The ship’s expedition staff-to-passenger ratio of 1:9 is one of the best in the business.

I/B 50 Years of Victory, the largest and most modern nuclear-powered icebreaker in the world, transports guests to the North Pole in unique style. Fourteen-day, top-of-the-world programs are scheduled for the 2016, 2017 and 2018 summer seasons. The 525-foot 50 Years of Victory, a working vessel, carries 128 passengers in comfortable accommodations, all with exterior views and private facilities. Environmental Promise

As a member in good standing of both the Association of Arctic Expedition Cruise Operators (AECO) and the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO), Poseidon Expeditions pledges its commitment to the further development of Arctic and Antarctic conservation and support of related scientific research.

They actively encourage participation in their expeditions by naturalists and scientists engaged in such research, offering a platform from which they can pursue their important work as well as a forum where they can voice their unique understanding of these fragile and remote ecosystems. Preservation of the Arctic and Antarctic habitats and the polar ice cap are environmental imperatives and the responsibility of all, including tourism operators and their guests. Poseidon Expeditions is honored to be a part of this, and to help passengers understand the importance of preserving Polar Regions for future generations.

International Family of Polar Explorers

What sets Poseidon Expeditions apart from many other cruise operations is its ability to attract an international mixture of cruise participants. Guests come from China,Russia, Europe, North America, Australia and elsewhere. While English is the primary language spoken by expedition leaders and staff, Poseidon offers a QuietVox in-ear translation system for non-English-speaking passengers (e.g. German, Russian, Chinese, Japanese, French, and Swedish). Since the Polar Regions truly hold international status belonging to the world community, it is only fitting that travelers should arrive there with fellow expeditioners from all corners of the globe.

Single Travelers

Poseidon Expeditions will arrange same-gender shares for single travelers who can book at the lowest fare in the triples, or in double-occupancy cabins at the regular per person cost. Single occupancy of cabins is also available for a surcharge.

Birthing Icebergs, Inuit Culture and Dramatic Seascapes Take Center Stage in May on Poseidon Expeditions’ West Greenland: Disko Bay Cruise

PROVIDENCE, RI, Oct. 24, 2016 Spring signifies the birthing season. The Arctic is no exception where in May on Greenland’s west coast, even those icons of the frozen north – icebergs -- calve.

For early summer 2017, Poseidon Expeditions (http://poseidonexpeditions.com/), which focuses on polar cruise adventures north and south, is restaging last summer’s popular adventure to provide a more in-depth, focused look at what they call the “glistening gem of West Greenland – Disko Bay.” The voyage is called Disko Bay and West Greenland: Birthplace of Icebergs. This is a 9-day voyage from May 22-30, 2017, aboard the 114-passenger expedition ship M/V Sea Spirit with rates starting at $3,995 per person. Guests board the ship in Nuuk, this country’s 16,000-population capital, and disembark in Kangerlussuaq, the airline arrival/departure city. Included in the cruise rate is the flight from Kangerlussuaq’s international airport to Nuuk for embarkation.

Greenland is the world’s largest, non-continental island and is surrounded by the waters of the Atlantic and Arctic oceans. The nearest countries are Canada to the west and Iceland to the east. Disko Bay is an ideal spot for viewing icebergs created by calving glaciers. Humpback, Fin and Minke whales are also active in these waters, and guests are introduced to the Greenlandic Inuit culture and traditions first hand in remote, colorful villages while exploring the Nuuk fjord, the world’s second largest fjord system, embraced by snow-capped mountains, towering waterfalls and gleaming icebergs.

An anomaly in this remote and frozen wilderness is the youthful urban vibe of Sismiut, the country’s second largest town with artifacts resident in its museum of human habitation dating back 4,500 years. Volcanic Disco Island gives its name to the basalt mountains and huge icebergs of Disco Bay. Here is Qeqertarsuaq, a community with a distinctive octagonal church, which offers voyagers hiking options to basalt cliffs and to a waterfall. The vessel anchors at Uummannaq, a hunting and fishing based founded in 1763 with a canning factory and marble quarry. Danish and Greenlandic children believe that Santa Claus lives here. A mountain by the same name rises above the town 1,170 meters and a Zodiac cruise around the fjord reveals the stunning beauty of the Arctic. Not far away is the Eqp Sermia, an active tidewater glacier located in a wild and scenic fjord.

From this prime location guests are poised to witness the spring birthing of the icebergs that issue from the Ilulissat Icefjord. Here one of the world’s fastest moving and most active glaciers calves 46 cubic kilometers of ice annually. The breathtaking ice formations are best appreciated during a watercraft excursion along the fjords. In the town of Ilulissat is the Inuit Art Museum with paintings by Greenlandic, Faroese and Danish artists. A final stop at Itilleq showcases 100-population settlement on this small island that survives on fishing and hunting.

PROVIDENCE, RI, Aug. 11, 2016Antarctica’s ice-bound landscape is rife with activity in the ample sunlight of long austral summer days. Penguins, for example, are in a flurry of courting, nest building and egg incubation.

To witness this fascinating activity, Poseidon Expeditions, a leading provider of polar adventures in the expedition cruise industry, offers complimentary overnight camping to guests who book Deluxe, Premium and Owners suites on either of two late Fall departures. This means guests may literally awaken with the birds and watch their antics close at hand. This complimentary camping offer is a $250 per person value on top of the specially priced suites.

The balcony suites with bird’s eye view privileges also offer on new bookings only a 15 percent per person reduction off of regular rates on November 24-December 5, 2016 and December 4-16, 2016 departures of Classic Antarctic Peninsula voyages. The ship’s expedition staff-to-passenger ratio of 1:9 is one of the best in the industry.

Typical cruises from Ushuaia, Argentina, to the Antarctic Peninsula are from 10 to 12 nights. This allows for a reasonable amount of time for daily landings, which are always subject to ice and weather conditions. Travelers often opt for extensions before or after the Antarctic cruise, or they choose a departure that includes other destinations. For example, many travelers want to include a few days in Buenos Aires where they connect with the local flights to Ushuaia, the country’s southernmost town and point of embarkation. In Ushuaia guests can visit Tierra del Fuego either pre- or post-cruise. Poseidon Expeditions Sees Increased Demand for Off-Ship Camping in Antarctica, Sea Kayaking in Both Polar Regions

PROVIDENCE, RI, July 21, 2016 In Antarctica, Amundsen, Scott and Shackleton are among the adventuring giants whose legends live on. Today intrepid travelers can replicate the spirit of their on-land experiences, albeit more comfortably, while spending a night ashore wrapped in a warm bivvy sack surrounded by ice, snow and sky.

Poseidon Expeditions (https://poseidonexpeditions.com/) in response to a growing interest in off-ship excursions makes available 40 on-land camping slots per voyage into Antarctica. “Last year we had only 30 overnight slots per voyage available,” said Steve Wellmeier, managing director of Poseidon’s North American sales and reservation office. “These allotments quickly sold out so this season we decided to offer 40 spaces.”

Sea kayaking is also an activity growing in popularity on expedition cruises to both Polar Regions. Poseidon ExpeditionsM/V Sea Spirit, a 114-passenger luxury vessel, offers optional kayaking excursions through their exclusive Sea Kayak Club in both the Arctic and Antarctica on select voyages.

About Antarctica Camping: M/V Sea Spirit provides quality synthetic mummy-shaped sleeping bags rated for temperatures to -18ºC (0ºF). The bags are comfortable, roomy, water-repellent and connectable, accommodating body lengths of up to 6.5 feet. Guests are also issued a freshly laundered cotton sleeping bag liner and a full-length insulated foam sleeping pad. Guests may opt to sleep under the stars singly in a bivvy sack that slips over the sleeping bag. This is a non-complicated option that allows the utmost connection to the environment without sacrificing warmth and protection from the elements. These waterproof, breathable nylon bivvy sacks feature contour hoods and provide an additional 5º to 10ºC (9º to 18ºF) of insulation. Partners may also opt to sleep in a deluxe two-person stable, waterproof, freestanding dome tent instead. These measure 87 x 49 inches with additional vestibule space for gear.

Guests opting to bivouac, dig their own fox hole in the frozen world. They have access to a toilet tent for use during the time spent on shore. However, their last meal on the ship has to last them until their return to the ship the next morning, as no food is allowed ashore.  Neither the date nor the location of camping is known more than a few hours in advance, as a site must be scouted and weather conditions assessed just before venturing out. Guide tents are clearly marked. Children between ages 12 and 18 at the time of their voyage are allowed to participate in Antarctica Camping only if they are accompanied and supervised at all times during their camping activities by their parents or designated representative. All that’s needed is a sense of adventure and willingness to add a $250 supplement to their cruise fare.

For more details please see https://poseidonexpeditions.com/activities/camping/

About Poseidon Sea Kayak Club: Kayaking has been offered as an optional activity on expedition cruises to the polar regions for the past 10 years, and Poseidon wasted no time in making it available for its inaugural Antarctic season last year. The club is limited to eight guests per voyage in the Arctic and 16 per voyage in Antarctica. Participants are part of a guided paddling group utilizing exceptionally stable tandem sea kayaks with one or more qualified sea kayak guides leading each group and helping people in and out of the kayaks at all times. There is always a dedicated safety Zodiac (security boat) accompanying each paddling group who receive a comprehensive orientation and safety drill before getting into the kayaks. Guests also don polar‐quality Kokatat paddling suits and paddling-specific life jackets as well as other gear that along with the kayaks are checked and maintained prior to each cruise.

Guests can expect a real workout on these excursions that are on water sometimes for up to three hours, requiring paddling for up to six nautical miles or 10 kilometers. A kayak adventure may be unscripted and spontaneous depending on ice, weather and wildlife. Those wishing to kayak must subscribe to the club for a supplemental fee of $595 (Arctic voyages) or $750 (Antarctic Peninsula voyages) / $850 (South Georgia and Falkland Islands voyages).

For more details please see https://poseidonexpeditions.com/activities/seakayakclub/.

Poseidon Expeditions Helps Families and Singles Experience the Awe of Polar Cruising

Special Youth Rates, Triple Suites and Cabin-Share for Solos Keep Things Affordable for this Often-Overlooked Population

PROVIDENCE, RI, June 1, 2016Two demographic groups – children and single travelers – are often overlooked and underserved when it comes to expedition cruising. This is especially true when sailing through Arctic and Antarctic regions.

One company, purposefully bound to exploring both polar ice caps, is Poseidon Expeditions (http://poseidonexpeditions.com/). It has taken steps to assure that children as young as twelve – and sometimes even younger – have opportunities to become Polar ambassadors by experiencing remote areas of the high latitudes where polar bears or penguins prevail. The company also excels at welcoming single travelers with a variety of accommodation options that avoid having to pay a single supplement.

Poseidon Expeditions recommends its 114-passenger M/VSea Spirit for families traveling with children. This all-suite vessel has triple occupancy berths in most stateroom categories. Families can spread out and mingle in the publicareas.  Because the passenger composition will be mostly adults, children who are at ease around adults will be most comfortable. This setting encourages children to expand their conservation and environmental awareness by witnessing first-hand, regions impacted by climate change and changing wildlife patterns. M/V Sea Spirit sails north in the summer months and south in winter months. The rate for children age 16 and under is $150 a day, based on occupancy with two adults.

Single travelers have traditionally been challenged to find companies offering solo traveler-friendly cruise options. Poseidon Expeditions’ share program allows single travelers to request same-sex cabin assignments which precludes single-supplement fees. If the company can’t find a cabin mate for a request-share traveler, the single supplement is waived. This allows single travelers on a share basis to select accommodation in most cabin categories at the same per person cost that couples pay. Single travelers on a budget also can sign up for triple share, which is the most economical option available. Solo travelers who want to have a cabin to themselves will still pay a single supplement.

“We are seeing a trend toward more acceptance of sharing accommodations for expedition cruises to the polar regions. Singles paying the supplement used to be the norm, but there’s been a significant increase in requests for single share, which we arrange according to gender,” said Steve Wellmeier, managing director of Poseidon’s North American sales and reservation office. This past season, nearly 12 percent of its passengers to Antarctica asked for request-share accommodations, compared with less than two percent who chose to have their own cabin alone and to pay the single supplement.

A full list of special offers for Arctic and Antarctic expedition cruises can be found at http://poseidonexpeditions.com/special/. For complete information, rates, and itineraries on all of Poseidon’s polar cruises visit http://poseidonexpeditions.com/.  A new 80-page catalog detailing the company’s ships and activities is also available and can be requested online or through any of the Poseidon Expeditions offices.

Exploring Franz Josef Land: Archipelago of 191 Islands in High Arctic Emerges as New Frontier in Polar Expedition Cruising

PROVIDENCE, RI, May 5, 2016 The next frontier in polar expedition cruising is the High Arctic known as Franz Josef Land. Few have ventured here in recent decades. In fact, because of the ice, access by ship is possible only a few weeks each summer.

Poseidon Expeditions (http://poseidonexpeditions.com/) is the only company offering dedicated cruises from Longyearbyen, Svalbard to this archipelago of 191 uninhabited, volcanic, mostly glaciated islands that since 2012 arepart of the Russian Arctic National Park. The seal industry drove the first explorers here in the mid-1800s. They were followed by others searching for the North Pole.

A limited number of travelers can now explore these islands aboard two different Poseidon vessels, the Sea Spirit and the 50 Years of Victory. And, depending on the ship chosen, guest can extend their discovery further, through the use of kayaks or helicopters, to venture where the ships themselves cannot. Franz Josef Land is an archipelago in transition, both vibrant and dynamic while clearly positioned on the frontline of global climate change.

Depending on seasonal sea ice conditions, scheduled visits in Franz Josef Land may include Alexandra Land, Northbrook Island, Hooker Island, Rudolf Island, Champ Island and other historic or wildlife-significant areas of the uninhabited polar archipelago. These islands are blessed with more than 140 days of midnight sun each summer, leaving plenty of hours in the day for passengers to experience the scenery and wildlife while ashore or from the deck. While winds here are too intense for most shrubs and all trees to root, the Arctic poppy and assorted mosses thrive, along with polar bear and birdlife. Because of a rich biodiversity, the region is a marine mammal sanctuary with walrus, varieties of seals and whales commonly found here.

Aboard the Sea Spirit, limited space remains on July 7-20 and July 30-Aug. 12, 2016 departures, with rates starting at $7,295 per person for the 14-day program. Guests embark and disembark in Longyearbyen, Svalbard and can expect up to seven days of intensive discovery of Franz Josef Land, including historic sites where early explorers made their marks or met their fates. For the August 14-29, 2017 departure, Poseidon is offering an early booking discount up to 15% off the regular rates for the Aug. 14-29, 2017, “Arctic for Explorers” departure. Discounted rates start at $8,096 per person. http://poseidonexpeditions.com/arctic/franz-josef-land-arctic-for-explorers/2017-08-14/

Guests may opt for a $595 per person membership in Poseidon’s Sea Kayak Club in advance of their Sea Spirit cruise that offers interpretive kayak expeditions to a maximum of eight participants utilizing ultra-stable sea kayaks, led by one or more qualified sea kayak guides. A dedicated safety Zodiac accompanies the group who receive a comprehensive Sea Kayak Club orientation before the first paddle and safety briefings throughout the voyage. On any given outing participants may paddle for up to three hours, covering six nautical (10 kilometer) miles. Levels of fitness and prior experience are required for membership.

For the 2016 summer season, 50 Years of Victoryis offering a 10 percent discount off regular rates for 14-day cruises, July 10-23 and August 1-14, 2016, with discounted rates starting at $24,995 per person. Approximately three days are spent in the archipelago, but the program also include a visit to the geographic North Pole, 90º north latitude and sightseeing tours by helicopter. Rates for the two 2017 summer departures – July 14-27 and June 25-July 8 – begin at $27,995 per person. Departures are round trip from Murmansk, an Arctic city celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2016. http://poseidonexpeditions.com/northpole/north-pole-icebreaker-cruise/

Passengers on North-Pole-Bound Nuclear Icebreaker Cruise Little-Known Russian Arctic

Bookings by April 30, 2016, for July 10 and Aug. 1 Departures Come with up to $2,000 Savings, Free Charter Flights, Hotel Nights

PROVIDENCE, RI, Mar. 16, 2016   Those who think they’ve seen and done it all may want to consider a two-week voyage bound for the North Pole where guests stand on Arctic Ocean sea ice and search for polar bears in the Russian Arctic known as Franz Josef Land.

Poseidon Expeditions (http://poseidonexpeditions.com/), which focuses on polar cruise adventures north and south, offers savings of up to $2,000 per person and complimentary hotel nights and charter flights on bookings made before April 30, 2016, for either of two summer 2016 departures to the North Pole. Travel is aboard one of the most powerful icebreakers in the world, the nuclear-powered 50 Years of Victory.

The promotion that applies to two 2016 departures, July 10-23 and Aug. 1-14, includes complimentary accommodation with breakfast at a luxury hotel in Helsinki before and after the adventure, and complimentary airport transfers and roundtrip charter flights from Helsinki to Murmansk in northern Russia where the voyage begins. Guests receive $1,000 off per person for booking twin standard and mini suites and $2,000 off on upper cabins.

“Since 2001 our experience with voyages to 90º North aboard 50 Years of Victory has been an unqualified success and a great opportunity for intrepid travelers looking for the ultimate polar adventure,” said Nikolay Saveliev, President of Poseidon Expeditions.

From Murmansk the ship moves north via Kola Bay, a fjord in the Barents Sea, part of the Arctic Ocean that is off the coasts of Norway and Russia. This biologically diverse region is important for reserves of oil and gas, as well as cod and other fish populations.

As the ship approaches the high Arctic latitudes, it must often plow through thick fields of sea ice. Unlike other expedition vessels, the 50 Years of Victory – replete with helicopter for inclusive aerial sightseeing – offers its passengers rarely seen panoramas of the Arctic world.  Guests are invited to disembark at the North Pole where they can straddle the Eastern and Western hemispheres, enjoy a 90º North barbecue and take a plunge into the Arctic Ocean.

The homeward voyage brings guests through Franz Josef Archipelago, a frozen necklace of some 190 islands in the Russian Arctic. Thanks to 24 hours of daylight, photographers are lured to the railing when not in Zodiacs spotting polar bears, walrus and immense sea bird colonies perched overhead on towering cliffs.

Being aboard the largest nuclear-powered icebreaker in the world, capable of forcefully driving through Arctic ice nearly 10 feet thick, sets these North Pole voyages apart from any other expedition ship adventure. The 525-foot 50 Years of Victory, a working vessel, carries 128 passengers in comfortable accommodations, all with exterior views and en suite facilities. Public spaces include a dining room; aft salon for lectures, presentations and socializing; a bow-facing bar and lounge; library; plus a gym, two saunas and swimming pool with heated seawater. The ship is equipped with a modern clinic and physician.

All departures feature a series of informative presentations by the multi-lingual, international expedition staff, excursions onto the sea ice and ashore via Zodiac landing craft in Franz Josef Land, helicopter flightseeing, and other special activities.

Since 2001, Poseidon Expeditions has been a leader in making the North Pole icebreaker program commercially available to travelers, operating 32 voyages and carrying more than 3,000 passengers to date aboard the nuclear-powered Yamal and 50 Years of Victory to 90º North.

Summer 2016 is the ninth consecutive year of tourism operation for 50 Years of Victory, which is otherwise employed during the year in assisting cargo and research vessels access hard-to-reach areas in the Russian High Arctic and along the Northern Sea Route between the Pacific Ocean and Northern Europe. Last October, Poseidon announced that passenger voyages to the North Pole would continue through summer 2018.

Poseidon Expeditions Announces New Polar Expedition Cruises In Arctic and Antarctic for 2017-18

PROVIDENCE, RI, March 3, 2016 The lure of the polar environment draws travelers onto expedition ships to explore worlds of ice and snow, polar bears and penguins, and the history of heroic figures who began the first conversations about the Arctic and Antarctica.

One adventure cruise company dedicated to providing intimate access to both polar ice caps is Poseidon Expeditions (http://www.poseidonexpeditions.com/), which today announced schedules and rates for the 2017 Arctic and 2017-18 Antarctic seasons aboard the 114-passenger luxury expedition ship Sea Spirit.

Poseidon Expeditions, a leading provider of polar adventures in the expedition cruise industry, also released information on early booking discounts, new itineraries and other passenger enhancements. Founded in 1999, this company is a recognized leader in icebreaker cruises to the North Pole, expanding its products and services in recent years to include expedition cruises to other areas of the Arctic and to Antarctica, South Georgia and the Falkland Islands.

The president of Poseidon Expeditions, Nikolay Saveliev, said, “Having now successfully completed our first 2015-16 season in both the Arctic and Antarctic – with great passenger experiences and satisfaction levels – we’re gratified to launch a third season of expedition voyages for those with the spirit of polar adventure in their hearts.”

The complete 2017-18 Arctic and Antarctic schedules, rates and special offers can be found at www.poseidonexpeditions.com. A new 80-page catalog detailing the company’s ships and activities is also available, and can be requested online or through any of the Poseidon Expeditions offices.

Poseidon will again offer a wide range of Arctic cruises, including a first-ever voyage on June 15-29, 2017 that explores Iceland’s northern fjords and follows the Arctic Circle east to the Norwegian coast where a number of stops are planned before proceeding north to Bear Island and the Spitsbergen Archipelago. Passengers also will have the unique opportunity to cruise directly from Spitsbergen to Franz Josef Land in the Russian High Arctic on an August 14-29, 2017 expedition.

Arctic rates in 2017 for the all-suite Sea Spirit begin at $8,395 per person, double, and if three people share a spacious Triple Suite the rate is just $5,995 per person. New for 2017 will be the inclusion of a pre-cruise hotel night in either Reykjavik, Iceland, or Longyearbyen, Spitsbergen, depending on the itinerary.

Following the last Arctic voyage to East Greenland in mid-September of 2017, the vessel will position to South America to commence a series of expedition cruises to the Antarctic Peninsula, South Georgia and the Falkland Islands during the 2017-18 austral summer season. The new Antarctic season also will include the popular Antarctic Circle cruise, which travels below the most southerly of the earth’s five major circles of latitude, approximately 66º south.

Antarctic rates for the 2017-18 season begin at just $7,995 per person in a Triple Suite and $11,195 in a double-occupancy Main Deck Suite.

For both the Arctic and Antarctic seasons, travel agents and consumers can take advantage of early booking savings of 10%-15% from regular rates. These savings will be available through September 2016.

Sea Spiritoffers all-suite accommodations ranging from 215 to 463 square feet (20-43 square meters). There are two multi-purpose lounges for educational programming and entertainment, a restaurant that can accommodate all passengers in one seating, a well-stocked polar library, and ample outdoor deck space to enjoy the polar landscapes and wildlife.

Activities directed by a team of experienced polar guides and educators include Zodiac excursions, hiking and optional kayaking and camping, along with informative presentations aboard. The ship’s expedition staff-to-passenger ratio of 1:9 is one of the best in the business.

Built in 1991 as the Renaissance V, the ship sailed for a decade in Alaska and worldwide as the popular Spirit of Oceanus. She underwent technical improvements for polar cruising in 2010, and has been providing expedition cruises in both the Arctic and Antarctic environments as Sea Spirit the past six years. The ship will undergo major refurbishment of public spaces during a dry dock in Vigo, Spain, spring 2016.
