Brief History

Freewheel Holidays was established in 1999 as an independent tour operator specializing in cycling holidays in continental Europe. The business was run by Barbara Cray and John Lightwood until 2007. It was then transferred to the ownership of Sunliving Travel Ltd with directors Tony Moy and Paul Cresswell at the helm until October 2015. Freewheel Holidays is now owned by Sports Tours International Ltd, in Manchester, U.K and is a sister brand of Whereabouts Holidays.

Meet the Team

When you book a cycling holiday with Freewheel Holidays, you will probably speak to either Simon Rutherford or Steven Rittey. Both are cycling specialists and share a mutual love of leisure two-wheel travel.

Simon Rutherford - Cycling Holiday Specialist

Simon is an avid leisure cyclist who enjoys riding a wide variety of bikes around his favorite places in Lancashire. He also likes to venture further afield exploring new destinations with regular stop-offs to take photos and capture memories. One of his main passions is Italian culture and is currently learning the language between bedtime stories with his daughter. He loves a good espresso in a local cafe as well as a local ale if listening to one of his favorite vinyl albums at home. His most memorable cycling holiday was in Northern Italy, but he also enjoyed the superb cycling offered in Copenhagen and dreams that all cities could be that good for riding a bike.

Steven Rittey - Cycling Holiday Specialist

After working on Wheel2Wheel Holidays since its creation in 2012, Steven is a very knowledgeable pro in the leisure cycling industry and has advised thousands of customers on finding the very best cycling holidays in Europe. Ever since obtaining his first Young Person's Railcard aged 16, he has continued his love of travel beyond university and combined train travel with cycle touring in his twenties to tick off an impressive number of places visited throughout the UK and Europe. He lives in Greater Manchester and can often be seen riding around the city on his Brompton, Swifty Scooter or touring bike. His favorite place in Europe is Southern Germany with Switzerland and Finland following close behind. He also loves a classic English seaside town and bargain hunting!

Freewheel Holidays Customer Profile

The typical customer is adult, age 35+, well educated, in a managerial or professional career, keen to stay active and make the most out of life. Although perhaps not avid cyclists, their motivation for booking a holiday is more about enjoying the countryside, good food and wine, local culture, sightseeing and sharing the experience with friends. The health and fitness aspects of cycling are secondary benefits. The hallmarks of Freewheel Holidays are customer care and service, which sets this tour operator apart from others in the field.

FAQ’s

I don’t cycle regularly – how fit do I need to be?

All Freewheel Holidays can be enjoyed by anyone who is reasonably fit. Obviously some holidays involve greater distances or frequency of cycling and some will cover hillier terrain than others. Detailed tour gradings and itinerary descriptions should help guide participants towards the most suitable holiday options for them. If you haven’t cycled for a while, re-acquaint yourself with two wheels and it will better prepare you and add to the enjoyment of the holiday. Do let us know if you have any medical conditions we should be aware of, and check with your doctor if you have any concerns.

What else should I bring with me?

Daytime clothes for sightseeing and other activities on non-cycling days, casual evening clothes, a fleece, swimwear and swimming towels, sun creams and a sun hat. Please do not bring valuable items for transportation, and we ask that you limit your luggage to one medium-sized suitcase per person.

What do I wear for cycling?

Very much dependent on the season but the emphasis is on comfort. Padded cycling shorts, a zipped top, windproof light jacket and trainers are standard fare. In mid-summer you may just need shorts and a t-shirt. Dress in layers so you can add or remove clothing easily according to the conditions.

MANCHESTER, UK, July 19, 2018– A hefty clump of the summer of 2018 lingers on the horizon before autumn leaves start to fall. This means plenty of time still to bicycle in Europe this season.

When it comes to food, wine and beaches, Portugal is the in place to vacation this year, says Steven Rittey of Freewheel Holidays, specialists in self-guided, European biking vacations. Portugal was recently voted as Travel+ Leisure’s destination of the year.

Following are eight-day, self-guided itineraries that include accommodations (with breakfasts) reflecting regional culture and history, bike rentals, luggage transfers, airport transfers, detailed maps and route notes. Lisbon to the Algarve whisks visitors from the capital to Sesimbra where the bike route leads to limestone cliffs in the Nature Park of Arrábida looking out to the Troia Peninsula in the Atlantic. Skirting in and out of agricultural lands, oranges, lemons, vineyards and cork oak trees abound, all the ingredients for civilized living. (Cork trees that are harvested for their cork store up to five times more carbon than unharvested trees. Good reason to keep that corkscrew handy!) The destination is Cabo St. Vicente in the Algarve. History buffs can tune into stories about Prince Henry the Navigator (15th century) whose playground was this coastline. The per person double rate is from £979. www.freewheelholidays.co.uk/cycling-holidays-portugal/lisbon-to-algarve

Algarve Coast to Coast capitalizes on Portugal’s expanding bicycle-friendly infrastructure. This itinerary is along the Ecovia do Litoral (bike path) that links Vila Real de Santo António on the Spanish border with Cabo de São Vicente (Sagres) in the west, spanning nearly the whole of the southern Algarve coastline. Eastern Algarve originates near the Spanish border in eastern Portugal, dipping on and off of the Algarve coast, through fishing villages and past resorts, onto the cobblestone streets of market towns in farming regions and a one-time Moorish capital, Silves, home to the best-preserved castle in the Algarve. A nature park encompassing a lagoon is a prime setting for birds that migrate seasonally between northern Europe and Africa.  The per person double rate is from £839 www.freewheelholidays.co.uk/cycling-holidays-portugal/eastern-algarve

Western Algarve begins in Silves (near the airport in Faro), once a stronghold of the Moors, and follows the southern coast of the Algarve westward, picking up the Ecovia do Litoral, the dedicated cycle route that runs along the Algarve coast from Cape St. Vincent northwards. After the sybaritic delights of the historic beach town of Lagos, bikes are at rest in Sagres (just before reaching the cape) as travellers surf, windsurf, relax on the beach or explore the old fortress. Leaving the coast reveals the Serra de Monchique, a thickly wooded mountain range separating the Algarve from the vineyards of the Alentejo. Hottest Trend in European Cycling - Freewheel Holidays Reports Surge in Requests for Electric Bike Option

MANCHESTER, UK, May 17, 2018– Nobody gets left behind on self-guided bicycle vacations in Europe when E-Bikes(electric bicycles) are added to the mix.

Freewheel Holidays (https://www.freewheelholidays.co.uk/), the trailblazer in two-wheel, self-guided European vacations, reports that requests for E-Bike rentals are on the rise. Thus far in 2018, sign-ups for E-Bike options represent over 12 percent of all cycling holiday bookings being made. They outpace requests for regular bicycles in some countries such as Holland. When itineraries call for cycling 50km a day, E-Bikes are a security blanket for some clients.

This growth is reported worldwide. According to Cycling Industry News, the global electric bike market is projected to increase 60+ percent by 2025, on course to generate a value of US $8.5 billion.

What’s driving this expansion?

“Our active travelers often defy the common definition of ‘senior travelers,’” said Steven Rittey, Freewheel Holidays spokesperson. “They’re fitter than ever with surprising energy and stamina. But there seems to be a growing segment that appreciates the fall-back position of an electric bike. Some clients, regardless of age, simply prefer the no-strain comfort of riding E-Bikes. The stigma about them as an easy option or ‘cheating’ is fading. E-Bikesactually encourage travellers above the age of 50 to continue cycling later into life.”

E-Bikescome with a supplemental fee, but the enjoyment outweighs the extra cost, he explained. Using a power-assisted bike helps smooth out inclines or longer days in the saddle. Each E-Bikes features an LCD display, removable batteries for easy charging and assistance up to 25 km/h with a range of around 120 km for each full charge depending on usage.

“These are lightweight aluminum frame bikes with a lithium ion battery-operated motor that when engaged, boosts a rider’s natural human power, enabling him/her to pedal with less effort farther and faster. When the route gets steep and a rider is ready for extra power, they just hit a button and select an assist level and continue pedaling. At day’s end batteries are removed and charged for tomorrow’s ride,” explains Rittey.

Following is a sampling of Freewheel Holidays’ self-guided bicycle vacations offering E-Bikes options. Tour rates include accommodation, breakfasts, sometimes other meals, bike rental with option to upgrade to E-Bikes for an extra charge, itinerary-related fees, luggage transfers, detailed route notes and cycling maps, emergency phone service and more.

Summer Travel - Freewheel Holidays Rolls Out Self-Guided European Bicycle Vacations for Active Families

MANCHESTER, UK, May 1, 2018– The international specialist in self-guided bicycle holidays suggests adding two-wheel travel into a family vacation in Europe this summer.

“Many Freewheel Holidays are well suited to and designed just for families and kids as young as five,” said Steven Rittey, company spokesperson. “Mixing bicycles into vacation plans is a great way to instill healthy, outdoor habits in a fun and engaging way without the distractions of smart phones, tablets and the like.”

Following are Freewheel Holidays’ (https://www.freewheelholidays.co.uk/) top picks for child-friendly vacations on two wheels. The cycle paths and quiet back roads on itineraries from the Swiss Alps to the Costa Brava typically feature shorter and flatter stages for engaging little legs. In Worlds of Their Own, Surrounded by the Sea, European Islands Offer the Perfect Escape for Self-Guided Cycling with Freewheel Holidays

MANCHESTER, UK, Mar. 7, 2018– An international specialist in self-guided bicycle vacations suggests that island escapes – on two wheels – can be the perfect antidote to the stresses of daily life.

Freewheel Holidays (www.freewheelholidays.com) maintains an extensive portfolio of self-guided tours of European islands. These adventures include, among others, inn and/or bed and breakfast accommodations, bike rental (often with electric bike options), luggage transfers, detailed route maps and notes, and the expert services of tour host.

An 8-day Menorca Cycling Holiday introduces guests to one of Spain's Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean Sea, renowned for its beautiful beaches and calasor turquoise bays, ancient megalithic monuments and pine-fringed coastline. Quieter than its neighboring islands of Majorca and Ibiza, Menorca is relaxed and low-key. The underline here is rural, including the accommodations, after riding through a spectacular coastal landscape dotted with lighthouses and imposing cliffs, relaxing beaches, visiting fortresses, caves and ancient settlements and imbibing the scents of the pine forests and lush farmland.

Guests are encouraged to linger in Ciutadella, a veritable jewel built of limestone whose stately palaces resonate in creamy golden hues. Limestone paves the narrow streets with their lovely arched porches built in medieval times. The gargoyles on the cathedral were carved from it. Ciutadella's walls tell a story of feudal lords, medieval traditions and invading Turkish pirates. But the city has moved on within these historic surroundings, and filled the streets and little squares with charming outdoor cafes and designer shops. The sheltered harbour lies under the ramparts and has plenty of delightful restaurants to choose from. The per person double rate (changes by season) starts at £689. For details see http://www.freewheelholidays.co.uk/tour/menorca-7-nights-self-guided.

Madeira (think wine) is called the flower island of the Atlantic. An 8-day Madeira Flowers and Coast vacation brings guests onto panoramic roads and cycle routes, with stops at parks, gardens, bays and cliff-top overlooks. This island boasts summer year-round, with departures also year-round and seasonally priced rates from £799 per person double. Fishing villages, basket weavers and thatched farmhouses hint at this island’s charm infused with Portuguese hospitality. For details see http://www.freewheelholidays.co.uk/tour/madeira-flowers-and-coast-cycling-holiday.

Sardinia Short Break is a 5-day cycle around this Italian island’s southwest corner through some of its most spectacular scenery, including a ride along the renowned Costa del Sud. The island was immortalized decades ago by English writer D.H. Lawrence in his book, Sea and Sardinia. He travelled by bus around the island. Thistour focuses on cycling along stretches of white sand and dipping into hidden coves, plus time out for a sprinkling of historical must-sees, including an important Phoenician site from 3,000 years ago and Bronze Age stone ruins shaped like beehives. Guests may also arrange for lunch or dinner (in addition to breakfast) for an extra fee at their host hotels. The per person double rate is £419. The tour is available from now through late June 2018. For details see http://www.freewheelholidays.co.uk/tour/sardinia-4-nights. An 11-day experience is also available. For details see http://www.freewheelholidays.co.uk/tour/sardinia-classic-cycling-holiday.

Great for families, Denmark offers an 8-day Funen Fairytale Island Tour at £979 per person double from now through end August. Rates for singles and children are available. Often referred to as the garden of Denmark, Funen is the birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen and home to the 16th century Castle Egeskov, hosting a world-class garden plus a fine collection of old cars, airplanes and bicycles. The island’s population hub is Odense, Denmark’s third largest city where humans have lived for over 4,000 years and that was a medieval commercial center. This tour embraces small villages with cobblestone streets, centuries-old churches and dwellings that look as if they came right from a fairy tale. At a maritime center, Svenborg Harbour, visitors can wonder at a fine collection of old wooden ships and imagine sagas on the open seas. For details see http://www.freewheelholidays.co.uk/tour/fairytale-island-family-tour-7-nights.

The Plot Thickens while Cycling Through Cinema Sites in Europe On Freewheel Holidays’ Bike Vacations

MANCHESTER, UK, Nov. 27, 2017 – The late actress Anita Eckberg buffed up Rome’s allure while splashing in the Trevi Fountain in the 1960 film La Dolce Vita. Scores of movies today have cemented plots in locales that, like the fountain, intersect with planned vacation itineraries offered by leading tour operators.

One trend-setting company, Freewheel Holidays, specializing in self-guided bicycle vacations throughout Europe, offers the chance to visit cinema locations on several of its 2018 itineraries. Included in program rates are lodging with breakfasts, detailed route notes, point-to-point luggage transfers and complimentary bike rentals.

Movie buffs or anyone with a love of history and adventure will enjoy these bike tours:

Austria’s Lake Constance welcomed the crew filming Quantum of Solace. Cyclists can visit the strikingly modern opera house (Festspielhaus Bregenz) where the nefarious Quantum organization meet up during a performance of Tosca.  Lake Constance Family Special is a 7-day journey that wanders through vineyards and Baroque villages, and by castles and Roman ruins, with suggested stops at the Zeppelin Museum to view a model of the famous Hindenburg airship.  The per person double rate is from £569. For details seehttp://www.freewheelholidays.co.uk/tour/lake-constance-family-cycling-tour.

Italy’s Venice was the site for The Talented Mr. Ripley. On any of Freewheel Holidays’ itineraries of Venice, guests can stop for an espresso at the old café in Piazza San Marco, a meeting place for Ripley (Matt Damon), Marg (Gwyneth Paltrow) and Mr. Greenleaf (James Rebhorn). Tours range from five to eight days. Venice Round Tour is one example. Days 1, 2 and 7 focus on Venice. Other days are spent exploring the foothills of the Italian Alps near Vicenza to Bassano del Grappa to Treviso, enroute sampling trademark grappas and proseccos and Italian village life beyond La Serenissima. The per person double rate is £619 and includes bike rentals. For details see http://www.freewheelholidays.co.uk/tour/venice-round-tour-7-nights.

Belgium’s Bruges is a treasure trove for cyclists who watched In Bruges. They can visit where the hitmen hole up, Relais Bourgondisch Cruyce Hotel, and brave, like Ken (Brendan Gleeson), the 366 narrow steps of the Belfry. They can meet for a beer as the main characters did at 1 Zwart Huis (the Black House) and gaze, as did guilt-stricken Ray (Colin Farrell), at the Hieronymus Bosch painting of The Last Judgment at the Groeninge Museum and dine at Cafedraal where Ray enjoys his first date with the cheerfully drug-dealing Chloe (Clémence Poésy), before punching out the lights of a Canadian couple. They might even linger, as Ray and Chloe did, on the Meestraat Bridge, between Vismarkt (Fishmarket) and the Groenerel. Bruges and Belgian Coast is a 7-day itinerary that targets families with easy cycling routes and child-friendly attractions. Rates are from £469 per person double. For details see http://www.freewheelholidays.co.uk/tour/bruges-and-belgian-coast-6-nights.

Czech Republic’s Prague can be visited through the lens of Mission Impossible. As the mission falls apart, controller Jim Phelps (Jon Voight) falls into the Vltava River from the famous Charles Bridge; the art deco headquarters of villain Max (Vanessa Redgrave) is the Hotel Europa on Wenceslas Square. Prague to Vienna is a 9-day holiday linking these cultural capitals with lakes, forests, vineyards, the old Iron Curtain and historic towns of south Bohemia and Moravia, including two UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The per person double rate is from £949. For details see http://www.freewheelholidays.co.uk/tour/prague-to-vienna-self-guided-cycling-holiday.

Another itinerary in this region utilizes the Elbe (River) cycling path between Prague and Dresden. Enroute to Dresden’s Zwinger Palace, Semperoper (Opera House) and Frauenkirche is Theresienstadt, a World War II concentration camp. For details seehttp://www.freewheelholidays.co.uk/tour/prague-to-dresden-cycling-holiday.

UK’s Oxfordshire made an indelible impression in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Firewhen Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint) learns to waltz at Divinity School, Bodleian Library, Oxford.  He recovers here after being poisoned in Harry Potter and The Half Blood Prince. In Duke Humfrey’s Library in the Bodleian Library, Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) and Hermione (Emma Watson) mull over who to take to Slughorn’s Christmas party. Oxford & The Cotswolds is a 7-day program offering glimpses of England’s finest stately home, Blenheim Palace, and quiet villages that seem removed from the 21st century. The per person double rate is £599. For details see http://www.freewheelholidays.co.uk/tour/oxford-amp-the-cotswolds.

This 6-night vacation available from May through August is from £699 per person, double. For more details please see http://www.freewheelholidays.co.uk/tour/innsbruck-to-munich-6-nights.

Turin to San Remo -‘Alpine Panorama to the Riviera of Flowers’ begins in Italy’s first capital, Turin and proceeds on a bike path through the Po River Valley. This 7-night vacation available from April through October is from £749 per person, double. Because this is Italy, a gourmet meal and a freshly pressed fruit cocktail by the Riviera of the Flowers (Sanremo) are included in the rate.
