Austin Adventures’ Guests Play through Game of Thrones Sites on July 2018 Tour of Northern Ireland

BILLINGS, MT – Jan. 11, 2018– Fans of HBO’s blockbuster, Game of Thrones may have to wait until 2019 and the final season to find out who wins, but thanks to active travel pioneer Austin Adventures, they can visit many of the places where the action takes place during the summer of 2018. Journey to Winterfell, a new eight-day multisport adventure will visit many of the iconic set locations combined with world class hiking and immersion into the history and culture of Northern Ireland.

This July 1-8, 2018 hiking and touring journey through Northern Ireland thrusts Throners (guests) into the television drama as they visit castles and landscapes where filming for the series took place. The vast majority of the epic was filmed in Northern Ireland and each and every local has a personal Game of Thrones story to share.

Throughout this journey Throners collect “stamps” for their Game of Thrones passports. By journey’s end they will have 10 “stamps” representing film sites visited on this real-life journey of the imagination.

The per person, double, rate is $3,998 (single supplement $580) inclusive of double occupancy rooms with private baths, all meals except one dinner on own your own, fully trained, first-aid certified professional guides, full vehicle support and land transportation during the trip, luggage service, pre-departure and packing information, incidental expenses such as taxes, dining and housekeeping gratuities, local partner and expert gratuities and national park entrance and permit fees. For complete details see: https://www.austinadventures.com/packages/ireland-game-thrones.

To assure that hearts aren’t lost to mythology, the tour’s first stop out of the gateway city Dublin, is Downpatrick where St. Patrick is buried. Then let fly the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, including an immersion in archery at the original film set in make-believe Winterfell (Castle Ward). After libations at three pub stops, Throners collect three “stamps” on Day 1 before bedding down in Enniskeen at the foot of the Mourne Mountains, the site on Day 2 of a seven-mile hike along an old smuggling route.

Throners collect “stamps” galore along the world-famous Wild Atlantic Way. A photo stop at Carrickfergus Castle (built in 1177) launches the stunning coast drive. Next is a tea break at Ballygalley Hotel, the oldest, continuously inhabited castle in Ireland (dating to 1625), followed by lunch near The Stormlands aka Cushendun Caves. Blasts of adrenalin follow while walking across Carrick A Rede (rope bridge) strung between two cliffs along the sea and before passing along a creepy avenue of beech trees called Dark Hedges (in situ since the 18th century).

An eight-mile hike around the cliff tops of Murlough Bay and Fairhead look over to Scotland before meandering by a traditional Clachan (cluster of small white-washed houses). On another day Throners may hike 11 miles across Giant’s Causeway, a natural sculpture playground of basalt columns created by volcanic activities millennia ago in the Atlantic Ocean. This is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Older, perhaps, than the mythology of the game Throners are playing here is the prehistoric (3,200BC) burial chamber at Newgrange, predating Stonehenge. Nearby is Ireland’s oldest community, Drogheda, settled before the 12th century. Another urban center Throners visit is Belfast, home of Titanic Studios where much of the filming for the series was done. This city is also the birthplace of the doomed ocean liner Titanic.

Timing Just Isn’t Right to Travel to Cuba? Austin Adventures Points to Alternative Destinations with Comparable Culture, History, Arts and Allure

BILLINGS, MT – Jan. 3, 2018 – Staying flexible is a good strategy for life – and travel.

For example, your heart is set on experiencing the sights, tastes and sounds of Cuba. But after considerable thought, perhaps now just isn’t the right time to visit.

Because imposed tour regulations and travel limitations are the last thing anyone wants when planning a vacation, one active tour company has put a lot of thought into where to find such similar pleasures as the cuisine, culture and cigars that Cuba offers – but in other, equally alluring countries around the world.

“Cuba is one of those unique, once-in-a-lifetime trips that can’t be matched by any other experience out there. We also know there’s a lot of uncertainty regarding travel to Cuba at the moment and this makes a lot of American travelers wary. So as we look forward to the day that Americans can move more freely through Cuba, we’ve come up with other travel suggestions that won’t disappoint our savvy clients,” said Dan Austin, President of Austin Adventures, a leader in multisport and family-focused vacations here and abroad.

Dan and his veteran team at Austin Adventures’ offer these hand-picked destinations where one can source their own slice of Cuba across the globe.

If you want culture, consider Peru.  As the Cubans do, Peruvians express a fascinating culture through music, dance, clothing and celebrations. On Austin Adventures’ Peru trips, guests meet women in traditional dress at Awanacancha where the art of traditional textile weaving is kept alive. A local hacienda displays folk art from the 17th century. The historic center of Lima is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Mysteries of an ancient culture come into focus trekking the Inca Trail through the “Sun Gate” into Machu Picchu. One trip to consider: https://www.austinadventures.com/packages/peru-machu-picchu/

If you want history older than Cuba’s Spanish occupation and more dramatic than the Castro’s revolution, look toFrance and Normandy’s beaches where in 1066 William the Conqueror crossed the channel and on D Day soldiers changed history. Trip to consider: https://www.austinadventures.com/packages/france-normandy/

If you want world-class cigars don’t try to compare anything to the Cohiba but give Nicaragua’s Oliva a shot. Dan Austin, cigar aficionado in his own right, says his favorite brand includes a little Cuba. Melanio Oliva first grew tobacco in Cuba in 1886 and generations continued until the pressure from the Communist-run government forced Gilberto Oliva, Melanio’s grandson, to Nicaragua. Today Gilberto and his family are Nicaragua’s second largest grower of Cuban-seed tobacco. The trip to consider: https://www.austinadventures.com/packages/nicaragua-granada-san-juan-del-sur/

If you want beaches, think Belize. As of November 2017, hanging out on a Cuban beach doesn’t meet the license requirements for now-stipulated “People to People” engagement. So check out Austin Adventures’ Belize Adventure where the last three days of the itinerary are on Ambergris Caye in shallow Caribbean waters. Here guests can sun, swim and snorkel the second largest barrier reef in the world, just a mile away from where they stay. The trip to consider: https://www.austinadventures.com/packages/belize-hidden-valley-ambergris-caye-2/

If you want nightlife, Colombia’sBogotá is giving Havana a run for its money. In this high-altitude city, Austin Adventures’ guests stay at Cité Hotel, a short walk from Zona T, the prime nightclub district (considered relatively safe after dark). Here is literally every type of music: Electronic, Bachata, Vallenato, Pop, Reggaeton, Salsa, Hip-hop, Rock. Trip to consider: https://www.austinadventures.com/packages/colombia-bogota-cartegena/

If you want great food and to discover a new cuisine, think Croatia where, like Cuba, a food culture is driven by a resourcefulness in response to scarcity. Traditional cuisine varies by region and historical influence (think Italian, Austrian, Hungarian and Turkish). On an Austin Adventures Croatia tour, guests learn to cook a Croatian specialty such as ćevapčiči (spiced sages) with ajvar sauce, mussels and black risotto. The trip to consider: https://www.austinadventures.com/packages/croatia-dalmatian-coast/

If you want distinctive lodging, Costa Rica, in the business of accommodating Americans for many years, offers world-class resorts and hotels that are yet to arrive in Cuba. For example, on one Austin Adventures journey guests begin and end their trip near San José at Xandari Resort, located on a forest reserve in the foothills of Poas Volcano. Guests enjoy Evergreen Tortuguero Lodge, five minutes from the main entrance to Tortuguero National Park accessible only by air and water. Nearby, guests raft the world-class Pacuare River into the Rios Tropicales eco-lodge to recharge in the rainforest before ending a trip “Pura Vida” -style at the beachfront Cariblue Beach & Jungle Resort. Trip to consider: https://www.austinadventures.com/packages/women-only-costa-rica-tortuguero-to-cahuita/

If you want to sip local beverages, forego rum-based libations in lieu of Scotland where you’re sure to stop by at least one of the country’s 100 active distilleries for a wee dram of whisky. Trip to consider: https://www.austinadventures.com/packages/scotland-scottish-highlands/

If you want activities less focused on people-to-people and more on the great outdoors, try out one of Austin Adventures’ many U.S. national parks programs. Depending on where you travel, your days will be filled with hiking, biking, horseback riding, whitewater rafting, kayaking, zip lining or swimming. The trip to consider: https://www.austinadventures.com/packages/yosemite-national-park-family/

If you want UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Cuba tops the list and on an Austin Adventures trip here guests visit four of nine sites in eight days. But Southeast Asia also has its fair share of classified must-sees -- 37 UNESCO World Heritage Sites in nine countries. In Indonesia, for example, guests discover Borobudur, a Mandala-shaped monument near Yogykarta that immortalizes Buddhist cosmology in stone. On Austin Adventures’ Laos/Cambodia trip, guests visit Luang Prabang, Laos’s most sacred town, and Angkor Wat, the grand temple complex of Cambodia. A visit to Vietnam reveals Ha Long Bay’s dramatic limestone karst pillars, the ancient, peaceful old town of Hoi An and the Complex of Hue Monuments.  A staff favorite trip to consider: https://www.austinadventures.com/packages/laos-cambodia/

Austin Adventures Adds Wilderness Glamping in Costa Rica to Its Growing Lineup of Upscale Multisport Tours

BILLINGS, MT – Oct. 24, 2017– The best of all worlds, including creature comforts while glamping in the wilderness, come seamlessly together on Austin Adventures’ new 8 day/7 night Costa Rica: Chiquita Glamping & Pacuare River Raft vacation. This is the latest of over 30 “online-only” trips featured on its award-winning website: https://www.austinadventures.com/.

With its newest Costa Rica program, year-round departures are flexible and may be arranged when it best fits participant’s own schedule, on a space-available basis. The per person double rate (based on a party of four or more) is from $3,998 for the core experience. Options exist to customize the itinerary to the guests’ wishes.

This luxury trip, without a lofty price tag, brings curious travelers to a country on the forefront of land and wildlife conservation. Over 25 percent of the country has been protected by the establishment of preserves, sanctuaries, refuges, and national parks. Costa Rica also offers one of the most biodiverse places in the world, Carara National Park located in the transition zone between Costa Rica’s wet southeast and hotter, drier northwest. The adventure begins here as guests explore the river basin of the River Tárcoles, which hosts one of the largest remaining populations of wild scarlet macaws in the country.

Guests then journey by boat to Isla Chiquita Glamping Resort, far off the usual tourist track. Home for three pampered nights, each large platform tent accommodation is equipped with a king bed, day bed lounger, private shower and bathroom with double sinks, and spacious lounging deck with stunning ocean views.  From this isolated island, guests visit Curú National Wildlife Refuge with pristine beaches and abundant wildlife while gliding through the still waters of a protected bay in a kayak or on a stand-up paddleboard, watching tropical birds soar overhead. One morning guests transfer to Tortuga Island where white sands contrast with brilliant Caribbean blue waters. Snorkeling is popular here, as guests marvel at surprisingly colorful crabs and lobsters as well as vibrant tropical fish.

A local flight back to mainland beckons guests to engage in the premier whitewater rafting adventure in Costa Rica – on the Pacuare River (rated by National Geographic as one of the Top 10 river trips in the world).  Here they visit the Cabecar Indian village and meet with the largest indigenous tribe in Costa Rica. A family of the community shares traditions they have used for centuries.  After zip lining comes more rafting, leading to the deluxe, eco-sensitive Pacuare Lodge, accessible only by whitewater raft. Located at the center of a series of over 1.2 million acres of wildlife reserves, the lodge is both secluded and beautiful. Guests may opt to dine 60 feet above the forest floor in a platform built on the branches of a century-old Kapok tree. This lodge enjoys National Geographic Unique Lodges of the World status.

After two nights at the lodge and a final morning on the river, guests are transferred back to San José for a last overnight at Hotel Grano de Oro, a “Tropical Victorian” house which features a world-class restaurant. Airport transfers are offered the next morning.

Three Women-Only Multi-Sport Itineraries New from Austin Adventures in 2018

BILLINGS, MT – Oct. 5, 2017– An award-winning adventure company, Austin Adventures, is tapping a nationally recognized, award-winning female guide to facilitate and lead three brand-new, action-packed itineraries created for women-only in 2018.

These journeys through wild and challenging landscapes of national parks in North America and in Costa Rica are designed to address a growing demand for women-only adventure travel, said Kasey Austin, Lead Guide and Vice President of Operations for Austin Adventures. As the designated host and facilitator for these new programs, she will bring to each trip her leadership and inspirational skills that include, among others, the annual training of each of Austin Adventures’ guides. Included in her many accomplishments, Outside Magazine recognized Kasey as the World’s Top Family Guide in 2014. She holds an undergraduate degree in Education from the University of Montana in Missoula where she was distinguished as a Presidential Leadership Scholar.

Women-only travel is on the rise according to industry expert Marybeth Bond, author of The Gutsy Traveler. “Whether we are single or married, career women or stay-at-home moms, traveling with other women is empowering. Statistics show that 75% of all those who take cultural, adventure or nature trips are women,” Bond reports. Furthermore, “…24 percent of American women have taken a girlfriend getaway in the past three years, and 39 percent of American women plan on taking one in the next three years. Women are traveling to more exotic destinations, doing more adventurous activities and increasingly traveling alone.”

Kasey Austin concurs. “Over the last few years, we’ve seen a trend in everyday women taking on the world of adventure travel by storm. There’s nothing more empowering than taking a trip with other like-minded women who challenge you to push just beyond your comfort zone,” Austin said. “Women used to be portrayed as delicate figures who booked a spa vacation with the ladies for a week. Now they are looking to challenge themselves and their friends by pushing their limits together.”

Suitable for women age 16 and older, the new line-up of Austin Adventures’ women-only trips include:

Costa Rica - Tortuguero to Cahuita National Park, March 17-25, 2018: Over nine active days, women kayak the canals of Tortuguero National Park, paddle class II-IV rapids of the Pacuare River, rappel thundering waterfalls, zip line through canopies, snorkel in Caluita National Park and bike along the beach in Puerta Viejo. The per person double rate is from $3,498. For more information see: https://www.austinadventures.com/packages/costa-rica-tortuguero-to-cahuita/

Utah - Bryce Canyon & Zion, May 20-25, 2018: For six days in the heady landscape of other-worldly rock formations capped with pure air and star-filled nights, women bike and hike together while being treated to one breath-taking view after another. The per person double rate is from $2,798. For more information see: https://www.austinadventures.com/packages/utah-brycezion/

Glacier National Park Vacation Package, July 1-6, 2018: Over six days women cozy up to what the Native Americans call “Shining Mountains,” a region close to the heart of Kasey Austin and her company that has roots deep in this Montana soil. Ladies hike backcountry trails, raft the unspoiled waters of the Flathead, bike and even cruise by train through the mountainous scenes of the premier UNESCO World Heritage Site of northwestern Montana. The per person double rate is from $3,198. For more information see: https://www.austinadventures.com/packages/montana-glacier-np/

“I am the biggest advocate for girls ‘getting after it’ and proving they can do anything the boys can do when it comes to adventure. My goal is to get women hooked on adventure by overcoming obstacles like Angel's Landing in Zion or biking over Going-to-the-Sun Road in Glacier, together!” she added.

All itineraries provide, among others, double occupancy rooms with private baths, all breakfasts, most lunches and dinners, the services of an all-female crew of guides, including Kasey Austin, and of knowledgeable local partners, vehicle support and land transportation during the trip, Austin Adventures T-shirt and luggage tags, and pre-departure and packing information. See: http://info.austinadventures.com/women-only-adventures.

Exhilarating outdoor adventures that blend with cultural interactions are intrinsic to other new itineraries in Africa, Asia, Europe and South America.  Austin Adventures’ close-to-home programs continue to embrace US and Canadian national parks.See:https://www.austinadventures.com/new-2018-departures/.

Austin Adventures Launches Utah – Mighty Five National Parks

BILLINGS, MT – Sept. 19, 2017– Creating ‘wow’ moments for travelers is this tour operator’s stock in trade. Now Austin Adventures is rethinking and rewriting the consummate national park adventure.

The award-winning company is offering, new for 2018, a one-of-a-kind, leave-the-driving-to-us tour of Utah embracingfive must-see National Parks. This is an opportunity over eight days to not just visit but to deeply explore and hike Canyonlands, Arches, Capitol Reef, Bryce Canyon, and Zion national parks.

“We’ve been running trips in Utah for over three decades but until now doing each park separately,” said Dan Austin, founder and visionary director of Austin Adventures, the world’s leading multisport adventure company for families and adults. “We’ve taken our lead from the State of Utah’s successful Mighty Five ad campaign and responded with one of the most epic and seamless adventures we’ve ever arranged.”

The primary activities while exploring the parks include photography, hiking (up to eight miles a day) and luxuriating in the hospitality of inns that reflect their scenic location, seasoned with a polish unique to the desert West. At each breathtaking vista, the guides share their knowledge of what’s special to the region: unique geology, the movement of settlers through the area as they headed west, pictographs left by early Native Americans on canyon walls, stories of these early people and how a landscape that appears remarkable and often bizarre was sometimes a deadly challenge to early explorers.

Two Mighty Five National Parks trip departures for up to 12 adults each are scheduled June 10-17 and Sept. 9-16, 2018. Based on demand more departures may be added. Private parties and groups may also request their own exclusive departures and may opt to add in such activities as river rafting and mountain biking. The per person double rate of $3,498 ($680 single supplement) includes seven nights accommodation at some of the nation’s finest lodges located in national parks, all meals (except one on-your-own dinner); trained, first-aid certified professional guides supported by knowledgeable local partners; activity-related equipment; private vehicle support (a 15-passenger, air-conditioned van); taxes, most gratuities, and national park entrance and permit fees. The trip begins in Grand Junction, CO (GJT) and ends in St. George, UT (SGU).

“Utah is among the few places in the world that can offer so many different adventures and landscapes in such close proximity to one another,” Austin added. “Even when traveling the short distances between each park the landscape is distinct and spectacular.” Two skilled and experienced guides help point out landmarks and points of distinction while sharing stories along the way.

Canyonlands Inn in Moab, UT, is base camp for two nights while exploring Arches and Canyonlands. Hiking with guides (who also prepare al fresco feasts) over two days in the parks clears up some of the mysteries of how the red rocks and other-worldly rock formations came to be. “The Land of the Sleeping Rainbow” is the Native American name for Capitol Reef National Park distinguished by tilted buttes and jumbled rocks that can be sensed up close on a guided trek. This immersion in a vast desert landscape turns to intimate at Red River Ranch, built on the grand scale of the great western lodges.

At Bryce Canyon National Park guests will walk off bountiful breakfasts served at The Lodge at Bryce Canyon, home for two nights. This is one of the grand dames of the national parks culture, created in the 1920s and despite her years still intact and enjoying fame as a National Historic Landmark. The lodge offers unrivaled access to breathtaking views, world-class hiking trails and a tranquil wilderness. As the only lodging within the national park, all of the facilities are just steps from the stunning ancient rock formations of the Bryce Amphitheater.

The next day guests transfer into Zion through an entrance guaranteed to invoke awe while winding through the magnificent canyon walls and towering cliffs that make up this majestic park. Here is are two of the top-rated hikes in the world, Angel’s Landing and the Virgin Narrows. Home base in Zion National Park is Zion Lodge set amidst the park’s towering red rock cliffs and surrounded by spectacular 2,000-feet canyon walls.

Austin Adventures Tips Hat to Travel Agents Whose Bookings Have Doubled Over Last Year

BILLINGS, MT – Sept. 14, 2017 – Austin Adventures is tipping its hat to travel agents who have contributed to the doubling of this company’s travel agent bookings over the previous year. If increased early activity and bookings are any indication, 2018 stands to be another record breaking year for agent bookings.

Dan Austin is the founder and visionary director of Austin Adventures, the world’s leading multisport adventure company for families and adults. He attributed this aggressive increase to a new generation of savvy agents who better understand the adventure travel market and appreciate the “value-add” of an Austin Adventures vacation. “Combine that with the increased efforts of the Austin Adventures team to embrace and appreciate the agent community and you have a formula for success,” said Austin.

“We are excited to see years of effort paying off and agents booking more and more adventure travel.  It is a pleasure to work in this community of travel professionals to educate and enlighten on the value of working with proven and established tour operators,” Austin emphasized.

Being a member of Virtuoso Network as a Preferred Tour Operator and Partner also helps. This network of top agents and providers is where busy professionals often turn for help when arranging the complicated itineraries typical of adventure travel. They are also the go-to resource when booking travel at the 11th hour. “We’ve seen a ton of last-minute agent requests and reservations this year and we are all too happy to help,” added Austin.

“We are really happy to see the growth and success that Austin Adventures has made with the Virtuoso Network. It takes time for new partners to get entrenched, but the relationship and overall business is growing nicely due to their marketing, communications, sales training efforts and exceptional quality of their programs,” said Cece Drummond, CTC, Virtuoso Managing Director of Destinations and Experiences.

The 29th annual Virtuoso Travel Week held Aug. 11-17, 2017, in Las Vegas hosted a record-breaking 5,693 travel professionals from 103 countries. Austin Adventures received overwhelming response to the over 800 meetings its staff conducted here.

As incentive to do business with the company, all agents regardless of affiliation receive an extra $100 bonus per guest when they book their first Austin Adventures trip. This is on top of a 12 percent commission paid to all travel agents. In the case of group or private trips, the company offers a competitive net rate that agents can sell for increased margins.

“With Austin Adventures, both my travelers and I feel like the only clients on the roster! Every guide and every experience feels tailor-made — and every one of my travelers comes home saying that theirs was the trip of a lifetime! Can’t wait to work with you all again!” said Pam Goodwin of The TravelPlanner.

Another agent had this to say about her experience, “From the first call to post trip follow up I knew I was in great hands. You folks took one of my best clients and his family on the trip of a lifetime… they are still raving about how well they were taken care of and how seamless everything appeared. And to consider how quickly it all came together! My heroes! You are ROCK STARS!” exclaimed Daria Kaldawy of Protravel International LLC.

Austin explained that his company has the most straight-forward commission policy in the business. “We pay 12% commission on all agency bookings and will never come between a travel agent and their client. Furthermore, we have a policy in place ensuring you receive commission for every trip your customer books, year after year. We will gladly pay agents the appropriatelevel commission for trips booked directly by their clients with Austin Adventures. Our only requirements are that the client confirms the agent relationship and that the agent can take over the reservation within 30 days of the client’s date of deposit.

In addition to this commission policy, Austin Adventures attracts, trains and maintains travel agent bookings and relationships by providing free familiarization tours to agents who have sold multiple Austin Adventure trips. Agents may also enjoy FAM trips for 50 percent off of the listed price (25 percent off a companion’s rate).  Throughout the year agents enjoy relationships with Austin Adventures’ staff through one-on-one trainings, quarterly agent-focused webinars, deskside visits, sales materials, PDF’s of trip pre-departure information documents with all the details and a special travel agent-only website portal that outlines information and sales guidelines. Every sales person on Austin Adventures’ team is trained to assist and take agent bookings.

Bush Rover Glamping in Tanzania - The Newest Twist to Austin Adventures’ Great Migration Safari

BILLINGS, MT – Aug. 10, 2017– Comfort in the wilderness. A concept born in Africa and forever a key element in Austin Adventures’ active tour strategy as they explore the world’s most remote and intriguing places. Guests on the company’s newest safari experience will now be introduced to the latest development in creature comfort in the wild.

On the plains of the Serengeti in Tanzania the annual beat of hooves from June through August signals “the great migration,” an exodus of an estimated 1.5 million wildebeest with thousands of zebra and antelope in tow. Austin Adventures will be there as these magnificent beasts depart the dry plains for lush grasslands of Kenya’s Masai Mara.

In summer 2018 the masters of “wow” when it comes to surprises on the trail, Austin Adventures, will ferry guests off road on a new 11-day/10-night Tanzania/Bush Rover Explorer itinerary right into the thick of this migratory action. Here a posh home, a private Bush Rover Suite, is assembled atop each Land Rover. In glamping comfort (elevated bedroom, solar powered hot water, wood paneled bathroom, lights and power sockets for battery charging) from their private balconies, guests witness “the great migration,” a feat of Nature that’s right up there with the solar eclipse and the Northern Lights. And yes, the lions roar here too. The Bush Rover Suite then folds up back to a moving vehicle and moves on to the next exciting view point, leaving no trace of human footprint. Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kbRRo5ITk3Y

Austin Adventures, the world’s leading multisport adventure company for families and adults, delivers the migration along with traditional game viewing at five other prime locations on June 8-18 and Aug. 16-26, 2018, departures. (The August departure is a President’s Tour with company founder/owner Dan Austin and wife Carol, along as hosts.) The rate is from $4,498 per person, double. Additional departures for just a minimum of two people can be arranged to fit anyone’s schedule.

The itinerary begins with a two-night stay on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro in Moshi, Tanzania. Here guests roast their own beans while visiting a coffee plantation. After transferring to a bungalow on Lake Victoria, guests are draped in the stars of an African night while enjoying five-star dinners interspersed with days full of guided bird walks and canoeing among Africa’s densest and most diverse population of birds. Leaving the water behind, a game drive into Serengeti National Park leads to the wildebeest, two glamping nights and animal-filled days. All too soon guests migrate back to Lake Victoria and a posh hotel near Mwanza that offers a Nirvana Spa, swimming pool, several restaurants and a bar.

Mixing it up isn’t just a cocktail formula, however, as Austin Adventures transfers its guests by air from Mwanza to Dar es Salaam and on to Saadani National Park, the only coastal wildlife preserve in east Africa. Here at an elephant conservancy guests can climb a 20-meter viewing tower, the Roof of Saadani, to overlook surrounding bush and the Indian Ocean. Then it’s on to this ocean where game drives mingle with walks on the beach and perhaps a dip or two. The sounds of the sea accompany sweet dreams on the last two nights at a camp run by solar power and created of recycled natural materials.

Even on the final day not a minute is wasted. Guests are up early and head straight to the Wami River for a boat safari amongst hippos and crocs before transferring to the airstrip for flight to Dar es Salaam for their onward journeys.

Collaboration of Travel Industry Visionaries Brings Donated Bicycles and Community Development to Jordan

BILLINGS, MT, May 16, 2017 – Inspiration leads to action. Moved by a passionate story from Malia Asfour, Jordan’s Tourism Board Director for North America, a small group of travel professionals gathered for dinner in Anchorage, AK for the ATTA adventure travel industry summit, came up with a plan to benefit impoverished rural communities in Jordan through the donation of used bicycles, the building of bike shops and support for tour guide and bicycle business training.

At the table that night, inspired by Asfour’s narrative, were Keith Sproule, Executive Director of A&K Philanthropy, Dan Austin, founder of Austin Adventures and the non-profit Wheels of Change that began donating bikes and operational skills to remote communities in Africa in 2010, and Muna Haddad, Director of the Jordan-based social enterprise Baraka whose mission is to support sustainable tourism while conserving and protecting cultural heritage and natural resources.

Once the fire was lit, this core group began to reach out to other tourism professionals for additional support and received commitments from World Nomads / Footprint Network who stepped up and agreed to help provide funding along with Tourism Cares who also committed to additional money to assist the establishment of community bicycle enterprises.

The wheels then began to move fast. Four months after the plan was hatched in Alaska, the first large container of 260 mountain bikes, spare parts and tools organized by Wheels of Change departed Billings, MT for Feynan, Jordan. On April 26, 2017, the container was officially opened and the process of distribution and training began. Present for the festivities were Andy Austin and Corey Meyer, two Austin Adventures guides assigned to do much of the mechanical training, along with Muna Haddad of Baraka, tasked to be the on-ground project manager. Haddad and her staff will work with the beneficiary communities, investing in setting up the shops. conducting training, oversee facilities and handle the logistics of ground transport into and around Jordan.

The plan is to establish two bike shops in Um Qais Village and Feynan. The shipping container will be repurposed as a bike rental and sales shop. Each shop established will include a bike tour component venture. So, in addition to the sale and repair of bikes at these shops, they will also be the starting point for local bike tours. Four individuals from Um Qais are currently being trained as tour guides, bringing new employment opportunities to the village.

A second container of 412 mountain bikes, spare parts and wheels sent by A&K Philanthropy in partnership with Working Bikes in Chicago was shipped on March 13, 2017. It is scheduled to arrive on or about May 28th in Madaba, Jordan. A&K Philanthropy covered the expense of the container and shipment.

Baraka will assist in establishing another bike shop venture in Madaba as well as a bike share program at Petra University making it the first bicycle-friendly campus in Jordan.

“It's beautiful to see an idea come to life,” posted Haddad on Facebook. “This is how we change the world, one idea at a time and a lot of hard work in between.”

Jordan is seeing an increasing interest in cycling according to its tourism board. But currently only the affluent can afford to own a bike. In rural areas bikes are very scarce. Access to them at an affordable price would bring increased mobility to the population. Bikes would facilitate more students getting to school, aid in creating more commerce between communities, offer better access to health care and help create new skills and business opportunities.

Jordan is actively building partnerships with adventure travel companies, introducing new cycling itineraries and mapping out adventurous bike trails nationwide. Recently completed is the Jordan Trail, a long distance multi-use trail in Jordan that connects the length of Jordan from Um Qais in the north to Aqaba in the south. It offers 40 days of uninterrupted hiking over more than 650 kilometers of trail, travelling through 52 villages and towns on its way.

All of this will be showcased at the Adventure Travel Trade Association’s AdventureNEXT Near East, May 15-17, 2017. A&K Philanthropy’s Keith Sproule and others will present the bike donation initiative at the conference and use it as a case study on how such strategic partnerships can successfully benefit grass-roots development and tourism in countries such as Jordan.
