower and composting toilet, twin and king-size beds with comforters and high thread-count linens, and covered patios with hammocks. A centrally located, open-sided palapa offers a spacious covered deck with tables, couches and chairs. Located here are the kitchen, central dining area, cantina bar, communal lounge and game area featuring a satellite system with fairly dependable Internetand phone connection.

The all-inclusive rate for this special President’s Trip is $2,995 per person, double occupancy for a six-day/five-night escape. The price includes deluxe yurt accommodations, roundtrip charter flights from San Diego, naturalist guided outings, daily snorkeling with whale sharks (weather permitting), panga shuttles and transportation, healthy homemade meals, complimentary beverages (including beer and margaritas) and optional free activities such as kayaking, beach snorkeling, whale watching, swimming, fishing, sailing and hiking.

In Gratitude to Travel Professionals, Austin Adventures Names February ‘Travel Agent Appreciation Month’

BILLINGS, MT, Jan. 24, 2019 – For the second consecutive year, Austin Adventures is dedicating the entire month of February to acknowledging and rewarding the Professional Travel Community for their role in promoting and selling adventure travel. Rewards during the month include raising the standard agent commission to 15% for all reservations.

Throughout the month, Austin Adventures (https://www.austinadventures.com/) has scheduled a variety of programs specifically for the travel trade.  Events and recognitions include an informative webinar along with month-long and weekly booking rewards and incentives.

“One of the reasons that we can enjoy and maintain our position as a leader in the world of active multisport and family adventure travel is the relationship we have with our travel agent partners. Today’s counselor is hip and knowledgeable about the marketplace and in tune with their clients’ most passionate travel desires,” said Dan Austin, founder and President. “We’ve learned over the years that a good travel agent is worth their weight in gold. Our goal is to make each agent we work with, a hero to their customers -- and our lifelong partner.”

Austin speaks from a long history of his company’s success working with travel agents. In 2014, the company was invited to join the Virtuoso Network as a Preferred Tour Operator and Partner. In 2018 Austin Adventures saw their travel agent-sourced bookings double over the previous year. They are already on pace in 2019 to exceed last year’s travel agent-sourced business. More and more agents have found Austin Adventures to be a trusted resource for top quality and high value scheduled, custom, and bespoke adventures.

When asked why travel agents have embraced Austin Adventures as a top source for active custom and small group travel, Austin points to these factors:

  • His company is expert at obtaining hard-to-get national park lodging at peak times with prime accommodations built into their tour itineraries;
  • They are a recognized leader in offering creative custom and private itineraries for clients; “If you can dream it, Austin Adventures can build it”;
  • Behind-the-scenes VIP access they enjoy thanks to the deep relationships the company has established with suppliers and partners;
  • Regularly acknowledged by the media, Austin Adventures sets the highest standards when it comes to top quality family itineraries and national park vacations;

  • They have been engaging satisfied guests for 40 years and are a two-time winner of Travel + Leisure’s World’s Best Award for Adventure Tour Operators in 2009 and again in 2012.

Month-long Rewards

Throughout February, Austin Adventures will increase agent commissions to an industry-high 15%. Additional travel agent rewards, bonuses and incentives include:

“Today’s marketplace dominated by the Internet has increased access to travel information but in turn has made the personal, living and breathing expert more important than ever,” points out Austin. “Agents have access, resources, connections and knowledge that would take the average traveler a lifetime to build. We love the role the travel agent fills for countless reasons.” Austin points to their top reasons;

  • Travel agents help tell Austin Adventures’ unique story to passionate travelers;

Veteran Tour Operator Advises that Government Shutdown Should Not Halt Vacation Plans

Having Experienced Similar National Park Closures in the Past Austin Adventures Has Alternatives When Plan A is No Longer an Option

BILLINGS, MT – Jan. 17, 2019 – An experienced tour operator expects and prepares for the unexpected. A nimble tour company embraces the unexpected and sees opportunity in alternative planning.

As America’s government shutdown continues to set a record for longevity, Austin Adventures has seen a rise in consumer anxiety during a time many travelers are usually looking to book their spring and summer vacations. Since national parks are a primary focus for the company it is understandable that people are nervous and even holding off on making their vacation plans.

“First and foremost, this latest government shutdown should NOT shut down your vacation plans,” says Dan Austin, founder and director of Montana-based Austin Adventures (https://www.austinadventures.com/). “Talking with both alumni travelers and prospective clients on the phone my first advice is to not panic and worry. We’ve seen this before and all will be OK.”

Austin points to a previous 17-day government shutdown in the fall of 2013. “Our itinerary had us visiting Bryce Canyon National Park but it was closed. Unknown to the guests, we had a contingency plan in place to instead visit and explore nearby Kodachrome Basin State Park, an equally awesome geological wonder 20 miles to the east. Many guests said that it was the unexpected highlight of their trip,” explains Austin.

Many of the company’s adventures in and around National Parks of the West take place during the spring, summer and fall. While these trips—other than nervousness in the marketplace—have not been directly impacted by the shutdown, Austin believes that the likelihood of the political impasse dragging on into their spring season is unlikely. However, if need be, they are ready to react should the situation warrant it.

This government shutdown has been a bit different than those in the past. According to the National Parks Conservation Association, “The Department of the Interior directed its staff, including National Park Service staff, to keep national parks as accessible as possible while still obeying the law. This means that approximately a third of our national park sites are completely closed, including places like presidential homes, museums and cultural sites with buildings that can be locked. Gates at many other park sites remain open, but few if any staff are on hand to protect visitors and park resources, and many visitor centers and restrooms remained locked and roads are closed due to weather.”

Austin points out that many parks remain partially open. While this may be good for the public and the gateway communities that rely on park visitors for their livelihood, it also poses certain risks such as the unlawful use of park resources like off-limits camping, harassment of wildlife, off-road driving, trash and vandalism.

“This is where national park travel with a professional tour company can be the best alternative,” points out Austin. “Our veteran guides are naturalists who don’t pass a chewing gum wrapper without picking it up. If a trailhead is closed due to fire damage or aggressive wildlife sightings, we have another option in place. I feel confident that if we are faced with such partial park closures in the future, our groups will adhere to the highest code of back country ethics with our guides sharing and setting positive examples for all.”

“We remain confident the shutdown will end soon, and the parks will get back to their mission established with our first National Park back in 1872: ‘For the enjoyment and betterment of the people’,” Austin said. “Without getting political, the current situation is unfortunate and unnecessary. The only people it is hurting right now are the government employees furloughed and the small businesses in and around our National Parks. But it has also got the public worried about how it might affect their vacation plans.”

The fact remains, suggests Austin, that booking a National Park vacation now may be a great way to put the unrest of our country out of mind. It is more positive to anticipate breathtaking views, stronger family bonds, and invigorating adventure instead.

Lemons really can be made into lemonade. An enthusiastic travel partner of the positive lifestyle brand, Life is Good, Austin Adventures is committed to living out their 10 Super Powers. In the case of dealing with a government shutdown, creativity, openness, humor and optimism have come in handy.

For the sake of the communities, businesses and furloughed National Park Service employees that contribute greatly to the ethos of national parks in the West, Austin Adventures hopes for a swift resolution to this most recent government shutdown.

But in the meantime, the company is open for business and ready to help travelers explore some of America’s most precious parcels of public land.

Austin Adventures Invites Women Only on Three Multisport Vacations in 2019

BILLINGS, MT – Jan. 14, 2019 – The active tour company that pioneered multisport and family adventure travel announces two domestic and one international itinerary designed by women, led by women and for women only.

Steering this effort is Austin Adventures’ own second generation of family leadership, Kasey Austin, Vice President of Operations and the daughter of Dan Austin, Founder and President. Under Kasey’s direction and influence the company now boasts a professional team of tour guides that numbers in excess of 60 percent women.

“These leaders are super women with adventurous souls and the power to inspire,” Kasey says. “I think by trip’s end, you just might want to pack them up in your suitcase and take them home with you!”

Kasey is the inspiration behind the 2018 addition of women-only trips to Austin Adventures’ ever-expanding, trail-blazing vacation portfolio. Having women guides who do it all — serve as naturalists, drivers, companions, mechanics, chefs, storytellers, logistical gurus and confidantes — is one of the key ways Austin Adventures motivates the women who join them for these unique trips to tap into their own strength and courage.

After last year’s successful introduction of women-only trips, Kasey added three new destinations this year sure to enable ladies to “get their adventure on” with other strong, inspiring women who like to travel, explore and see the world.

“We want to get away from the idea that vacations for women should be spent at the spa,” Kasey explains. “The idea behind these trips is that we want to challenge our ladies by day and treat them like queens with a hot shower, delicious meal and, of course, a glass of wine (or two), by night.”

New for 2019 will be three distinct itineraries. Two take place in America’s coveted National Parks and one explores the Loire Valley of France.

France: Multi-Sport in the Loire Valley is aseven-day cycling and hiking vacation that quickly departs the hustle and bustle of Paris for the beauty of the Loire Valley. Each day mixes and matches châteaux straight out of fairytales with a gastronomy served up in villages surrounded by vineyards. Participants will float down La Loire, chat En française with farmers at local markets, and savor history embellished by Joan of Arc, the Medicis and Leonardo da Vinci.

The per person double rate for this May 26-June 1, 2019, departure is from $3,598 ($580 single supplement). Two other 2019 departures are open to everyone, male and female, young and old. These are July 28-Aug. 3 and Sept. 22-28. For details see: https://www.austinadventures.com/packages/france-loire-valley/.

When it comes to active travel in the National Parks, Kasey adds: “I am the biggest advocate for girls ‘getting after it’ and proving they can do anything the boys can do when it comes to adventure. Last summer we found that the trip’s activities – hiking, biking, kayaking, zip lining and horseback riding – created deep connections between all the girls and left them feeling empowered, reenergized and invigorated.”

Wyoming/Montana: Tetons, Yellowstone & Glacier Adventure revealssecrets of three of America’s most stunning National Parks, all in the Northern Rockies. Over eight days women (only) explore the most geologically diverse region on the continent, taking on the challenges of Class III rapids on the Snake River by raft, trekking along the edge of the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone, zip lining over the Gallatin River along limestone cliffs and keeping an eye out for mountain goats along the Highline Trail in Glacier. The itinerary begins in Jackson, WY, and ends in Whitefish, MT.

The per person double rate for this July 24-31, 2019, departure is from $3,998 (single supplement $780). An additional 2019 departure of this itinerary, open to all, is July 14-21. For more information see: https://www.austinadventures.com/packages/montana-wyoming-rockies-adventure/

Yellowstone National Park is a six-day trek deep into the majesty of the country’s first National Park, an adventure for the senses filled with hiking unpopulated backcountry trails, peering into geysers from the vantage point of boardwalks and reveling in the beauty of high-altitude wilderness lakes. Yellowstone’s fascinating geothermal features, abundant wildlife and jaw-dropping scenery will serve as the perfect backdrop for a ladies-only getaway.

The per person double rate for this Sept. 8-13, 2019, departure is from $2,898 ($580 single supplement). Additional 2019 departures of this itinerary, open to all, are Aug 25-30 and Sep 1-6. For more information see: https://www.austinadventures.com/packages/yellowstone-national-park-vacations/

All itineraries provide, among other amenities, double occupancy rooms with private baths, all breakfasts, most lunches and dinners, the services of an all-female crew of guides, expert local partners, vehicle support and land transportation during the trip, Austin Adventures T-shirt and luggage tags, and pre-departure and packing information. Selected accommodations reflect the spirit, landscape and culture explored on each itinerary.

Austin Adventures Expands Grand Canyon Itineraries, Offers Special Perks to Honor National Park Service Grand Canyon Centennial

BILLINGS, MT, Nov. 27, 2018 – After six million years the Grand Canyon and its liquid heartbeat, the Colorado River, have more than a few stories to tell. But it was the National Park Service one century ago that began registering and interpreting these stories for some six million domestic and international visitors annually.

And one leading active travel company that frequents the cream of America’s iconic parks of the West, Austin Adventures, will invite guests to “Go Grand” with them, offering perks and special surprises on all of their Grand Canyon tour departures in 2019.

“There is no question as to why the Grand Canyon is considered one of the Seven Wonders of the natural world. A must-see on everyone’s bucket list, we at Austin Adventures have been sharing the “big ditch” with adventure seekers for over two decades,” adds Dan Austin, company founder and president. “You really need to do more than just view it from an overlook, you must journey inside and experience it to really understand its magnitude and magnificence!”

In 2019 there will be nine departures of Austin Adventures’ Arizona: Grand Canyon National Park Vacation (up from seven in 2018). Of these, seven trip dates are family-focused and two are for adults-only.  Six-day family departures are March 17, 24; June 30; July 7, 14, 21, 28. A Digital Detox Vacation? Austin Adventures Offers a New Tour Free from Phones, Computers and the Media

BILLINGS, MT, Nov. 13, 2018 – Do we suffer from an addiction to smartphones and digital devices? The collective answer is “YES!” And statistics back it up. Ninety percent of all adults in America own a cell phone. In 2017, the average American adult spent approximately 2 hours and 51 minutes on their smartphone every single day. That’s 36 percent more time than what is spent eating and drinking.

What would happen if we took a week’s hiatus from our phones and devices and let nature and recreation fill the void? One leading adventure travel company aims to find out.

This summer, with the mountains, rivers and trails of Montana and Yellowstone National Park providing the inspiration, Austin Adventures will ask their guests to relinquish their digital devices, turn away from the news and embrace the natural, technology-free world. For six ring, buzz and beep-free days, brave souls willing to sign and adhere to a Digital Detox Pledge will enjoy uninterrupted conversation, periods of true silence, healthy exercise and the opportunity for real family bonding. See: https://www.austinadventures.com/tour-packages/the-most-needed-trip-of-2019-digital-detoxification/

Why now and what makes this so important? Austin Adventures guides have personally witnessed the transformation that can take place when adults and kids head out on a hike where cell and Internet coverage doesn’t exist. Immediately they begin talking and sharing. Parents feel a reconnection with their kids that they haven’t felt in some time. With 52 percent of adults agreeing they suffer from smartphone addiction and 57 percent believing their use over time will increase, the company felt it was time to act.

Austin Adventures’ Montana - Big Sky, Yellowstone & Paradise Valley tour will offer two dates in 2019; July 7-12 (family focused) and Sept. 1-6 (for adults only) designed to help guests detoxify from the digital world. Noting that the average person checks his or her phone more than 110 times per day and a majority of Americans (84 percent) think smartphone addiction does exist, it won’t be any easy task.

“Knowing how addictive our digital devices can be, we may be setting ourselves up for failure, but all of us feel compelled to try,” says Dan Austin, founder and president of Austin Adventures. “I read that 61 percent of users say they could not go on vacation for a week without use of their smartphone. I think with a little help, a dose of empathy and some gentle guidance, we may be able to help people kick their habit for a week and perhaps even longer!”

First step will be to field questions and concerns from prospective participants and assure them that advance planning will be done and procedures put in place to assist them in their detox journey. Next will be the signing of a Digital Detox Pledge to embrace a full week away from normal digital and media surfing habits…

Guests will be asked to agree to refrain from:

  • Any and all use of a cell phone, tablet, laptop or other electronic devices (emergencies are an obvious exception; specially trained guides will be available for contact at all times of cell coverage and there will be an emergency number to give to family/friends back home)
  • Discussing daily issues including:
  1. Politics & World Affairs
  2. Work
  3. Religion
  4. The Economy
  5. Immigration or Healthcare
  • Investing any time in media and news (even in hotel rooms), including:
  1. Newspapers
  2. TV
  3. Radio
  4. Social Media

Instead, guests will be asked to invest their time, energy and focus in the enjoyment of friends, family and new acquaintances and to practice being present, living in the moment, exercising gratitude and working hard at truly de-stressing from daily life.

“Not having your smartphone or iPad for photos or as a connection to social media might be the biggest points of resistance, but we’ve figured that out,” says Austin. A professional trip photographer will respectfully roam the background snapping candid (and requested) images to be shared with participants after the trip via a USB flash drive. And throughout the week, guides will take over the Austin Adventures Facebook page with daily posts and images from the trip. Guests will be encouraged to have friends and family back home log-on to follow the fun.

At check-in guests will be asked to deposit their devices in a mobile safe, only accessed in the case of an emergency. Each morning guests will wake to fresh coffee and muffins delivered to their door with a soft knock replacing the alarm clock. Evening campfires, smores, stories and music will supplant the need for Netflix movies. Televisions and radios will be removed from guest lodgings to stem any temptation. And guests will be encouraged to do “gratitude journaling” at the end of each day, to be shared with the group the next morning.

The company hopes that for couples wanting to deeply reconnect and families in need of bonding and shared experiences, this “detox experiment” might become a popular annual offering.
