Why Moab?

Surrounded by an immense red rock playground, Moab, Utah, is unlike any other place in the world. Area Attractions

  • Arches National Park

Arches National Park preserves over two thousand natural sandstone arches, including the world-famous Delicate Arch, in addition to a variety of unique geological resources and formations. In some areas, faulting has exposed millions of years of geologic history. The extraordinary features of the park, including balanced rocks, fins and pinnacles, are highlighted by a striking environment of contrasting colors, landforms and textures.

  • Canyonlands National Park

Canyonlands National Park preserves a colorful landscape of sedimentary sandstones eroded into countless canyons, mesas and buttes by the Colorado River and its tributaries. the park sits in a vast basin bordered by sheer cliffs of Wingate Sandstone.

  • Dead Horse Point State Park

Located about 25 miles from Moab, Dead Horse Point is a popular destination for a day-trip. The central feature of the park is the spectacular vista that opens up as you stand on the edge of a 2,000 cliff overlooking Canyonlands National Park.

  • Manti-La Sal National Forest and Mountains

Along the eastern Utah border near Moab, the La Sal Mountains rise 12,721 feet above sea level. This part of the Forest provides climatic relief to the desert of the Colorado River Plateau. Narrow forest roads lead travelers to the high mountain passes, and into narrow canyons like Dark Canyon where the crystalline rock structure of the peaks is exposed for all to see or into Mill Creek where Oowah Lake sparkles as a small jewel amid spruce trees.

What to Do in Moab

Bordering town, the mighty Colorado skirts Arches National Park and cuts through the heart of Canyonlands National Park. Nearby, the historic and beautiful Green River carves its serpentine path through canyons deeper than the Grand Canyon. Stand-Up Paddleboarding is fast becoming one of the most popular recreational sports in the country. Now you can experience the Colorado River like never before. Moab’s must-do hike is the maze-like Fiery Furnace in Arches National Park. The hike twists and turns among contorted orange-tan fins, towers, spires and arches. Moab Adventure Center guides/naturalists lead two-hour hikes in this trackless area, pointing out hidden attractions such as Surprise and Twin Arches. Although the walk/hike is moderately strenuous in places, it can be enjoyed by anyone in reasonably good physical condition. A brief tour of the Park is provided along with the hike. Moab's legendary landscape inspires those of the vertical persuasion to climb and conquer, or drop a rope and descend into the hidden waterways that slice into the desert floor. Many cyclists first heard about Moab when word spread about the Moab Slickrock Trail which loops through an expanse of rippled, undulating sandstone resembling a frozen, orange ocean. Although the Slickrock may be the nation’s most famous fat-tire route, there are dozens of other rock-and-mountain roads and trails. Rides range from a few hours to three or four days. The sheer magnificence of the several state and national parks and monuments surrounding Moab can best be appreciated from the airborne perspective of an eagle. In just an hour or two of flight-seeing, you can experience all of Canyonlands National Park, including the sculptured, red-rock canyons of the Colorado and Green rivers. Getting to Moab

Getting to Moab is easy. Daily flights are available directly into the Canyonlands Field Airport (CNY). Car rental service is available at the Moab Airport through Enterprise Rent a Car. You can rent a jeep and have it waiting for you at the airport when you arrive. Shuttle service is also available from the airport if you do not wish to have a car. If you don't choose to fly directly to Moab, you can fly into Salt Lake City, Denver, Grand Junction or Las Vegas and drive to Moab. However you choose to get to Moab, there are plenty of services to make your trip easy and affordable.

Brandon Lake, co-founder of Moab Adventure Center, anticipates that the new Moab high ropes challenge course  will draw meeting planners from around the West looking for group team building activities based in the easy-to-reach Moab area.

According to Lake, “In about three hours, you can run the high ropes course, a network of ropes connected to 40-foot-high towers secured by heavy-duty bolts and cables. The payoff is having fun while building trust, confidence and communication. Lake says it combines elements of a uniquely crafted climbing wall with an ascent up a massive cargo net, walking on a 25-foot balance beam or riding a skateboard zip line, all 40 feet off the ground.

“The most talked-about challenge on this course is the Giant Swing! Strapped into a harness, helmet buckled tight, you launch from atop the platform and blast through the air on the largest fixed swing Southern Utah’s ever seen! The staff is experienced and trained to provide maximum safety while keeping the adrenaline levels high,” he promises, adding that staff will help guests reach their potential while “creating a supportive atmosphere where each individual’s choices and decisions are respected and honored.”

Moab Adventure Center Encourages Couples To Be Smitten with River and Red Rock Adventures on a “Fall in Love with Moab” Getaway

Sets 2012 Event Date to Aid Breast Cancer Research 

Moab, UT, Aug. 18, 2011– The entry fees, pledges and contributions have been counted and Utah’s Moab Adventure Center (http://www.moabadventurecenter.com/) announced the 2011 Raft for the Cure event held June 25 in Moab, Utah broke all previous records for fundraising and attendance. The summer event attracted over 385 participants, up from just over 300 in 2010 and generated more than $25,000 for the Susan G. Komen Foundation. 

The daylong event included rafting the Colorado River (for ages 5 and up), a buffet lunch at Red Cliffs Lodge, a community barbecue and live music concert. The $100 adult registration fee ($85 youth ages 5-15) included a commemorative Raft for the Cure t-shirt, a rubber memory wristband, activities, meals and all river transportation. 

“This year’s changes included six local rafting companies joining forces to significantly increase our capacity,” explained event organizer Brandon Lake, co-founder of the Moab Adventure Center. “We also held the post rafting event at Swanny Park in Moab this year which encouraged more local participation.” 

Lake explains how the idea for a rafting fundraiser got started. “After hearing the news that one of our own employees, Betty Conner, discovered she had breast cancer, we created this event to help Betty and thousands of others who are affected by breast cancer every year. Today, Betty is a survivor. This event gives us a chance to celebrate those who have won the battle, support those who are currently fighting it, and remember others who have passed on.” 

Moab Adventure Center has just announced that the date for next year’s 6thAnnual Raft for the Cure event will be June 30, 2012. The entry fee will remain the same; $100 for adults and $85 for youth 5-15. It includes river rafting on the Colorado, transportation to/from river, equipment, lunch, concert, T-shirt and wrist band.

Moab Adventure Center Sees Surge in Business: Projects 2011 Season Bookings 15 Percent Over 2010

Moab, UT, July 7, 2011– Make sure you’re in a world-class region for adventurous living; fill in the blanks with visitor services and satisfying food / lodging options; hope for a little help from Hollywood and the result, says Utah’s Moab Adventure Center http://www.moabadventurecenter.com/, is a 2011 business surge that may better 2010 numbers by 15 percent at season’s end. 

“It's fun to be a part of the energy and excitement happening around Moab this year. We are thrilled by the overwhelming increase we have seen, not just at the Moab Adventure Center, but throughout the entire community,” says Jamie Pearce, manager, Moab Adventure Center. She predicted that the company would serve over 31,000 visitors this year. 

Many sign up for the 10 percent off deal when three activities are purchased together. Activities range from hot air ballooning and mountain biking to Hummer safaris, rafting and national park tours (Moab is between Arches and Canyonlands National Parks). 

Brandon Lake, co-founder of Moab Adventure Center, says that an active film commission deserves much of the credit for this region’s popularity.  A recent blockbuster, 127 Hours with James Franco (filmed in the area) has helped elevate Moab’s profile. 

Other films made here since 1939 include John Wayne classics, City Slickers II and Mission Impossible II. The Shafer Trail under Dead Horse Point near Moab is where Thelma and Louise took their final leap into the Colorado River. Star Trek and Nurse Betty also evolved here. The 60-year-old Moab to Monument Valley Film Commission is the longest running film commission in North America. 

High gas prices and word-of-mouth are bringing in locals on stay-cations. Some guests are beginning to arrive on a newly offered Las Vegas to Moab flight on Great Lakes Airlines. Lake noted that Moab is the epicenter of what’s known as the “grand circle” that Europeans especially seek out. The circle includes Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon, Arches National Park, Canyonlands National Park, and Capitol Reef National Park and Lake Powell (in Utah) as well as the Grand Canyon, Mesa Verde, and other parks and national monuments throughout the Southwestern United States, “so most people travel by car. And Moab is centrally located to benefit as a stop on all these itineraries.”

Full Day of River Rafting and Evening Events Including Dinner and Live Concert to Benefit Breast Cancer Research 

Moab, UT, April 15, 2011 – Utah’s Moab Adventure Center hosts the 5thannual Raft for the Cure http://www.raftforthecure.com/ from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. June 25, 2011, on the Colorado River in Moab, UT, with an anticipated 500 participants who will ride the river to raise money for the fight against breast cancer. Monies are received by Susan G. Komen for the Cure in Salt Lake City, UT. 

Last year’s event attracted 330 participants from Utah, Colorado, and elsewhere and raised over $20,000.  This year six rafting companies in the Moab community will be joining forces to accommodate up to 500 guests.

Lake pointed out that the Moab Adventure Center hopes to continue to raise funds for Breast Cancer research while hosting this annual event. He says that more outfitters and local community businesses will be joining the event this year as “demand to be part of this important fundraiser has increased significantly.” 

Participants check-in from 3 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. the day before (June 24) at the Moab Adventure Center located in downtown Moab (225 S. Main Street, Moab, UT 84532).On-river activities for ages 5 and up run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 25 including a buffet lunch at Red Cliffs Lodge on the banks of the Colorado River. At 6 p.m. that evening, dinner and a live music concert concludes the weekend event.  Dinner is included for participants and available for purchase to the general public. “We’re hoping to have a great turnout of Moab locals this year as we host the evening events at the city park,” said Lake. 

The $100 adult registration fee ($85 youth ages 5-15) includes a commemorative Raft for the Cure t-shirt, a rubber memory wristband, a full-day of rafting with class I-III rapids, buffet lunch, round trip transportation from Moab Adventure Center, and the live concert and dinner.

Look for the Potash Road petroglyph panels on blackened, sheer cliff faces along Potash Road on the north side of the Colorado River just out of town. A short distance farther are more panels with bighorn sheep, snakes and human forms. 

South on Rt. 191 toward the entrance of Canyonlands NP is Newspaper Rock,one of the finest rock art displays in the West with a 200-square-foot area of extremely dense Native American petroglyphs created by several ancient cultures beginning some 1,500 years ago. The drawings consist of animals, human figures and many inexplicable symbols. 

Poison Spider Panel near the Poison Spider Mesa Trailhead and theGreat Gallery complete the Top 5. Great Gallery comes with a challenging 6.5-mile round-trip hike into Horseshoe Canyon (part of Canyonlands National Park). Moab Adventure Center Reports Banner Summer; Expects Great Fall Climate and Trip Specials to Produce Equally Strong Autumn

Moab, UT, Sept. 1, 2010 – The one-stop, multi-activity Moab Adventure Center http://www.moabadventurecenter.com/ reports that its 2010 summer has gone gang busters and it anticipates record increases this fall as well.

 
Brandon Lake, co-founder of Moab Adventure Center, reports that compared to summer 2009 this year’s multi-day trips and day trips are up 16 percent and 15 percent respectively. Its Cataract Canyon raft trips are up 26 percent, thanks in part to increased visibility and also because its Grand Canyon raft adventures filled up early this year. Water-based activities are up nearly 5 percent and land-based activities are up nearly 31 percent.
 
“People stayed closer to home this year and did more domestic adventure travel,” said Lake. He added that for multi-day trips there is a 13 percent increase in drive-in traffic over 2009.
 
Lake expects equally strong results for the quieter months of September and October. He said this time is ideal weather-wise for indulging in adventures that maximize the spirit of this iconic canyonlands region also while saving 16 percent over summer rates. For example, the Ultimate Moab Adventure combines five popular activities for the full Moab experience; Colorado River rafting, horseback riding, guided mountain biking, a Hummer safari and Arches National Park sunset tour. The fall special is $320 for adults 16 and over; $268 for under 16. The same discount applies to additional activities that may be added and/or substituted.
 
Autumn in and around Moab is also high season for cultural events. The Moab Music Festival throughout most of September presents “Music in Concert with the Landscape” set in the spectacular landscape of the Utah Canyonlands region. In early October the Moab Plein Air Festival gathers artists to the region.
 
Three cycling events are held in September and October: Moab Century Tour takes in the canyons with proceeds going to cancer survivorship programs. Full Day of Colorado River Rafting, Evening BBQ, Local Music Concert, Raffle and Auction to Benefit the Fight against Breast Cancer

 
Moab, UT, May 17, 2010 – Moab Adventure Center hosts the 3rd annual Raft for the Cure  http://www.raftforthecure.com/ on June 26, 2010. During last year’s event, the center donated over $12,000 to Susan G. Komen for the Cure – Salt Lake City for breast cancer research. hosts its 3rd annual Raft for the Cure
 
Brandon Lake, co-founder of Moab Adventure Center http://www.moabadventurecenter.com/ explains the history behind the event. “A few years ago, Betty Conner, one of our reservationists discovered she had breast cancer. Betty had been with us for over 15 years and we were all personally touched by her heroic battle. Today she is a survivor. From that experience, Raft for the Cure was born. We now join with her and hundreds of others in a tribute to those millions who have been affected by breast cancer and to find a cure.”
 
The event includes mild white water rafting on the Colorado River, a complete riverside buffet lunch at Red Cliffs Lodge, an evening BBQ, and live concert at the Moab Adventure Center. Participants also receive a commemorative T-shirt and transportation to/from the river. Proceeds are donated to Susan G. Komen for the Cure Salt Lake City.
 
Registration for the event is $100 for adults 16 and up and $85 for youth 5-15. The raft adventure includes running the rapids of Onion Creek, Cloudburst, Ida Gulch, and the famous Whites Rapid.   Space is limited so reservations should be made soon.
 
Non-rafters may also register for off-river activities only; $15 for the dinner and concert, $15 for the commemorative T-shirt, or $27 combined.
 
“This event, now in its third year, is enjoyed by hundreds of people from all over the country. It’s not only one of the most fun events of the year, it’s also emotional, liberating and all for a very worthy cause,” said Lake.

Moab Adventure Center Introduces a First - Hot Air Ballooning Over the Red Rock Desert Playground of Moab, Utah

Moab, UT, May 6, 2010 - Moab Adventure Center creates diverse opportunities to explore a red rock playground that borders both Arches and Canyonlands National Parks. Now, for the first time this spring visitors can soar above it all in a hot air balloon.
 
It’s obvious why Hollywood chooses this set for westerns and contemporary movies,” said Brandon Lake, Co-Founder of Moab Adventure Center. “It’s truly one of the natural wonders of the world.”  Sights include the rugged red rock canyons carved by the Colorado River, fanciful rock towers and arches and often such wildlife as desert big horn sheep, mountain lion, pronghorn antelope and bald and golden eagles.
 
Hour-long balloon flights  that begin at sunrise with set-up and launch give passengers a bird’s-eye view of multi-colored sandstone formations, mesas, buttes, deep canyon mazes and natural arches. Rates are $235 for adults and $195 for youth age six and up. 
 
Lou Bartell who owns and pilots the six-passenger balloon explains how he showcases this region.
 
“I enjoy contour or close-to-the-ground flying. This gives a very unique perspective of the landscape.  The sensation of climbing over a sandstone butte then watching the ground drop hundreds of feet below you can only be compared to rock climbing.  The biggest difference with a flight in Moab to anywhere else is that you are actually a part of the landscape, not just an observer.  Conditions permitting, I also like to fly up to 4,000 feet above the valley floor to give everyone an overview of the entire area.”
 
Bartell assures his guests that credentials for hot air balloon pilots are similar to those for manning fixed wing and rotor-wing aircraft. Pilots must complete a private and commercial ground school and hours of practical training. Bartell maintains a class 2 FAA flight physical for his commercial and instructor ratings. The balloon is a commercially registered FAA aircraft requiring 100 hours of inspections annually. All repairs and maintenance must be performed by a certified FAA repairman with an FAA repair station license.
 
The rate includes the flight itself, return transportation to the launch site, a post-flight toast ceremony and digital on-ground and in-air photos (upon request). Moab hot air balloon rides can be combined with two other Moab Adventure Center activities for a 10 percent savings on each.
