Why Moab?

Surrounded by an immense red rock playground, Moab, Utah, is unlike any other place in the world. Its postcard-perfect desert is adorned with giant sandstone formations, canyon mazes, rock spires, hoodoos and fins plus thousands of natural arches. The Colorado River flows past its northern border and several national and state parks are accessible from Moab.  Between the red rock wonders of Arches National Park, the incredible sandstone landscapes of Canyonlands National Park, and the cool forests of the La Sal Mountains, Moab offers endless opportunity for sight-seeing and exploration.

The town, with a resident population of just 5,000 swells to two to three times that in the popular spring to fall recreation season. Through the experts at MAC visitors can find great accommodation choices with dozens of hotels in Moab, condos, campgrounds and RV parks throughout Moab’s southwestern-style Main Street area.

Area Attractions

  • Arches National Park

Arches National Park preserves over two thousand natural sandstone arches, including the world-famous Delicate Arch, in addition to a variety of unique geological resources and formations. In some areas, faulting has exposed millions of years of geologic history. The extraordinary features of the park, including balanced rocks, fins and pinnacles, are highlighted by a striking environment of contrasting colors, landforms and textures.

  • Canyonlands National Park

Canyonlands National Park preserves a colorful landscape of sedimentary sandstones eroded into countless canyons, mesas and buttes by the Colorado River and its tributaries. the park sits in a vast basin bordered by sheer cliffs of Wingate Sandstone.

  • Dead Horse Point State Park

Located about 25 miles from Moab, Dead Horse Point is a popular destination for a day-trip. The central feature of the park is the spectacular vista that opens up as you stand on the edge of a 2,000 cliff overlooking Canyonlands National Park.

  • Manti-La Sal National Forest and Mountains

Along the eastern Utah border near Moab, the La Sal Mountains rise 12,721 feet above sea level. This part of the Forest provides climatic relief to the desert of the Colorado River Plateau. Narrow forest roads lead travelers to the high mountain passes, and into narrow canyons like Dark Canyon where the crystalline rock structure of the peaks is exposed for all to see or into Mill Creek where Oowah Lake sparkles as a small jewel amid spruce trees.

What to Do in Moab

Bordering town, the mighty Colorado skirts Arches National Park and cuts through the heart of Canyonlands National Park. Nearby, the historic and beautiful Green River carves its serpentine path through canyons deeper than the Grand Canyon. Trips range from mild-to-wild one-day and half-day excursions to multi-day rafting vacations. The Moab Adventure Center has information, continuous big-screen videos and special pricing. Advance reservations are suggested. See: http://www.moabadventurecenter.com/trips/rafting

Moab’s celebrated “canyonlands” is a postcard-perfect desert adorned with immense sandstone formations. Here, amazing red-rock terrain has eroded into canyon mazes, arches, spires and buttes. A 4x4 vehicle is perhaps the best way for people of all ages to experience the rugged beauty of this vast back country, and the vehicle which offers the most safety, comfort and exceptional climbing ability is unquestionably the Hummer®. Moab’s must-do hike is the maze-like Fiery Furnace in Arches National Park. The hike twists and turns among contorted orange-tan fins, towers, spires and arches. Moab Adventure Center guides/naturalists lead two-hour hikes in this trackless area, pointing out hidden attractions such as Surprise and Twin Arches. Although the walk/hike is moderately strenuous in places, it can be enjoyed by anyone in reasonably good physical condition. A brief tour of the Park is provided along with the hike. See: http://www.moabadventurecenter.com/activities/hiking.php

Many cyclists first heard about Moab when word spread about the Moab Slickrock Trail which loops through an expanse of rippled, undulating sandstone resembling a frozen, orange ocean. Although the Slickrock may be the nation’s most famous fat-tire route, there are dozens of other rock-and-mountain roads and trails. Rides range from a few hours to three or four days. Even novice riders can sign up for relatively level, easy terrain. The Moab Adventure Center has several guided trips and information. See: http://www.moabadventurecenter.com/trips/biking

The sheer magnificence of the several state and national parks and monuments surrounding Moab can best be appreciated from the airborne perspective of an eagle. In just an hour or two of flight-seeing, you can experience all of Canyonlands National Park, including the sculptured, red-rock canyons of the Colorado and Green rivers. Comfortable and reliable Cessna aircraft provide window seating for each passenger. A detailed flight map and stereo headsets facilitate interpretation.  See: http://www.moabadventurecenter.com/trips/flights

For those that have done it, they say it is like nothing else. The ride is smooth and tranquil in a balloon as you fly with the wind, rather than through it like fixed wing planes. With no fixed route or determined flight path, each balloon ride is a true adventure. Add to these sensations the thrill of an undulating desert floor rising and falling below you in dramatic sheer cliffs, spires, and gaping canyon country as far as the early morning light extends.  See: http://www.moabadventurecenter.com/trips/hot-air-balloon-rides-moab-utah/

Venture into the Wild West with gentle cowboy-trained quarter horses. Guided by a professional wrangler, you'll explore the trails made famous by John Wayne himself. New tack and equipment will make your ride as comfortable as can be. So saddle-up and take a trek into the horizon of Moab. One of the best horseback rides can be found through Castle Creek Canyon with views of towering cliffs and famous Castle Rock.  See: http://www.moabadventurecenter.com/trips/horseback

Visitors who “like to have it their way” can now call the shots on what they see and do in the area. The center’s custom tour program now puts all of this region’s ways and means of touring at the disposal of guests who prefer private travel over pre-set itineraries and group travel. Plans can be made in advance of arrival or on the spot. See: http://moabadventurecenter.com/trips/private-tours/

Epicenter of Utah’s Outdoor Recreation, Moab Adventure Center, Reports Strong Spring/Summer Bookings

Moab, UT, June 7, 2013- Moab Adventure Center (MAC) http://www.moabadventurecenter.com/, a one-stop-shopping, activities, reservations and information hub in the epicenter of Utah’s outdoor recreation, reports strong early season bookings and a growing trend for the drive market to book last-minute.

“This year could be a record-setter for advance bookings, and we still have good availability for our half-day and longer adventures thanks to reservation management and increased capacity,” notes Brandon Lake, Moab Adventure Center Co-Founder.

However, while many of the Moab activities offered can be booked up to the day of departure, Lake advises that visitors should book their lodging well in advance of arrival. Choices range from luxury home and villa rentals to dude ranches and motels.  See: http://www.moabadventurecenter.com/lodging/

Moab Area Travel Council spokesperson Marian DeLay reports that room tax collections are up 10 percent over last year at this time and that Utah’s five national parks will benefit from an aggressive national advertising campaign now running, as well as from the U.S. trend for people to take shorter, closer-to-home drive trips.

There are daily flights into Moab’s Canyonlands Field (CNY) from Denver, CO and Prescott, AZ aboard Great Lakes Airlines or guests may opt to drive five hours from Denver, four hours from Salt Lake City or 90 minutes from Grand Junction.  See: http://www.moabadventurecenter.com/transportation/

For first-time visitors to the region, Moab Adventure Center suggests their 4 day / 3 night Southwest Sampler package including lodging, two days of Colorado River rafting, a night of beach camping and exploration of Arches National Park. The all-inclusive package is priced at $615 per person, double for adults and $515 per person, double for ages 5 to 15. See: http://www.moabadventurecenter.com/trips/packages/southwest.php

Bordering Moab to the north and west, Utah’s red rock fantasylands, Canyonlands National Park and Arches National Park, offer time-challenged visitors an immersion course in geology and ancient cultures when they fling themselves into activities showcasing the region’s beauty and diversity.

The advantage of this region, notes Lake, is the choice of activities for all ages and abilities, from hot air ballooning to mountain biking to river rafting and more. His company arranges the equipment and guides for many of the region’s offerings that can be purchased as half and full-day and multiple-day programs. See: http://www.moabadventurecenter.com/activities/

In an effort to encourage guests to stay in Moab longer and to save some money, Moab Adventure Center offers guests a 10 percent discount off each activity when packaging three or more select single-day adventures together.

Moab Adventure Center Pioneers Stand Up Paddleboard Tours On The Colorado River Near Moab, Utah

Moab, UT, May 17, 2012– The award-winning Moab Adventure Center http://www.moabadventurecenter.com/ creates diverse opportunities to explore the red rock playground bordering Arches and Canyonlands National Parks.  Now for the first time ever on the Colorado River in Moab, Utah, this innovative company brings the fastest-growing water sport, Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP) to an imaginative array of guided experiences to explore this region’s scenic wonders.

Stand Up Paddleboard tours, accessing a calm section of the Colorado river, include transportation to the put-in and back from the take-out, board rental (long, 10 to 12-feet Surftech paddleboards), adjustable paddle, personal flotation device, instruction on beach and water, guide, water and snacks. The 2 to 2.5-hour excursions depart mornings and at sunset. Special introductory packages available from now into October are $75 ages 16 and up and $55 ages 10 to 15 (regularly $95 and $75 respectively). See: http://moabadventurecenter.com/trips/moab-stand-up-paddle-board-tours/

This sport that began in Hawaii is “easy to master for just about any age, and provides an excellent full-body workout,” said Brandon Lake, co-founder of Moab Adventure Center. He added that after just a short orientation, guests can stand up on the boards and paddle away. “With the breathtaking scenery of the Colorado River’s canyons, spires and mesas taking center stage, we even see people lying down on their backs, snapping photos and watching the clouds and cliffs drift by. It’s very different than paddling on the ocean or a lake where the scenery is more static,” added Lake.  (See the Moab stand up paddleboard pictures online).

Lake points out, “If a member of your party does not wish to paddleboard, but still wants to float along, we will be happy to provide an inflatable kayak (duckie) to play in.”

According to industry insider, Don Keith, “the sport of Stand Up Paddleboarding is riding a huge wave of popularity across the U.S. and it isn’t likely to crest any time soon. People who wouldn’t climb on a surfboard to save their lives in the past are flocking to the sport of Stand Up Paddleboarding in droves.”

“Virtually anybody can SUP, and the learning curve is very short,” said fitness expert Rod Edmonson. “If a person can stand, they can probably learn to Stand Up Paddleboard. Plus, you’re getting an excellent full-body workout for the abdomen, back, arms and legs, as you have fun.”

SUP burns more calories than many other activities, although to the casual observer it looks calm and relaxing. Experts report that women can burn 500 to 700 calories/hour and men, 800 to 1000 calories/hour while engaged in SUP.

As with other Moab Adventure Center activities, if the Stand Up Paddleboard tour is booked in tandem with a minimum of two other MAC programs there’s a 10 percent discount on each activity. See: http://www.moabadventurecenter.com/trips/packages/
