TAHOE CITY, CA, June 26, 2012 – The active travel company that secures matches between adventure-seeking clients and a treasure trove of small, expedition ships, AdventureSmith Explorations (http://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com/), earmarks some of the best places in the world to watch the antics of penguins.
Todd Smith, company founder and director, reminds that there are 17 species of penguin, all of which, except for the Galapagos Penguin, live in the Southern Hemisphere. For example, there are six common penguin species in Antarctic regions alone: Adelie, Chinstrap, Emperor, Gentoo, King and Macaroni.
“Penguins are marvelous creatures that capture the imagination of travelers young and old. The dream of encountering penguins in the wild, in their natural habitat, for some, like me, is the holy grail of wildlife adventures,” Smith said.
Small ship cruises make viewing penguins in the wild easy, comfortable and low impact. Ice-strengthened hulls allow small expedition vessels carrying between 49 and 149 guests to navigate around the ice and into protected coves and bays. Once in the region, expedition leaders take over, presenting the life and lore of penguins during shore excursions and through on-ship education programs. Depending on the cruise guests can often ski, camp, snowshoe and kayak among the friendly creatures.
Following are Smith’s top-five locations for viewing penguins from the comfort and vantage of small ships. Participation can be arranged by AdventureSmith Explorations.
Patagonia: Megallanic Penguins live along the coasts of South America and are easily observed in Chile’s Tierra del Fuego region of Patagonia. Patagonia Expedition Cruises aboard the 128 guest Via Australis operates September through April; penguins can be seen throughout this time. Cruises begin in Ushuaia, Argentina, and end in Punta Arenas, Chile, or reverse. These cruises are commonly combined with overland explorations of Patagonia’s Torres del Paine, the Atacama Desert or Santiago, Chile.
Antarctica - Ross Sea, Commonwealth Bay and Macquarie Islands and Antipodes: Explorations to Antarctica from Australia and New Zealand are adventures to the most remote regions on the planet. Midway between Oceana and Antarctica are the New Zealand’s Sub Antarctic Islands, home to a huge variety of penguin species congregating in vast colonies and are visited on Macquarie, Snares and Stewart islands on a New Zealand and Sub Antarctic Islands Cruise or on Antipodes, Campbell and Macquarie islands on Exploration of the Antipodes aboard the 5-star, 106 passenger MV Orion.
Cruises (also aboard the MV Orion) from Australia and New Zealand to the Antarctic continent visit the Ross Sea region or Commonwealth Bay and include historical sites related to early Antarctic explorers Scott, Mawson and Shackleton. These cruises depart from various ports in Southern Australia and New Zealand, making them popular with travelers in this region. Travelers from North America often combine their cruise with an overland exploration of New Zealand or Australia.
The Antarctic Peninsula and Weddell Sea: Expedition cruises visiting the Antarctic Peninsula and Weddell Sea are the most popular and most affordable way to view a penguin in Antarctica. A wide variety of small ships carrying 49-149 guests offer a choice of programs from easy cruising to extremely active expeditions with hiking, kayaking, skiing or even camping. These cruises usually depart from Ushuaia, Argentina. Among the most popular is National Geographic White Content aboard the Explorer (Smith said, “Quite simply this is the finest Antarctica Cruise available.”)
Quark Expeditions Antarctic Explorer operates aboard an updated fleet of upscale expedition ships. (There’s a 20 percent off offer on 11-12 day programs.) Weddell Sea Emperor Penguin Voyage is a specialty cruise for penguin purists who specifically want to see Emperor Penguins. Helicopters fly guests from the ship (the The 100 passenger M/V Ortelius) to the island where the colonies are located. A guide then leads the group overland to view the Emperor Penguin colonies.
Galapagos Islands: The Galapagos Penguin is endemic to the Galapagos Islands and is the only penguin to live north of the Equator in the wild. They have the smallest range and population of any penguin with less than 1,000 pairs mostly found on the Islands of Fernandina and Isabela. These penguins don’t migrate, breed year round and are most active in late August through early October when the water temperature is coolest (about 64F). For the many options available view Galapagos Cruises or Galapagos Yachts and Small Ships.
South Georgia and Falkland Islands: The remote archipelagos on South Georgia and the Falkland islands are home to a variety of species in vast colonies numbering in the millions. Entire hillsides and beaches may be covered with nesting penguins rearing their young. Suggested itineraries include the 24-day National Geographic Antarctic Peninsula, South Georgia and Falkland Islands aboard the spectacular expedition ship National Geographic Explorer. Explorers & Kings is an affordable 20-day expedition with an experienced Antarctic team.

“The small ships focus on experiences away from the vessel, as in observing glaciers, whales, birds and land mammals; while the large ships tend to focus on dining venues, port of call shopping and ship-board entertainment,” Smith said.

TAHOE CITY, CA, Mar. 8, 2012 – The active travel company securing matches between adventure-seeking clients and a treasure trove of small, expedition ships, AdventureSmith Explorations (http://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com/), also specializes in small ship and private yacht charters to such destinations as Alaska, Baja, Costa Rica, Panama, Galapagos, Mediterranean and Antarctica.
Todd Smith, founder, explained that on a private cruise charter groups select their own travel dates, traveling companions and itineraries, plus a full yacht charter (for 12 to 20 or 20 to 48 guests) can mean savings of up to 50 percent off of regular per person cruise rates. Larger small ships accommodate groups of between 48 and 148 passengers making them ideal for big family reunions and special celebrations.
Helpful information on chartering a small ship or yacht can be found online at: http://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com/chartercruises.php
Typically charters are planned and contracted at least one year in advance of the cruise departure date, but as long as space is available a small ship can still be chartered most anytime. Off season charters garner the greatest savings while high season dates should be secured a year or more in advance.
Charters can be adapted to, among others, affinity groups, clients with special needs and secured as company incentives. Alumni groups, zoos and museums hire charters for their travel programs. Travel agents or group leaders can earn free berths by organizing charter cruises for clients and friends.
Cruise itineraries, on board programs, activity levels and even food service can be customized to a group’s interests, ability and budget.
Smith explained that AdventureSmith Explorations charter cruises are crewed charters, outfitted with an experienced and professional crew including naturalist guides for shore excursions.
“We do not offer bareboat charters. We believe that the captain, guides, chef and crew are an integral part of expedition cruising and that their experience and expertise are essential to a safe and successful voyage,” said Smith.
Alaska charter cruises are best from May through September. Costa Rica and Panama charter cruises operate year round with the high season running from December to March. Galapagos charters are available year round with access to a vast selection of motor yachts, sailing vessels and small ships. Mediterranean charter cruises are best booked between April and October. Antarctica explorations, Australia and South Pacific charters are also possible however these destinations favor larger expedition ships and therefore require larger groups.

TAHOE CITY, CA, Feb. 21, 2012 – The active travel company that secures matches between adventure-seeking clients and a treasure trove of small, expedition ships, AdventureSmith Explorations, shares five ideas on where best to cruise for whale spotting. http://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com/
“These are my personal favorites where you can get up close and friendly with earth’s largest mammals,” explains Todd Smith, company founder and director. “But we wouldn’t be responsible travelers if we didn’t recognize that the goal of all whale watching should be to observe the animals without changing their behavior. If outside presence in any way influences a whale’s activity, you are too close.”
Smith called an up close encounter with whales aboard a small ship, zodiac or kayak “one of the most incredible wildlife experiences of a lifetime.” His top five picks for whale watching are
Summertime (mid June to late August) southeast Alaska’s Inside Passage: Migratory Humpback whales from Hawaii and Baja return to the nutrient rich waters of Coastal Alaska to spend the summer feeding. The combination of long days of sunlight, cold oxygen and nutrient rich water creates a bloom of plankton that is the foundation of a rich food chain whales rely on to exist. Whales gather in feeding pods of 6 or more animals and their behavior and location becomes more predictable around food sources. One of the most amazing whale behaviors is bubble net feeding where whales work cooperatively to corral small fish in a net of bubbles. The whales then swim through the net with their mouths wide open, crashing to the surface in a cacophony of fish, whales and water. Sometimes Orca or killer whales are spotted along with Minke whales. http://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com/itinerarydetails.php/advid/60
Summer (June to August) Arctic: Back from migration come Gray, Blue, Fin, and Minke whales. But some of the most unusual whales in the world, the Bowhead, Beluga and Narwhal, make their home in the Arctic and subarctic year-round. Because of the Arctic’s extremely wild nature, it is not uncommon to find whale bones washed ashore or even polar bears feeding on a whale carcass. http://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com/itinerarydetails.php/advid/322
Winter (December to February) Antarctica: Rich waters here attract whales from throughout the southern hemisphere. The most commonly seen species are Right, Blue, Sei, Humpback, Minke, Fin, Sperm and Killer whales. In Antarctica plentiful krill (a small shrimp-like creature) provide a food source for migratory whales. http://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com/itinerarydetails.php/advid/315
Winter (December to April) Hawaii: Many onboard naturalists migrate with whales from Alaska to Hawaii, working aboard small ships in each region. Humpback whales visit Alaska to feed; the remainder of the year they don’t feed at all, or very little. Humpbacks visit the warm waters of Hawaii to mate and give birth to their calves. One of the most exciting scenes in Hawaii whale watching is a pod of males swimming, fin slapping, spy hopping and breaching in competition for a female. It is also in Hawaii when these whales sing and their songs can be heard under the water for miles. Listen carefully for whale songs while snorkeling. http://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com/itinerarydetails.php/advid/200
Winter (January to April) San Ignacio Lagoon and Magdalena Bay on the Pacific side of California’s Baja Peninsula: Here are winter calving grounds of the California Gray Whale. Close encounters are expected as these 40-ton whales (friendlies) seem to have affection for people. It is not uncommon for proud mothers and curious calves to approach zodiacs full of travelers. Also, across the peninsula, the rich waters of the Sea of Cortez are home to Blue, Fin, Pilot, Humpback and Sperm whales. http://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com/itinerarydetails.php/advid/94

Tahoe City, CA, Dec. 14, 2011 – Here are some bear facts about bear sightings with AdventureSmith Explorations, http://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com/, the travel company that secures matches between adventure-seeking clients and a treasure trove of small expedition ships and wilderness lodges.
“Bears are cute but those spotted during a small ship expedition cruise are in the backcountry where it’s as wild as it gets,” said Todd Smith, founder and director. “Our method of accessing remote islands and coastlines where larger ships can’t sail plus the guidance of trained naturalists offer opportunities for bear-centric guests to encounter wildlife at a close but secure distance, without impacting the animals’ natural habitat.”
Following are opportunities in Alaska and elsewhere to see bears in uncompromised wilderness through small ship and float plane access to the landscape. The ships and lodges referenced are represented by AdventureSmith Explorations
The expedition ship Pacific Catalyst II has been awarded permits to guide travelers to the Pack Creek Zoological Area on Admiralty Island to view the highest concentration of Brown Bears in the world (about one per square mile). For 60 years Brown Bears and humans have lived in close proximity, and the bears have had generations to become accustomed to the presence of people. Considered the “best Brown Bear viewing opportunity in SE Alaska” this activity is now included in the seven night cruise itinerary. For details see: http://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com/itinerarydetails.php/advid/128
Another highly popular trip and Alaska cruise extension is viewing the Brown Bears of Katmai based from the Brooks Lodge. Here they gather upstream from a series of lakes in Katmai National Park and where Brooks Falls impedes the progress of spawning salmon, making an easy meal and thus a high concentration of bears. A land-based lodge program operates in this region from May through September, but the best month is July when the Sockeye Salmon run is at its peak. Smith advised that bookings should be made earlier as it can be hard to obtain dates. See: http://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com/itinerarydetails.php/advid/76.
A trip called Within the Wild is float-plane-accessed tour based from Winterlake Lodge with a day of Brown Bear viewing in Redoubt Bay, a unique setting where bears are viewed from small boats that navigate river mouths were salmon congregate and acclimatize to fresh water before swimming upstream to spawn. See: http://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com/itinerarydetails.php/advid/20
Annan Creek is the Black Bear viewing spot in Southeast Alaska. Located 30 miles outside of Wrangell, it is within reach of some small ships and yachts; however because special permits are required and group sizes are small, this option is best for charter yachts only. For travelers beginning a cruise in Juneau or Ketchikan it is possible to have AdventureSmith Explorations arrange an overnight in Wrangell with a bear viewing trip to Annan Creek.
There are ample bear viewing opportunities outside of Alaska as well. Popular small ship cruises to see Polar Bears include: Realm of the Polar Bear visiting the remote island of Spitsbergen: http://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com/itinerarydetails.php/advid/322 and Land of the Ice Bear visiting Arctic Svalbard, a remote archipelago situated just over 350 miles north of Norway's North Cape. See: http://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com/itinerarydetails.php/advid/69.
Russian Brown Bears can be viewed on Natural Treasures of the Russian Far East. See: http://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com/itinerarydetails.php/advid/297
Possible but “very, very rarely” a Spectacled Bear may be viewed on the Peru Mountain Lodge Trek according to Smith. See: http://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com/itinerarydetails.php/advid/181

TAHOE CITY, CA, Nov. 29, 2011 – The active travel company best known for matching up adventure-seeking clients with a treasure trove of small, expedition ships, AdventureSmith Explorations (http://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com/), also has land tours up its sleeve, including a 2012, 11-day Maya Heritage & Calendar Tour priced from $2,400 per person double (single supplement $525).
This trip combines an exploration of Guatemala’s ancient Maya sites with travel to Honduras and Mexico. Indigenous guides who themselves are descendants of the Maya, use the ancient calendar of the Maya to create connections between worlds past and present, revealing the mysteries and meanings of the Maya calendar and Maya culture and how it can be viewed in modern times.
Departures can be scheduled anytime with just a minimum of two participants. For complete details see: http://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com/itinerarydetails.php/advid/85
When not reveling in archeology, bird watching, hiking, photography and wildlife viewing, guests lodge and dine at comfortable hotels including in Guatemala City, the arrival / departure point.
“The Maya Heritage and Calendar 2012 tour is the antidote to 2012 apocalyptic sensationalism. There are no ancient Maya writings containing prophecies of any kind. They were, however, extraordinary time keepers and their 5125 year calendar is coming to an end on Dec. 21, 2012,” said Todd Smith, AdventureSmith Explorations founder and owner.
The tour includes a handful of UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Copan, in Honduras, the southernmost center of lowland Maya civilization and famed for artistic sculpture; Quirigua, a strategically located river city linking the Caribbean coast with interior settlements along Guatemala’s coastal plain; Tikal, a one-time major city covering some 46 square miles with a population estimated at 55,000; Mexico’s Palenque Archaeological Site where a ruler’s tomb stands as one of the greatest discoveries of Mayan archeology; and Antigua, an incredibly preserved Spanish Colonial site.
Among other highlights are visits to the ruins of Yaxchilan and Bonampak, Mexico. Guests can view Rio Usumacinta and the surrounding jungle after climbing Yaxchilan’s highest temple. In Chichicastenango, Guatemala, guests can shop in the largest and most colorful handicrafts market in The Americas.
