AdventureSmith Explorations

ASE_logo_blk_ver.gifBased in Lake Tahoe, California, AdventureSmith Explorations is the global leader in small ship, expeditionary cruise vacations. Founded in 2003, AdventureSmith Explorations carefully matches its guests with the top names in expedition cruising as well as smaller, boutique ships that don't make the radar of most travelers.

Dedicated to small footprint, sustainable travel AdventureSmith Explorations orchestrates connections with the world's most exotic natural environments and vibrant native cultures through small ship cruising. Voyages combine intimate cruising with rewarding and exciting activities such as sea kayaking, hiking, and rafting in places usually not found on more mainstream itineraries. Commitment to Sustainable Travel
The nature of modern travel inherently emits harmful carbon emissions through the burning of fossil fuels. Planes, ships, cars and lodges are all sources of additional carbon in our atmosphere and contribute to global warming. AdventureSmith Explorations has calculated the amount of carbon emitted by their small ship cruise passengers each year. Through the company’s Carbon Free Cruising campaign they have completely neutralized those emissions and hope to educate travelers about how to fight global warming by reducing their own carbon footprint. See https://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com/carbon-free-cruising for more information.

In addition to its ground breaking Carbon Free Cruising initiative, the company's mission is to give back to the individuals, communities and environments touched by AdventureSmith Explorations trips by connecting travelers with a network of grassroots and global nonprofit partners worldwide including the Alaska Natural History Association, Neotropica Foundation, and Galapagos Conservancy. See: https://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com/conservation for more information.

Small Ship Cruises and Land Excursions Reveal Opportunities For Sightings of Bear in the Wild

Tahoe City, CA, Dec. 14, 2011 – Here are some bear facts about bear sightings with AdventureSmith Explorations, http://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com/, the travel company that secures matches between adventure-seeking clients and a treasure trove of small expedition ships and wilderness lodges.

“Bears are cute but those spotted during a small ship expedition cruise are in the backcountry where it’s as wild as it gets,” said Todd Smith, founder and director. “Our method of accessing remote islands and coastlines where larger ships can’t sail plus the guidance of trained naturalists offer opportunities for bear-centric guests to encounter wildlife at a close but secure distance, without impacting the animals’ natural habitat.”

Following are opportunities in Alaska and elsewhere to see bears in uncompromised wilderness through small ship and float plane access to the landscape. The ships and lodges referenced are represented by AdventureSmith Explorations

The expedition ship Pacific Catalyst II has been awarded permits to guide travelers to the Pack Creek Zoological Area on Admiralty Island to view the highest concentration of Brown Bears in the world (about one per square mile). For 60 years Brown Bears and humans have lived in close proximity, and the bears have had generations to become accustomed to the presence of people. Considered the “best Brown Bear viewing opportunity in SE Alaska” this activity is now included in the seven night cruise itinerary. For details see: http://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com/itinerarydetails.php/advid/128

Another highly popular trip and Alaska cruise extension is viewing the Brown Bears of Katmai based from the Brooks Lodge. Here they gather upstream from a series of lakes in Katmai National Park and where Brooks Falls impedes the progress of spawning salmon, making an easy meal and thus a high concentration of bears. A land-based lodge program operates in this region from May through September, but the best month is July when the Sockeye Salmon run is at its peak. Smith advised that bookings should be made earlier as it can be hard to obtain dates. See: http://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com/itinerarydetails.php/advid/76.

A trip called Within the Wild is float-plane-accessed tour based from Winterlake Lodge with a day of Brown Bear viewing in Redoubt Bay, a unique setting where bears are viewed from small boats that navigate river mouths were salmon congregate and acclimatize to fresh water before swimming upstream to spawn. See: http://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com/itinerarydetails.php/advid/20

Annan Creek is the Black Bear viewing spot in Southeast Alaska. Located 30 miles outside of Wrangell, it is within reach of some small ships and yachts; however because special permits are required and group sizes are small, this option is best for charter yachts only.  For travelers beginning a cruise in Juneau or Ketchikan it is possible to have AdventureSmith Explorations arrange an overnight in Wrangell with a bear viewing trip to Annan Creek.

There are ample bear viewing opportunities outside of Alaska as well. Popular small ship cruises to see Polar Bears include: Realm of the Polar Bear visiting the remote island of Spitsbergen: http://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com/itinerarydetails.php/advid/322 and Land of the Ice Bear visiting Arctic Svalbard, a remote archipelago situated just over 350 miles north of Norway's North Cape. See: http://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com/itinerarydetails.php/advid/69.

Russian Brown Bears can be viewed on Natural Treasures of the Russian Far East.  See: http://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com/itinerarydetails.php/advid/297

Possible but “very, very rarely” a Spectacled Bear may be viewed on the Peru Mountain Lodge Trek according to Smith. See: http://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com/itinerarydetails.php/advid/181

AdventureSmith Explorations Announces 11-Day Maya Heritage & Calendar Tour 2012

TAHOE CITY, CA, Nov. 29, 2011 – The active travel company best known for matching up adventure-seeking clients with a treasure trove of small, expedition ships, AdventureSmith Explorations (http://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com/), also has land tours up its sleeve, including a 2012, 11-day Maya Heritage & Calendar Tour priced from $2,400 per person double (single supplement $525).

This trip combines an exploration of Guatemala’s ancient Maya sites with travel to Honduras and Mexico. Indigenous guides who themselves are descendants of the Maya, use the ancient calendar of the Maya to create connections between worlds past and present, revealing the mysteries and meanings of the Maya calendar and Maya culture and how it can be viewed in modern times.

Departures can be scheduled anytime with just a minimum of two participants. For complete details see: http://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com/itinerarydetails.php/advid/85

When not reveling in archeology, bird watching, hiking, photography and wildlife viewing, guests lodge and dine at comfortable hotels including in Guatemala City, the arrival / departure point.

“The Maya Heritage and Calendar 2012 tour is the antidote to 2012 apocalyptic sensationalism. There are no ancient Maya writings containing prophecies of any kind. They were, however, extraordinary time keepers and their 5125 year calendar is coming to an end on Dec. 21, 2012,” said Todd Smith, AdventureSmith Explorations founder and owner.

The tour includes a handful of UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Copan, in Honduras, the southernmost center of lowland Maya civilization and famed for artistic sculpture; Quirigua, a strategically located river city linking the Caribbean coast with interior settlements along Guatemala’s coastal plain; Tikal, a one-time major city covering some 46 square miles with a population estimated at 55,000; Mexico’s Palenque Archaeological Site where a ruler’s tomb stands as one of the greatest discoveries of Mayan archeology; and Antigua, an incredibly preserved Spanish Colonial site.

Among other highlights are visits to the ruins of Yaxchilan and Bonampak, Mexico. Guests can view Rio Usumacinta and the surrounding jungle after climbing Yaxchilan’s highest temple. In Chichicastenango, Guatemala, guests can shop in the largest and most colorful handicrafts market in The Americas.

Tahoe City, CA, Oct. 26, 2011– In Alaska, over 25 itineraries, many new for 2012, and 19 ships are at the beck and call of AdventureSmith Explorations, www.adventuresmithexplorations.com/, the travel company that secures matches between adventure-seeking clients and a treasure trove of small expedition ships.

“We are the recognized leader in Alaska small ship cruising,” says Todd Smith, founder and director. “We offer more selection and more first-hand knowledge than anyone, including most of the reservation staffs of the cruise companies themselves.”  The sheer volume of Alaska product requires objective analysis and being a leader in sales means that AdventureSmith Explorations can offer the most competitive prices.

“We help clients compare itineraries and small ships that carry from 12 to 86 guests; then we handle such details as traveling to the embarkation city, recommendations for packing, hotels, transfers, flights and tours, all at no extra cost to the client,” Smith says. He recommends that people book Alaska 10 or more months out to get the best price and selection of small ship cruising that ranges from luxury to floating base camps.

His partners in Alaska include Lindblad Expeditions, InnerSea Discoveries and American Safari, Alaskan Dream Cruises, Alaska Wildland Adventures and a host of smaller companies off the radar of most travelers and travel agents.

The following AdventureSmith Explorations’ Alaska experiences are new for 2012.

Glacier Country Cruise on Safari Endeavour offers an upscale, 86-passenger yacht experience with the highest crew to passenger ratio, 1:2.5, of any small ship. On board are two hot tubs and a sauna, exercise equipment, an extensive wine menu, massage/yoga and spa services plus a full compliment of expedition gear including kayaks, paddle boards and nimble shore craft for daily hiking and kayaking excursions. See: http://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com/itinerarydetails.php/advid/19

Alaska Wilderness Explorer Cruises through Northern Passages and Glacier Bay aboard the 78-passenger Wilderness Explorer is a reincarnation of a Sitka-Juneau itinerary pioneered by Smith featuring three full days in Glacier Bay National Park (more time than any other small ship), daily hiking, kayaking and paddle boarding.  This itinerary can be combined with Eastern or Western Coves cruises for 21 days with no repeated sites. See: http://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com/itinerarydetails.php/advid/429

Glacier Bay and Islands aboard the 78-passenger Admiralty Dream  http://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com/itinerarydetails.php/advid/97 and Inside Passage Soujourn aboard the 46-passenger Alaskan Dream http://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com/itinerarydetails.php/advid/71 are operated by members of the Tlingit Kaagwaantaan Clan. These cruises focus on Alaska's nature, history and First Nations culture.

Smith noted that one long-time partner, Lindblad Expeditions, offers guests exclusive knowledge through the Alaska Whale Foundation. Their researchers and captains often have the inside track on where whales are most active, where to find bears fishing for salmon or whales cooperatively feeding. A team of 10 on-board naturalists from National Geographic offer live natural history lessons. All departures have an on-board photography expert as well. See: http://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com/itinerarydetails.php/advid/60

Smith’s company also partners with Within the Wild exclusive fly-in wilderness lodges, including Winterlake Lodge at the base of the spectacular Alaska Range, where upscale travelers can enjoy a four-day wilderness retreat. See: http://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com/itinerarydetails.php/advid/20.

His company can also arrange small group, fully guided, soft adventures to exclusive wilderness lodges in the Kenai Peninsula and Denali.  Most popular tours are Alaska Grand Journeys http://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com/itinerarydetails.php/advid/21, Kenai Fjords Explorer http://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com/itinerarydetails.php/advid/321  and the Denali Backcountry Explorer.
