Western River Expeditions Taking Reservations Starting Nov. 15, 2018, For 2020 Grand Canyon Rafting Trips

SALT LAKE CITY, Oct. 17, 2018 – Western River Expeditions is taking reservations as of Nov. 15, 2018, for river rafting adventures in 2020 on the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon.

For those chomping at the bit to get on a raft in 2019, the company advises that its Grand Canyon programs are already sold out; however Western River can take bookings now for comparable river rafting trips for the 2019 season on whitewater rivers through Cataract Canyon (Colorado River) and Desolation Canyon (Green River).

“We’re experiencing significant increases in the number of people booking rafting trips further out and in the number of private charters that take over an entire trip departure,” said Brandon Lake, CMO of Western River Expeditions. He explained that Western River is bound by the permits granted to them. These permits limit the number of guests that can travel with them each year. “This number doesn’t change, but guest demand for what is essentially a limited opportunity does.”

To book a 2020 Grand Canyon rafting trip, visit westernriver.com at 8 a.m. Mountain Time on Nov. 15, 2018, to secure spots. The Western River reservation team will also be ready to assist with phone reservations. Call toll-free 866-904-1160 or 801-942-6669. 2020 reservations will require a $500 per person non-refundable deposit.

Those who can’t wait until 2020 may want to consider experiences similar to the Grand Canyon that also combine spectacular scenery with wild whitewater. Western River Expeditions points out that a four-day Cataract Canyon Rafting Adventure doesn’t play second fiddle to the Grand Canyon. It’s just a different section of the river and as remarkable in its own way.

Utah’s Cataract Canyon, deep within Canyonlands National Park, is near enough in scale, appearance and proximity to the Grand Canyon that it works the same kind of magic found in the Grand herself. Just one canyon upstream on the Colorado River in Utah’s Canyonlands National Park is hands down the best alternative to a Grand Canyon rafting vacation,” said Lake.

South of Moab, UT, where the Green and Colorado Rivers meet in a majestic setting called "The Confluence," Cataract Canyon begins. Expanded in size and now fortified by the waters of the Green, the Colorado River carves a deep chasm through the red rock heart of Canyonlands National Park. During spring runoff, the ride can rival the most legendary whitewater anywhere in the world. The remainder of the year river rafters are treated to fun Class III-IV rapids interspersed with calm stretches ideal for a swim under spellbinding canyon walls and geologic formations. Ample time is allotted for side canyon hikes and exploration of ancient Native American sites. The adventure ends with a scenic flight over Canyonlands on the return to Moab’s Canyonlands Field Airport. See: https://www.westernriver.com/cataract-canyon-rafting

Farther north from the confluence, Utah’s Desolation Canyon was carved by the 730-mile Green River, born from glacial melts on the Continental Divide in the Wyoming Rockies. The Green has created such rare and unique universe that “Deso” has been named to the National Register of Historic Places. The Green’s whitewater promises soft adventure thrills over 60 fun-filled Class II and III rapids. The fun begins with a scenic flight from Moab to the top of a remote desert plateau. Winding through a wilderness of twisted mountains, dramatic cliffs and towering mesas carved by an ancient inland sea, the river reveals stories that stretch back over 40 million years in geologic time as guests paddle and splash 88 river miles.

Calling this “the ultimate, back-country family river trip,” Jason Taylor, an operations manager who oversees all of Western River Expeditions’ trips in Utah, noted that the five-day program is appropriate for children as young as 5. It’s also a great river trip for extended families and first-time rafters. For more details please see https://www.westernriver.com/desolation-canyon.

Western River Expeditions’ Guests Can Now Zip Line to Breakfast or Lunch On 9-Day Costa Rica Vacation Package

SALT LAKE CITY, UT, July 25, 2018 – An adventure to Costa Rica with Western River Expeditions packs as much activity into each day as guests can handle with time out to be romanced by the tropical surroundings including, new this season, an invitation to zip line to breakfast or lunch.

Pacuare Lodge, a premier eco-lodge, is one of four accommodations where guests dine and sleep on Western River Expeditions’ 9-day/8-night Costa Rica Vacation Package. Here early risers can birdwatch at dawn, then zip line 130 meters through the canopy to land at The Nest in a Kapock tree for breakfast. A midday canopy tour will also position guests onto this elevated structure for a three-course lunch. After dining comes an invigorating rappel off the 20 meter-high platform to terra firma between the lodge’s on-ground reception area and main restaurant. The Nest accommodates one seating (for up to five people) daily for breakfast and lunch. (Supplies are delivered by a pulley system.)

Breakfast menus consist of a choice of a seasonal selection of tropical fruits (papaya, pineapple, watermelon) with granola, eggs (any style) with ham, a choice of organic banana pancakes, French toast, or the traditional Gallo pinto (rice & beans) flavored with herbs and bean broth, served with sour cream, scrambled or fried eggs. Lunch menus offer a selection of fresh organic salads with grilled chicken, seared yellowfin tuna, or grilled vegetables with avocado and local Turrialba cheese. The kitchen follows a farm-to-table philosophy featuring organic and locally grown ingredients. They produce much of the fruit, vegetables and tubers served from Las Nubes de Tuis, a private, organic farm in the mountains above the Pacuare River.

Western River Expeditions’ core Costa Rica program can be arranged for just two people or for up to 25 and can be customized by lengthening or shortening the trip and by adding or deleting activities. Year-round departures on a space-available basis can be tailored to travelers’ schedules. The per person rate from $3,395 includes eight nights at four properties with five breakfasts, three each lunches and dinners; two half-day trips rafting class II-IV white water on the Pacuare River; two Pacuare Lodge activities; soaking in the thermal waterfalls and pools of Tabacón; a guided 3km walk over 15 suspension bridges (part of a guided two-mile walk in a private nature reserved); a tour of Manuel Antonio National Park and airport (San Jose) and interior destination transfers. The zip line-birdwatching-breakfast is $85 per person; the zip line-canopy tour with lunch is $125 per person.

The tour utilizes four distinguished properties selected for panache, location and comfort: San Jose’s personable Hotel Grano de Oro; Tabacón Grand Spa Thermal Resort where guests enjoy a swim-up bar, local and international gourmet cuisine and are positioned to explore the geology of Arenal Volcano and nearby hot springs; Pacuare Lodge (National Geographic Traveler World’s Best Ecolodge); and Tulemar Bungalows (a Travel + Leisure World’s Best award winner)in Manuel Antonio National Park offering oceans and beaches.

No Roads, No Towns, No Connectivity: Instead Families Focus on Nature and Whitewater on the Green River in Utah’s Desolation Canyon

SALT LAKE CITY, May 15, 2018 – One of the most remote (no roads, no towns, no cell service) destinations in the continental United States also tops the list when it comes to family rafting vacations.

This is Utah’s Desolation Canyon, carved over millennia by the 730-mile Green River that is spawned by glacial melts on the Continental Divide in the wilds of northern Wyoming.

The Green is less strident than the Grand Canyon’s rollicking Colorado River. Instead of the world-class rapids on the Colorado, whitewater on the Green is playful, marked by over 60 warm-water Class I-III rapids, packed with more than enough splash to elicit excitement for ages 5 and up.

From June 1 through Aug. 8, a small plane transports guests from Moab, Utah, on a scenic, 40-minute flight to a desert plateau overlooking the Green River where after a short hike, Western River Expeditions’ 5 Day Desolation Canyon family rafting vacation begins. While paddling on the Green, guests typically surrender their senses to twisted mountains, dramatic cliffs, and towering plateaus carved by an ancient inland sea. Rates are $1,645 for ages 16 and up and $1,025 for ages 5-15 including…

  • exploring 88 river miles
  • the option to paddle two-person inflatable kayaks
  • or, relax in a guide-powered oar boat
  • witnessing 40 million years of geologic history
  • maneuvering 60+ fun-filled Class I-III rapids. One of the greatest features of this expedition is that the rapids are spread fairly evenly throughout the length of the trip so the action keeps it exciting all journey long.
  • visiting famous Wild West outlaw hideouts. Butch Cassidy and the Wild Bunch found that the rugged terrain here offered a perfect hideaway.
  • wondering about the past at now-derelict homesteads built of native materials
  • getting to know an ancient culture that both foraged and planted corn from the 7th to the 13th centuries, leaving behind Fremont Native American petroglyphs
  • hiking off-river with a seasoned guide well-versed in the region’s history and geology
  • deluxe camping on broad, sandy beaches along the river bank
  • enjoying host-prepared adult and children’s meals sourced from local farmers and producers
  • sunbathing on and off the water shaded by ancient cottonwoods
  • watching a Trip Jester entertain the children so parents have some down time

On its journey south through Utah towards the confluence with the Colorado River in Canyonlands National Park, the Green has created such an unforgettable universe that Desolation Canyon has been singled out as a National Register of Historic Places.

Calling this “the ultimate, back-country family river trip,” Jason Taylor, an operations manager who oversees all of Western River Expeditions’ trips in Utah, noted that the five-day program is appropriate for children as young as 5. It’s also a great river trip for extended families and first-time rafters. Five guides are assigned to trips that accommodate up to 25.

One plus that families come to love is the fact that in this remote environment cell and data service are non-existent. Instead of connecting to electronic devices, the connection is with family, guides and other guests. Children focus on the designated Trip Jester who, in a fun and informative way, shares insights with kids of all ages into this world of wonder. Creative games, swimming, arts and crafts are all part of the fun.

While some time- and career-stressed parents may have difficulty connecting with their own children, Taylor said that by trip’s end, they’re melding with their families and creating stronger family bonds and memories.

“We see children transform from being needy and whiney to independent and happy. Everybody grows on this trip. In fact, this truly is the perfect family vacation. Some families come back every couple of years,” he said.

Southern Utah’s Rivers, Canyons and Parks, Refuse to Play Second Fiddle to the Grand Canyon

The Region Encompassing the Colorado and Green Rivers, Along the Utah & Arizona Border Boasts More National and State Parks Per Acre Than Anywhere Else in the World

SALT LAKE CITY, March 26, 2018 – Some of the best whitewater in North America froths deep within the canyons of Arizona and Utahon the Colorado and Green Rivers. People hopeful of river rafting here in the 2018 season are advised that the Grand Canyon portion of the river is nearly sold out for the season with space beginning to fill for 2019 trips as well.

However, comparable adventure options on the water and on land are still available if you follow the Colorado River north into Utah.

When active travelers seek experiences similar to the Grand Canyon that also combine spectacular scenery with wild white water, veteran tour operator Western River Expeditions (https://www.westernriver.com/) suggests that a Cataract Canyon raft tripis as rewarding and remarkable in its own way.

“Utah’s Cataract Canyon, deep within Canyonlands National Park, is near enough in scale, appearance and proximity to Grand Canyon that it works the same kind of magic found in the Grand herself. Just one canyon upstream, above Lake Powell on the Colorado River System is hands down the best alternative to a Grand Canyon rafting vacation,” said Brandon Lake, CMO of Western River Expeditions.

Cataract Canyon begins downstream from Moab, UT at the confluence of the Green and Colorado Rivers.

Western's Cataract Canyon 4-day trip offers departures in May, June, July and August. A per person double rate for adults (ages 16+) is $1,520; and $1,130 for ages 10-15. The rate includes equipment and guides for rafting, hiking and camping, plus guide-prepared meals, transfers from Moab to the river and the return scenic flight over Canyonlands National Park and shuttle to Moab. A two-day program on this stretch of the river is also offered in May, June and July. See Western’s Cataract Canyon Express, https://www.westernriver.com/cataract-canyon-express.

Also on the Colorado River north of the Grand Canyon Western River Expeditions offers a four-day Westwater Canyon Rafting & Multisport Adventure combining rafting on Class III-V whitewater plus a Hummer® Safari off-road adventure. Guests return evenings to Red Cliffs Lodge on the banks of the Colorado River for overnights and breakfasts. Westwater Canyon was named "The West's Best Short Whitewater Trip" by National Geographic. This program is available June through September at $695 per adult (age 13+) and $670 for age 12 (minimum required).

Full and half-day rafting programs on the Colorado River out of Moab are also available from Western’s affiliate, the Moab Adventure Center. See: https://www.moabadventurecenter.com/moab-river-rafting

Looking further north on the Utah’s Green River, families will discover five days of rafting through Desolation Canyon featuring 60 playful rapids and captivating off-river hiking.  After a spectacular scenic flight from Moab to a dramatic desert plateau, the adventure begins through 40 million years of geological time. Think outlaw hideouts, ancient dinosaur habitats and Fremont Native American petroglyphs. The minimum age for this trip is 5, making it ideal for young families. The rate for adults (16+) is $1,645 and $1,025 for ages 5-15. Departures are May through August. See: https://www.westernriver.com/desolation-canyon.

Western’s vacation consultants also suggest adding extra time in the area to explore the many national and state parks nearby. Guided adventures out of Moab, Utah, the undisputed adventure capital of the West encompass activities like rappelling, canyoneering, biking, hiking, flightseeing, and four-wheeling the surrounding landscape. Demand So Great for Grand Canyon Rafting Trips, Western River Expeditions Now Booking Two Years Out

SALT LAKE CITY, UT – Does rafting through the Grand Canyon top your bucket list? One company that specializes in rafting western rivers says a dollop of patience is required to make dreams come true.

“We’re putting people on wait lists now for our three-, four-, six- and seven-day 2018 Grand Canyon trips that are already 100 percent booked,” reports Brandon Lake, CMO of Western River Expeditions. Although there still may be some cancellations for 2018, to secure a trip of a lifetime, he advises looking at the company’s 2019 calendar of departures to try to secure a space when bookings are accepted starting Nov.15, 2017. Currently over 1,000 guests have indicated interest and put their names on the 2019 wait list.

“Unprecedented demand for Western River Expeditions’ trips through the Grand Canyon is outpacing our capacity,” Lake adds. “Having trips sold out this far in advance is a first in this company’s 50-plus year history and is a bit of a dilemma for our sales team who don’t like to say ‘no’ to a client.”

One of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, a trip through the Grand Canyon, appears to sell itself. However Western River Expeditions’ sales team is tasked with suggesting suitable alternatives for sold-out Grand Canyon space for those river enthusiasts who just can’t wait. Two good alternatives include a four-day trip through Cataract Canyon, often referred to as the “Grand Canyon’s Younger Sister” or a five-day journey down Desolation Canyon on the Green River.

“Utah’s Cataract Canyon, deep within Canyonlands National Park, is near enough in scale, appearance and proximity to Grand Canyon that it works the same kind of magic one will find in the Grand herself. Just one canyon upstream on the Colorado River in Utah’s Canyonlands National Park is hands down the best alternative to a Grand Canyon rafting vacation,” explains Lake.

Western’s vacation consultants also suggest swapping the extra days you’d spend on a Grand Canyon trip for a few days of adventure in Moab, Utah - the undisputed adventure capital of the West. Activities like rappelling, canyoneering, biking, hiking, and four-wheeling the surrounding landscape can add an expanded vacation experience to a four-day Cataract Canyon rafting trip.

Another rafting option highly recommended for families and first-timers by Western’s sales team is Desolation Canyon on the Green River, a mellower but equally breathtaking rafting experience. Like Cataract, it also departs from Moab, Utah.

Costa Rica ‘Must-Sees’ and More on Western River Expeditions’ Customizable Multi-Sport Adventure

SALT LAKE CITY, UT, Sept. 27, 2017 – The company that introduces North America’s iconic rivers to whitewater rafters also specializes in year-round rafting, hiking, nature and sun-worshiping trips in Costa Rica.

Western River Expeditions’ (http://www.westernriver.com/) 9-day tropical escape for parties of two to 25 is an unbeatable core program that can be customized by lengthening or shortening the trip and by adding or deleting activities. Departures can be tailored to a traveler’s schedule and are offered year-round on a space available basis. The rate for the 9-day program begins at $3,395 per person; guides, in-country transportation, activities, lodging and many meals included.

The core Costa Rica Adventure itinerary represents as much action packed into each day as daylight allows. Think two half-day rafting trips on Class II-IV whitewater on the Pacuare River (rated among the top 10 rivers in the world by National Geographic). The warm waters (often nearly 80 degrees Fahrenheit) are perfect for floating along under the jungle canopy. Thirty-eight whitewater rapids over the course of just 16 miles offer plenty of excitement while heading downriver, stopping along the way to visit lush pools and thundering waterfalls.

Then consider zip lining over the canopy of a tropical rainforest before pumping adrenalin again on 15 suspension bridges that are part of a guided two-mile walk among the treetops in a private nature reserve, surrounded by monkeys, iguanas, sloths and exotic birds along the flanks of smoking Arenal Volcano (over 700 species of flora some 300 species of birds have been cataloged). Here, tired muscles get a soak in the waterfalls and thermal pools of Tabacón Spa and Resort.

It’s possible to begin recognizing by sight and sound a few of the many creatures inhabiting Manuel Antonio National Park (named one of the world's 12 most beautiful national parks by Forbes) on a 2.5-hour guided nature walk. Here guests may spot one of the 1,000 remaining endangered Mono Titi (squirrel monkey) that live in only one location in the world, the Manuel Antonio National Park biological corridor.

Leaving the jungle behind, guests then skipover to Playa Manuel Antonio, a crescent of ivory sand between the rainforest and calm waters, and to nearby Playa Espadilla, a long beach lined with coconut palms and Indian almond trees.

Days begin and end at four distinguished properties selected for panache, location and comfort: San Jose’s personable Hotel Grano de Oro; the Pacuare Lodge (National Geographic Traveler World’s Best Ecolodge), Tabacón Grand Spa Thermal Resort where guests enjoy a swim-up bar, local and international gourmet cuisine; and Tulemar Bungalows (a Travel + Leisure World’s Best award winner). The rate includes accommodations; meals (eight breakfasts, three each lunches and dinners); equipment and guides for scheduled activities; and transfers between San Jose airport, the hotels and the activities.

Travelers wanting to modify these core iconic Costa Rica destinations and activities may shorten the set itinerary by omitting Arenal or Manuel Antonio or simply shortening a stay in either location. For visitors who desire to expand the action and time in-country, optional adventures can be added such as sport fishing or surf lessons in Manuel Antonio, a trip to the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve to scan the treetops for the Resplendent Quetzal and other exotic birds, or an excursion to the Caribbean-side of the country to experience Tortuguero National Park. The options are as endless as the wonders of Costa Rica.

Western River Expeditions Promises Families They’ll Unplug and Reconnect with Nature While Rafting Green River through Desolation Canyon

SALT LAKE CITY, June 8, 2017 – Sure, you can still take all the selfies you want. But basically you’re unplugged for five days and four nights while you reconnect with the natural world.

That’s the promise and premise of what may well be the best multi-day family river rafting adventure in the West on the Green River through Utah’s Desolation Canyon. Western River Expeditions (http://www.westernriver.com/) offers this experience throughout the summer.

“The Desolation Canyon (Green River) trip is probably one of the best all-around river trips I have ever experienced! It has something for everyone, fun rapids, calm water, hikes and scenery. I would highly recommend this trip to any and everyone no matter their age,” reported one guest who hails from the river rafting territory of Utah.

Ages 5 and up can participate in this world-class river experience that runs weekly throughout May, June (2, 10, 18 25) and July (4, 12, 20, 26) and on two early August departures (1 and 8). The per person, double, rate for ages 16 and up is $1,595; and for ages 5-15, $995. Rates include a scenic flight to the Green River from Moab, transfers, rafting, hiking, camping (cots, tents, sleeping bags, chairs and water-resistant bag), and all meals between departure and return. For details please see http://www.westernriver.com/desolation-canyon.

The lore and mystery of the West come alive as guests explore Utah's famous outlaw hideouts, ancient dinosaur habitats and Fremont Native American petroglyphs off the shores of the Green River’s whitewater that promises thrills galore while rafting down river over 60 fun-filled Class II and III rapids. This river is a tease from start to finish through Desolation Canyon whether in two-person inflatable kayaks or clustered in an oar boat with a Western River guide. The fun begins with a scenic flight from Moab to the top of a dramatic desert plateau. Here the river just slithers along, but wait. Winding through a remarkable wilderness of twisted mountains, dramatic cliffs and towering plateaus carved by an ancient inland sea, the river reveals stories that stretch back over 40 million years in geologic history as guests paddle and splash 88 river miles.

Western River Expeditions helped put Desolation Canyon on the map for families, and in the past three years interest has been unprecedented, breaking reservation records in 2015 and 2016 and experiencing a 36 percent increase to date in 2017 over 2016.

Brandon Lake, Western’s CMO attributes the growth to the fact that Utah itself is in high demand because of the state’s successful Mighty Five ad campaign.

“The fact that families can truly disconnect while they’re on the Green is also a huge factor,” says Lake. “The popularity of our Grand Canyon trips, with reservations already looking solid into 2018 and nearly sold out for 2017, means that clients are turning to other comparable rivers for their rafting vacation.”

Summer Fun is Synonymous with Swimming - Western River Expeditions Offers Its Top Picks for Swimming Holes, Pools and Hot Springs on Rivers in the West

SALT LAKE CITY, UT, May 11, 2017 – Getting wet under the hot summer sun and thoroughly enjoying it is an experience that participants of a whitewater rafting trip anticipate with youthful exuberance. It might be a giant wave from a rapid, a friendly water fight between rafts or a swim in a side stream or river eddy. The aim is to get drenched. However, knowing where to soak in a fun and safe environment is important.

For the benefit of river runners everywhere, the veteran guides of Western River Expeditions have recommended six places to swim, dive or soak on four legendary rafting rivers in the West. Following are the expert’s picks where spending time cavorting like seals enhances the inner child.

Colorado River - Cataract Canyon, Utah / Indian Creek at river mile 30.5

From spring through early summer, a waterfall and pool are wedged into a narrow side canyon paradise with 2,000-foot canyon walls and displays of Native American ruins.  Guests leave their rafts to hike to this secluded slice of Indian Creek that starts miles away in the Abajo Mountains. This is a 4-day rafting trip for ages 10 and up with rates from $1,475. Guests thrill to Class III and IV rapids over the 100-mile journey. See: http://www.westernriver.com/cataract-canyon-rafting

Colorado River – Upper Grand Canyon, Arizona / Havasu Creek at mile 157

Hike a mile up from the Colorado River along the turquoise waters of Havasu Creek and you come to Ruby Pools. Here, every 20 feet or so is another 5 to 10-foot waterfall. Ruby Pools is the best spot for small jumps off the rocks into deep waters. Beyond Ruby, accessed by a long hike in from the rim, are 10 miles of Havasu Creek from Supai Village to the Colorado River, regarded as one of the most stunning Gardens of Eden on Earth. It takes another private visit to access this section of Havasu. Western’s iconic raft trip is a 6- or 7-day vacation for ages 12 and up, from $2,699 per person. Class III to V rapids abound on the 188-mile river course. See: http://www.westernriver.com/grand-canyon-vacation

Colorado River – Lower Grand Canyon, Arizona / Pumpkin Spring at mile 212.9

The rock formation, colored orange with streaks down the sides looks just like a giant pumpkin. Here is the best cliff jumping spot in the canyon. The water is warmer than the upper canyon, but inside the pumpkin itself, it’s recommended for foot-soaking only, not for swimming. The water contains high levels of arsenic as well as concentrations of lead, zinc, copper and other metals. Under the direction of a guide, jumping off the pumpkin into the river is a ton of fun. This gentler section of the Colorado River can accommodate ages 9 and up on Class II and III rapids. This is a 3-day program with rates from $1,299. See: http://www.westernriver.com/grand-canyon-river-trip

Green River – Desolation Canyon, Utah / Rock Creek at river mile 41

A side canyon, spring-fed stream, Rock Creek is usually clear and tempting for a nice long dip. Brook trout thrive here in the shadows ofRock Creek Canyon that sports a former homestead built of hand-carved sandstone. Hikers will see Fremont petroglyphs on the hike in. Butch Cassidy and the Wild Bunch found that the rugged terrain here offered a perfect hideaway. Floating down the Green River, guests know they have arrived at Rock Creek because of the natural oasis, with old ranch outbuildings shaded by apple trees. Legendary American author and environmental crusader Edward Abbey on a 1980 Desolation float wrote, "This is one of the sweetest, brightest, grandest, loneliest of primitive regions still remaining." This is a 5-day adventure for ages 5 and up. Over its 99 miles, guests encounter Class II and III rapids. See: http://www.westernriver.com/desolation-canyon

Main Salmon River, Idaho / Barth Hot Springs at river mile 22.5

Sore muscles need attention! This is an easy hike off the river to a hot springs pool with a beautiful view of the river canyon. The large springs can accommodate up to a dozen soakers. This 5-day vacation through Class III and IV rapids over 82 river miles is for ages 6 and up with rates from $1,590. See: http://www.westernriver.com/main-salmon-river

Middle Fork of the Salmon River, Idaho / Sunflower Hot Springs at mile 32.6

This free-flowing river drops 3,000 feet over the 100-mile course through the River of No Return Wilderness, the largest wilderness in the Lower 48. Enroute guests enjoy Sunflower Hot Springs seeping from a bedrock outcrop 30 feet above the river. An improvised wooden spout sends a stream of hot water cascading off the edge into a relaxing riverside shower. Water reaches 100 degrees, providing a hot-water massage for tired muscles. Here, the Sheepeater Indians would soak the horns of Bighorn sheep so they could create their bows. This 5- or 6-day journey welcomes ages 7 and up, with Class III and IV rapids over 100 river miles. River and Canyon Swimming Safety Tips from the Experts

  • Always wear your lifejacket or PFD (personal flotation device). A PFD is required whileswimming with a guide’s permission off the bank or in the main river channel.  Ask your guides whether it should be worn off-river while swimming in side canyon creeks and hot springs.  It should be fastened and adjusted to a snug fit. It must always be worn while in the raft. Wearing a pair of floatable footwear (Teva sandals for example) is also a good idea when swimming.
  • Swim only when and where your guides instruct.
  • Always be sure to let your guides or another adult know where you are, especially when you plan to enter the water.
  • Neverjump into the river or pool unless your guide says it’s ok to do so. Always jump feet first.
  • Watch for signs of chill or the onset of hyperthermia. The water in the river can be cold, especially on early season trips or on rivers that are dam controlled.
  • Never swim alone!  Use the Buddy System.
  • Try not to swallow the water.  It may look clear and clean but you never know what has gotten into it upstream.
  • Get out before you are tired. Exhaustion comes on quick and can lead to slips and accidents.
  • Protect yourself from the sun.  Exposure can be intense. Be sure to wear a waterproof, broad spectrum SPF 40+ applied at minimum 30 minutes before entering the water. Be sure to reapply immediately after you dry off.
  • Know where the kids are at all times!  Kids love water but they can easily get in over their head.

All Signs Point to Epic Year for Whitewater Rafting in the West

Lake February Snow Pack Reports 150% of Seasonal Average

SALT LAKE CITY, Mar 2, 2017 – The extraordinary creates epics. That’s what Western River Expeditions hopes to see this season when it comes to whitewater rafting.

Why?

Prospects are excellent for a robust whitewater runoff season for major rafting rivers in the West. A lineup that includes the Colorado River and Columbia River Basins. This is thanks to near-record snow pack in the mountains. As of late February, the snow pack measured 151 percent of the historic average.

“If spring temperatures are normal or cooler than average, the mountains will preserve a lot of this massive snow pack moisture until normal run-off time in May through mid-June. If the spring is wet, then it will be an epic high water year. If it’s dry, I'm confident that it will at least be average and average is awesome!” said Brian Merrill, CEO of Western River Expeditions (http://www.westernriver.com/).

This news is music to the ears of avid rafters who love high water rafting thrills but who also appreciate a river’s speed that translates to more time for side canyon explorations and social activities in camp.

The snow pack news is also a call to action at Western River Expeditions that is gearing up with equipment and guide training for a high water year.

“As always, what happens between now and the first of May will make all the difference. However, if you look at all the years that were at 130 percent of normal or better at this point in the year, they all turned out to be good water years. There was only one other year, 1997, that showed a higher water content at this point, and it was an epic high water year,” Merrill added. That year the snowpack was at 175 percent of average. Peak runoff on 6/10/97 was 70,800 cfs (average is 49,753 cfs-cubic feet per second).

The data Merrill’s team works with for the Colorado River Basin impacts the company’s Cataract and Westwater canyons and Green River trips. Based on similar snow pack reports, predictions are also favorable for Idaho’s popular rafting rivers, the Salmon and the Snake.

The high water gives Western River Expeditions greater flexibility to match up rafting experience with the level of white water. And it can switch out the craft it uses depending on the water’s intensity. For the beginning of this season Merrill expects that the J Rig, the largest craft in their fleet (offering greater stability than smaller oar and paddle rafts), would be the vessel of choice for Cataract Canyon.

Just south of Moab, UT, where the Green and Colorado Rivers meet in a majestic setting called "The Confluence," Cataract Canyon begins. Bolstered by the Green River, the Colorado River doubles its force, and carves a deep 100-mile-long chasm through the heart of Canyonlands National Park. Here guests experience the thrill of class III-V whitewater.

Cataract Canyon 4-day trip mixes running the rapids with off-river hikes to ancient Native American ruins and pictographs. Guests conclude this adventure with a stunning flight over Canyonlands National Park on the return to Moab. The trip covers 100 river miles with the pleasures of camping under the stars and dining on chef-prepared meals adding extra splashes for the memory bank. The 2017 per person rate is Adult (16+) $1475 / Youth (10-15) $1095. The minimum age is 12 during high water (May and June) dropping to 10 (July and August).

Other rafting trips on the Colorado and neighboring Green Rivers in Utah are also expected to have higher than average water levels this spring and summer. They include Desolation Canyon on the Green River and Westwater Canyon on the Colorado River just upriver from Cataract Canyon. Trips on Idaho rivers include

Western River Expeditions’ flagship river trip is the Grand Canyon.  Because the flow is controlled by the Glen Canyon Dam, spring and summer fluctuations based on snow pack upriver aren’t usually a factor. This means that rafters experience steadier, predictable water levels all season-long. While the 2017 season is nearly sold out, the company is now accepting reservations for 2018 on its Grand Canyon trips. These are

Western River Expeditions Offers Seven Reasons Why Gift of Family Rafting Trip Promises to be Gift That Keeps on Giving

SALT LAKE CITY, Dec. 14, 2016 – Here’s a holiday gift that just keeps on streaming. First comes the planning and anticipation; second comes the enjoyment of an outdoor experience that most always exceeds expectations; and third come the memories and reminiscing that can last a lifetime.

The gift? A family rafting trip.

Veteran outfitter Western River Expeditions (http://www.westernriver.com/) shares seven reasons why a rafting vacation is ideal as a one-size-fits-all gift this year.

1.  A family consisting of assorted ages can all enjoy a rafting adventure on the Green River in Desolation Canyon in Utah or on the Lower Salmon River in Idaho, both featuring the most playful of rapids, boasting huge, sandy beaches for sunning and playing once the splashing is over for the day.

2.  Shared group challenges and memories come with the fun because everyone is involved in the on-and off-water action together.

3.  This is the best example of a gift just keeps on giving. The fun begins when the gift of a trip is announced; as the adventure looms, the anticipation mounts. When everyone is sharing moments on the river, the memories are growing minute by minute to be recounted at family get-togethers well into the future.

4.  This gift gives of yourself as you share meaningful time with loved ones. And it’s a gift to one’s self as well.

5.  This trip wraps up nicely in an envelope with a colorful catalog and pre-trip information. And ideas for themed giving follow suit: rain gear, dufflebags, fleece pullovers and tees with logo imprints (all available for purchase through the outfitter’s online store.

6.  The gift of a rafting trip addresses bucket lists – yours included -- and Holiday gift lists at the same time.

7.  Holiday lights pale against star-lit nights along the river, stars that provide food for thought when it comes to the meaning of rivers and rapids and water and family and well, the universe.

For the ultimate gift of a river trip the outfitter recommends considering an adventure through the Grand Canyon. Western River Expeditions is the largest licensed outfitter operating in the Grand Canyon, introducing more people to its wonders than any other rafting company. However, space books up a year in advance for this highly coveted trip. The good news is that the 2018 season has just opened up for bookings and if the family can wait, they will have more than a year to look forward to North America’s premier river rafting vacation.  See: http://www.westernriver.com/grand-canyon-vacation
