Rafting through Utah’s Cataract Canyon To Be Extraordinary This Year, Predicts Western River Expeditions

SALT LAKE CITY, UT, April 6, 2023– Western River Expeditions reports that this year’s snowpack feeding the Colorado River Basin is the highest in over 10 years, currently standing at 151.3% percent of the historic April 6 average. This is a boon to the whitewater rafting industry and helps mitigate (at least in the short term) the effects of the two-decades-long drought that has plagued America’s Southwest.

“The prediction of higher water is fantastic news for our water storage needs and signals that river rafting adventures in Utah’s Cataract Canyon may be heating up for epic whitewater excitement this summer,” said Kam.

Wixom, former guide and current Marketing Director for Western River Expeditions.

Cataract Canyon was formed by the confluence of two of the West’s largest rivers, the Green and the Colorado. Most of the Colorado River flowing through Cataract Canyon is not restrained by dams. (This contrasts with the flow of the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon where the water level is regulated by an upriver dam.)

“This means that with increased water flow, the class III-V rapids in Cataract Canyon only get bigger and more breathtaking!” said Wixom. “Our Cataract Canyon rafting trips, which excel when the water is high, look extremely promising already.” And the best thing Wixom points out, is that after the peak spring runoff (predicted to come for two or three weeks in mid-May to mid-June), the benefits of high water conditions may continue through most of the season.

This news is music to the ears of avid rafters who love the thrills of high-water rafting. Many of the more technical, rock-filled rapids during low water become rolling wave trains.  High water also gives rafters more time for side canyon hikes and exploring terrain around their river camps because they get to the camps faster and leave a bit later the next morning.

Brian Merrill, Western River Expedition’s CEO, added: “Cataract Canyon in the peak flows are the highest whitewater rapids in North America – big enough waves to make the 37-foot-long J-Rig do exactly what it was designed to do: stand on end and glide right over whitewater rapids that want to swallow it whole.”

Following are two itineraries in Cataract Canyon that Wixom expects will be in high demand this year because of the anticipated higher-than-normal snowpack run-off.

Cataract Canyon Express 2-Day Adventure at $895 per person for adults and youth (12+) engages high-speed, custom rafts to rapid journey through the Colorado River’s legendary 100-mile Cataract Canyon in just two days.

“This is a perfect itinerary for those with busy schedules yearning for a quick but refreshing dose of high adventure,” underscored Wixom.

Cataract Canyon 4-Day Expedition at $1,825 for adults and $1,325 for youth (10-15) is a more complete four-day rafting journey combing the beauty of Canyonlands National Park with on-river thrills. Off-river hikes include explorations of ancient Native American ruins and pictographs. Guests conclude this adventure with a stunning flight over Canyonlands National Park on the return to Moab. The trip covers 100 river miles with the pleasures of camping under the stars and dining on chef-prepared meals.

Other rafting trips on the Colorado and neighboring Green Rivers in Utah are also expected to have excellent high water levels this spring and summer. They include five day trips through Desolation Canyon on the Green River and full day trips into Westwater Canyon on the Colorado River just upriver from Cataract Canyon.

Fun Facts About Utah’s Desolation Canyon Rated One of America’s Top Rafting Adventures

SALT LAKE CITY, UT, March 28, 2023 – Ranked one of the “The 25 Best New Trips” in the World by National Geographic Adventure and one of the “Best Whitewater Rafting Trips in America” by Outside Magazine, a 5-day rafting journey down this legendary canyon with Western River Expeditions in 2023 is something to seriously consider.

And this may be the year to do it. The snowpack covering the watersheds of the Green and Colorado rivers is 143.59% of the historic March 28th average. The best it has been in over ten years.

Whether a seasoned rafter or a first-timer, this 84-mile stretch of the Green River provides an unforgettable journey through some of the most spectacular landscapes in the American West. Here are 11 fun facts about Utah’s Desolation Canyon.

1.    Utah’s Desolation Canyon, carved over millennia by the 730-mile Green River (spawned by glacial melts on the Continental Divide in the wilds of northern Wyoming), was traversed first in its entirety by the Smithsonian Institution that sent Major John Wesley Powell in 1869 to explore the canyon.

2.    Nearly 100 years later, Desolation Canyon, one of the most remote areas in the lower 48 states, was named a National Historic Landmark in 1968 as part of the centennial celebration of the Powell expedition. It is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP).

3.    Desolation Canyon and the surrounds of its accompanying Green River compose one of the most remote (no roads, towns, cell service) destinations in the continental United States.

4.    At 290,845 acres, the Desolation Canyon Wilderness Study Area (WSA) is the largest WSA managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in the contiguous 48 states.

5.    At its deepest point, a relief of over 5,000 feet (1,500 m) exists from river level to the unseen rim of the Tavaputs Plateau. This display is a result of Nature’s handiwork over 40 million years.

6.    The entire eastern side of the river and canyon (river left on descent) sits entirely on Ute Tribal Lands of the Unita-Ouray Reservation, the second largest Indian Reservation in the U.S.

7.    There are around 75 discovered archaeological sites throughout the canyon. Fremont (people foraged and planted corn here from the 7th to the 13th centuries) and Ute pictographs and petroglyphs are abundant.

8.    Fremont granaries, as well as several abandoned homesteaders' ranches, testify to the agricultural potential of riparian alluvial fan landforms sited between steep slopes and valleys. The landforms are larger in Desolation Canyon than in any other canyon of the Colorado - Green River system.

9.    Over 60 named class two and three rapids challenge boaters. The gradual increase in size and difficulty of rapids make it an ideal place for beginner to intermediate boaters to develop their skills.

10.            Elk were transplanted into the area in 1988. Today, Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep frequent the WSA. Other inhabitants are cougar, black bear, mule deer, endangered bald eagle, and peregrine falcon.

11.            David McPherson started ranching with his family up Florence Creek in 1889. The McPherson homestead sat right along the path of the Outlaw Trail, used by the infamous robbers Butch Cassidy and the Wild Bunch. Cassidy, George “Flat-Nose” Curry, Ben Morrison and Josie Bassett all spent time in the canyon hiding from the law.

A rafting adventure through Desolation Canyon is ideal for families with children as young as 5. There are weekly departures June through August, with availability on many 2023 dates. A 5-day/4-night adventure begins and ends in Moab, Utah, and includes a scenic flight that lands atop a dramatic desert plateau where the group begins a short descent on foot to the river put-in. The per person rate for adults (age 16 and up) is from $1,955 and for youth (age 5-15) from $1,255. For details please see  https://www.westernriver.com/desolation-canyon

Guests may choose to paddle themselves in two-person, inflatable kayaks or to relax in a guide-powered oar boat. They enjoy deluxe camping on broad, sandy beaches along the river bank after savoring delicious meals prepared by trained guides. Whether on the river, enjoying a hike, or chatting by the campfire, the absence of digital access to the outside world mandates that attentions focus on what’s real and natural. It’s a time to disconnect from the chaos of daily life and reconnect with what matters most.

For over 50 years Western River Expeditions has specialized as Nature’s handmaiden, providing the staff and environment and, yes, the rivers, where transformations occur. Again, this season, Western River Expeditions will host 5-day Rafting Trips through Desolation Canyon on Utah’s Green River that are proven antidotes to our too-often-virtual, over-digitalized world.

Well-Above-Average Snow Pack Feeding Colorado River System Bodes Well for the 2023 Rafting Season

SALT LAKE CITY, Feb. 14, 2023 – One whitewater rafting company is giving a big shout-out to Mother Nature.

January 2023 was a wet and snowy month over the Colorado River Watershed. As a result, the snowpack in the Upper Colorado River Basin is 122.81% of the Feb. 13 average. This represents the second-highest recorded snowfall in the past 10 years.

Late January weather in Grand Canyon National Park produced 2-3 feet of snow on the South Rim and 6-9 feet on the North Rim.

“While we still have a few months to go, this initial snowfall bodes well for a robust rafting season ahead on Utah rivers,” underscores Brandon Lake, co-owner and CMO of Western River Expeditions.

It’s been nearly a decade since a snowpack shed such an exuberant glow this early in the year. The twofold benefits of the snowpack are high water for river rafters and possible drought mitigation.

“Those who are booking our Cataract Canyon rafting trips for 2023 look like they may be in for an exciting whitewater adventure!” says Lake.

This news is music to the ears of avid rafters who love the thrills of high-water rafting. High water not only makes some rapids even more exciting, but it also gives rafters more time for side canyon hikes and exploring the terrain around their river camps because they get to the camps faster.

The river system of the Upper Colorado River Basin is built by flows from numerous western rivers. The early season snowfalls and anticipated spring snow accumulations impact Utah’s Cataract Canyon on the Colorado River, as well as Desolation Canyon on the Green River.

The potential high water gives Western River Expeditions greater flexibility to match up the craft it uses depending on the water’s intensity. For the beginning of this season the J Rig, the largest craft in their fleet (offering greater stability than smaller oar and paddle rafts), could be the vessel of choice for rafting on the Colorado River through Cataract Canyon.

Cataract Canyon near Moab, UT, begins where the Green and Colorado Rivers meet. Bolstered by the Green River, the Colorado River doubles its force and carves a deep 100-mile-long chasm through the heart of Canyonlands National Park. Here guests experience the thrill of class III-V whitewater.

Western’s Cataract Canyon4-day trip mixes running the rapids with off-river hikes to ancient Native American ruins and pictographs. Guests conclude this adventure with a stunning flight over Canyonlands National Park on their return to Moab. The trip covers 100 river miles with the pleasures of camping under the stars and dining on chef-prepared meals. The 2023 per-person rate is $1,825. For details see https://www.westernriver.com/cataract-canyon-rafting

Western’s Desolation Canyon 5-day rafting trip on the neighboring Green River in Utah is also expected to have higher-than-average water levels this spring and summer. This is Western River’s top-recommended trip for families with younger children and teens due to its playful rapids, easy side hikes and options to relax in a larger raft rowed by a professional guide or paddle your own 2-person inflatable kayak.

Western River Expeditions Celebrates a Six-Decade Relationship with Professional Travel Counselors

SALT LAKE CITY, UT, Feb. 7, 2023 – Western River Expeditions was founded in 1961 and owes much of its longevity and success to the travel trade. Western River and its sister company, Moab Adventure Center, report that bookings from travel professionals represent a consistent 20 percent of their business.

Both companies have developed strategies that yield seamless transactions for travel professionals, said Brandon Lake, co-owner and CMO.

Travel professionals who are accepted into Western River Expeditions’ and Moab Adventure Center’s network of certified resellers are then registered with their own online accounts. This enables them to log in to make reservations and check availability at any time, providing more immediate and personalized service to their clients. The company also makes it easy to promote trips online and in print with a high-resolution image gallery, fresh videos, and other marketing assets.

Western River Expeditions and Moab Adventure Center operate through a powerful online booking system called Resmark. Resmark allows travel professionals to access both Western River Expeditions and Moab Adventure Center through their own complimentary account. Within their account, they can create and manage bookings and view commission or net rate history.

Grand Canyon trips are always in high demand and fill quickly. Dates for 2024 Grand Canyon Trips are now available. 2023 season 6- and 7-day trips are full but limited spaces are still available for 3- and 4-day 2023 trips. The National Park Service regulates the number of rafting participants traveling through the Grand Canyon each year, creating space limitations.  However, there are comparable (but perhaps lesser known) rafting destinations throughout the West such as Cataract Canyon and Desolation Canyon in Utah. For families wishing to experience a river rafting trip, Desolation Canyon is arguably one of the best family rafting adventures on the planet.

The river rafting season on the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon runs from April into September. The longer 6- and 7-day trips with the thrills of class III-V rapids are open to guests as young as 12. The minimum age is 9 for 3- and 4-day trips that come with class II-III rapids. Western’s exclusive J-Rig raft provides accessibility for first-time rafters on even the largest whitewater rapids in the Grand Canyon. Rafting trips include plenty of hiking in the Grand Canyon that allows access to waterfalls, slot canyons, native ruins, and geologic wonders that the 5 million or so casual hikers from the rim will simply never see.

For details on the trips, Western River Expeditions offers complimentary Expedition Guides in PDF format (https://www.westernriver.com/expedition-guide). The comprehensive guides include river maps, overviews, full itineraries, camping and weather information, details on physical requirements, packing lists, and more.

Western River Expeditions Suggests Early-Bird Reservations For 2023 Family Rafting Vacations

SALT LAKE CITY, UT, NOV. 18, 2022 – The gurus of river rafting, Western River Expeditions, want everyone to fulfill their bucket lists with a river rafting vacation in 2023.

But there’s a catch.

The number of people fulfilling their river rafting dreams in the 2022 season exceeded pre-pandemic levels. Next year bookings are looking equally strong.

“Inquiries and bookings for the 2023 season are coming in earlier and heavier than usual. This augurs well for another upward trend in 2023 but underscores how important is for the early bird to make reservations now,” said Brandon Lake, co-owner and CMO.He underscored that family vacation dates are especially popular and are filling fast.

Why are such trips so loved by families? Lake referenced an industry colleague of Western River Expeditions who espouses the benefits that come to families who share a whitewater rafting vacation. Following is a synopsis of points made by Ben Sack, a rafting outfitter in Colorado.

Benefit #1: Family Rafting Increases Family Bonds by teaching kids to value time spent with their family; it strengthens bonds between siblings; and it can also help kids anticipate family time, rather than being dragged along to events or places that they perceive won’t interest them.

Benefit #2: Rafting Gets Kids (and Parents) Active by waking up the physical body. Adrenaline helps you to push your body and get a quality upper-body and core workout, all while enjoying every moment of paddling through exciting whitewater.

Benefit #3: White Water Rafting Connects Kids to Nature while rafting by or hiking through rugged wilderness rife with wildlife and geology.

Benefit #4: Rafting is Doable by Everyone from youngsters to seniors.

Benefit #5: White Water Rafting is FUN! When it comes down to it, the favorite benefit that comes from rafting is pretty simple: it’s a really good time!

“On a multi-day rafting trip, these benefits are accentuated,” says Lake. “Most families rate our rafting trips as one of the best family vacations they have ever experienced. Particularly today, the need for parents and children to disconnect and spend quality time together without distraction is greater than ever before.”

Here’s a sampling of Western River Expeditions’ 2023 rafting vacations with a family focus.

Green River 5-Day Desolation Canyon AdventureThis is one of the few trips anywhere that is as much fun for ages five, as it is for teens, parents and grandparents. The river and rapids on the Green River through Desolation Canyon are more fun than furious while paddling inflatable kayaks or sitting in guide-powered oar boats. There are easy hikes to Moonshiner's Cabin and abandoned ranches. Per person adult rates are from $1,955; rates for ages 5-15 are from $1,255. https://www.westernriver.com/desolation-canyon

Moab, Utah Vacation “Southwest Sampler”Several things make this a great vacation package for families, perhaps especially for those with younger children. The activities packed into this Sampler trip are perfect for getting familiar with what the Moab area has to offer. But they are also paced in such a way as to avoid feeling pushed. Top off the last two days with a trip down the Colorado River through Castle Valley. Per person adult rates are from $855; rates for ages 5-15 are from $730. https://www.westernriver.com/moab-utah-vacation-sampler

Delight in a day of ranch activities like skeet shooting, roping, horseback or ATV rides; enjoy meals prepared in the style of the west; and before bunking down in your covered wagon or cabin, enjoy cowboy entertainment. In the morning, ride a helicopter over the edge of the canyon rim and plunge into three days of river rafting on the Colorado River through Grand Canyon. Per person adult rates are from $2,275 for all, minimum age 9. NOTE: 2023 dates are sold out. 2024 season dates open for bookings on Tuesday, November 29, 2022, at 6:00 PM Mountain Time. https://www.westernriver.com/grand-canyon-rafting-tour

A simple evening menu, designed especially for kids, is available an hour before the more elaborate meal for the adults. Western River Expeditions Opens Reservations on Nov. 29, 2022, For 2024 Grand Canyon Rafting

SALT LAKE CITY, UT, Nov. 15, 2022 – The date to remember is Tuesday, November 29, 2022. The time is 6:00 PM Mountain Time (that’s 5:00 PM Pacific, 7:00 PM Central, and 8:00 PM Eastern).

The occasion?

This is the day and hour when the public for the first time can access and book Western River Expeditions’ 2024 calendar of Grand Canyon rafting vacations. They can explore the full schedule of 2024 Grand Canyon raft trip departures and have a few dates ready for the evening kickoff on November 29.

This is the annual opportunity to secure reservations now for what many rafting aficionados consider the world’s top river rafting experience. Historically demand outpaces supply and within hours of the reservation window opening, many departures are sold out. For trip details, please see https://www.westernriver.com/grand-canyon-rafting.

“People ask us why we are taking reservations now for 2024; why not just focus on 2023?” said Brandon Lake, co-owner and CMO. “Due to these high-demand trips, we have to look two years ahead. Western’s 6 and 7-Day Grand Canyon trips for 2023 are sold out, and space is very limited in the upcoming season for shorter departures of 3 and 4 days.”

Rafting trips include plenty of hiking in the Grand Canyon that allows access to waterfalls, slot canyons, native ruins and geologic wonders that the 5 million or so casual hikers from the rim will simply never see.

For details on the trips, Western River Expeditions offers complimentary Expedition Guides in PDF format (https://www.westernriver.com/expedition-guide). The comprehensive guides include river maps, overviews, full itineraries, camping and weather information, details on physical requirements, packing lists, and more.

Grand Canyon trips are always in high demand and fill quickly.

Western River Expeditions Anticipates High Demand For 2023 River Rafting Adventures

SALT LAKE CITY, UT, Sept. 13. 2022 – Western River Expeditions reports that 2022 river rafting season numbers are back to pre-pandemic highs.

“Based on our booking trends, we predictthat 2023 reservations will likelysurpass those of 2022. While this is good news for our company, it’s not necessarily good news for people who wait until the last minuteto make a reservation with us,” said Brandon Lake, co-owner and CMO.

To make it easy for early birds, by mid-summer, Western River Expeditions had already posted dates and prices for the 2023 season. See Western River Expedition’s website for details.

“Our most coveted whitewater rafting adventures are our 3, 4, 6, and 7-day departures through the Grand Canyon. As of early September, 95 percent of these 2023 departures are already sold out,” he said.

What does this mean for next year’s wanna-be river rafters?

“Act now,” he advised. “There are still a few dates available on our three and 4-day Grand Canyon expeditions.”

In addition to adventures through the Grand Canyon, Western River Expeditions also brings guests on whitewater adventures through Utah’s Desolation Canyon and Cataract Canyon and onto iconic rivers in Idaho and Oregon. “As these rivers tend to carry less name recognition than Grand Canyon, they have more space available for 2023 and are excellent options for an unforgettable summer adventure,” says Lake.

While the locales differ geographically, the elements of Western River Expeditions’ adventures reflect the company’s 61 years of commitment to pleasure, safety and the environment. Following are a few of the many star-studded predictables that clients have come to enjoy over the decades:

  • All-inclusive adventures are packed with meals, equipment (camping and rafting) and entertainment. No need to keep a wallet handy to enjoy all there is on these vacations. First-class amenities are included in the trip price: deluxe tents and cots, comfortable camp chairs, delicious Dutch-oven dinners, buffet breakfasts and lunches, expertly-trained guides and top-quality rafts and equipment.
  • Character and training yield the best guides and leaders in the business. Western's claim to the best guides and trip leaders is not taken lightly; it is supported by rigorous selection and in-depth training sharply defined by six decades of experience. Each Western guide undergoes nearly 300 hours of training before escorting their first guest down the river. This training includes swift water rescue certification, CPR and First Aid Certification, a state licensing test, food handler's education, on-river cooking courses, geology and interpretation classes, and Western's renowned custom guide-training program. The men and women who lead Western’s trips are intelligent, personable, fun, responsible and dedicated. They are a source of endless knowledge and fun,as well as great role models for kids and young adults.
  • No car required. Simply get yourself to the starting destination by flying or driving, and Western will take care of the rest. Guests love not having to worry about the stresses of travel logistics during their trip.
  • The pros take over vacation planning details. Once a reservation is made for a Western River Expeditions river rafting vacation, guests receive helpful vacation planning details about suggested modes of travel to the meeting place, where to stay, where to dine and what to do pre and post raft trip. Guests just need to get to a gateway city and the pros will take it from there.
  • Exemplary al fresco dining experiences are assured. Like fine dining on vacation? On a rafting trip, one of the best surprises is that guests dine well – without having to roll up their sleeves to prep or cook. Think waking to steaming coffee before digging into stacks of flapjacks, fresh fruit, and chef-prepared eggs. Western's guides are not only trained river professionals, they're talented campfire cooks as well. A selection of fresh meats and cheeses, delicious breads, along with crisp vegetables and a variety of spreads satisfy hearty lunchtime appetites. Dinner menus include grilled chicken, tender steaks, savory pasta or fresh fish accompanied by salad, seasoned vegetables, and side dishes. Dutch-oven cakes and cobblers deliciously top things off.
  • A real disconnect is in store. Think the pure sights and sounds of nature with no cell service, streaming Internet or social media distractions. Many guests find this one of the most refreshing aspects of a Western River adventure. It’s one of the few vacations that forces you to a well-deserved, full disconnect.
  • The night sky like you’ve never seen it before. With no artificial lights to screen the heavens, guests see more stars, planets and meteorites than they could ever have imagined.

Annually from March through October, Western River Expeditions escorts more people down the Colorado River on professionally guided rafting trips in Utah and Arizona than any other rafting operator in the world. It is one of the largest licensed outfitters for trips in the Grand Canyon and the largest single tour provider in Moab, Utah (think half and full-day trips on the Colorado River), through its division Moab Adventure Center.

However, Western River Expeditions, as with other tour operators, has to operate within the restrictions of its permits through the National Park Service, Forest Service, and Bureau of Land Management. These limits may be adequate in normal times but spots are now being quickly snapped up by an unprecedented surge of demand following pandemic lockdowns, record breaking heat waves that call for water-based recreation and an exploding demand to visit national parks.

One Last Chance for Summer Fun – Western River Expeditions Announces Availability On the Colorado River through Cataract Canyon

SALT LAKE CITY, UT, Aug. 11, 2022 – Western River Expeditions’ rafting adventures on iconic rivers in the West have been in greater demand than ever this summer.

But as an exceptional rafting season begins to wind down, the good news is that there is still some availabilityin August and September for enjoying the Colorado River through Cataract Canyon in the heart of Canyonlands National Park. You can still book Cataract Canyon 4-Day departures on Aug. 16 and Aug. 23, and Sept. 9 and Sept. 13. Rates from $1,755 for adults and $1,285 ages 10-15 include rafting, hiking, camping, meals transfers and a scenic return flight over Canyonlands National Park.

Although Cataract Canyon may not have the name recognition of the Grand Canyon, it’s a favorite of Western River’s guides. Kam Wixon, Marketing Director for Western River Expeditions, recently hosted a Q&A with his guides. Here’s what they’re telling him.

What makes a Cataract Canyon rafting trip so special?

  • Shadrach: It’s the element of surprise. After hours of what feels like floating down the river, suddenly we’re hit with back-to-back whitewater and seemingly relentless rapids.
  • Kelly: Here we can ride through really big white water, an experience that’s hard to find anywhere else.

How big is the whitewater in Cataract Canyon?

  • Shadrack: There’s nowhere else in North America that can rival Cataract Canyon for the size of its waves in the spring. Later in the summer, it’s not as intimidating, but it’s still a fun ride.

If the volume of the waves changes from spring to fall, does this make a difference in the kinds of rafts used?

  • Shadrack: We use a bigger boat during the May-June spring runoff. Western’s patented J-rig, a 37’ x 18’ boat with a 30-horsepower motor, allows us to drive big water, and guests who are seated down front can be comfortable.  Really this is the most comfortable boat in the canyon.
  • Kelly: When the water is lower, we use oar boats and paddle boats instead of larger J-rigs.
  • Haley: When you have six to 10 people all working in a paddle boat and come into the rapids, you learn teamwork real fast.
  • Jeff: In a paddle boat we feel every single wave. It’s like a roller coaster ride. Doesn’t matter if you’re 80 or 10, everyone loves the sheer fun of being part of a team.

We also explore the landscapes around the river. What is your favorite hike?

  • Megan: On one big hike that we call the loop hike, we leave the rafts and begin a climb off the river to a point where we can see both sides of the canyon and the river looping through it. We can see where we’ve come from and where we’re going next. This is one of my favorite hikes in Cataract Canyon.

What makes Cataract Canyon unique among river trips?

  • Jeff: Some river rafting trips offer the biggest, most memorable experiences. Cataract Canyon is the kind of big experience that can make you feel like an early explorer, like John Wesley Powell, like you’re the first people on this river. And you and your family and crew get to experience this all together. Over four days, it just happens. People bond. They learn to care for each other. The river, the canyon, the night sky all play their part in helping people step outside of their comfort zones and actually change.
  • Shadrach: You can choose your level of adventure by the season. But it’s the being here and hanging out together that is also part of the excitement.

About Cataract Canyon:  Just south of Moab, Utah, where the Green and Colorado Rivers meet in a majestic setting called “The Confluence,” Cataract Canyon begins. Bolstered by the Green River, the Colorado River doubles its force and carves a deep, 100-mile-long chasm through the center of Canyonlands National Park. Over this 100-mile course guests experience class III-V Colorado River whitewater. On land, there are opportunities to explore Native American ruins and fascinating pictographs.

Beat the Heat! Western River Expeditions Suggests Rafting the Alpine Rivers of Idaho and Oregon

SALT LAKE CITY, July 26, 2022 – What a cool thought! River rafting through the evergreen forests in the mountain air during the heat of summer.

Rippling into late summer and fall 2022, Western River Expeditions reports an excellent choice of dates and departures on three mountain rivers in the Pacific Northwest - options for rafting in Idaho and rafting in Oregon. These are the Salmon River in Idaho, the Snake River through Hells Canyon on the Idaho/Oregon border and the Rogue River in southern Oregon.

Along with refreshing, crystal-clear waters, Western River Expeditions underscores six reasons clients are well advised to book adventures this season on these mountain rivers.

  • Water levels are good and as of mid-summer stand at normal due to a very wet, cool spring.
  • Ideal temperatures circulate in these alpine river regions. The average daily high is around 74°F on the Rogue from mid-June to mid-September. The hottest month of the year on the Salmon is July with an average high of 84°F and low of 50°F.
  • The 2022 fire season looks favorable, again thanks to an above-average moist and cool spring and early summer.
  • The fish are biting! Fishing the Salmon River is best in summer and fall. Steelhead and Chinook salmon and bull and cutthroat trout are prevalent. The Rogue is renowned for having some of the West Coast’s most reliable salmon and steelhead fishing.
  • There’s a wide choice of departures still available for the remainder of the season.
  • Lodge-to-lodge options are available for non-campers on Rogue rafting adventures. “We get that camping isn’t everyone’s cup of tea,” says Brandon Lake, Vice President and CMO of Western River Expeditions. “Some prefer to enjoy the pristine wildness of the river and canyons during the day then tuck into a real bed, instead of sleeping under canvass at night.”

About Oregon’s Rogue River:  Located in southern Oregonnear Medford and Ashland, home of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, the Rogue remains so remote that boats deliver the mail in some regions where the river is the only road. Wildlife sightings may include otter, deer and black bear. Guests raft this legendary waterway along 45 miles, with whitewater classified Class II-IV. Rainy winters and sun-filled summers create conditions along the Rogue’s course that begins near Crater Lake in the Cascade Mountains and runs westerly through southern Oregon to the Pacific Ocean. Oregon Rafting: Rogue River Lodge to Lodge is a four-day adventure daily on the river with comfortable lodge accommodations at night. The rate from $1,461 for adults and $1,392 for ages 7-16 includes rafting, hiking, meals, lodge accommodations and all applicable taxes and fees. For details, please see https://www.westernriver.com/rogue-river-lodge-trip.

About Idaho’s Middle Fork of the Salmon River: Flowing untamed through a land so rugged that any attempts at settlement have failed, the Middle Fork is truly a legend among the whitewater rivers of the world. This pure, clear, free-flowing river drops 3,000 feet over its 100-mile course through the remote and spectacular River of No Return Wilderness, the largest Wilderness in the lower 48 states. A 5- or 6-Day Middle Fork Salmon adventure draws an international clientele to class III-V Idaho whitewater rapids. The rate from $2,720 for adults and from $2,620 for ages 7-15 includes rafting, hiking, meals and camping. For details, please see https://www.westernriver.com/middle-fork-salmon-river.

About Idaho’s Lower Salmon River: The perfect family trip, this river journey explores the final miles of the Salmon River before it joins the mighty Snake River on the way to the Columbia River. The trip covers 53 miles on the Salmon plus 21 miles on the Snake. The rate for a 5-Day Lower Salmon escape is from $1,890 for adults and from $1,790 for age 5-15 and include Class II-III rafting, hiking, meals and camping. For details, please see https://www.westernriver.com/lower-salmon-river.

About Idaho’s Main Salmon RiverRich in scenic wonders and history, the Main Salmon River drops 1,200 feet in 89 miles.  Known as “The River of No Return, the river sports blue-green waters with Class II-IV rapids.  The rate for a 5-Day Main Salmon adventure is $1,940 for adults and $1,445 for ages 6-16. This includes rafting, hiking, meals, camping and shuttle service transfers. For details, please see https://www.westernriver.com/main-salmon-river.

About Hells Canyon of the Snake River (Idaho/Oregon border): Cutting the deepest river gorge in North America is Hells Canyon of the Snake River that forms the border of Oregon and Idaho. River travelers journey 79 river miles through the land of the Nez Perce and bounce through Class II-IV rapids, some of the largest found in the Pacific Northwest. The rate for five days is from $1,595 for adults and $1,515 for ages 8 to 15. Included are rafting, hiking, meals and camping. For details, please see https://www.westernriver.com/hells-canyon.
