Poseidon Expeditions Offers Family Rate Incentives For Arctic Cruise Reservations

PROVIDENCE, RI, July 25, 2019 – Families can now introduce children to the wonders of the polar ice cap with rate incentives for Arctic cruises on new bookings made by October 31, 2019, aboard Poseidon Expeditions’ Sea Spirit.

Think Norway and the North Pole. Somewhere in between is the Svalbard Archipelago, a High Arctic wilderness that polar bear, reindeer and walrus call home.

The 114-guest Sea Spirit will conduct five 2020 Arctic Wildlife Safaris into this region. Children under age 12 travel at half of the regular per person price in a double-occupancy cabin with an adult. Poseidon Expeditions Starts 2019 Season Of North Pole Voyages Aboard Nuclear-Powered 50 Years of Victory

PROVIDENCE, RI, July 8, 2019-- This week as Poseidon Expeditions commences another sold-out season of voyages from Murmansk, Russia to the geographic North Pole, the company announces that reservations are now open for three departures during the summer of 2020.

“Since our first voyage in 2001, we’ve had the great pleasure of providing more than 4,300 guests from all over the globe the singular opportunity to stand at the North Pole,” said Nikolay Saveliev, president of Poseidon Expeditions. “That’s 42 departures to-date that we’ve operated through the summer of 2018, with 2019 the 12^th consecutive season aboard the world’s most powerful icebreaker, the nuclear-powered 50 Years of Victory.” (Before 2008, North Pole programs were operated aboard the similar Arktika-class Yamal.)

Poseidon Expeditions plans to operate three trips to 90º north latitude at the height of the 2020 summer season: July 12, July 23 and Aug. 3. The 13-day program includes a full day of activities on the ice at the North Pole, plus Zodiac landings on Franz Josef Land, an infrequently visited region of 192 islands rich in polar wildlife and stark landscapes in the Russian High Arctic. Rates for the 2020 season – including the early booking savings that are in effect through Oct. 31, 2019 – range from US$29,445 per person for Standard Stateroom to US$42,840 for the 33-square-meter Arktika Suite.

“Human experience as well as the right vessel for the task both play an all-important role in making such a trip successful. So we are pleased that Captain Dmitriy Lobusov will again be at the helm of 50 Years of Victory for the 2019 season,” continued Saveliev.

“Captain Lobusov has worked in the Arctic ice for more than 30 years and participated in North Pole trips for a quarter century, serving as master for more than 100 of them. The technical management of a 23,439-GT vessel, which can break ice up to three meters in thickness, is considerably more than following a compass heading to 90º north latitude through the frozen Arctic Ocean. Significant pressure ridges along the way can pose challenges, even for a ship with 75,000 horsepower, two OK-900A nuclear reactors and a pair of robust steam turbo-generators.

“No other ice-class vessel used for commercial passenger travel has the proven track record, the reliability and sheer power to muscle its way to this unique destination. Where the frozen sea blocks the way for other ice-class expedition ships, the adventure is just beginning aboard 50 Years of Victory. When not used for North Pole tourism, this vessel can be found supporting and clearing the way through the ice for cargo and energy supply vessels in the Russian High Arctic,” said Saveliev.

Experience will also benefit the passengers’ educational enrichment while aboard and ashore in Franz Josef Land. Creating an unforgettable experience will be the task of Poseidon’s 14-member expedition staff, which includes a marine biologist, geologist, glaciologist, historian, geographer, Zodiac master, visual artist, Citizen Science organizer and musician. Leading the team will be Huw Lewis-Jones, historian, author and former curator of art at the Scott Polar Research Institute, University of Cambridge. He is an authority on Arctic and Antarctic exploration, portraiture, print culture and the history of photography in the polar regions.

If living the adventure of travel to the North Pole itself isn’t enough, guests on the July 29, 2019, departure will enjoy learning about the exploits of Guest Lecturer Fyodor Konyukhov, internationally known aerial and marine explorer, mountaineer and artist. He is the first Russian climber to have completed the Seven Summits, conquering the highest mountains on each of the seven continents. He completed a solo circumnavigation of Antarctica in 102 days by sailboat in 2008, crossed the Atlantic Ocean in a rowboat in 46 days and the Pacific Ocean by rowboat in just 162 days. And in 2016, he became only the second person to circumnavigate the world in a balloon.

In addition to the regular program of enrichment, guests during the 2019 and 2020 seasons will enjoy Zodiac cruises ashore in Franz Josef Land and other special events and activities at the North Pole and in transit. Poseidon Expeditions Follows Solar Eclipse in Fall of 2021 on 23-Day Voyage to Antarctica

PROVIDENCE, RI, June 25, 2019 – On the morning of Dec. 4, 2021, passengers and crew aboard the M/v Sea Spirit, Poseidon Expeditions’ 114-guest polar expedition ship, will be on deck as a solar eclipse plummets Antarctica into sudden darkness.

This event occurs on Day 14 of a 23-day voyage that departs the world’s southernmost city, Ushuaia, Argentina, on Nov. 20 and returns there on Dec. 12 after firmly fixing in memory place names from history books – South Georgia, the Falkland Islands and the Antarctic Peninsula itself. The per person rates are from $16,556 (triple occupancy) and $21,866 (double occupancy).

The complexities of the world’s oceans are also a focus of the itinerary Solar Eclipse in Antarctica as Sea Spirit moves south through Drake’s Passage and crosses what’s known as the Antarctic Convergence, a biological ring around Antarctica marking where warmer sub Antarctic waters meet the colder waters of the Antarctic flowing north.

From this convergence into waters that become the Scotia Sea, and surrounded by the miracle that is the marine life of South Georgia, the captain will navigate Sea Spirit precisely onto the narrow path of totality, the relatively small area from which one can see the sun’s light become totally obscured by the moon, at the precise time of the predicted solar eclipse.

“Our goal is to meet the center of the moon’s shadow as it moves swiftly across the Scotia Sea during its rare and brief appearance in Antarctica. This may well bring the ship within sight of the Weddell Sea pack ice, adding a great polar ambiance to this amazing celestial event. With the advantage of sophisticated charts and meteorological forecasts -- and a little luck -- we will gather on deck in the early morning of Friday, Dec. 4, under hopefully clear skies, to observe a total eclipse of the Antarctic sun in the most pristine wilderness on Earth,” said Nikolay Saveliev, president of Poseidon Expeditions.

The eclipse will be viewed near the islands of South Georgia, a scenic wilderness and an unrivaled paradise for sub-Antarctic wildlife viewing. The islands are said to host upwards of 100 million seabirds, including numerous species of albatross, penguins, prions, petrels and terns. On beaches such as those at Salisbury Plain and St. Andrews Bay, over 100,000 elephant seals and three million fur seals jostle for space among innumerable stately king and sprightly macaroni penguins. An increasing number of whales are in surrounding waters.

The exploration of South Georgia comes after transiting the Beagle Channel and passing the islands of Tierra del Fuego with a lookout for dolphins and whales enroute to the Falkland Islands, a birders’ paradise. Think colonies of penguins and albatross and Peale’s and Commerson’s dolphins, fur and elephant seals.

For some passengers the eclipse will be the expedition’s highlight. However, the ongoing adventure into the Antarctic Peninsula region may leave others in awe over some of the world’s most impressive scenery, including icebergs of every size and description, and Antarctica’s best wildlife viewing. Waters rich with krill are home to a variety of whale and seal species. Penguins form large nesting colonies on land.

The South Shetland Islands, the northernmost islands in Antarctica, afford numerous landing sites with abundant wildlife and historical significance. Among them is Elephant Island, where men from Shackleton’s famous Endurance expedition spent the winter.

Farther south, on the Antarctic Peninsula, the gorgeous Gerlache Strait area contains sheltered bays, accessible wildlife and stunning scenery. The famous Lemaire Channel is also known as “Kodak Gap” because of the photogenic way the mountainous sides of the narrow channel are reflected in calm, iceberg-strewn waters.

Complementing the strong credentials of Poseidon’s team of marine biology, history, geology and ornithology specialists will be Paul M. Sutter, astrophysicist, author, speaker, producer and on-air host. He studies the earliest moments of the Big Bang, the emptiest places in the universe, and novel methods for detecting the first stars. New, State-of-Art Stabilizers Enhance Guest Comfort and Ship Stability On Poseidon Expeditions’ Sea Spirit

PROVIDENCE, RI, June 12, 2019 – Poseidon Expedition’s 114-passenger vessel Sea Spirit embarked earlier this month on a series of summer adventure cruises of the Arctic retooled with new stabilizers installed in late April while in dry dock in Portugal.

Sea Spirit guests booked on a polar adventure to the Arctic this summer or to Antarctica this fall or winter may not be aware of this advanced technology applied to the 4,200-GRT vessel. Sea Spirit has been retrofitted with Rolls Royce Zero Speed Stabilizers that allow safe, stable navigation through icy waters of the Greenland and Barents seas.

The operational benefits of the new retractable fin stabilizers include:

Reducing the ship’s roll when anchored, moored or drifting;
Reducing dynamic drag when deployed while underway;
Eliminating vibration and noise.

“The new system uses a computer-based programmable logic controller (PLC) that develops different algorithms depending on conditions. The result will be a ride for our passengers as comfortable as aboard any new expedition ship currently coming into the market,” said Poseidon Expeditions’ Senior Director of Cruise Operations Nikolay Zakharov. “At the same time, they look to the future with safeguards to protect the polar ecosystems. The stabilizers are fully compatible with environmentally acceptable lubricants (EAL) and feature quad main seals for additional redundancy.”

This new design, when fully housed into the customized fin box, results in no protrusions from the hull form and reduces the ship’s roll. The stabilizer fin also incorporates the tested optimized trailing edge designed to eliminate vibration and noise.

The new reduced fin area and optimized lower fin angle meet performance requirements even as they help reduce operating costs by decreasing the amount of fuel needed. Using less fuel also assists environmental goals. With the environment in mind, the stabilizer machinery is fully compatible with an extensive list of Environmental Acceptable Lubricants (EAL) for Simplex Stern Tube Brushes and Seals that are available worldwide and incorporate a quad seal arrangement for additional integrity of sealing.

Sea Spirithas also been re-certified for new IMO Polar Code requirements. Currently, the vessel has all valid technical and international certificates complying with IMO conventions to provide tourism activities in polar waters. Polar Cruise Expert Poseidon Expeditions Fills Two New Management Positions

PROVIDENCE, RI, April 17, 2019– Poseidon Expeditions, a leading provider of cruise adventures in Antarctica and the Arctic, filled two newly created management positions on April 1. Ms. Anja Erdmann was named the company’s director of expedition operations/human resources, and Ms. Jennifer Kunath became Poseidon’s North American sales director.

Promoted to the new position of director of expedition operations/human resources, Anja Erdmann will assume many of the duties related to staffing Poseidon’s vessels with top-notch expedition staff and guest lecturers, finding and training new talent, as well as team scheduling, and contractual issues. She will also continue in her role as company representative to both AECO (Association of Arctic Expedition Cruise Operators) and IAATO (International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators).

Erdmann came to Poseidon in 2015 from Hurtigruten, where she had served as a project manager and expedition leader since 2006. She has a degree in tourism management from Harz University of Applied Studies and Research in Wernigerode, Germany. She is based near Berlin, Germany.

YouTube Videos Help Poseidon Expeditions Convey Fragile Beauty of Polar Arctic

While on a cruise to the North Pole, the first in the video series features Don Perovich, a geophysicist whose specialty is the Arctic sea ice cover. This climate change scientist created the Ice Mass Balance Buoy that measures ice thickness and temperature data over time. The central goal of his research is to understand the interaction of sunlight with sea ice. He uses this data to study the changes in Arctic sea ice cover. As he explains on camera, his work measures the depth, water temperatures and salinity of melt ponds in the ice. Information is assimilated into models to help improve predictions about the future of sea ice.

Perovich is a professor of engineering at Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH and a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union. He has received the Department of the Army Meritorious Civilian Service Award, the National Science Foundation Arctic Service Award, the Coast Guard Arctic Service Medal, and the Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory lifetime achievement award. Poseidon Expeditions Announces Rates for 2020 and 2021 Arctic and Antarctic Cruises

PROVIDENCE, RI, Jan. 9, 2019 – One hardy polar expedition ship, Sea Spirit, will carry visitors for the sixth consecutive year to both the Arctic and Antarctic in 2020 and 2021 under the auspices of Poseidon Expeditions, a specialist in active adventure cruises in the high latitudes.

The company has just released the cruise schedule and rates for all of Sea Spirit’s 2020 Arctic and for late 2020 and early 2021 Antarctic departures. Early booking discounts of 10 to 15 percent, depending on cabin categories selected aboard the 114-guest expedition ship, will be in effect for reservations made by July 31, 2019 on all departures.

Poseidon Expeditions Founder and President Nikolay Saveliev said, “We’re extremely pleased with the reception of the Sea Spirit since she entered service under the Poseidon banner in May 2015. In 2020, it will be our sixth year of operating this vessel, and her popularity has only increased during this time among our travel partners, agencies and passengers. New destinations and additional departures of favorite journeys that were added to the 2019 and 2020 seasons will continue into 2020 and 2021. Rates quoted below are per person, double occupancy, and reflect early booking discounts. Even lower triple-share rates, for families or single travelers, are available on all departures.

2020 Arctic

West Spitsbergen and the Polar Ice Edge– Five departures of Poseidon’s most popular Arctic cruise, ranging from 9-12 days and all roundtrip from Longyearbyen, Svalbard, are offered between May 31 and June 30, 2020, with rates starting at just $7,286.
Arctic Odyssey: Spitsbergen, Greenland and Iceland– One of the company’s most in-demand voyages, a two-week cruise from Longyearbyen to Reykjavik, Iceland, takes place Aug.25-Sept.7, 2020, with rates from $10,976.
Franz Josef Land Archipelago– Poseidon’s signature program in the Russian High Arctic and the only cruise of its kind to operate roundtrip from Longyearbyen will include three 14-day departures, July 20, Aug.1 and Aug. 13, 2020, with rates from $12,506.
East Greenland: Arctic Sights and Northern Lights– The summer season concludes with two popular, aurora borealis-focused, 11-day journeys to East Greenland, roundtrip from Reykjavik, Iceland, departing Sept. 6 and 15, 2020 with rates from $7,826.

And returning again in 2020 will be two single-departure itineraries that take advantage of Sea Spirit springtime repositioning from Antarctica to the northern climes. These are the May 8, 2020, British Isles: Legendary History and Wild Nature discovery cruise, 13 days from Plymouth, England, to Edinburgh, Scotland, starting at $7,466; and the May 21, 2020, From the Highlands to the High Arctic: Crossing the Arctic Circle, Jan Mayen and Spitsbergen, a 12-day journey from Edinburgh to Longyearbyen starting at $5,936.

2020-21 Antarctica

Six Antarctic Peninsula departures will be offered aboard Sea Spirit, either 11 or 12 days in length, all roundtrip from Ushuaia: Nov. 29, Dec. 8, Dec. 18 Holiday cruise, Dec. 27 New Year’s cruise, Feb. 7, Feb. 17. Rates start at $8,906.
Four Antarctica, South Georgia and Falkland Islands/Malvinas cruises, ranging in length from 21 to 24 days, are offered: Oct. 19, Nov. 10, Jan. 6 and Feb. 27, with rates from $15,476. Embarkation and disembarkation ports vary from Montevideo or Ushuaia, depending on the voyage.
The popular Antarctic Circle: Crossing 66º South Latitude cruise will again be offered Jan. 25, 2021, a 15-day journey, roundtrip from Ushuaia, starting at just $14,216.

Poseidon Expeditions Doubles Arctic Cruises In September 2019 to Ensure Prime Viewing of Northern Lights

The Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) are a bucket-list phenomenon that transforms the Arctic sky with dancing, rainbow-hued ribbons. However, visitors to the region in the summer months may have difficulty seeing a performance because with the sun constantly above the horizon, the sky is too bright. Near the autumnal equinox and as more solar particles interact with the atmosphere and the nights grow longer, the colors explode. This makes September a prime viewing month. The good news is that Arctic temperatures aren't yet as frigid as they are from January to March when, yes, the skies are dark but temperatures and weather conditions are inhospitable above the Arctic Circle.

Areas within the Arctic Circle at 66º North (65th parallel) have the best viewing possibilities. Those living in areas with low light pollution at 55º North (55th parallel) can also glimpse this beauty. On rare occasions New Englanders on the 45th parallel can get flashes of color as well.

As visitors come and go from Reykjavik (on the 64th parallel), and if the skies are dark enough, the Northern Lights may well play for them. But it’s on these September cruises that the magic occurs. Guests cross the Denmark Strait to a true Arctic wilderness, Scoresby Sund in East Greenland, crossing the Arctic Circle on the way.

Scoresby Sund, with some of the Arctic’s most impressive scenery, is the largest and longest fjord system in the world. Deep fjords and narrow channels that are flanked by ice-clad peaks up to 2000 meters high reach deep into the mountainous heart of Greenland. Tidewater glaciers create colossal icebergs that float with wind and tide throughout the fjord system. On shore fields of multicolored tundra are home to musk oxen and Arctic hare. Prince Albert II of Monaco Opens “Polar Planet” Featuring Exquisite Photography in a Collaboration Between Filip Kulisev and Poseidon Expeditions

PROVIDENCE, RI, Oct. 9, 2018 – The results of a two-year collaboration between polar region cruise specialist Poseidon Expeditions and a world-renowned photographer, Filip Kulisev, are on display presently in Monaco at Galerie des Pêcheurs.

Prince Albert II of Monaco opened the exhibit, Polar Planet, on Oct. 2. It is scheduled to run 24 hours daily through Nov. 15, 2018. Admission is free to the public.

This is the third time that Filip Kulisev has been honored with an exhibit in Monaco. His large-scale photographs highlight the beauty and some of the most spectacular sites and wildlife of both the Arctic and Antarctic. The exhibit continues many years of cooperation between Kulisev and the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, which has three priority objectives: to limit climate change, to safeguard biodiversity and to manage water resources.

In his introduction, Prince Albert noted that Kulisev “has such a way, not only rendering species beautiful and attractive, but also depicting incredible places on our planet. His images make you want to go there for a visit. He is also incredibly skilled at capturing the very special kind of light in the polar regions.”

Nikolay Saveliev, president and founder of Poseidon Expeditions, said that the partnership between Kulisev and Poseidon – occurring over the course of more than a dozen voyages including the North Pole – has been rewarding for everyone. “Our guests were thrilled to witness Filip hard at work and saw his resulting images before anyone else in special presentations at the conclusion of each voyage. We all have great memories as well as breathtakingly beautiful photographs of our time together.”

In the 15 years that Kulisev has been traveling to both the Arctic and Antarctica, his images over that period visibly demonstrate the effects of climate change. Glaciers are shrinking and many species are losing their natural habitat.

Kulisev said that despite harsh conditions and cold weather he finds it fascinating to be able to photograph hundreds of thousands of penguins in one place on South Georgia and polar bears floating on icebergs searching for food. “There is so much to admire in the varied landscapes and fauna of Antarctica, South Georgia, the Falkland Islands, Svalbard, Iceland, Franz Josef Land and Greenland. This exhibit is my tribute to Albert II, whom I greatly appreciate for his many good works to save the oceans and persuade politicians to take measures to moderate the effects of the global warming," said Kulisev.

The opening was attended by many distinguished guests from Monaco, Russia, USA, Switzerland, Norway, Germany, Japan and Slovakia, the photographer’s home country. It is planned that the exhibition will travel to other major metropolitan centers in Europe, to be announced, over the course of the next two years.

In the past decade, world traveler and photographer Filip Kulisev has been recognized as one of the world’s best landscape photographers. He has had over 200 exhibitions in Slovakia and around the world. He is the author of nine books recording the diversity and beauty of the world's natural wonders and the stories from his trips. He has received the two highest European qualifications, Master Qualified European Photographer (MQEP) in Landscape and the British Institute of Professional Photographers (FBIPP) highest title, Fellow. He is an avid naturalist who supports activities aimed at protecting the environment for future generations.
