This Berlin event is one of the six major international marathons (Tokyo, Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago and New York City). Runners who challenge and accomplish all six receive the Six Star Finisher Medal. More marathon records have been established in Berlin than any of the other majors.

This marathon, famous for being flat and fast, started in the Grunewald forest in 1974 and moved to West Berlin in 1981. Over recent years the BMW Berlin Marathon has provided nine world records, including Dennis Kimetto's marathon world record of 2:02:57 in Berlin in 2014. The female course record 2:19:12 was also set here in 2005.
