Arches National Park preserves over two thousand natural sandstone arches, including the world-famous Delicate Arch, in addition to a variety of unique geological resources and formations. In some areas, faulting has exposed millions of years of geologic history. The extraordinary features of the park, including balanced rocks, fins and pinnacles, are highlighted by a striking environment of contrasting colors, landforms and textures.

  • Canyonlands National Park

Canyonlands National Park preserves a colorful landscape of sedimentary sandstones eroded into countless canyons, mesas and buttes by the Colorado River and its tributaries. the park sits in a vast basin bordered by sheer cliffs of Wingate Sandstone.

  • Dead Horse Point State Park

  • Manti-La Sal National Forest and Mountains

Along the eastern Utah border near Moab, the La Sal Mountains rise 12,721 feet above sea level. This part of the Forest provides climatic relief to the desert of the Colorado River Plateau. Although the Slickrock may be the nation’s most famous fat-tire route, there are dozens of other rock-and-mountain roads and trails. Rides range from a few hours to three or four days. Even novice riders can sign up for relatively level, easy terrain. The Moab Adventure Center has several guided trips and information. See: http://www.moabadventurecenter.com/trips/biking

With no fixed route or determined flight path, each balloon ride is a true adventure. Add to these sensations the thrill of an undulating desert floor rising and falling below you in dramatic sheer cliffs, spires, and gaping canyon country as far as the early morning light extends.  See: http://www.moabadventurecenter.com/trips/hot-air-balloon-rides-moab-utah/

Moab Adventure Center Predicts Record Numbers This Fall On River Rafting, Mountain Biking and Four-Wheel Adventuring

MOAB, UT, Sept. 6, 2017 –Moab’s leading purveyor of outdoor adventure is coming off its best summer ever in terms of bookings and looks for this trend to continue over the upcoming fall color season.

The Moab Adventure Center reports a 35% increase in mountain biking trips sold this year in step with a nearly 50% increase in half-day Hummer Safaris and a 15% uptick in overnight river rafting adventures on the Colorado River.

“And this was over the summer months when tourism to Moab runs high along with the daytime thermometer,” reports Brandon Lake, company CMO.  “We can’t wait for the fall, the turning colors and more moderate temperatures as we expect this trend will continue.”

Colorado River rafting, redrock mountain bike escapes and four-wheel safaris continue through the end October when the quiet season finally descends.

However, any quiet here is short-lived, reports Moab Adventure Center.

“Moab is the adventure world that never sleeps,” says Jamie Pearce, Manager of the Moab Adventure Center, the region’s one-stop-shop for activities, gear and advice for exploring the slick rock surroundings bounded by Arches and Canyonlands National Parks.

One of the most exciting times of year here is Autumn when the yellow cottonwoods along the Colorado River and the golden aspens of the La Sal Mountains play with the reds and oranges of this multi-colored terrain. A perfect fall getaway is enhanced with cooler days and increased elbow room in the national parks.

Through late October visitors can enjoy scenic rafting on Colorado River’s warmer water and playful but not difficult rapids. Available are half-day (morning or afternoon from $62 per person), full-day (from $94 per person including barbeque lunch) and overnight (from $273 per person) guided and outfitted excursions. For details please see http://www.moabadventurecenter.com/trips/rafting/.

With temperatures in the mid-70s to mid-80s, visitors turn to mountain biking packages for varied ability levels that lead into backcountry vistas and terrain. The per person rate is from $99. For details please see http://www.moabadventurecenter.com/trips/biking/.

Hummer® 4x4 Adventures (thru October), from $80 per person, yield spectacular off-road views of the towering La Sal Mountains on the Utah-Colorado border. For details please see http://www.moabadventurecenter.com/trips/hummer/.

The Moab Area Travel Council reports that a heightened demand for accommodations comes with cooler weather in September and October and in the first two weeks of November. Also popular are Presidents Day Weekend in February and some March, April and May weekends. The region’s 3,438 bed count is expected to grow in 2018 by 500 additional hotel rooms and over 60 overnight vacation rentals. A goal is to grow the transient room tax by expanding the bed base to support an increasing year-round demand. In addition, each visitor spends on average $130 a day ($52 on meals and $78 on transportation and other, excluding lodging/accommodations/tours).

To speed things up so people can slow themselves down, the region now has scheduled daily air service from Denver, CO, and Salt Lake City, UT.

Moab Adventure Center Helps People Gain Toe Holds on Rocks – and in Life With Rock Climbing and Canyoneering Vacations

MOAB, UT, Aug. 14, 2017– Knowing how to source and grab a toe hold is a strategy for success in rock climbing – and in life.

Moab Adventure Center sets people up for success in the climbing world with two active vacation plans available from April and into October that are focused on canyoneering and on beginner and intermediate-level rock climbing. Professional instructors introduce or review the fundamentals of climbing based on client experience, then adapt the climbing or canyoneering experience accordingly.

People from around the world come to experience rock climbing and canyoneering in Moab, UT, a region gifted with two national parks, Canyonlands and Arches, where rocks and natural stone monuments combine to create unparalleled learning adventures.

With these sport vacation programs, the Moab Adventure Center (http://www.moabadventurecenter.com/) is responding to a national demand for outdoor climbing programs promulgated by such TV shows as NBC’s “American Ninja Warrior” and by the growth of commercial indoor climbing centers (as of August 2016 there are 951 indoor climbing gyms in the US and Canada). According to Climbing Business Journal (June). In 2016,4.6 million people participated in sport climbing, bouldering or indoor climbing. These pursuits are now more popular than gymnastics and track and field, and they are giving CrossFit a run for its money. The International Olympic Committee has announced that it will fold climbing into the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics.

In support of this fast-growing trend, the Moab Adventure Center offers these two beginner to intermediate half-day climbing opportunities:

Moab Canyoneering - Ephedra's Grotto is a five-hour immersion that begins with a 2.5-mile downhill hike through ancient petrified sand dunes leading to a dry sand and rock wash. Quickly the wash disappears over an edge, plunging into the depths of a hidden chasm. "We go down there?" is the usual question after peering over the edge. “Yes.” A 90-foot rappel is the first obstacle in reaching the entrance to the Grotto. Now, almost totally enclosed in a small stone room, adventurers exit to find their next challenge, a 120-foot rappel into a green canyon below via a natural stone bridge! Detailed rappelling instruction and a back-up safety system allow even the first-time canyoneer the opportunity to experience this adrenalin-charged activity. Insights into geology, plant life and natural history provide depth to this adventure that concludes at a spring-fed stream. See: http://www.moabadventurecenter.com/trips/rock-climbing/canyoneering.php.

Moab Rock Climbing is a half-day (four hour) adventure that introduces the mental and physical power of rock climbing to beginners or provides a refresher course to more experienced rock climbers. The program covers the essentials: equipment use and care, knots and rope work, basic belaying and descending, all while improving face and crack climbing techniques. The course utilizes climbing areas that allow climbers to transition from a climbing gym to real rock.  Guests can choose to learn specific skills or be challenged with a vertical workout. A variety of routes and a relaxed atmosphere encourages progress at an individual pace. Children as young as five may participate. See: http://www.moabadventurecenter.com/trips/rock-climbing/basic-climbing.php.

Participants in these programs are asked to meetat the Moab Adventure Center 15 minutes prior to departure. Gear and safety equipment and snacks and drinks are provided. The fee for adults 16 and up is $104 and for youth 10-16 $89.

A World of Awe and Adventure Surround the Colorado River in Moab, Utah

A World of Awe and Adventure Surround the Colorado River in Moab, Utah

MOAB, UT, June 22, 2017 -- The vacation mecca of Moab owes much of its allure to the Colorado River that cuts across its northern boundary. Nestled between the red rock wonders of Canyonlands and Arches National Parks and fed by the breathtaking peaks of the La Sal Mountains (Utah’s second highest range), the waters of the Colorado River offer a welcome relief to the rugged and arid desert surrounding Moab.

Says long-time resident Jamie Pearce: “The #1 attraction and must do here in Moab is the Colorado River. It would be a tragedy, I'm not joking, a real tragedy if you came to Moab and didn't experience the stunning beauty of the Colorado River canyons.” Pearce, who manages the Moab Adventure Center, also co-authored Pocket Guide Moab: Last Minute Itineraries for the Undecided Traveler

Here in what’s been dubbed, “The Adventure Capital of the World,” the Colorado River’s corridors create one of the most stunning whitewater rafting destinations in the United States. From May through October, this liquid attraction offers rapids and ripples for all ages, whether on adrenaline-pumping whitewater, or a leisurely jet boat tour across calm waters or something in between – like on a paddleboard, she explains. Once everyone is comfortable, guests push off, paddling past towering sandstone cliffs, catching the occasional glimpse of a great blue heron, a bighorn sheep, or a climber scaling the rock walls along the river’s edge. For those who prefer just to float along, rubber duckies (inflatable kayaks) are provided. These are half-day adventures at $81 for 16 and up and $51 ages 20-13. For details please see http://www.moabadventurecenter.com/trips/moab-stand-up-paddle-board-tours/

Roadwork in Arches National Park Creates Challenges for Visitors - Moab Adventure Center Adds Programs, Suggests Alternatives

Extensive Road Construction Projects Close Park Roads from 7 am to 7 pm Sunday through Thursday through November

MOAB, UT, April 26, 2017– The biggest attraction in Moab, Utah is Arches National Park. Last year this international icon drew a record-breaking 1,585,718 visitors who explored the park both day and night. In 2017 the region anticipates even more visitors. However, because of road crews working here at night, explorations of Arches will be limited to 12 daylight-only hours (7 a.m. to 7 p.m.) Sunday through Thursday.

One company already has plans in place to assure that visitors won’t be disappointed because of the limited park access that continues through Nov. 30, 2017.

“Word has gotten out that Moab is super cool,” says Jamie Pearce, manager of Moab Adventure Center (http://www.moabadventurecenter.com/). “We’re ready for the crowds. However, especially with the challenges tourists will face this year, we are here to help educate visitors to the fact that there is so much more to do in Moab than Arches. Also open for exploration nearby are Canyonlands National Park, Deadhorse Point State Park, and Manti-La Sal National Forest, just to name a few.”

To help adjust for evening park closures, Moab Adventure Center has added a daily morning option, Arches National Park Adventure Tour that meets at the Center at 7 a.m. daily and returns at 12:15 p.m. From a special touring vehicle guests view famous landmarks and vistas while also enjoying short guided hikes to a collection of spectacular arches.

For travelers whose hearts are set on sunset, on Friday and Saturday evenings only Arches National Park Sunset Discovery via sightseeing van is available. Views of famous Balanced Rock, Courthouse Towers, La Sal Mountains, Petrified Dunes, and Panorama Point highlight the trip. Short guided walks to the North and South Window Arches, Turret Arch, and the legendary Delicate Arch Overlook only get better as the setting sun paints the surrounding sandstone monoliths and mountains brilliant hues of red and orange.

The local experts at the Moab Adventure Center also suggest a Sunset Hummer Safari that winds guests through sandstone hills, washes and draws outside of town before serving refreshments at a spectacular vista.

“If visitors are not interested in being driven, we’ll help them understand the park layout and assesses how much/little activity and time they want to spend in Arches. Once we have that understanding and present them with all the options, we can help them build the perfect Moab itinerary for their budget and desires,” Pearce adds.

Other ways to experience the park in daylight hours includes a 30-minute flightseeing option, Arches and Towers 30 min Tour, over classic formations such as Courthouse Towers, North and South Window Arches, Delicate Arch, Devil's Garden, the Colorado River, Fisher Towers, and Castle Valley.

Hopping on mountain bikes is also an option. For example, Courthouse Loop: Easy is a great introductory ride that’s perfect for novices or families with younger children that overlooks the Windows section of Arches National Park.

Another option for exploring Arches might be signing up for a Private Photography / Scenery Tour. Guides assure that guests will be able to position cameras for the most photogenic views.

“When ultimate flexibility, privacy and overall control matter, a private, custom trip is the best answer,” adds Pearce.

“Of course,” she points out, “the signature trip from Moab Adventure Center is a rafting adventure down the Colorado River which borders Arches National Park to the southeast as it cuts through Castle Valley.” Offered are half and full day trips as well as a popular overnighter with a full-service camp set up on a sandy beach.

MOAB, UT, March 22, 2017 – The region’s largest vacation and activity provider, Moab Adventure Center, is embracing the latest trend in group travel – the private, custom- designed tour. They report that more and more clients are now selecting experiences singular to just their group of friends, family and co-workers.

“Over the past several seasons we’ve seen a substantial increase in honeymooners, small groups of friends and couples, VIP's and families requesting private, custom-built itineraries,” according to Jamie Pearce, manager of Moab Adventure Center (http://www.moabadventurecenter.com/). “We've planned trips to epic vistas and trails our guides have discovered where we've jeeped to the top, rappelled down, and biked back to the trailhead. We've 4x4'd in musicians for entertainment and prepped gourmet dinners surrounded by amazing scenery. We've orchestrated off-road experiences for the media and filming events.”

The driving force, speculates Pearce, is that privacy is now the most valued commodity among travelers. Quality of experience is more important than cost, although custom trips can offer greater value than packaged tours based on number of participants. If a group size warrants, it will be treated as a private group without paying increased fees for a private tour. The Moab Adventure Center offers group discounts of up to 20 percent off.

“When ultimate flexibility, privacy and overall control matter, a private, custom trip is the growing answer,” adds Pearce.

Moab Adventure Center offers an expanding menu of private tours for exploring this red rock playground situated between two national parks; Arches and Canyonlands. Clients can build a romantic river escape for just two or an active multi-generational family outing with age-appropriate activities and challenges such as national park tours, mountain biking, Hummer safaris and canyoneering. The Moab Adventure Center can design a custom program for just a day or plan a weeklong multi-day itinerary based on specific requests. The benefits of a custom trip may be, among others, to compliment travel schedules, to provide more intimate personal experiences, to bring unusual dining adventures to the tour and to let clients determine how and where they want to spend their time.

Privacy and exclusivity are usually top of mind when groups of any size plan an outing. The center has recently seen an uptick in adventurescreated specifically for bachelor and bachelorette groups as well as groups of women looking for something different. Pearce assures that, “no request is too outrageous for us to consider, as long as it meets our safety guidelines.”

Another benefit of setting up a private trip is that participants can travel with that group and just those individuals involved. It is appealing for those that want to travel with people of similar beliefs such as a recent Christian Cataract Canyon raft trip set up by the Moab Adventure Center for an area church group.

It is always best to start planning months in advance for the best availability and options. Corporate and special-interest groups are advised to plan minimally eight months to a year out in order to secure appropriate accommodations. A popular potpourri for corporate groups combines whitewater rafting with a Hummer Safari excursion and an afternoon in the national park with ample time for bonding and meetings. Some groups may want to go extreme adventure, while others seek an easy experience. Typical group itineraries of two to three nights start with a welcome dinner at a resort, breakfast, corporate meeting, activity, corporate dinner, guest speaker the following day, another activity, possible another meeting, then end with a farewell dinner and high-energy party.

A few of the most popular private tours include the following activities:

  • Private Hummer Tour– For up to 8 guests @ $350 per hour for vehicle and driver/guides. A gourmet dinner or sunrise breakfast is an extra $50 per person.
  • Private Photography / Scenery Tour– A guide/driver takes guests to insider favorites, with pick up at hotel or campground. Rates are available on request.
  • Private Stand Up Paddle Boarding Adventure– For up to 6 guests @$600 per departure for private guide and once-in-a-lifetime experience on the Colorado River. Included are transportation, paddleboard rental, instruction, guide, snacks and beverages.
  • Private Sunset Raft Trip– A two-person minimum at $300 per person for rafting adventure on the Colorado River with private river guide who explains points of interest along the way. The day can end with an optional dinner at a riverside ranch (for an additional fee).
  • Private Tours of Moab and Beyond– Rates are available upon request. This is a four to six-hour outing that can be arranged over several days for an intimate view of the parks and surrounding areas of interest: dinosaur habitats, ancient Puebloan ruins, sites of famous movie locations and more.

To speed things up so people can slow themselves down, the region now has scheduled daily air service from Denver, CO, and Salt Lake City, UT.

For more info visit transrockies.com/moab-rocks/ or call 877-373-3376.

Unlike more blustery parts of the United States, winter temperatures in the Moab region are moderate, with daytime highs averaging 44°F in December, 43°F in January, 52°F in February and 63°F in March. There is little to no precipitation. Scenery changes very little from season to season. Juniper trees stay green year-round. Cottonwood trees grow in the bottom of washes and lose their leaves. The main attractions - the red sandstone formations - take on a richer hue in moist conditions and transform themselves when flocked with snow. Heavy snowfall is uncommon. Snow usually melts quickly in sunny areas but may accumulate in shady spots. Winter hikers need to be prepared to cross snow on some trail sections and to use care on icy trails. Most go through areas where there is plenty of sunshine making it very pleasant to hike during the day. Typically all that’s needed is a jacket.  Spring comes early in the Arches area. By late February, tiny wild flowers are starting to push through the soil and nighttime temperatures are moderating. February is a great month to visit the national parks.

Moab, Utah – Where Fall Colors Light Up Forests, Mountains, Rocks and Canyons

Road Trips, Rafting, Concerts and Events Make Autumn Favorite Time of Year for Locals and Visitors

MOAB, UT, Sept. 19, 2016 – Moab, Utah, is an adventure world that never sleeps. One of the most exciting times of year in this red rock playground is Autumn when the convergence of yellow (think cottonwoods) along the Colorado River, reds (the multi-colored slick rock terrain), brisk days, elbow room in Arches and Canyonlands national parks and festivals create a perfect fall get-away scenario.

When planning a long September or October weekend, travelers are well-advised to first call or drop in and talk to the experts at the Moab Adventure Center (http://www.moabadventurecenter.com/), the region’s one-stop for activities, gear and advice.

“Everyone knows about the spectacular fall colors of aspen, cottonwoods and other deciduous trees in town, on the mountain and inside the canyons. But another fall color change is the deepening hue and richness of the multi-colored sandstone rocks themselves! The special angle of the fall light, the crisp, dry air and shorter days bring out the density of the many colors of rock surrounding Moab. It’s our favorite time to be here,” says Jamie Pearce, Manager of the Moab Adventure Center.

For an immersion in color and texture, Pearce suggests leaf- and rock-peeping tours by jeep, rented for a day starting at $190 through Moab Adventure Center (http://www.moabadventurecenter.com/trips/jeep-rentals/). Her favorite fall color road trips include:

- La Sal Mountain Loop Road Scenic Backway: Just 20 miles south of Moab are the La Sal Mountains, part of Manti-La Sal National Forest.  At nearly 13,000 feet, these pine and aspen covered mountains are the second highest mountain range in Utah. Unique here are expansive views of the red rock landscape below. The loop takes about three hours over 60 miles. Hairpin curves on the Castle Valley side are unsuitable for large RV's. Family cars are welcome. See: http://www.discovermoab.com/la_sal_mountain_loop_road.htm

- Gemini Bridges Trail, exploring a region between Highways 191 and 313, reaches grand vistas and accesses numerous other trails. Here is the spectacular twin arch, called Gemini Bridges, on the rim of an arm of Bull Canyon. A jeep is required on these 48 miles with 14 miles on 4wd road.

- Poison Spider Mesa Trail overlooks the colorful Colorado River and Moab Valley.Expanses of unbroken slick rock and views of the Behind the Rocks area and the La Sal Mountains make it one of the most attractive drives in the area. Jeeps are required on these 36 miles with 16 miles on 4wd road.

- Moab Rim Trail climbs tilted rock strata along the south side of the Colorado River to reach a rim view overlooking Moab, with outstanding views of the river, Spanish Valley and the La Sal Mountains. This 4wd trail is the boundary of the Behind the Rocks Wilderness Study area; the area west of the trail is closed to vehicle travel to protect scenic and primitive recreation values. A jeep is required on these 15 miles with 7 miles on 4wd road.

Please see http://www.discovermoab.com/fourwheel.htm

The beginning of Autumn doesn’t mean that river activities are over. Instead, through October scenic float trips reveal the changing colors along the Colorado River. The Moab Adventure Center arranges both Full Day or Half-Day (AM or PM) trips daily, See: http://www.moabadventurecenter.com/trips/rafting/full.php or http://www.moabadventurecenter.com/trips/rafting/am.php

Favorite fall events include:

- Sept 22-25 - 13th Annual Mother of All Boogies (Skydiving Festival) invites skydivers from all over the world four full days of high altitude skydiving from turbine aircraft.

- Sept 30-Oct 2 - Outerbike - Test ride all of the latest and greatest bikes and gear on the world class trails of Moab. The world’s best bike and gear manufacturers will be set up at the Outerbike Expo site.

- Oct 1-8 - PleinAir Moab - PleinAir Moab celebrates open air painting in breathtaking environments.

- Oct 27-30 - 11th Annual Moab Ho Down Mountain Bike Festival and Film Fest is a fundraiser for local trails and the Moab Bike Park.

- Nov 4-6 - Moab Folk Festival is a 3-day music event with 12 performers, workshops, local educational outreach and art vendors.

- Nov 4-6 - Moab Celtic Festival "Scots on the Rocks" brings to life the rich heritage and colorful history of Scottish and Celtic cultures.

Banner Year for Moab and National Park Visitation - Moab Adventure Center Enjoys Significant Uptick in Business With 2016 Year-to-Date Visits to Region Up 11 Percent

MOAB, UT, Aug. 8, 2016 – Moab, Utah, flanked by two national parks, is one of the world’s great playgrounds, equal to any popular tourism destination when it comes to healthy, immersive, year-round outdoor recreation and scenery.

And it comes as no surprise that midway into 2016, visits are on the rise to Arches and Canyonlands National Parks and to Moab, the recreation-centered town that serves park travelers. This year, after all, is the “it” year for visiting national parks, thanks to the celebrations and promotions centered around the 100th anniversary of the United States National Park Service.

The go-to hub here is Moab Adventure Center (www.moabadventurecenter.com/) just 4.5 miles from Arches National Park and 30 miles from Canyonlands National Park. While visits to the region show a healthy 11 percent increase over last year, the Center reports that through end July it has seen a strong 8 percent increase in half- and day-long Arches National Park tours. Rafting is up an unprecedented 50 percent, and there’s increased interest in mountain biking and rock climbing.

“But the biggest trend I see is the effort and dedication people make to get here to do our parks,” said Jaime Pearce, manager of Moab Adventure Center.

Last calendar year Arches drew nearly 1.5 million recreation visitors. By June 2016 visitations were up nearly 11 percent over last year. There were close to 10,000 more vehicles entering the park this June compared to June 2016.

“And they’re coming from all over the world,” observes Pearce.

One visitor to Moab in early July said there seemed to be twice as many foreign-speaking travelers as Americans enjoying the region’s offerings. That’s not by accident, however, as information about the area is available via brochures online that can be downloaded in Chinese, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Japanese and Spanish, according to the Moab Travel Council.

“We see a lot of foreign travelers in July and August, but most of the time they’re on their own group or self-contained tours,” said Pearce.

She said that Moab Adventure Center assists foreign visitors by hiring guides who speak multiple foreign languages and matching them up with guests purchasing tours that may range from river rafting to hiking.

“We have an incredible mix of guides. This is one of the things that sets us apart. On TripAdvisor and internal customer satisfaction surveys our guides are also singled out for their professionalism and friendliness,” she said. “They are very knowledgeable, clean cut and cream of the crop.”

As the largest employer in the recreation arena in this region, Moab Adventure Center often retains local guides who have grown up in the area and who know the landscape. Approximately 25 guides are assigned to land tours, another 40 to river programs in the area, and up to 50 escort rafting trips into the Grand Canyon.

Visitors to this region can enter the park 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and therefore plan their arrival and departure to avoid the popular 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. window. An astronomical chart for the region informs visitors when the sun rises and when it sets each month. And it gives a peek at the best dates to plan night hikes to witness the full moon working its magic over the park. Star-gazing nights that celebrate the heavens may also be planned. See:  http://discovermoab.com/sunshine.htm.

“I think the park service is doing a great job offering night tours and sky tours,” commented Pearce. “The parks have got it covered.”

Creating a vacation in Moab is easy enough once the visitors know how long they will be in the region. Then it’s a matter of getting everyone up and out early so that at least two activities can be scheduled each day.

Moab Adventure Center is at the epicenter of nature-themed rather than Disney-themed adventure, promising activities that include rafting, jet boating, stand up paddle boarding, hiking, mountain biking and hot air ballooning. Moab Hummer safaris, rock climbing, canyoneering and horseback riding are also popular. Many of these activities are conducted with guides, an arrangement that helps preclude the kind of damage to the land that can happen when uneducated visitors venture into areas where they shouldn’t be. Guides help people understand where they can move through back country with the least impact possible.

To make it easier to get to Moab there’s a new air service from Salt Lake City and Denver into the region. San Francisco-based Boutique Air provides passenger airline service to Canyonlands Field Airport.

Scenic outings are for two or four hours and at sunset. Rates are from $83 for adults and $51 for youth ages 3-15. http://www.moabadventurecenter.com/trips/hummer/

Families can extend their budget by purchasing a pre-set activities and lodging package such as the Rock & River Package that includes a two-hour Hummer Safari in the morning and a five-hour river rafting trip in the afternoon. The rate is $149 per adult and $107 per youth for this guide-enhanced immersion in Nature. http://www.moabadventurecenter.com/trips/packages/

Older youth may want to do some slick-rock mountain biking and zip lining; everyone can partake of hiking, guided or not; and just possibly Mom and Dad can get away for a romantic hot air balloon ride over the mysteries this landscape holds.

Families may also opt to hire a private tour guide for a day or longer. The guide can also take over much of the decision-making and provide that other-person-buffer families sometimes appreciate to keep things running smoothly. The best hiking trails, views, discoveries of petroglyphs and Indian lore, and hidden places for stand up paddle boarding all play into the many activities and experiences that a guide can arrange. http://www.moabadventurecenter.com/trips/private-tours/

To make it easier to get to Moab there’s a new air service from Salt Lake City and Denver into the region. San Francisco-based Boutique Air provides passenger airline service to Canyonlands Field Airport. It provides two flights daily to Salt Lake City at $59 per flight and one flight daily to Denver at $79. The airline will provide five flights per day during Moab’s busy tourist season.

Moab Adventure Center is at the epicenter of nature-themed rather than theme park-style adventure, promising activities that include rafting, jet boating, stand up paddle boarding, hiking, mountain biking and hot air ballooning. Hummer safaris, rock climbing, canyoneering and horseback riding are also popular. Many of these activities are conducted with guides, an arrangement that helps preclude the kind of impact to the land that can happen when uneducated visitors venture into areas where they perhaps shouldn’t be. Guides help people understand how and where they can move through back country areas with the least trace possible.

Year-round occupancy for the area’s 3,500 beds runs between 74 and 80 percent, primarily from March through November. While availability on Moab Adventure Center’s rafting, hot air balloon and other activities can usually be accommodated, lodging may be an issue and people should book accommodations well in advance.
