Why Moab?
Surrounded by an immense red rock playground, Moab, Utah, is unlike any other place in the world. Arches National Park
Arches National Park preserves over two thousand natural sandstone arches, including the world-famous Delicate Arch, in addition to a variety of unique geological resources and formations. In some areas, faulting has exposed millions of years of geologic history. The extraordinary features of the park, including balanced rocks, fins and pinnacles, are highlighted by a striking environment of contrasting colors, landforms and textures.
- Canyonlands National Park
Canyonlands National Park preserves a colorful landscape of sedimentary sandstones eroded into countless canyons, mesas and buttes by the Colorado River and its tributaries. the park sits in a vast basin bordered by sheer cliffs of Wingate Sandstone.
- Dead Horse Point State Park
Located about 25 miles from Moab, Dead Horse Point is a popular destination for a day-trip. The central feature of the park is the spectacular vista that opens up as you stand on the edge of a 2,000 cliff overlooking Canyonlands National Park.
- Manti-La Sal National Forest and Mountains
Along the eastern Utah border near Moab, the La Sal Mountains rise 12,721 feet above sea level. This part of the Forest provides climatic relief to the desert of the Colorado River Plateau. Narrow forest roads lead travelers to the high mountain passes, and into narrow canyons like Dark Canyon where the crystalline rock structure of the peaks is exposed for all to see or into Mill Creek where Oowah Lake sparkles as a small jewel amid spruce trees.

Moab’s must-do hike is the maze-like Fiery Furnace in Arches National Park. The hike twists and turns among contorted orange-tan fins, towers, spires and arches. Moab Adventure Center guides/naturalists lead two-hour hikes in this trackless area, pointing out hidden attractions such as Surprise and Twin Arches. Many cyclists first heard about Moab when word spread about the Moab Slickrock Trail which loops through an expanse of rippled, undulating sandstone resembling a frozen, orange ocean. Although the Slickrock may be the nation’s most famous fat-tire route, there are dozens of other rock-and-mountain roads and trails. Rides range from a few hours to three or four days. The sheer magnificence of the several state and national parks and monuments surrounding Moab can best be appreciated from the airborne perspective of an eagle. Getting to Moab
Getting to Moab is easy. Daily flights are available directly into the Canyonlands Field Airport (CNY). Car rental service is available at the Moab Airport through Enterprise Rent a Car. You can rent a jeep and have it waiting for you at the airport when you arrive. Shuttle service is also available from the airport if you do not wish to have a car. If you don't choose to fly directly to Moab, you can fly into Salt Lake City, Denver, Grand Junction or Las Vegas and drive to Moab. However you choose to get to Moab, there are plenty of services to make your trip easy and affordable.

Roadwork in Arches National Park Creates Challenges for Visitors - Moab Adventure Center Adds Programs, Suggests Alternatives

Extensive Road Construction Projects Close Park Roads from 7 am to 7 pm Sunday through Thursday through November
MOAB, UT, April 26, 2017– The biggest attraction in Moab, Utah is Arches National Park. Last year this international icon drew a record-breaking 1,585,718 visitors who explored the park both day and night. In 2017 the region anticipates even more visitors. However, because of road crews working here at night, explorations of Arches will be limited to 12 daylight-only hours (7 a.m. to 7 p.m.) Sunday through Thursday.
One company already has plans in place to assure that visitors won’t be disappointed because of the limited park access that continues through Nov. 30, 2017.
“Word has gotten out that Moab is super cool,” says Jamie Pearce, manager of Moab Adventure Center (http://www.moabadventurecenter.com/). “We’re ready for the crowds. However, especially with the challenges tourists will face this year, we are here to help educate visitors to the fact that there is so much more to do in Moab than Arches. Also open for exploration nearby are Canyonlands National Park, Deadhorse Point State Park, and Manti-La Sal National Forest, just to name a few.”
To help adjust for evening park closures, Moab Adventure Center has added a daily morning option, Arches National Park Adventure Tour that meets at the Center at 7 a.m. daily and returns at 12:15 p.m. From a special touring vehicle guests view famous landmarks and vistas while also enjoying short guided hikes to a collection of spectacular arches.
For travelers whose hearts are set on sunset, on Friday and Saturday evenings only Arches National Park Sunset Discovery via sightseeing van is available. Views of famous Balanced Rock, Courthouse Towers, La Sal Mountains, Petrified Dunes, and Panorama Point highlight the trip. Short guided walks to the North and South Window Arches, Turret Arch, and the legendary Delicate Arch Overlook only get better as the setting sun paints the surrounding sandstone monoliths and mountains brilliant hues of red and orange.
The local experts at the Moab Adventure Center also suggest a Sunset Hummer Safari that winds guests through sandstone hills, washes and draws outside of town before serving refreshments at a spectacular vista.
“If visitors are not interested in being driven, we’ll help them understand the park layout and assesses how much/little activity and time they want to spend in Arches. Once we have that understanding and present them with all the options, we can help them build the perfect Moab itinerary for their budget and desires,” Pearce adds.
Other ways to experience the park in daylight hours includes a 30-minute flightseeing option, Arches and Towers 30 min Tour, over classic formations such as Courthouse Towers, North and South Window Arches, Delicate Arch, Devil's Garden, the Colorado River, Fisher Towers, and Castle Valley.
Hopping on mountain bikes is also an option. For example, Courthouse Loop: Easy is a great introductory ride that’s perfect for novices or families with younger children that overlooks the Windows section of Arches National Park.
Another option for exploring Arches might be signing up for a Private Photography / Scenery Tour. Guides assure that guests will be able to position cameras for the most photogenic views.
“When ultimate flexibility, privacy and overall control matter, a private, custom trip is the best answer,” adds Pearce.
“Of course,” she points out, “the signature trip from Moab Adventure Center is a rafting adventure down the Colorado River which borders Arches National Park to the southeast as it cuts through Castle Valley.” Offered are half and full day trips as well as a popular overnighter with a full-service camp set up on a sandy beach.

Moab Adventure Center Sees Growth In Private and Customized Outings For Couples, Families and Groups

MOAB, UT, March 22, 2017 – The region’s largest vacation and activity provider, Moab Adventure Center, is embracing the latest trend in group travel – the private, custom- designed tour. They report that more and more clients are now selecting experiences singular to just their group of friends, family and co-workers.
“Over the past several seasons we’ve seen a substantial increase in honeymooners, small groups of friends and couples, VIP's and families requesting private, custom-built itineraries,” according to Jamie Pearce, manager of Moab Adventure Center (http://www.moabadventurecenter.com/). “We've planned trips to epic vistas and trails our guides have discovered where we've jeeped to the top, rappelled down, and biked back to the trailhead. We've 4x4'd in musicians for entertainment and prepped gourmet dinners surrounded by amazing scenery. We've orchestrated off-road experiences for the media and filming events.”
The driving force, speculates Pearce, is that privacy is now the most valued commodity among travelers. Quality of experience is more important than cost, although custom trips can offer greater value than packaged tours based on number of participants. If a group size warrants, it will be treated as a private group without paying increased fees for a private tour. The Moab Adventure Center offers group discounts of up to 20 percent off.
“When ultimate flexibility, privacy and overall control matter, a private, custom trip is the growing answer,” adds Pearce.
Moab Adventure Center offers an expanding menu of private tours for exploring this red rock playground situated between two national parks; Arches and Canyonlands. Clients can build a romantic river escape for just two or an active multi-generational family outing with age-appropriate activities and challenges such as national park tours, mountain biking, Hummer safaris and canyoneering. The Moab Adventure Center can design a custom program for just a day or plan a weeklong multi-day itinerary based on specific requests. The benefits of a custom trip may be, among others, to compliment travel schedules, to provide more intimate personal experiences, to bring unusual dining adventures to the tour and to let clients determine how and where they want to spend their time.
Privacy and exclusivity are usually top of mind when groups of any size plan an outing. The center has recently seen an uptick in adventurescreated specifically for bachelor and bachelorette groups as well as groups of women looking for something different. Pearce assures that, “no request is too outrageous for us to consider, as long as it meets our safety guidelines.”
Another benefit of setting up a private trip is that participants can travel with that group and just those individuals involved. It is appealing for those that want to travel with people of similar beliefs such as a recent Christian Cataract Canyon raft trip set up by the Moab Adventure Center for an area church group.
It is always best to start planning months in advance for the best availability and options. Corporate and special-interest groups are advised to plan minimally eight months to a year out in order to secure appropriate accommodations. A popular potpourri for corporate groups combines whitewater rafting with a Hummer Safari excursion and an afternoon in the national park with ample time for bonding and meetings. Some groups may want to go extreme adventure, while others seek an easy experience. Typical group itineraries of two to three nights start with a welcome dinner at a resort, breakfast, corporate meeting, activity, corporate dinner, guest speaker the following day, another activity, possible another meeting, then end with a farewell dinner and high-energy party.

- Private Hummer Tour– For up to 8 guests @ $350 per hour for vehicle and driver/guides. A gourmet dinner or sunrise breakfast is an extra $50 per person.
- Private Photography / Scenery Tour– A guide/driver takes guests to insider favorites, with pick up at hotel or campground. Rates are available on request.
- Private Stand Up Paddle Boarding Adventure– For up to 6 guests @$600 per departure for private guide and once-in-a-lifetime experience on the Colorado River. Included are transportation, paddleboard rental, instruction, guide, snacks and beverages.
- Private Sunset Raft Trip– A two-person minimum at $300 per person for rafting adventure on the Colorado River with private river guide who explains points of interest along the way. The day can end with an optional dinner at a riverside ranch (for an additional fee).
- Private Tours of Moab and Beyond– Rates are available upon request. This is a four to six-hour outing that can be arranged over several days for an intimate view of the parks and surrounding areas of interest: dinosaur habitats, ancient Puebloan ruins, sites of famous movie locations and more.

Unlike more blustery parts of the United States, winter temperatures in the Moab region are moderate, with daytime highs averaging 44°F in December, 43°F in January, 52°F in February and 63°F in March. There is little to no precipitation. Scenery changes very little from season to season. Juniper trees stay green year-round. Cottonwood trees grow in the bottom of washes and lose their leaves. The main attractions - the red sandstone formations - take on a richer hue in moist conditions and transform themselves when flocked with snow. Heavy snowfall is uncommon. Snow usually melts quickly in sunny areas but may accumulate in shady spots. Winter hikers need to be prepared to cross snow on some trail sections and to use care on icy trails. Most go through areas where there is plenty of sunshine making it very pleasant to hike during the day. Typically all that’s needed is a jacket. Spring comes early in the Arches area. By late February, tiny wild flowers are starting to push through the soil and nighttime temperatures are moderating. February is a great month to visit the national parks.

- Gemini Bridges Trail, exploring a region between Highways 191 and 313, reaches grand vistas and accesses numerous other trails. Here is the spectacular twin arch, called Gemini Bridges, on the rim of an arm of Bull Canyon. A jeep is required on these 48 miles with 14 miles on 4wd road.
- Poison Spider Mesa Trail overlooks the colorful Colorado River and Moab Valley.Expanses of unbroken slick rock and views of the Behind the Rocks area and the La Sal Mountains make it one of the most attractive drives in the area. Jeeps are required on these 36 miles with 16 miles on 4wd road.
- Moab Rim Trail climbs tilted rock strata along the south side of the Colorado River to reach a rim view overlooking Moab, with outstanding views of the river, Spanish Valley and the La Sal Mountains. This 4wd trail is the boundary of the Behind the Rocks Wilderness Study area; the area west of the trail is closed to vehicle travel to protect scenic and primitive recreation values. MOAB, UT, Aug. 8, 2016 – Moab, Utah, flanked by two national parks, is one of the world’s great playgrounds, equal to any popular tourism destination when it comes to healthy, immersive, year-round outdoor recreation and scenery.
And it comes as no surprise that midway into 2016, visits are on the rise to Arches and Canyonlands National Parks and to Moab, the recreation-centered town that serves park travelers. This year, after all, is the “it” year for visiting national parks, thanks to the celebrations and promotions centered around the 100th anniversary of the United States National Park Service.
The go-to hub here is Moab Adventure Center (www.moabadventurecenter.com/) just 4.5 miles from Arches National Park and 30 miles from Canyonlands National Park. While visits to the region show a healthy 11 percent increase over last year, the Center reports that through end July it has seen a strong 8 percent increase in half- and day-long Arches National Park tours. Rafting is up an unprecedented 50 percent, and there’s increased interest in mountain biking and rock climbing.
“But the biggest trend I see is the effort and dedication people make to get here to do our parks,” said Jaime Pearce, manager of Moab Adventure Center.
Last calendar year Arches drew nearly 1.5 million recreation visitors. By June 2016 visitations were up nearly 11 percent over last year. There were close to 10,000 more vehicles entering the park this June compared to June 2016.
“And they’re coming from all over the world,” observes Pearce.
One visitor to Moab in early July said there seemed to be twice as many foreign-speaking travelers as Americans enjoying the region’s offerings. That’s not by accident, however, as information about the area is available via brochures online that can be downloaded in Chinese, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Japanese and Spanish, according to the Moab Travel Council.
“We see a lot of foreign travelers in July and August, but most of the time they’re on their own group or self-contained tours,” said Pearce.
She said that Moab Adventure Center assists foreign visitors by hiring guides who speak multiple foreign languages and matching them up with guests purchasing tours that may range from river rafting to hiking.
“We have an incredible mix of guides. This is one of the things that sets us apart. On TripAdvisor and internal customer satisfaction surveys our guides are also singled out for their professionalism and friendliness,” she said. “They are very knowledgeable, clean cut and cream of the crop.”
As the largest employer in the recreation arena in this region, Moab Adventure Center often retains local guides who have grown up in the area and who know the landscape. Approximately 25 guides are assigned to land tours, another 40 to river programs in the area, and up to 50 escort rafting trips into the Grand Canyon.
Visitors to this region can enter the park 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and therefore plan their arrival and departure to avoid the popular 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. window. An astronomical chart for the region informs visitors when the sun rises and when it sets each month. And it gives a peek at the best dates to plan night hikes to witness the full moon working its magic over the park. Star-gazing nights that celebrate the heavens may also be planned. “I think the park service is doing a great job offering night tours and sky tours,” commented Pearce. “The parks have got it covered.”

Moab Adventure Center Invites Visitors To Test Drive Rafting, Hummer, Other Adventures By Viewing 360º Virtual Reality Video and Photo Tours

Moab, UT, Mar. 31, 2016– Moab Adventure Center conveniently located on the main drag in downtown Moab, UT, is in the business of providing advice, equipment and guided adventure experiences to visitors who come to this wild corner of Utah.
Now sojourners can experience (albeit virtually) how it feels to flightsee in an airplane high above Desolation Canyon, or splash through rolling rapids on the Colorado River rapids or explore Moab’s rugged back country on a Hummer safari.
Brand-new to the travel industry, an emerging technology called virtual reality (VR) incorporates 360º interactive video and photos to simulate these and other iconic Moab adventure experiences.

By so doing, these adventure specialists are among the very first in the international travel industry to add VR technology to their marketing toolbox.
“Here’s the case of an adventure vacation company using VR to entice and educate visitors. More in the mainstream of travel, Marriott International uses VR to help guests explore cities where their hotels are located. We’re all at the cusp of understanding where this is going,” said Brandon Lake, Chief Marketing Officer of Western River Expeditions.
At Moab Adventure Center guests are now able to donaSamsung Gear VR Headset (Oculus software - http://www.samsung.com/us/explore/gear-vr/) and transport themselves to where they think they might like to be: on a 4x4 Hummer safari, rafting on the Green or Colorado rivers or hiking at sunrise through Arches National Park. Lake said his company purchased a dedicated cell phone and viewer for demonstration purposes (VR videos currently need a smartphone to view in combination with a special headset for maximum enjoyment). Now in addition to thumbing through brochures or enjoying photos and video via a website, visitors are exploring their Moab Adventure Center options in virtual reality.
“You put the headset on and you actually have the sensation that you’re in the middle of the adventure. Your entire vision is taken over, looking up, down, right and left, and that’s all you see and hear,” said Lake. “Consumer demand for this kind of ‘see it before you do it’ technology isset to explode in 2016.”
Lake and his team commissioned TrustedPhoto.com http://trustedphoto.com/about/ and 360 Labs to produce four virtual reality shows that can now be viewed at the center and are being imbedded on the newly enhanced http://www.westernriver.com/ website. The shows feature rafting in the Grand Canyon, Cataract Canyon and Desolation Canyon as well as a Hummer safari outside of Moab. The embedded 360º tours keep visitors engaged and inspired. For example, virtual visitors to the Grand Canyon as shown on Western River’s website view the tour for an average 4 minutes and 19 secondsas they move their cursoraround to look upstream and down, up at the cliffs, or inside the boat. Regardless of the device used, for maximum impact, viewers are advised to watch the video in its highest resolution and in full screen mode.
