Why Moab?

Surrounded by an immense red rock playground, Moab, Utah, is unlike any other place in the world. Its postcard-perfect desert is adorned with giant sandstone formations, canyon mazes, rock spires, hoodoos and fins plus thousands of natural arches. The Colorado River flows past its northern border and several national and state parks are accessible from Moab.  Between the red rock wonders of Arches National Park, the incredible sandstone landscapes of Canyonlands National Park, and the cool forests of the La Sal Mountains, Moab offers endless opportunity for sight-seeing and exploration.

The town, with a resident population of just 5,000 swells to two to three times that in the popular spring to fall recreation season. Through the experts at MAC visitors can find great accommodation choices with dozens of hotels in Moab, condos, campgrounds and RV parks throughout Moab’s southwestern-style Main Street area.

Area Attractions

  • Arches National Park

Arches National Park preserves over two thousand natural sandstone arches, including the world-famous Delicate Arch, in addition to a variety of unique geological resources and formations. In some areas, faulting has exposed millions of years of geologic history. The extraordinary features of the park, including balanced rocks, fins and pinnacles, are highlighted by a striking environment of contrasting colors, landforms and textures.

  • Canyonlands National Park

Canyonlands National Park preserves a colorful landscape of sedimentary sandstones eroded into countless canyons, mesas and buttes by the Colorado River and its tributaries. the park sits in a vast basin bordered by sheer cliffs of Wingate Sandstone.

  • Dead Horse Point State Park

Located about 25 miles from Moab, Dead Horse Point is a popular destination for a day-trip. The central feature of the park is the spectacular vista that opens up as you stand on the edge of a 2,000 cliff overlooking Canyonlands National Park.

  • Manti-La Sal National Forest and Mountains

Along the eastern Utah border near Moab, the La Sal Mountains rise 12,721 feet above sea level. This part of the Forest provides climatic relief to the desert of the Colorado River Plateau. Narrow forest roads lead travelers to the high mountain passes, and into narrow canyons like Dark Canyon where the crystalline rock structure of the peaks is exposed for all to see or into Mill Creek where Oowah Lake sparkles as a small jewel amid spruce trees.

What to Do in Moab

Bordering town, the mighty Colorado skirts Arches National Park and cuts through the heart of Canyonlands National Park. Nearby, the historic and beautiful Green River carves its serpentine path through canyons deeper than the Grand Canyon. Trips range from mild-to-wild one-day and half-day excursions to multi-day rafting vacations. The Moab Adventure Center has information, continuous big-screen videos and special pricing. Advance reservations are suggested. See: http://www.moabadventurecenter.com/trips/rafting

Moab’s must-do hike is the maze-like Fiery Furnace in Arches National Park. The hike twists and turns among contorted orange-tan fins, towers, spires and arches. Moab Adventure Center guides/naturalists lead two-hour hikes in this trackless area, pointing out hidden attractions such as Surprise and Twin Arches. Although the walk/hike is moderately strenuous in places, it can be enjoyed by anyone in reasonably good physical condition. A brief tour of the Park is provided along with the hike. See: http://www.moabadventurecenter.com/activities/hiking.php

Moab's legendary landscape inspires those of the vertical persuasion to climb and conquer, or drop a rope and descend into the hidden waterways that slice into the desert floor. You don't need any experience with climbing or canyoneering to enjoy these adventures with us. We provide all the equipment and instruction you need to enjoy a step out of the horizontal world. Find yourself literally attached to this iconic red rock landscape!  See: http://www.moabadventurecenter.com/trips/rock-climbing/

Many cyclists first heard about Moab when word spread about the Moab Slickrock Trail which loops through an expanse of rippled, undulating sandstone resembling a frozen, orange ocean. Although the Slickrock may be the nation’s most famous fat-tire route, there are dozens of other rock-and-mountain roads and trails. Rides range from a few hours to three or four days. Even novice riders can sign up for relatively level, easy terrain. The Moab Adventure Center has several guided trips and information. See: http://www.moabadventurecenter.com/trips/biking

The sheer magnificence of the several state and national parks and monuments surrounding Moab can best be appreciated from the airborne perspective of an eagle. In just an hour or two of flight-seeing, you can experience all of Canyonlands National Park, including the sculptured, red-rock canyons of the Colorado and Green rivers. Comfortable and reliable Cessna aircraft provide window seating for each passenger. A detailed flight map and stereo headsets facilitate interpretation.  See: http://www.moabadventurecenter.com/trips/flights

For those that have done it, they say it is like nothing else. The ride is smooth and tranquil in a balloon as you fly with the wind, rather than through it like fixed wing planes. With no fixed route or determined flight path, each balloon ride is a true adventure. Add to these sensations the thrill of an undulating desert floor rising and falling below you in dramatic sheer cliffs, spires, and gaping canyon country as far as the early morning light extends.  See: http://www.moabadventurecenter.com/trips/hot-air-balloon-rides-moab-utah/

Venture into the Wild West with gentle cowboy-trained quarter horses. Guided by a professional wrangler, you'll explore the trails made famous by John Wayne himself. New tack and equipment will make your ride as comfortable as can be. So saddle-up and take a trek into the horizon of Moab. One of the best horseback rides can be found through Castle Creek Canyon with views of towering cliffs and famous Castle Rock.  See: http://www.moabadventurecenter.com/trips/horseback

Visitors who “like to have it their way” can now call the shots on what they see and do in the area. The center’s custom tour program now puts all of this region’s ways and means of touring at the disposal of guests who prefer private travel over pre-set itineraries and group travel. Plans can be made in advance of arrival or on the spot. See: http://moabadventurecenter.com/trips/private-tours/

Hell’s Revenge Trail in Moab Officially Designated As a National Trail - a Top Destination for Off-Road Thrill Seekers and Nature Lovers

MOAB, UT, Oct. 17, 2024 – The National Park Service has officially designated the legendary Hell’s Revenge Trail, just outside of Moab, as a National Trail, adding to the area’s allure for adventure seekers. Famous for its high-intensity off-roading, Hell’s Revenge offers breathtaking views of Arches and Canyonlands National Parks, two gems in the National Park Service’s crown.

Moab Adventure Center, the premier hub for adventure experiences in the region, reports that its popular Hummer tours traverse this iconic 6.5-mile trail, which is nestled in the Sand Flats Recreation Area just minutes from downtown Moab.

“Hells Revenge combines the best of Moab’s rugged terrain, from thrilling slick rock climbs to petrified sand dunes and rock-crawling challenges,” says Patrick Bishoff, Land Tours Manager at Moab Adventure Center. “It’s an adrenaline-packed journey that our experienced drivers make perfect for all adventure levels.”

Bishoff adds that the trail offers some of the most spectacular scenery in the region, especially during the cooler spring and fall months when the snow-capped La Sal Mountains serve as a stunning backdrop to the red rock landscape.

Hell’s Revenge boasts many ominously named obstacles like Tip Over Challenge, Hell's Gate, Dragon's Tail and the infamous Hot Tubs—each offering its own unique thrill. “Our Hummer tours don’t traverse all of these more intense obstacles, but there is still plenty of excitement throughout the tour,” states Bishoff.

Moab Adventure Center’s custom-built Hummer H1 trucks are designed to handle the toughest obstacles on any terrain, making them the ideal vehicle to tackle Hell’s Revenge. “The slow-speed nature of rock crawling allows guests to fully take in the scenery while enjoying the exhilaration of near-vertical climbs and steep descents,” Bishoff explains. “Our guides provide plenty of opportunities to learn about the area’s history, geology, and, of course, the Hummer itself.”

Moab Adventure Center offers three distinct guided Hummer tours, available through November:

  • 2-Hour Moab Hummer Safari: The most popular off-road adventure in Moab, this tour immerses guests in the geological and historical significance of the region while overlooking Arches National Park and the Colorado River.
  • Sunset Safari Hummer Tour: A 3-hour adventure westward toward Canyonlands National Park, where guests watch the sun dip below the horizon, casting a golden glow over the rugged terrain.

For those who prefer to take the wheel themselves, Moab Adventure Center also offers Jeep rentals for self-guided exploration.

Choose Your Ultimate Colorado River Adventure: Thrilling Rapids or Scenic Family Float with Moab Adventure Center

MOAB, UT, May 23, 2024 – You’ve landed in the red rock playground of Moab, Utah. You want to spend a full day on the river but there’s a decision to make. Faced with two very different options, you have a choice. One adventure challenges even die-hard wilderness warriors thanks to on-river thrills and world-class rapids; the other offers a pleasant river passage with indescribable scenery and a few splashes thrown in for fun.

Moab Adventure Center is the go-to hub for researching and arranging river rafting and a myriad of other activities in the greater Moab region. Here visitors can get the advice of professional river rafters, including Nathan Van Buren, a recent graduate from the University of Utah who augmented his studies in Outdoor Recreation as a river guide. His blog explains the differences between the two full-day river rafting options. “One Day Rafting Moab: Westwater vs. Castle Valley” lays out the many benefits offered by these two distinct sections of the Colorado River. Please see https://www.moabadventurecenter.com/blogs/stories/one-day-rafting-in-moab-westwater-vs-castle-valley

How different are these on-river experiences?

For starters, one adventure accepts children as young as age 5. The other accepts only ages 12 and up. One itinerary lures guests off of the river at noon to enjoy a hot BBQ lunch served up with the hospitality of a leisurely riverside lodge. The other requests that guests linger on the shore for an efficient al fresco lunch before continuing the on-river excitement. Each itinerary utilizes boat styles most appropriate to the river terrain. One itinerary boasts Class III-IV rapids; the other fun, Class II whitewater.

“If you’re looking to get your adrenaline flowing, the Colorado River flowing through Westwater Canyon is the place to be. On the other hand, the Castle Valley section of the Colorado River gets you outside to enjoy a scenic float with some splashy rapids,” said Van Buren.

Westwater Full Day Rafting Adventure departs at 7:30 a.m. daily May through September. The per person rate of $229 (ages 12-adult) is the ticket price to “The West’s Best Short Whitewater Trip” as named by National Geographic Magazine. Included are transportation to and from the river, lunch, snacks, water bottles and drinks, life jackets and helmets, the guided adventure with professional guides at the helm of oar-powered boats or paddleboats, depending on water levels. For details please see https://www.moabadventurecenter.com/westwater-canyon-rafting

Colorado River Full-Day Rafting Adventure into Castle Valley departs at 8 a.m. daily April through October. The per person rate of $134 ($110 ages 5-12) includes an exclusive hot BBQ lunch at Red Cliffs Lodge, complimentary flip-top bottle, transportation to and from the river, complimentary hotel pickup available upon request, lifejackets, guides, equipment for rafting (choice of paddleboat or 2-person inflatable kayaks depends on water conditions). This section can also be enjoyed as a half-day, morning or afternoon adventure. For details please see https://www.moabadventurecenter.com/colorado-river-rafting-full-day

Moab Adventure Center Announces New, Half-Day, Guided E-Mountain Bike Tours

MOAB, UT, March 26, 2024 – Marriages may be made in heaven, but from March through November 2024, they’ll be made in Moab, Utah, where Moab Adventure Center is partnering the latest off-road E-Bikes with one of Moab’s iconic biking trails.

A brand-new adventure, Klondike Bluffs E-Mountain Biking Tour, targets intermediate mountain biking enthusiasts who will jump on Santa Cruz Heckler SL’s, 10 pounds lighter than the full-size Heckler (but still with plenty of battery time and power for most riders). The E-Bike inventory will also include Transition Relays and Commencal Meta Power HT 24" for sizes XSmall and XXS.

“Experiencing Klondike Bluffs on an E-bike allows riders to go farther and see more of this incredible area than on our previous standard Klondike Bluffs adventure,” says Brandon Lake, co-owner of Moab Adventure Center. “On top of that, it’s just so much fun. Even for experienced mountain bikers, this is a new, must-try Moab experience.”

The tour includes moderate, sustained climbs on varied slickrock terrain, playful downhills, prehistoric dinosaur tracks and an astounding overlook of Arches National Park. Even though it’s an E-bike tour, riders should still be in good shape and be minimally at an intermediate mountain biking skill level.

The rate for a minimum of two guests for this 4.5-hour tour that departs Moab Adventure Center in downtown Moab is $185 for adults and youth (12 and up). Included are:

●      Class I E-Mountain Bike & Helmet

●      Small Water Bottle

●      Guided Instruction and Nature Interpretation

●      All Transfers from Moab Adventure Center to the trails and back

●      $20 Off When Using Own Bike

Moab, Utah, has become the undisputed "Mecca" for mountain bike enthusiasts by virtue of its beautiful red rock terrain, views that go on forever and trails that range from beginner to advanced to suit all riding abilities. According to an October 2023 article in Singletracks Newsletter, a leading authoritative resource for mountain biking information and inspiration, “Moab, Utah is the Number One destination in the US for mountain biking.”

Author Greg Heil (former Editor in Chief for Singletracks for five years) wrote in an article highlighting the top mountain biking trails in the USA: “With a mix of old classics and new purpose-built trails spanning a wide range of environments from high-alpine singletrack to desert rock and sand, Moab is no slouch in the trail department. And, with the completion of The Whole Enchilada route, you can experience all those environments in one epic ride. In addition to all the great riding, Moab is also home to two national parks, a signature state park, and more open BLM land than you could ever explore in a lifetime. Wrap all this up with plentiful lodging, affordable eats, several microbreweries, excellent bike shops, and plenty of camping options, and you’ve got yourself a bona fide world-class mountain biking destination.”

Moab Adventure Center pioneered Moab-based Electric Dirt Bike Tours in 2023. These guided tours provide an incredible way to experience mind-blowing views of the Colorado River without even turning your pedals.

Moab Adventure Center Outlines Ways to Celebrate 60th Anniversary of Utah’s Canyonlands National Park

MOAB, UT, Jan. 31, 2024 – In 1964, 257,640 acres of high desert in Utah were formally designated by President Lyndon B. Johnson as Canyonlands National Park. Some 10,000 years ago Native Americans lingered here long enough to signal their presence through drawings (petroglyphs) on rock walls. Only 2,000 years ago hunter-gatherer tribes created granaries to store their harvests. Many granaries still survive. Early European settlers gazed farther west, leaving this geologically challenging world as the hideout for a handful of outlaws.

Today, with its 60th anniversary upon us, Canyonlands National Park remains the least visited among Utah’s “Big 5” national parks despite offering some of the best rafting, hiking, jeep tours, mountain biking and canyoneering in the country. In 2024, Moab Adventure Center is making it easier than ever to access some or all of the vast park.

One of the most overlooked (and most breathtaking) districts of Canyonlands National Park is the River District. Carving its way through this unmatched landscape is the mighty Colorado River. Kam Wixom, Marketing Director for Moab Adventure Center, reports “a remarkable surge in popularity” with their 96-mile, 2-day Cataract Canyon Express raft trip (per person rate $955) or Cataract Canyon 4-Day Expedition (perperson rate $1935) through class III-IV rapids in the heart of Canyonlands National Park.  Rates include transfers, hiking, camping, meals and whitewater rafting (plus scenic flight on 4-day trip).

For those who can only spare a few hours on the river, Colorado River Jet Boat Fun Run for $139 per person is a three-hour, 64-mile jet boat excursion with canopy-covered seating into spectacular river scenery bordering Canyonlands National Park. Snacks and drinks are served along with commentary by the guide/pilot. Keep an eye out for a petrified forest, fossil beds, spectacular rock cliffs, Indian ruins, petroglyphs and arches. See: https://www.moabadventurecenter.com/jet-boat-colorado-river

To grasp the grandeur and enormity of all of Canyonlands, Moab Adventure Center can arrange a one-hour Canyonlands National Park Airplane Tour. The flights are year-round and scheduled to depart daily at 9 a.m. All guests have window views and headsets to enjoy the commentary of a professional pilot on a 125-mile flyover that includes regions inaccessible to hikers. The per-person rate is $249 ($187 ages 12-3). An 80-minute Arches and Canyonlands Airplane Tour also departs year-round daily. The per person rate is $329 ($247 ages 12-3). See https://www.moabadventurecenter.com/moab-air-tours for details.

Moab Adventure Center also maps out 4x4 Jeep Rentals for up to five passengers (including driver) available for one-day or multi-day use. The vehicles are brand-new modified Jeep Rubicons, considered the best and most capable jeep to explore the trails. Jeep Rubicons feature an automatic transmission, a 3-inch lift kit, oversized tires, seat belts for 5, and free satellite radio.  A per-vehicle daily rate of $330 includes a book of trail maps, a cooler of water and ice, and 150 free miles daily. GPS signal monitors in every Jeep means you are never really lost in the backcountry surrounding Moab. Complimentary airport and in-town shuttles are included. See https://www.moabadventurecenter.com/moab-jeep-rentals-rubicon

It even includes time management touring tips for those with one hour or several days to spend in one or more of NPS’ designated regions – called sections – of Canyonlands. Moab Adventure Center Reports 2023 Bookings Exceeded Expectations and Forecasted to Continue in 2024

MOAB, UT, Jan. 11, 2024 – Based on the record-setting (pre-pandemic) number of visitors that Moab Adventure Center served on some of its most popular tours in 2023, this go-to hub in Moab, Utah, predicts a similar flood of visitors in 2024.

Moab Adventure Center serves the needs of activity-minded visitors to this red rock playground. Here Kam Wixom, Marketing Director for Moab Adventure Center, enjoys a privileged, bird’s eye perspective on this region that is home base for both Arches and Canyonlands National Parks.

“Last year our region vied for attention with Europe: canyons competed with catacombs, natural arches with lavish porticoes and soaring spires with the likes of the Eiffel Tower. We were on the alert for downturns with the post-pandemic, pent-up demand for traveling in Europe.  But fortunately, Moab Adventure Center not only escaped any down-turns but we broke previous records for some of our most popular tours,” Wixom adds.

He expects his company’s tours to be even more sought after in 2024.

“Historically, travel does trend slower in an election year; but we predict people will be longing to unplug from the political hoopla by escaping into the silence of the wilderness. This is what we’re all about here in Moab,” he underscores.

Based on last year’s numbers, Wixom advises taking an early-bird approach to booking Moab Adventure Center’s highly sought-after national park, river rafting, and canyoneering tours.

“With bookings for the coming season starting off strong and indications it will be another record season, Moab Adventure Center recommends planning ahead to make the most of your visit to Moab and the surrounding national parks,” he adds.

Our Arches National Park tours have more than doubled to record levels compared to peak years prior to the pandemic. Wixom attributes this growth to a relatively new, timed-entry system that disburses visitors to Arches National Park in an orderly fashion. While this system helps prevent the overcrowding of years past, visitors are required to apply in advance for their allotted entry times.

“We think part of the uptick is because our tours automatically include timed entries. Not only do guests have the convenience of booking a confirmed tour with confirmed entry, but they also experience learning about the park and its breathtaking formations from expert naturalists -- without having to worry about driving, traffic, and parking,” he underscores.

The “leave the planning to the Moab Adventure Center” also accounts for the high number of requests for the Center’s most popular Moab rafting trip, the Colorado River Full-Day Adventure, Wixom notes. This excursion, complete with an exclusive BBQ lunch at a riverside ranch, reached the highest bookings ever recorded.

“This river adventure runs from March through October and is generally a mild and scenic float trip most of the season, but it can be more exciting late May through mid-June, depending on runoff and water levels. Most love it for the astounding scenery of Castle Valley and the spectacular canyons that follow. This area has been made famous by numerous movies, including Mission Impossible, City Slickers, and The Lone Ranger,” he explains.

Moab Adventure Center experienced what Wixom calls “a remarkable surge in popularity” with its Cataract Canyon Express trip.  This exhilarating journey offers adventure-seekers a condensed yet intense experience of the majestic Cataract Canyon, located in the heart of Canyonlands National Park. This trip, he explains, is uniquely designed to fit into a shorter time frame, making it an ideal choice for those with limited vacation time but who have a strong desire for adventure.

He suggests that those seeking an even more immersive experience that many call the best vacation of their lives, consider Moab Adventure Center's all-inclusive Desolation Canyon 5-Day Expeditionor Cataract Canyon 4-Day Expedition.

Moab Adventure Center's newest Moab Canyoneering experience through Bow & Arrow canyon was up 20 percent in 2023. Wixom describes this half-day adventure as “a beautiful hike paired with four incredible rappels, fossilized dino tracks, ancestral Puebloans petroglyphs, a spectacular arch, and majestic views. We added this trip to provide an additional experience for those who have already tried Moab's most popular canyoneering trip, Morning Glory Arch, which features a memorable rappel into a hidden grotto and a rappel off Morning Glory Arch followed by a hike along the spring-fed streams of Granstaff Canyon.”

Perfection on Four Wheels – Why Moab is America’s Top Off-Roading Paradise

Moab, Utah is well known for its world-class river rafting, mountain biking, and canyoneering, as well as the distinction of being home to two jewels in the National Parks crown: Arches and Canyonlands. But those in the know will tell you there’s no place like Moab in the world for off-road adventures via Jeep, Hummer, or UTV.

The Moab Adventure Center reports that off-roading is the best way to cover a lot of territory in this vast expanse of wilderness in the shortest amount of time. Four-wheel adventures include exploring on your own with a Jeep rental or guided Hummer safari tours that leave right from the center of town.

Moab Adventure Center’s Director of Marketing, Kam Wixom, shares his thoughts on why the region is America’s top paradise for off-roading.

He gives these seven reasons why Moab rocks the 4x4 world:

  • Plenty of Trails to Choose From- The area’s vast quantity of scenic trails will more than satisfy the most serious off-roader. Many head to iconic Hell's Revenge or nearby Chicken Corners for maximum adrenaline rush and sensational scenery.
  • A Trail for Every Experience Level– For beginners we recommend taking a Jeep rental to Fisher Towers or Onion Creek, just a two-hour trip with easy terrain. Klondike Bluffs or Monitor and Merrimac trails are more moderate options. Experienced off-roaders seek the challenges of Poison Spider Mesa or the Moab Rim Trail.
  • Unbeatable Scenery- With unimaginable natural beauty sliced by the cool waters of the Colorado River, Moab has become one of the most sought-after destinations in the American Southwest. Ranging from Alpine to desert, each eco-system is as unique as it is wild and pristine.
  • Options for Off-roading- Moab Jeep rentals or guided Hummer Safaris ensure that anyone can take advantage of a Moab adventure, even if they haven’t got their own vehicle to take off-roading.
  • Insiders Have Done the Legwork- Not familiar with the area? That’s okay. One can make a reservation with their Jeep rental or a guided Hummer tour or use the resources of the Moab Adventure Center to craft a custom tour. Be sure to check out this free Moab Insider’s Guide to get a head start!
  • There are plenty of places to stay- There’s no shortage of accommodations available, whether it be camping, glamping, B&B or hotel. Check out this helpful resource: https://www.moabadventurecenter.com/moab-lodging
  • You have so much more to do– Plan some extra time to try your hand at other adventures like ziplining, canyoneering, raftingor hot air balloon rides. There’s literally something for all ages to enjoy, from scenic landscapes and national park tours to exciting hikes and outstanding restaurants.

Moab Adventure Center offers the following Jeep rental programs for maximum off-roading experiences:
