Surrounded by an immense red rock playground, Moab, Utah, is unlike any other place in the world. Its postcard-perfect desert is adorned with giant sandstone formations, canyon mazes, rock spires, hoodoos and fins plus thousands of natural arches. The Colorado River flows past its northern border and several national and state parks are accessible from Moab. Between the red rock wonders of Arches National Park, the incredible sandstone landscapes of Canyonlands National Park, and the cool forests of the La Sal Mountains, Moab offers endless opportunity for sight-seeing and exploration.
The town, with a resident population of just 5,000 swells to two to three times that in the popular spring to fall recreation season. Through the experts at MAC visitors can find great accommodation choices with dozens of hotels in Moab, condos, campgrounds and RV parks throughout Moab’s southwestern-style Main Street area.
Arches National Park preserves over two thousand natural sandstone arches, including the world-famous Delicate Arch, in addition to a variety of unique geological resources and formations. In some areas, faulting has exposed millions of years of geologic history. The extraordinary features of the park, including balanced rocks, fins and pinnacles, are highlighted by a striking environment of contrasting colors, landforms and textures.
Canyonlands National Park preserves a colorful landscape of sedimentary sandstones eroded into countless canyons, mesas and buttes by the Colorado River and its tributaries. the park sits in a vast basin bordered by sheer cliffs of Wingate Sandstone.
Located about 25 miles from Moab, Dead Horse Point is a popular destination for a day-trip. The central feature of the park is the spectacular vista that opens up as you stand on the edge of a 2,000 cliff overlooking Canyonlands National Park.
Along the eastern Utah border near Moab, the La Sal Mountains rise 12,721 feet above sea level. This part of the Forest provides climatic relief to the desert of the Colorado River Plateau. Narrow forest roads lead travelers to the high mountain passes, and into narrow canyons like Dark Canyon where the crystalline rock structure of the peaks is exposed for all to see or into Mill Creek where Oowah Lake sparkles as a small jewel amid spruce trees.
Bordering town, the mighty Colorado skirts Arches National Park and cuts through the heart of Canyonlands National Park. Nearby, the historic and beautiful Green River carves its serpentine path through canyons deeper than the Grand Canyon. Trips range from mild-to-wild one-day and half-day excursions to multi-day rafting vacations. The Moab Adventure Center has information, continuous big-screen videos and special pricing. Advance reservations are suggested. See: http://www.moabadventurecenter.com/trips/rafting
Moab’s celebrated “canyonlands” is a postcard-perfect desert adorned with immense sandstone formations. Here, amazing red-rock terrain has eroded into canyon mazes, arches, spires and buttes. A 4x4 vehicle is perhaps the best way for people of all ages to experience the rugged beauty of this vast back country, and the vehicle which offers the most safety, comfort and exceptional climbing ability is unquestionably the Hummer®. Moab’s must-do hike is the maze-like Fiery Furnace in Arches National Park. The hike twists and turns among contorted orange-tan fins, towers, spires and arches. Moab Adventure Center guides/naturalists lead two-hour hikes in this trackless area, pointing out hidden attractions such as Surprise and Twin Arches. Although the walk/hike is moderately strenuous in places, it can be enjoyed by anyone in reasonably good physical condition. A brief tour of the Park is provided along with the hike. See: http://www.moabadventurecenter.com/activities/hiking.php

Many cyclists first heard about Moab when word spread about the Moab Slickrock Trail which loops through an expanse of rippled, undulating sandstone resembling a frozen, orange ocean. Although the Slickrock may be the nation’s most famous fat-tire route, there are dozens of other rock-and-mountain roads and trails. Rides range from a few hours to three or four days. Even novice riders can sign up for relatively level, easy terrain. The Moab Adventure Center has several guided trips and information. See: http://www.moabadventurecenter.com/trips/biking
The sheer magnificence of the several state and national parks and monuments surrounding Moab can best be appreciated from the airborne perspective of an eagle. In just an hour or two of flight-seeing, you can experience all of Canyonlands National Park, including the sculptured, red-rock canyons of the Colorado and Green rivers. Comfortable and reliable Cessna aircraft provide window seating for each passenger. A detailed flight map and stereo headsets facilitate interpretation. See: http://www.moabadventurecenter.com/trips/flights
For those that have done it, they say it is like nothing else. The ride is smooth and tranquil in a balloon as you fly with the wind, rather than through it like fixed wing planes. With no fixed route or determined flight path, each balloon ride is a true adventure. Add to these sensations the thrill of an undulating desert floor rising and falling below you in dramatic sheer cliffs, spires, and gaping canyon country as far as the early morning light extends. See: http://www.moabadventurecenter.com/trips/hot-air-balloon-rides-moab-utah/
Venture into the Wild West with gentle cowboy-trained quarter horses. Guided by a professional wrangler, you'll explore the trails made famous by John Wayne himself. New tack and equipment will make your ride as comfortable as can be. So saddle-up and take a trek into the horizon of Moab. One of the best horseback rides can be found through Castle Creek Canyon with views of towering cliffs and famous Castle Rock. See: http://www.moabadventurecenter.com/trips/horseback

Moab, UT, Jan. 25, 2012– New for 2012 is a Moab, Utah, Ropes Course Adventure challenging individuals, families and corporate groups seeking team-building opportunities. The high ropes course is available alone or in combination with other outdoor adventure activities in the Moab, Utah region exclusively through Moab Adventure Center http://www.moabadventurecenter.com/.
Building on a growing corporate meetings market, bolstered now with the convenience of direct commercial flights into Moab, Utah, Moab Adventure Center has developed a three-day / two-night Moab Corporate Retreat adventure package including accommodations at Red Cliffs Ranch, dinners, wine tastings, breakfasts, a morning high ropes course emphasizing team building and bonding, a scenic off-road Hummer tour of a working cattle ranch with a cowboy-prepared cookout lunch followed by a Colorado River float trip. The package which also includes time for meetings, speakers and award ceremony is priced at $615 per person, double occupancy. See: http://www.moabadventurecenter.com/groups/business.php
Brandon Lake, co-founder of Moab Adventure Center, anticipates that the new Moab high ropes challenge course will draw meeting planners from around the West looking for group team building activities based in the easy-to-reach Moab area.
According to Lake, “In about three hours, you can run the high ropes course, a network of ropes connected to 40-foot-high towers secured by heavy-duty bolts and cables. The payoff is having fun while building trust, confidence and communication. Professional facilitators guide guests through each station along the challenge course including a state-of-the-art climbing tower and the popular giant swing.” See: http://www.moabadventurecenter.com/trips/ropes-course-moab-utah/
Lake says it combines elements of a uniquely crafted climbing wall with an ascent up a massive cargo net, walking on a 25-foot balance beam or riding a skateboard zip line, all 40 feet off the ground.
“The most talked-about challenge on this course is the Giant Swing! Strapped into a harness, helmet buckled tight, you launch from atop the platform and blast through the air on the largest fixed swing Southern Utah’s ever seen! The staff is experienced and trained to provide maximum safety while keeping the adrenaline levels high,” he promises, adding that staff will help guests reach their potential while “creating a supportive atmosphere where each individual’s choices and decisions are respected and honored.”
Rates for just the three-hour course alone, including extensive pre-training are $65 for ages 14 and up and $55 for ages 10 to 13. Group rates are also available. For more information please see: http://www.moabadventurecenter.com/trips/ropes-course-moab-utah/high-ropes-challenge-course.php.

Sets 2012 Event Date to Aid Breast Cancer Research
Moab, UT, Aug. 18, 2011– The entry fees, pledges and contributions have been counted and Utah’s Moab Adventure Center (http://www.moabadventurecenter.com/) announced the 2011 Raft for the Cure event held June 25 in Moab, Utah broke all previous records for fundraising and attendance. The summer event attracted over 385 participants, up from just over 300 in 2010 and generated more than $25,000 for the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
The daylong event included rafting the Colorado River (for ages 5 and up), a buffet lunch at Red Cliffs Lodge, a community barbecue and live music concert. The $100 adult registration fee ($85 youth ages 5-15) included a commemorative Raft for the Cure t-shirt, a rubber memory wristband, activities, meals and all river transportation.
“This year’s changes included six local rafting companies joining forces to significantly increase our capacity,” explained event organizer Brandon Lake, co-founder of the Moab Adventure Center. “We also held the post rafting event at Swanny Park in Moab this year which encouraged more local participation.”
Lake explains how the idea for a rafting fundraiser got started. “After hearing the news that one of our own employees, Betty Conner, discovered she had breast cancer, we created this event to help Betty and thousands of others who are affected by breast cancer every year. Today, Betty is a survivor. This event gives us a chance to celebrate those who have won the battle, support those who are currently fighting it, and remember others who have passed on.”
Moab Adventure Center has just announced that the date for next year’s 6thAnnual Raft for the Cure event will be June 30, 2012. The entry fee will remain the same; $100 for adults and $85 for youth 5-15. It includes river rafting on the Colorado, transportation to/from river, equipment, lunch, concert, T-shirt and wrist band.
For a video of the 2011 event, information and registration go to www.raftforthecure.com. A Facebook page has also been created to keep friends and followers posted on news and events: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Raft-for-the-Cure/127775017253053

Moab, UT, July 7, 2011– Make sure you’re in a world-class region for adventurous living; fill in the blanks with visitor services and satisfying food / lodging options; hope for a little help from Hollywood and the result, says Utah’s Moab Adventure Center http://www.moabadventurecenter.com/, is a 2011 business surge that may better 2010 numbers by 15 percent at season’s end.
“It's fun to be a part of the energy and excitement happening around Moab this year. We are thrilled by the overwhelming increase we have seen, not just at the Moab Adventure Center, but throughout the entire community,” says Jamie Pearce, manager, Moab Adventure Center. She predicted that the company would serve over 31,000 visitors this year.
Many sign up for the 10 percent off deal when three activities are purchased together. Activities range from hot air ballooning and mountain biking to Hummer safaris, rafting and national park tours (Moab is between Arches and Canyonlands National Parks).
Brandon Lake, co-founder of Moab Adventure Center, says that an active film commission deserves much of the credit for this region’s popularity. A recent blockbuster, 127 Hours with James Franco (filmed in the area) has helped elevate Moab’s profile.
Other films made here since 1939 include John Wayne classics, City Slickers II and Mission Impossible II. The Shafer Trail under Dead Horse Point near Moab is where Thelma and Louise took their final leap into the Colorado River. Star Trek and Nurse Betty also evolved here. The 60-year-old Moab to Monument Valley Film Commission is the longest running film commission in North America.
High gas prices and word-of-mouth are bringing in locals on stay-cations. Some guests are beginning to arrive on a newly offered Las Vegas to Moab flight on Great Lakes Airlines. Lake noted that Moab is the epicenter of what’s known as the “grand circle” that Europeans especially seek out. The circle includes Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon, Arches National Park, Canyonlands National Park, and Capitol Reef National Park and Lake Powell (in Utah) as well as the Grand Canyon, Mesa Verde, and other parks and national monuments throughout the Southwestern United States, “so most people travel by car. And Moab is centrally located to benefit as a stop on all these itineraries.”

Moab, UT, Mar. 9, 2011– The West’s one-stop, multi-activity Moab Adventure Center offers a myriad of outdoor and cultural explorations into the epicenter of backcountry adventuring surrounding Moab, Utah. No longer a closely held secret getaway for fat tire enthusiasts, beginning mountain bikers too can enjoy easily accessible Native American rock art sites and mountain bike trails perfect for the first-timer.
Moab Adventure Center http://www.moabadventurecenter.com/ that has garnered the Best of State (Utah) Award for Adventure for seven consecutive years shares its Top 5 mountain bike trails for beginners along with their Top 5 favorite Native American rock art sites, many located minutes from downtown Moab.
“It doesn’t get much better than a day of mountain biking in Moab and exploring in the red rock landscapes of Arches and Canyonlands National Parks,” said Brandon Lake, co-founder of Moab Adventure Center. “Moab’s unique combination of small resort town hospitality, beautiful scenery and the cool waters of the Colorado River have made it one of the most sought after destinations in all of the southwest.”
Bikers can stop by Moab Adventure Center (MAC) for last minute supplies and directions before heading out on trails ranging from one plus to nearly 14 miles. When asked, the experts at Moab Adventure Center list the following as their Top 5 rides for beginners:
The 1.1-mile Intrepid Trail Loop in Dead Horse Point State Park is one of the few dirt single-track systems recommend for families with younger children. Another easy ride, also part of this particular loop system is the 4.2-mile Great Pyramid Loop for riders with some experience at shifting on dirt trails. The 9-mile Big Chief Loop ties the two together with a few white-knuckle challenges but most of the trail can be ridden with a single-gear bike. http://www.utahmountainbiking.com/trails/dead-horse-pt.htm
The 7.9-mile Bar M/Courthouse Loop is a fairly easy ride technically with an elevation change of about 300 feet. Many families ride this trail, including baby trailers and trail-a-bikes. http://www.moabadventurecenter.com/trips/biking/courthouse.php
The 13.5-mile Gemini Bridges Downhill is a popular warm-up ride for locals due to its dramatic scenery and long descents along a decent dirt and gravel road.

Thousands of years ago ancient peoples left their own marks on the cliffs and canyon walls of Utah. Here’s a list of the best sites found in and around Moab as recommended by the staff of Moab Adventure Center:
Look for the Potash Road petroglyph panels on blackened, sheer cliff faces along Potash Road on the north side of the Colorado River just out of town. Another close site, the Kane Creek Panels beyond the mouth of Moon Flower Canyon expose ancient figures, desert bighorn sheep and a number of abstract shapes. A short distance farther are more panels with bighorn sheep, snakes and human forms.
South on Rt. 191 toward the entrance of Canyonlands NP is Newspaper Rock, one of the finest rock art displays in the West with a 200-square-foot area of extremely dense Native American petroglyphs created by several ancient cultures beginning some 1,500 years ago. The drawings consist of animals, human figures and many inexplicable symbols.
Poison Spider Panel near the Poison Spider Mesa Trailhead and theGreat Gallery complete the Top 5. Great Gallery comes with a challenging 6.5-mile round-trip hike into Horseshoe Canyon (part of Canyonlands National Park). Here humanoid forms, some undoubtedly gods or great ones, stand 10-feet tall with animals and special symbols incorporated into their robes. http://www.discovermoab.com/rockart.htm
At the Moab Adventure Center, “We make it easy to plan a simple 2-hour off-road safari or an entire week filled with adventure, all with the assurance that you’ll have the time of your life,” said Lake.
